from brussels where they are gathering to pay tribute to the victims of the terror attack. good night from new york city. welcome to "red eye." hello, everyone. i'm tom shillue. let's check in with andy levy to see what exciting stories we will be discussing this evening. andy? >> thanks, tom. coming up on the big show donald trump defends his wife's honor. stay tuned to find out which one. and a new new york city law means the mets will have to stop using chewing tobacco during the home games. i guess as a decent human being i don't care about that. and finally the reviews for "batman v superman" are in and it is great that this batman doesn't have nipples. they do think it is great that bruce wayne doesn't either. back to you. >> thank you, andy.

let's welcome our best. she is is an optimist who sees the glass as half full of booze. joanne nosuchunsky. he has been the spokesman for four ambassadors. we get. it you can speak. she has trampled over more stars than a tourist on the hollywood walk of fame. senior editor and rotten tomatoes gray drake. and he likes to go where nobody knows the historic show he wrote for. sitting next to me is the tv, writer and producer rob long. let's start the show. donald trump is laying out his national security strategy. trump wants to continue the successful policies of president obama and hillary clinton, but with less bluster. just kidding. trump said in an interview the muslim world needs to respect us. >> the first thing you have to get them to do is respect the west and respect us. if they
12:02 am
respect us it will never work. they have no respect for us or for our country. >> he was asked if he will use a nuclear weapon against isis and here's what he said. >> i will never rule anything out. and i wouldn't want to say it. i wouldn't want to tell you that because at a minimum i want them to think maybe we would use it. >> trump then scolded the interviewers for asking him whether he woulds consider nukes. >> the fact is we need unpredict built. and when you ask a question like that, it is a very sad thing to have to answer. the enemy is watching and i have a very good chance of winning and i frankly don't want the enemy to know how i'm thinking. >> it is funny. you chuckled and in this interview -- >> that's the biggest thing he has to worry about is wondering what he is thinking. >> he says we need unpredict built. i think that makes sense. >> nixon tried that.
12:03 am
they see right through it. you want to be unpredictable or get respect, electing an orange guy with a weird hair do who changes his mind every five minutes is not the way to do it. >> the idea that they think he is a little more dangerous and that he is going to be -- >> no, they think he is a clown. they are laughing at us. the whole world is laughing at us and they are laughing at him. that's not the same thing as respect. >> you have an idea. >> what if the muslims were terrified of clowns. >> that's a genuine fear. >> do they really think -- >> let's go to rick. rick, you know world politics. this is is a more serious trump interview. they covered a lot of subjects. i thought it was one of the more impressive interviews. did you see the whole thing? >> i did. i agree with you. look, i am not a trump fan and i haven't endorsed anyone, but
12:04 am
this is one of his better ones. it could be a low bar. it does make sense when you are a foreign policy expert. you don't want to lay your plans on the table. you don't want the enemy to know what is going on. you want to be -- you want the enemy to assume that you're willing to do anything. so he has a very good point that he needs to be unpredictable. however he is struggling with the american public to be coherent. i think the excuse of -- i want the enemy to not know the plan. we still need to know the plan for social security. we still need to know the plan for how you are going to get rid of obamacare. there is a bunch that we need to know the plan for. he is lucky with national security being secretive and unpredictable. there is nobody that will use tactile weapons. so to say there is won't make
12:05 am
people wonder. >> we haven't had an unpredictable president. we have had a president who has been predictably soft on terror. so i think that voters would rather the unpredict built which is what we are seeing. >> it was ronald reagan and he was tough and knew what he was doing and he had a policy. >> one of the keys of reagan is that a lot of people thought he is just crazy enough that he could do it. and so there is a benefit to -- and i would -- i know the middle east really well and i know that a lot of people look at trump. they say, gosh, he may throw the whole thing away and start over. he is already saying when it comes to palestine and israel he will not take sides. he is throwing the apple card and overturning it completely. >> do you think he knows how respect actually works? you don't demand respect of people. respect is rned. respect is earned.
12:06 am
this clues me in to what kind of babysitter he has been. >> makes the kids sit down in their chair and skin a deer while not breaking eye contact. >> that would be cool. i would sign up for that. >> it would help. >> i definitely would respect him if that was the case. >> i think it is better to be feared. >> sbt that the truth -- isn't that the truth? >> he doesn't strike me as terrifying or strikes fear in anybody. if you are the king in saudi arabia, you are the king of egypt and you are the king of jordan. this guy doesn't intimidate you. >> then who does? hillary clinton? bernie sanders? >> the question is -- okay. i want to talk about brussels. after the brussels terror attack ted cruz called for law enforcement to patrol and secure muslim neighborhood. in new york city on tuesday crews reiterated his stance
12:07 am
slamming bill de blasio for the muslim surveillance program of the. >> mayor bill de blasio when he came in in a peak of political correctness canceled the program. that is refusing to acknowledge the threat we have and the world is too dangerous. >> the new york police commissioner couldn't agree more. >> the statements he made today is why he would not become president of the country. we don't need a president that doesn't respect the values that form the foundation of this country. >> maybe he could agree like that much more, maybe. >> i think there was some daylight there. >> look, can someone say amen? someone said amen. >> that's bill bratten. >> the nypd defended this muslim surveillance program while it was happening under ray kelly.
12:08 am
bloomburg no right wing nut defended this program. why is ted cruz president because he stood for something bloomburg created? >> wasn't it a mosque surveillance program and not muslim? the mosques that are teaching hate and that are on a list, i think we should listen to them. but to jump in and to say we are going to listen in and sur veil veil -- survey all muslims? >> this is a slippery slope. >> where does it go? >> god help us all. you wouldn't want anybody sur veiling your home and phone calls when you were a good american citizen. >> i don't want anybody looking at my browser history. i am an open book. >> if i had terrorists who were plotting against the government in my church i would say yeah invite a couple spies into my church. we will have coffee together. >> rick's right. there is a difference between looking at mosques and mosques that are under surveillance.
12:09 am
but the nypd is doing that too. this is a law enforcement issue now. all of these distributed kind of sleeper cells all over the placeful it is the cop on the beat who will figure this out. it is more likely than the fbi in terms of pure statistics. i don't know why there is a problem. >> this is the thing. they said there is 9,000 cops who are muslim. stop offending us. those were the cops that were in the mosques. we had our muslim mosques going under cover and this program had respect when it was happening and bill de blasio discontinued it. why are they acting like it is a crazy idea that ted cruz has? >> it is a different time. with the whole pc culture that people are trying to separate themselves from they -- people are upset which is why ted cruz is bringing this up. an important thing to note, but british muslims, 18% of
12:10 am
british muslims said they would not say anything if someone was planning a terrorist attack. and that is should being. and that is shocking. there is a greater population, sure, but if we are taking in refugees that is is something to consider. >> one in four. i would say get in there and do some spying. >> look at san bernadino. the neighbors of the san bernadino attacker said i felt a little suspicious about what was going on, and i didn't say anything because i didn't want to be called a racist. we have to change the see something, say something. now if you see something and say something you are called a racist. i think new york city has gone completely that way. de blasio is messaging to people , you can't say anything unless you see the guy making a bomb and boarding a plane. now if you are suspicious in anyway, you're called anti-immigrant and i think that is really dangerous. >> they keep saying we have muslims in the police force.
12:11 am
yeah, the muslims in the police force -- >> after 9/11, the fbi and the nypd blue -- nypd. that was a great show. great show, great show, they treated us like we treated the mob and gang investigations. they photographed everybody going in and out of mosques and they did all of those things like they did in social clubs in little italy and it worked. >> and when they find the mosque they say this is a great mosque. moving on to more serious matters. trump sweeted use a picture of milania from a gq ad. be careful or i will spill the beans on your ad. >> fantastic. the ad targeted mormon women in utah ahead of tuesday's contest.
12:12 am
if you try to attack heidi you are more of a coward than i thought. classless. cruz had more to say on cnn. they noticed something interesting about that. >> and if donald wants to get in the character fight he is better off sticking with me because heidi is way out of his league. >> do you want a character to debate, bob? stick with me. sydney allen wade is way out of your league. >> wow. not to be outdone trump responded with a line of his own . >> you think? >> you think? >> you think? >> you think? >> am i right? >> here is the thing, ted.
12:13 am
if you are going to quote a movie about a president make sure they are a republican candidate. >> that guy was a democrat. >> yep. >> it's over. >> it's over for him. >> they don't make movies about the republican presidents. >> it is illegal. >> what was that, nixon? >> if he wanted to gain some points in the polls he really ought to quote movies made in the last two years. i think honestly that every time trump says anything from this point on he should sing that song from "frozen" right? that would get the american people. >> thanks now it won't get out of the -- out of my head all night. isn't it a crime to quote a movie? >> i i can't believe i remember seeing that movie. this has never happened.
12:14 am
what kind of america is this? >> we did the same thing when we saw "the apprentice." >> i think cruz -- it wasn't like i am going to plagiarized. he would show the clips and be all over the news. >> i don't think that's it. i think he watches a lot of movies and he quotes the princess bride all the time jie. you're right. he loves lines. >> thank god it wasn't a quote from "princess bride" again. i'm happy about that. i don't know. when he says he wasn't behind it, i get it wasn't a super pack. i feel like he has some insiders. he didn't condemn them after they did. he wasn't like, whoa, whoa, whoa. wives are off the table. he said that's not me. stay away from my wife. >> i think he knows what the super packs are doing. it is inconceivable.
12:15 am
>> the point is somebody, i can't remember who it was, proved there was a person who was pushing this into the media. he has been caught. it was cruz's people who were pushing this out. i think this is crazy. it looks to me like trump's wife was extremely successful in her career. the idea that this is an ad for for -- in "gq" and this is like, come on. >> is there any beans to spill on his wife? >> on heidi? i don't think so. i don't know why those were beans that were spilled. trump is proud of the fact he chooses wives that are hot. he says as much. he said that's what -- i mean you can't say -- a piece of ass is what he calls his women. this doesn't seem like a smear. it seems like something he should be proud of. that's my wife and that's why i married her. moving on, baseball

players are getting squeezed again. first they took away their steroids and now the smokeless tobacco. they are banning dip from sporting events following in the steps of l.a., boston and chicago. that means everyone at games including the players must refrain from chewing tobacco. the fine for breaking the law is expected to be $100. wow. the average major league salary is is i believe $754 million. $100 adds up. that's like a per diem. an anonymous met said i would like to see how they would enforce that. if somebody sees you chewing will they reach over the railing and hand you a ticket when you are walking off the field? is smokeless tobacco even still popular with players? let's check out a spring training game from today.
