2:00 pm
hello, every one. i'm dana perino. it's 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five." the republican presidential race has moved here to new york where the next contest takes place on april 19th. a new poll shows this. cruz did not get a warm reception from some in the big apple. take a look. >> no business being in the bronx. this is an immigrant community. we deal with climb change every
2:01 pm
day. to receive this right wing bigot is an insult. >> and trump piled on. >> lyingin ted cruz came today. he couldn't draw 100 people. do you remember during the debate when he started lecturing me on new york values. like we're no good. like we're no good. >> i came up with lyin' ted. you have to spell it right. l-y-i-n l-y-i-n-a. >> let's be clear. the people of new york knows exactly what it is. the values of liberal politicians like cuomo, spitzer, like charlie rangel.
2:02 pm
all of whom donald trump has supported, given tens of thousands throughout the year. >> here we go. what do you think about the protester of ted cruz? >> what do you expect? ted cruz going to the bronx is like bill airs going. by new york standards, that was pretty mild. he didn't get stand. he was not pushed in front of a subway which is par for the course in de blasio's new york city. as for trump being up, he'd better be up. he is not just from new york city. he kind of is new york city. he is up there with the statue of liberty, the rockettes and public urination. >> now they'll focus on new york for the next ten days. >> and trump is looking pretty high energy. he is like a rapper. he is back with his people,
2:03 pm
feeling confident. enjoying the lead but not taking it for granted. he did kansas toll reschedule the california trip which is smart. shore this up before worrying about that next. >> i don't think he has much to worry about in new york. >> we looked at the map and we saw what happened in wisconsin. where trump didn't perform as well as he want to. people were calling that a loss. i thought two weeks! boy, did that change in a hurry with that rally, that pace. something interesting he said. that pace, it is long island. it is known for one of the best golf courses in the world. but the most important part is he says he played, he is warming up the audience. and i think he was warming him up. he talk about playing bethpage. but bethpage is a public golf course. he was one of them. all the men in the crowd, yeah. home you get a tee time at
2:04 pm
bethpage. i think this will play to his strength, to spend 14 days. i think he's forgotten about wisconsin. he will focus this. i came to new york 30 years ago. i'm a midwesterner. i believe in everything about the midwest. i have midwestern values. when 9/11 happen, i turned into a hybrid new yorker. really, really stick it to them now. >> i think he was -- i agree. it sounds like breakdown for iowa. when he is explaining about the situation when a young man is talking about the terrible conditions in the bronx, there is a consequence to liberal governance in new york city. it's not donald trump's fault but that is the case. if you're a republican and you live in manhattan, or in the congressional district. you're like worth 10,000 votes
2:05 pm
in iowa. that one person because of the way they deal with the voting in the end. >> yeah. i think that donald trump will do great in new york. i don't see any problem for him. interesting though. ed, who we both know. he thought this two-week period if you had a situation where cruz did well and wisconsin could change the direction, the dynamics of the campaign. the gop establishment is still trying to stop donald trump. but what we've seen so far is, it doesn't look like it. i don't see it. i don't know. i don't know what the advertising is like. what i can say though is, i noticed donald trump kind of behind the scenes trying to build more of an infrastructure to his campaign. not only in terms of what come next in new york, working against the republican establishment in those states, but he has to now chase those undelegated delegates.
2:06 pm
for the first time he realizes this is serious. what goes on at an open convention is way above his head. he thinks he is tough in new york? watch back stabbing. we just passed the ides of march but baby, you'd better watch your back. >> it might be best for ted to forget new york. just give it up. it won't be a win. maybe you keep trump under 50%. his time might be better spent for the april 26 race in pennsylvania. >> connecticut. >> 172 delegates that following week. maybe spending time will and employing that strategy, too. he said i won't do well in iowa. i'm going straight to new hampshire. >> donald trump did talk about new hampshire. talking about his strategy about, the convention and how many delegates if he deaoesn't t
2:07 pm
there. >> i was not expecting to do well in wisconsin. i got 36 or so, 36%. we picked up some delegates. i was pretty happy. >> ted cruz makes a speech. he is at the turning point. >> i don't think it is a turning point. i'm hundreds of delegates up on ted and i think we'll do really well. >> we have a plan for the convention. the convention to get 12, 1237. do you have a plan if you don't? >> i do. i have a very strong plan. >> he has a strong plan. going to be a good plan. i thought they decided not to go to colorado. colorado is electing its delegates this weekend. not that many delegates but still deciding not to go. >> with that excellent interview, he should be at fox. >> he works a lot. >> when he asked about a turning point, i think it is a turning point but it isn't for cruz. it should be a turning point for trump to figure out, what happened. right now it is important for
2:08 pm
the delegate count but what about the long term big picture which you alluded to. being thrilled that you're way up in new york over cruz, it is like jumping out of a window and enjoying the trip down tex bottom is hillary and she's up by 10. and that might change because these polls are so early. he has to start thinking about, it is not a a comforting thought to get the nomination if you're going to get shellacked. at least for a conservative like me. i want someone electable. >> i think they're smart. yesterday the trump campaign was meeting and trying to figure out where to go. then this announcement. pulling out today, 7 in 10 americans in virginia. a must-win state for republicans. also troubling. even mississippi and texas looking like they're in play with hillary clinton possibly winning the normally red states. >> so it is important to look at it from a macro level to see, let's talk about the general
2:09 pm
election. let's talk about the electoral map. where you need to perform. the number one states you have to win to get the presidency. however, like in any great race, you have to make the playoffs before you can be in the world series. you have to focus on the task at hand and a lot can happen during an election process. depending on whether or not people get behind who have the eventual nominee is, then you deal with that. then the super pac money comes in. you never know on the other side. >> one thing it is not is boring. we have more next. who is more qualified? bernie sanders or hillary clinton? they're both actively trying to disqualify each other. every insurance policy has a number. but not every insurance company understands the life behind it. for those who've served
2:10 pm
and the families that have supported them, we offer our best service in return. usaa. we know what it means to serve. get an insurance quote and see why 92% of our members plan to stay for life. mary buys a little lamb. one of millions of orders on this company's servers. accessible by thousands of suppliers and employees globally. but with cyber threats on the rise, mary's data could be under attack. with the help of the at&t network, a network that senses and mitigates cyber threats, their critical data is safer than ever. giving them the agility to be open & secure. because no one knows & like at&t.
2:12 pm
2:13 pm
so when you get home, all you have to do is enjoy it. we're doing everything we can to give you the best experience possible. because we should fit into your life. not the other way around. hillary said bernie is not qualified to be president. >> let me put it this way. what he has been saying about the core issue in his whole campaign doesn't seem to be rooted in an understanding of either the law or the practical
2:14 pm
ways you get something done. >> and bernie said same to you but more of it. >> she has been saying lately that she thinks that i am quote/unquote, not qualified to be president. i don't think that you are qualified if you get $15 million from wall street through your super pac. i don't think you are qualified if you're supporting virtually every disastrous trade agreement which has cost us millions of jobs. >> so we have two leftists arguing who is more qualified to run the greatest country ever. two progressives, debating which one should run a capitalist system. it is like watching two debate who should fly a jumbo jet. or watch a can of beans arguing the meaning of life with a box of mud. it is like me and dana arguing about basketball. these two are not qualified to
2:15 pm
have the actual debate about qualifications and they're not qualified to ask you. why yet these are the choices. and how did we get here and why? america is a country who has help reverse disease, free people from tyranny. there are millions of americans hoods it is time to replace the evil system with notions that have failed all over the world. the worst part, it is not the candidates but the millions of earnest supporters, born and raised on myths and misconceptions about america. when you look at bernie and bernieitis, you see what they're saying. you hear it. how weird to rule the free world and citizens race to embrace the doctrine of the vanquished. >> it's true. >> it is true. thank you very much. >> coming up, kimberly, kimberly, kimberly. it is a funny debate to see two
2:16 pm
left wingers talk about who is better at running a capitalistist country. >> top ramen or cup of noodles. >> there i never made top ramen. >> you pour in the water and wait. >> i hated the vegetables in the cup of noodles. they're hard. >> no. you have to let it soak for a while before you put in it your mouth. figure it out. amateurs. here's the deal. so this is the chance to hit her hard. he'd better do it in the debate. like we were talking about, take her out, leg sweep her, chop her up, go art of war. kind things like. that act like you want it. he actually has a chance if he keeps it going. the problem is if it wasn't for the super fix with the super
2:17 pm
delegates. >> finally they're doing what's going on on the right. she said it first. he said she's not qualified and he said i read it in the "washington post" headlines and it must be true. then she walked it back. i know he is more qualified than the republicans. >> it is nice to focus on this. they've been getting a free ride. >> i'm going to disagree with you on something. the question is who is qualified. let's say that there's not any other choice. there is no question she is heads and tails, she is so far above him in qualifications. >> heads and tails?
2:18 pm
>> i'm -- >> kidding. >> oh, my gosh. >> can i make my point? she's more qualified on national security. if you are worried as a mom out there in voting land. if your biggest worry is national security and the protection of your family and those are your choices, you are absolutely going to go for hillary. on the bernie side, significant escalation. he decides to say, she is not qualified. he has a new speech writer. or he is going to edit out all the work they put into it. he says she's not qualified and he hits her where it hurts the most. special interests, money, trade deals. the thing that would probably help him the most. once again, she's most vulnerable on trustworthiness and honesty and he will never go there. which tells me he doesn't really want to win. >> that's her achilles' heel. >> you said voting land.
2:19 pm
i imagine that would be a place to go to as a kid. all right, juan. dana makes a good point. the national security, maybe hillary is more experienced. even then she made us vulnerable with the e-mails. >> first of all, there is no question she is better qualified. just look at her experience. and look at his experience. >> the second thing is every political strategist around is making the point you're making at the teenaable. go after her trustworthiness. almost 70% of americans have a question about whether or not she is a truth teller. also she is tough and better able to handle terrorism but there is a weakness there. the question is, how does bernie go after her? the democratic base is not that interested in the e-mail story. but guess what. he has to take advantage somehow of the idea that democrats as
2:20 pm
well as republicans question whether or not you can trust her. >> i know she has the experiential. i don't know that that necessarily makes her more qualified shelf screwed up the iran deal. she screwed up libya. there is an bundle yachbls experience there. but taking on the surface and figure out what happened after her, she left in her wake. bad things have happened. >> and the clinton foundation. >> what i'm saying to you is, you can nitpick and say i didn't like that. she screwed it up. here's what it comes down to. the tough guy is in the arena, in the fight. and people have seen her in the fight for years. they value that she often time comes out on top.
2:21 pm
they like it. she's a boxer. she is 1 in 47 but she is not qualified to get in the round with mike tyson. >> are you kidding? she's won two senate races in new york state. she had to defeat a republican. >> she also had to beept democrats to get it. >> this was on the heels of bernie having a very bad sitdown. >> the daily news editorial board. >> yeah. but you're making the case. he doesn't even know what he's talking about. >> they're both poor choices. >> you don't have to pick either. you can go like this, pass. >> it is like this. top ramen or cup of noodles. >> top ramen is a little brick. >> you take two packets. >> i feel a kimberly's food
2:22 pm
court coming for friday. >> let me go back to the tangle of spaghetti. there was a poll today. and this poll was from pugh. it says 70% of americans can't stand donald trump. 50% of republicans can't stand donald trump. because i'm coming to something about hillary here. that when it -- look. cruz is at 59% negative. when you get to hillary clinton, it is 55%. so if you talk about ramen, we're talking about i don't want to eat that tonight. >> it is like ramen with kale. no more healthy eating. ? >> that was fun. diet stuff embedded in there. warning to troubled teens has gone, i love this phrase, viral.
2:23 pm
2:24 pm
these little guys? they represent blood cells. and if you have afib - an irregular heartbeat that may put you at five times greater risk of stroke - they can pool together in the heart, forming a clot that can break free, and travel upstream to the brain where it can block blood flow and cause a stroke. but if you have afib that's not caused by a heart valve problem, pradaxa can help stop clots from forming. pradaxa was even proven superior to warfarin at reducing the risk of stroke, in a clinical trial - without the need for regular blood tests. and, in the rare event of an emergency, pradaxa is the only oral blood thinner other than warfarin with a specific reversal treatment to help your body clot normally again. pradaxa is not for people who have had a heart valve replacement. don't stop taking pradaxa without talking to your doctor. stopping increases your risk of stroke or blood clots. ask your doctor if you need to stop pradaxa before any planned medical or dental procedure. pradaxa can cause serious, and sometimes, fatal bleeding. don't take pradaxa if you have abnormal bleeding. and seek immediate medical care for unexpected signs
2:25 pm
of bleeding, like unusual bruising. pradaxa may increase your bleeding risk if you're 75 or older, have kidney problems, stomach ulcers, a bleeding condition, or take certain medicines. side effects with pradaxa can include indigestion, stomach pain, upset or burning. don't just go with the flow. go with pradaxa, the only blood thinner that lowers your risk of stroke better than warfarin and has a specific reversal treatment. talk to your doctor about pradaxa today.

remember this judge's name. she is doing some pretty special things to help troubled youth straighten themselves t. she didn't know she was being filmed last month when she lectured a group of teens in a program called consider the consequences. it's gone viral. see why. >> get yourselves together. why don't you want -- the way you're going, you will go to jail. or you will -- you're special, you're uniquely made. stop acting like you're trash and putting pictures of yourself on the internet. stop being disrespectful to your parents. care about your future. be somebody. anybody can be nothing. i don't even know you all personally but i love each and
2:28 pm
everyone of you. and i don't want to you come to my courtroom. >> the judge spoke about her tough love warnings on fox news this morning. >> they have so much value. if only i could show them their value as opposed to what they're headed toward. maybe that might make a difference. >> this is real talk. i think it is so important. judges can have such an impact on the lives of young children who are having a problem or transitioning. it is very easy to slim once you're in the juvenile system to start reoffending. there is a moment of time and opportunity to seize them and grab a hole of them and verbally shake them and say wake up. you don't want this life of crime. you don't want to do this to yourself. she said to the young women there, have some self-respectful she talks about not posting images of disrespect later. on and to the boys, not hanging out with the wrong people.
2:29 pm
we need more of this tough love. >> i was thinking, you see a lot of -- not just sitcoms but dramas. some sort of a legal story. i was curious about what you think about these judges, their entire day is dealing with controversy and possibly crime or a civil dispute. and it must kind of wear on judges after a while. >> i think it is difficult. especially when you're in the juvenile justice system and you're in the courtrooms and you see the young kids coming in. you have kids coming in. there were 13, 12 involved in homicides. shooting people. killing them. involved in gangs. they don't have any kind of positive role model. no father in the home. and she talks a lot about that too which is important. >> if i were a judge, this is all i would do. i would like to just work in a teen court. and yell at kids all day. frankly, the reason why this is news, it is so rare. adults these days i imagine have
2:30 pm
a hard time talking to kids. you don't know what they're going to do to you. you have somebody yelling at them. and kids like being yelled at. did you know that? kids need a little direction. they don't mind being yelled at. i notice that when i do my therapy sessions in my van. if i tell them they're wrong, they learn and that's good for them. she will get a judge show. >> i hope those therapy sessions in your van come to a stop after today. i think this is evidence of what we're seeing in terms of family breakdown. kimberly spoke about tough love. i think there was a tv show where they would take kids to the jail and show them. >> scared straight. >> my feeling is you have increased rates of family breakdown. the other thing is the dynamic often described by black leadership. it used to be if a kid went out and acted the fool, miss mary would say get your butt back in the house. who do you think you are?
2:31 pm
i'm going to tell your mom, i'll tell your daddy about this. today because of the family breakdown. oftentimes there is no one at home. or if you say, hey, your boy was out there. >> mind your business. >> yeah. i'm so grateful to this judge and the fact that people are reacting to her about a strong positive model of it is not about her. what is going on with kids who are lost. they have no sense of self or value. >> you and i both have boys. >> i think she is on the right track. it is a nice start. but i will be honest with you. anyone over the age of 25 years old is going to look at that and say that's wonderful. look what she's doing. it's fantastic. everybody below the age, here we go. you know what she could have done? lock them up a couple days.
2:32 pm
with the permission of their parents. if you're a good patieapparentlu will be all for it. let them have their liberties taken away. their cell phones taken away. eat the meals whether you like them or not and spend a few minutes. yelling at kids, yelling at teenagers, yelling at kids doesn't do squat. >> you can't just lock them up. >> mine is going on 18 years old. yours is 9? >> 9. yes. >> it doesn't matter what they say. you take car keys away, the cell phone warrick you can't go out. that's when you get change. a judge yelling at kids, that's great. some actionable feeling is what -- >> you are the hanging judge. >> those kids are in trouble.

. san francisco became the first city in the united states to approve six weeks of fully paid leave for parental leave. the cost is picked up by the state of california. but businesses will have to make up the difference. some restaurants say it will hurt their industry and other small business. >> i think it is a long time

coming that we get mandated paid maternity leave. is this really one more responsibility of the small business person in a restaurant environment? you'll to have pay 45% of someone's salary while they're gone and then actually hire someone else and train them to work. in person's job. >> but the law's supporters say new parents should not be saddled with financial strain. >> if you have that extra pay, you can have a family and go back to work. >> we need on stop forcing parents to make the terrible decision about whether to bond with a child or whether to put food on the table. >> california this week raised the minimum wage from $10 to $15 by 2023. what is going on here? is this good? is this evidence of a state that cares about families and people or is it a state that is driving business out the door? let me go to the californians on the panel. >> me? >> this is ant-childless.

2:40 pm
working model. >> here's my take. i always thought this was less about the finances than the time. new moms, new dads need time to bond with babies. i am a off? >> i don't think that you're off. the business owners have a great point. a lot to try to swallow and they will make decisions. especially on the minimum wage. if you can order by ipad instead of having an employee there, that's probably where this is going. and it might be any way because of consumer preference. young people prefer to order that way. when it come to the family unit, the private sector is stepping up. the big corporations can stomach this more than small businesses which is why they needed help from the city. we spend a lot on people in later years so i'm not entirely comfortable that this is the way it is going. that cities and company better figure out how to do it.
