campaign. we've got the full spectrum of the republican party coming together and uniting behind this campaign. >> so how did trump lose this bad? the same reason he's been doing so good. make valid points and reach millions. but it is the same bull headedness that is resisting a change in the course. trump has earned the loyalty of many but he is squaunldering it. he keeps making supporters scramble and backtrack. has there ever been a candidate who needs so many volunteer spokesmen? and as brilliant a marketer as he is, he really misread how to scale his market beyond a narrow market. ignoring the guardrails of criticism. too many yes men ends in a sound no from everyone else. >> let's go to his concession speech.

oops, he didn't give one. rather than saying something him br and funny, he release ad weird angry statement. his message, nothing is ever his fault and he calls cruz a trojan horse. but that's someone who acts one way to get in and acts another way after like telling people you'll deport millions ask then winking at the press. his reactions are impulsive. wisconsin isn't the end and it could be a new beginning for trump. right now, old trump can't win the general. but maybe new trump can. he'll need help and not from the usual suspects. >> all right. is this a turning point for mr. cruz? >> that's what he called it. he gave a speech in which he finally started to say that he had a general election message. he ended by saying hillary clinton, here we come. he was able to take a deficit to

donald trump in february and turn that around to very significant win yesterday in wisconsin. a couple things i noticed in the exit polls. for the first time in the contests, cruz beat trump among noncollege degree holding and blue collar voters. they had all gone to trump. the other thing that cruz was able to pick up last night in wisconsin that he didn't have elsewhere was somewhat conservative. very conservative have mostly been with him. he also added somewhat conservative tom to his win. i don't know if he can keep it going but the momentum felt like it was on his side. >> i would say you hedged your bets. you're saying he could come back from this? he is still the front-runner. >> if he can do what he needs to do, get over 50%, that will be very strong positioning for him as well. pennsylvania, california, there's still a lot of play left

here. perhaps maybe a concession speech done in the right way would have been helpful but right now it is all about focusing on strategy. what you need to do going forward. in the meantime, there is still some carcass with some meat on it. he is picking it clean and getting more delegates and he is saying, that's what i'm going to do. that is his strategy. in the end, all the delegates will matter. it will be a numbers game down to the finish line. what i see with new york especially, if kasich and cruz can work together in some meaningful way to be able to prevent donald trump for getting the 50%, that will be helpful ultimately to cruz. >> what do you think? does he need to challenge his strategy? >> no. he's winning. so in your monologue you said he leaves his supporters needing to scramble and explain. do you realize 21 million votes

have been cast on the gop side? 8.3 million have been cast for donald trump? that means 8.3 million people, you just said, i guess say need scramble and explain. i think they might beg to differ with you. trump is getting 39% of the vote. cruz is getting 30% of the vote. trump is getting 45% of the delegates. cruz is getting 32% of the delegates. the guy is still winning and as kimberly astutely points out, i am a 19, he might end up with 95. all of them in new york. and a week later, 175 delegates. he is winning in every state according to real clear politics. so re-evaluate that after. so if he come out with substantially fewer delegates than what it looks like now, then maybe yeah. maybe you have to go very hard june 7th in california.

>> it's not that he needs the air time but i think it would have looked good. and he had a real message. his real message afterwards came in that, i guess it was an e-mail in which he said, he sent the letter out. he thought that cruz was not just a puppet but a trojan horse for the gop establishment. if he wants to make that case, he can make it. there is a lot to be said about the kind of super pacs that came in to support ted cruz in wisconsin. so i think there is a legitimate argument. it made it look as if his mouth had sour grapes in it and he was staying away from the cameras. i think the key point for me is it will be harder to get the 1327, the number needed to achieve outright victory before the convention. this makes it more likely we'll have an open convention. and then you'll be in for all kinds of shenanigans, as eric regularly points out. so what happened is cruz doesn't have a chance to win outright.

but he is now, he and the republican establishment succeeded in blocking, stop donald trump at all costs. stopped in wisconsin. i don't think they can stop him. i don't think they can stop him in new york. i don't think they can stop him in what they call a card here on the east coast. we did see today in polls ted cruz is up 20 points on national polls. so maybe people, maybe the two-thirds of republicans who don't vote for donald trump are coalescing. will cruz be that unity candidate? >> 70% are not voting for ted cruz. who are not voting for is such a misnomer. whatever. why say they stopped donald trump with 42 delegates when you have 300 delegates coming up in a couple weeks that are heavily in favor? that's the argument.

>> that is, the demographics in wisconsin should have been helpful to donald trump. >> why? >> the working class. >> they were the same demographics as michigan. if you look down. do you want to disagree with me? because that's accurate. >> wisconsin is a very liberal state. >> not among republicans. >> in michigan if you look at the income level. the number of people who were $100,000 or less annual salary, it is the same. evangelicals, the same. the a month ago, it was that they would do well in the rust belt states. that could have actually been true in wisconsin. but something did happen between february and last night. and trump had been up in the polls over cruz by 8 to 9. and that flipped in april. yes, that might show that you

need a change. when you're a lifelong republican, you've always voted republican. you want so much to win the white house next year. you're looking at electability. cruz won that last time last night as well. because rubio had won before. there was a report yesterday in politico that that were not just valid by the trump campaign about a lack of infrastructure and campaign stats in key states like ohio. which is a must-win state. you have to be able to run a good campaign in those key states and you can't turn it on in august. you have to be there every single day. if the election come down like it usually does, to ohio, you have to be in. there so i think there are changes that the trump campaign needs to make. and i think trace gallagher tonight has a report that there are rumors that there are staff going to be added. >> before you get to the

general. don't forget the hunt for those uncommitted delegates among republicans. so cruz is out there in that contest because he has the staffing infrastructure right now. he has people on the ground. they're going after the uncommitted delegates. trump is losing in states where he won the majority of the vote. he is losing delegates. >> there is a good reason to back and support ted cruz and other reasons to back and support ted cruz. our friends glenn beck, mark levine, are backing him because they like his conservatism. they like his message. that's the reason to back ted cruz and i would agree with that. this whole idea of backing ted cruz so youett get to the contested convention is the wrong reason to back ted cruz. you're dividing the republican party and it will only guarantee or seriously assist the hillary clinton poetus 45 by doing so.

who do you think hillary clinton would most want to run against now? just four months ago, january, february, the hillary campaign was saying we dome want to run against trump. now they've change their tune because it shows she would beat him by 11 points. theon person she would lose to, compared to cruz and even kasich. so i think there's a point to be made on the general election thing. if you are glenn beck or anyone, to say i want to preserve the chance to win. that would be another reason to support someone to beat her. >> to back cruz? >> is glenn beck -- are glenn beck and mark now considered establishment? it has become meaningless. >> i clearly defend -- >> the karl roves, lindsey

victory. he is now more confident than ever that he can pull off an upset in clinton's home state of new york in two weeks. listen. momentum is starting there campaign 11 months ago. the media determining that we were a fringe candidacy. momentum is starting the campaign 60 to 70 points behind secretary clinton. within the last couple of weeks, there have been national polls which have had us 1 point up or 1 point down. i believe we've got an excellent chance to win new york and a lot of delegates in that state. >> today front-runner cast doubt on sanders' qualifications, arguing he hasn't done his homework. she's hoping voters would agree. >> i think that what he has been

saying about the core sloo in his campaign doesn't seem to be rooted in an understanding of either the law or the practical ways you get something done. and i will leave it to voters to decide who of us can do the job that the country needs, who can do all aspects of the job. both on the economic domestic issues and on national security and foreign policy. >> all right. can you fill us in? what are the democrats thinking? >> well, everybody is do you meaning delegates. republicans and democrats. and last night, sanders got 45 delegates. you hear all this talk. no, clinton got 31 delegates. so in terms of the absolute numbers, not much of a catch-up by bernie sanders last night. but what bernie sanders is talking about, momentum, that's very real. bernie sanders not only momentum in terms of winning, in terms of money. remember, he outspent hillary

clinton. i think by more than $1 million in wisconsin. he is coming into new york. he will appeal to those young people who are so passionate. what will happen to the minority voters? he lost them in wisconsin. but it is a very white and liberal, heavily liberal state. kimberly was telling me. the voters, they said bernie is about right. >> aept% -- >> we had it. i can pull it up here. we missed you last night on election night coverage. so voters thought he was just about right when it came to being liberal enough. 63%. 8% said he is not liberal enough. >> so scary. so scary. >> so that's present wonderful for dairy land. but it won't happen in new york. not with wall street right here. people think he is pretty liberal, if not a socialist.

so i think it is a different equation. the ads are coming in. the passion is coming in. you'll have all the hollywood celebrity times. it will be interesting. do i think he can win here? today is april 6th, my grandson's birthday. happy birthday, ely. but i don't think he can win here. >> does she have enough left over affection and appeal from her time as senator here? regardless of the other things she's done, do the democrats like her? >> she certainly has enough people that she's had influence with and developed relationships with. they'll come out to support her. she'd better not lose new york. i mean, that's a huge problem. how do you lose when you're a senator here? you saw what happened with marco rubio with florida. she has to do well here. that's why she packed up and left the cheese state and went to brooklyn before the votes

were even cast in wisconsin. she was leading the leaves there. she's got to attack him. she's got to go art of war and chop this guy up. he was supposed to be out of it already by now. it was kind of a joke. it was a saturday night live thing. not so funny anymore. he appears to have momentum and more stamina and in terms of the key demographic, he is motivated followers out there that want to be behind him. and he has more cash. >> should he change the way he attacks her? >> here's what i think is happening. although bernie sanders had a big win on the number of votes, he had very, very miniscule moving up. and i think it was 10. i think it was only ten additional, what i do know is she only needs 32% of the vote going forward. 32% of the delegates going forward. it is basically in the bag for her. especially when you turn to the northeast where the black vote

is much more substantial than a state like wisconsin. >> or california. i think bernie keeps playing the likable guy. and in the event, as unlikely it is a may be, if she gets indicted, he steps in and he's the hero. the democrat that no one can take down. >> interesting. let me ask you about national security. earlier today he was asked by a reporter what he would do if they captured a terrorist. what would they do next? and he said i haven't given that a lot of thought. >> this is not a priority. the problems in the world when it comes to progressive are within our own borders. everything, we are the cause of all the earth's problems. 73% of his voters are under 35 years old. they know about as much on economic matters as do i about

dunking a basketball. we talk about being worried about trump. you should worry about sanders. somehow this system is flawed. it is, maybe but it is the best we have. they think a free market is a thrift shop that sells vegetables. they have no knowledge on how the world works. sanders is a nice guy. he is fun to listen to. he symbolizes an ignorance about how the world works. >> who would have thought you're backing clinton? >> you know why? he doesn't want a virtual reality president. did you see the one with president obama? the economy is great. no threat from isis. i'm great. you need someone who is a realist who has thought about what we need to do as it relates to national security and foreign policy. >> and we would like to have bernie sanders here. >> big time. >> i would love to talk to him.

handing remittances are impractical. the notion that we'll track every western union money that is being sent to mexico. good luck with that. >> okay. the president frequently takes the opportunity to voice his criticism of the gop front-runner. >> they tell us that the person who made the statements doesn't know much about foreign policy or nuclear policy or the korean peninsula or the world generally. >> we have heard vulgar and divisive rhetoric aimed at women and minorities. at americans who don't look like us or vote like we do. as a citizen who will still be leading this office, i will not support somebody who practices that. >> can you imagine donald trump standing up one day and delivering a state of the union address? >> i can imagine in a saturday night skit.

>> does it actually help trump rather than hurt him? what do you think? >> i don't think it helps trump by any means. trump is getting it from all angles, from democrats, from the competitors in the gop race, from the establishment. now you have the president of the united states trashing him. taking time. and i point this out. taking time out of a press conference he gave about taxes about, why company are leaving the united states to go to foreign countries where tax rates are lower. and what was lost in that whole thing, obama probably loved the question. it got, it didn't allow anyone to ask the real question. why would you punish companies that want to do this? when the smarter way to do what you're trying to do, company staying in america will be dropping our own tax rates so we're competitive rather than finding a way to punish them for doing so. it is ridiculous. if trump were smart and all the gop candidates were smart, they would say obama has it backwards. and he proved it at that press

conference. >> absolutely correct on the tax code. the corporate tax rate, president obama did a couple of budgets ago propose a 27% rate. it is now 39% which makes companies want to leave america and go somewhere else. that's not good for anybody in america. so obama proposed 27%. republicans proposed 25%. as i understand, i guess they couldn't come to a deal and i would assign blame to both sides. that problem could have been solved and they wouldn't have had to have that press conference yesterday. if write president obama my advice would be to do what we did in 2008. you draw a red line that you actually don't allow to be crossed. and you say i won't talk about the candidates. i'm not talking about the campaign. i am not going to do it. you have to be very disciplined. if you do that, you can hold the line. then in august or september, after there are clear nominees. if you want to campaign for the democrat, okay. but i wouldn't do it until then.

none. zero. >> are you changing the topic? >> no. he was happy to be able to get that trump question. we've done -- all i've seen the last two days are segments on why trump is the topic of conversation with the president. why not president obama's own tax inversion policy will drive companies even further away from america. >> i would say the current policies are driving them away. we have to fix it. >> if president obama condemned brussel sprouts, i would start eating brussel sprouts immediately. and i hate brussel sprouts. >> have you had them with bacon? they're amazing. >> no. i'll try it. everything with bacon is great. this is coming from an individual who, before he was president, was a community organizer. who palled around with reverend wright. so talking about donald trump is a little rif. there is a lot of arrogance about his criticism.
