tv The Five FOX News April 15, 2016 2:00pm-3:01pm PDT
2:00 pm
hello. it's 5:00 in new york city. this is "the five." one of new york's most popular newspapers has thrown its support behind donald trump days before the primary. they call the front-runner a potential superstar of vast promise who has the potential, the skill, the know-how, the values to live up to his campaign slogans to make america great again. some of trump's former apprentices disagree.
2:01 pm
they denounced the front-runner. here are two of them. donald's proposed policies and miss principles or the apparent lack there of make clear not only that he is unqualified to be president of the united states but also, he is a danger to our country and the world. >> i will say it a dr. jekyll and mr. hyde transformation. if the this came about ten years ago i would not have gone on season one of the apprentice. >> yesterday he called them six failing wannabes who just want to get back in the limelight. today he ignored them and took more shots at his opponents. special interests have total control over cruz, total control over hillary. she's terrible. lyingin ted cruz. he is going way down in the polls.
2:02 pm
cruz is going really down. people have been watching him. somehow there's really nothing compelling there. he is the last hope to stop trump. that is all he has going. that's not good enough. we have a movement going on. >> let's talk about that post endorsement. they can call it, they said he was a rookie. making rookie mistakes but they see promise. >> they said they called for more specifics as it relates to policy and that's been something people have been saying. yeah. now is a good time to do that. this is like really coming down to the wire here. and you can tell the enthusiasm that he seems to be feeling for himself. thing are going on the upswing. you can sense a bit of confidence. more confidence on his part now that perhaps he got through that rough two-week period.
2:03 pm
i think the endorsement was a big deal. as dana said, file it in the plus column. it better to have it in the plus column. last night we saw a rough night. he was having audio problems with his side staff. it seemed they weren't fully engaged with what he was having to say. >> it's interesting. i think there is a racial component to the critics. i think the post editorial was brilliant. i really do. i am not gushy about the new york post editorial policies or his writing generally. i thought this was spot on. and losers, wannabe bes, that was an example of his overkill. why does he have to crush these people? they have the opportunity to give their opinion about the
2:04 pm
candidates. i think they're wrong about him. i think his character will shine through. on the race issue. i think they've done. they no favor at all. with the african-american community. and i think that the pivot that the post speaks about in the editorial, you know, it's interesting. two sides of the political spectrum. yet we both have affection for trump. you see him as a true conservative. a person you take him at his word. i see him as the person who has known for many years. he'll moderate the policies on muslim expulsion or rejection there. >> can i clarify my position? i like the outsider status. donald trump also wrote an op ed today in the "wall street journal." the post endorsement.
2:05 pm
the op ed pushed back by the aapprentices. how do you bear the last 24 hours? >> i get the new york post at home. i'm subscriber and i get it every day. to me it was no surprise. i think they've been very favorable to him from the jump. outsiders race for a lot of years. even though they've been in the senate for so long. i think he is saying i would come in and have a totally different view of things and people kind of like that. i think trump's continuation of punching down against anybody. why not just say -- those guys are great. i wish them the best and move. on also in the "wall street journal." he now has a seven-day story about losing all the delegates in colorado. i think prwise, it helps with
2:06 pm
his people. they love the fight about the delegates and the rules. i think that if the shoe were on the other foot. if we the one in the hunt just behind ted cruz, he would have a different position and all the media attention would be supporting him because he's following rules. it is kind of a no-win situation if you're not donald trump. >> i highlighted, in that line, in the middle of the endorsement. this is an interesting endorsement. it is contingent on temperament. even when geraldo was talking about trump, you can see wishful thinkingful will this leopard finally change his spots? will the frog become a prince? who might kiss trump to turn him into the prince? had i know you want to raise your hand, kimberly.
2:07 pm
obama was talking about changing a country, the country is hoping that trump will change. this is becoming about him as a person and not -- it is not about making america great again. it is making trump not a jerk. that's what we're talking about. it was actually, i thought that the endorsement was highly reasonable. because there are people who like trump but have a problem with his temperament. so they're hoping, they're like my wife. once a week i get this speech. could you please stop doing this? he's just being nice to my friends when they come over. >> i like greg just the way he is. >> i never met one of those. >> he has to weigh that. there are people who like that he's blunt and he doesn't give a dam. i almost said something else. maybe less of that, more of this. if he does, maybe he's not as
2:08 pm
much fun. >> let me get this one. donald trump is the last person ted cruz would want to talk on the phone with. but he did accept the call last night, kind of. >> my home state o new york city. and people are still mad. they're mad ought for saying they had, quote, new york values. what did you mean by that? >> look, donald. i'm not going to pander to new yorkers. i love new york city. it is the greatest city in the world with the best looking -- [ cheers and applause ] when i said new york values, i was merely trying to say that i value new york. except i was saying it backwards. the way yoda would say it. >> i love yoda. i watch her every morning with kathie lee. >> i said this before, i give credit to trump. this is really the first crop of
2:09 pm
republicans in a long time that can go on these shows and hold their own and you don't go, oh, my god. i hope they don't screw up. that was a great joke. >> i want to say when i criticized the republican party, you were going to dana. the process of selecting the republican candidate with the heavy emphasis on the southern states initially, you have to be in some ways, you have to be a radical in issues like immigration. in issues like muslims and so forth. to me, trump is a ruthless businessman. or as a pragmatic businessman. so the path to the nomination, he went far right. he got steve king and those guys in iowa. and the sharp elbows. once he guess the nomination.
2:10 pm
>> that could be june 7. >> his trump is good. >> better than mine? ted cruz has really good comedic timing. >> i thought that was great. i would like to see more of that. it is more natural. funny, an attractive quality to have. >> john kasich is being bombarded with questions why he is still in the race. last night voters could not front him. >> don't you feel at some point that you have a responsibility to voters to recognize that they're not voting for you? >> let me tell what you the responsibility is. the responsibility is to run for an office and give people solutions and lift them. the responsibility is not to
2:11 pm
talk about dividing people, nashing teeth, turning them against one another. you know what? we're in new york. and there was this guy. he once said one time, it ain't over till it's over. his name was yogi berra. thank you. >> i open up the table. make one quick point. in order for john kasich to ever be nominated, the rules would have to be changed at the convention. and that's the point i've been trying to make for a month now. >> i would say, certainly a lot of people who think that john kasich is doing a disservice to the republican party, that he should get out and give cruz more of a window, open up that lane. but i'm going to till, i think looking at the polls and getting a sense of things. don't be surprised if came kasich does better in new york than anticipated. >> i agree with that. i think kasich will kill cruz. i think cruz will be lucky to get 15% and i think kasich is running for vice president.
2:12 pm
i really do. he knows with ohio, this bounty, right? >> he has the cash cow. right in that purple state there. and his skills in government he makes a perfect person for trump. >> kasich has the numbers in the general election to trounce hillary but he is getting beaten by trump now. i think those two things are related. the reason is that he is reasonable and the reasonableness is the reason he's beating hillary later. so the conflict. >> i agree. that's exactly it. that that's what it is. kasich is running the campaign that trump will run once he gets nomination. >> i was intrigued by that nice little match-up. so hrc and corey booker and then trump and kasich. and who wins? >> i think it is a well matched
2:13 pm
final. clear ideological choices. the capitalist versus the more progressive politician. >> are you going to be ambassador to puerto rico? i know we don't have one. >> i want puerto rico to become a state and declare bankruptcy. >> do you? >> i do. >> i think john kasich wants to be president of the united states. >> everybody wants to be president. >> but he's like, guess what? i'm the guy. i can beat her. >> we do realize for that to happen, the rules committee, all i hear from higher-ups and leadership is we're not going to change the rule. >> if he doesn't want to be vice president, why is he in it? >> why is bernie in it?
2:14 pm
he won't be the nominee. he is becoming the left wing rock star. >> if it weren't for the super delegates, bernie could have a chance. >> right. coming up, an explosive night in brooklyn as hillary clinton and bernie sanders faced off on the debate stage. we'll break it down in a minute. and later, facebook friday. post your questions for us. (war drums beating)
2:15 pm
2:18 pm
if you were watching the democratic debate last night you may have had to turn your volume down. it was loud and contentious. the most between hillary clinton and bernie sanders so far. >> i question her judgment. >> towed question my judgment. the people of new york voted for me twice to be their senator. and president obama trusted my judgment to be secretary of
2:19 pm
state. of the united states. i stood up against the behaviors of the bank when i was a senator. i called them out on their mortgage behavior. >> secretary clinton called them out. my goodness. they must have been really crushed by that. and was that before or after you received the money for the speeches? they must have been very, very upset by that. i'm sure a lot of people are very surprised to learn that you supported raising the minimum wage to $15. >> now wait a minute, wait a minute. i have stood on the debate stage with senator sanders eight prior times. >> excuse me. secretary? i think the secreta is confused a lot of people. i don't know how you say that. you say you wanted a $12 max minimum wage. >> if you didn't see the debate, that was the cliff notes version
2:20 pm
of the debate we provided for you. i have a few democratic friends. >> uh-huh. identify them. >> so i asked three of them what they thought of the debate last night. and one of them said, hillary, mopped the floor with bernie sanders. the other said bernie crushed her in the debate. and the third in a scale of 1-10, how irritated are the the clinton people bothered with sanders? a ten. >> a ten until he is destroyed. is that what it is? >> a 2. >> a 10 after 2. >> that is a call back. >> you know, i think -- >> if you like bernie, then you say that he crushed it. if you like hillary, you'll say th that. >> all three of my democratic friends agreed on? i have more than three. but these three, what they
2:21 pm
agreed on, the audience was annoying. you couldn't hear over them. they were egging them on. >> it was painful. it was like listening to a car alarm and a fire alarm going off time. it was painful. but the thing is, worse than how it sounded was what they were saying. we didn't talk about this last night. he thinks the true apocalyptic danger, the most frightening thing in the world is climate change in this era of cyber terror. this bored orders derangement that while this is happening, things happening in brussels and paris, he is talking about climate change. they talk about financial plans and up the big banks. she talks about shadow banks. she must have done some research. the people in the audience yelling and screaming, what do
2:22 pm
they think they are going to get out of the breaking up of the big banks? i don't think they've ever connected the dots. >> i don't think they understand what that means. they get over extended on loans, the taxpayers would have to pick up the pieces. if they're smaller, they can have better oversight. i would think the biggest hurled hillary has to get over is this trustworthy thing, right? last night she really blew it on the transcripts. she needs to show the transcript. to at least bring back some of her credibility. but something else happened today. i was watching another network. a liberal leaning network. and there is a hillary clinton surrogate on there and she said, no, mrs. clinton is not in favor of a federal $15 minimum wage. that's what they argued about right there. they just split a hair today trying to clean up her mess from
2:23 pm
last night when she said she's been saying it for eight different debates. she's in favor of the $12. that's where she is. >> nothing wrong with that. >> but she -- >> i think had what the transcripts, another of those trivial issues. >> in the senator disagrees. >> i think it is a trivial issue when compared to, you ask the question, why is the audience so riled up? why are they so energized? why do they want to break up the banks? their perception of the opportunity to succeed up the ladder of the social ladder, that all of our parents have done. they see that ladder is broken. they see the big bank where they're getting $20, $30 million a year compensation for the ceo and they can't get a job for $40,000. that's what they see. they seep an income inequality gap. >> they're obviously blind.
2:24 pm
they're not seeing the real world. this has never been a better time to be alive. we have a less poverty than we've ever had. better technology, better health care, better everything than their parents or their grand parents. >> it is a romantic movement. >> there is nothing wrong with that. and the picture -- >> the greenland ice melt starting sooner in the calendar year than it ever has. those are things they think about when they're 25 years old. >> true. and then they get a job and get married and have kids. >> and then they become republicans. the a bank don't make any more than apple. >> they don't go after george clooney. they don't go after -- >> isn't it that the verizon guy gets $18 million a year plus? >> what does the verizon worker get? i'm saying.
2:25 pm
>> a verizon worker makes less than the ceo. good point. >> you know what i'm talking about. can we get bigger and bigger -- >> facebook friday, please! >> she's talking a big game about breaking up big banks or the consumer versus bankruptcy laws. if she is selling that. >> show me, eric -- why do you care about that? it's not the pandering. all the politicians do that. you're looking for hillary clinton promised goldman sachs, if they give her $200,000, she will do something for them.
2:26 pm
that's the issue. >> so we know about it. >> isn't there a scintilla of evidence -- >> yes! to reward the private donor. >> give me one. >> i'll give you one. >> elizabeth warren and find out how she pushed hillary clinton on bankruptcy laws when she was senator. >> you have to understand what you're doing here. you are taking this woman and you're saying that she's -- >> no, i'm not, geraldo. a liberal -- she will do something with the public trust. >> i'm totally enjoying this but i have to go. >> this is the longest back and forth on the show. >> the senator said she should release the transcripts. >> i say release the transcripts. i agree.

new parents have a lot more to worry about than just college to save for. in nearly half the country, it now costs more for moms and dads to sent their kids to daycare or preschool than to put them through college. that's true. in massachusetts, for instance, care for a preschooler is around $13,000 a year. an undergrad's college tuition is $11,000. what is the solution to make
2:32 pm
childcare more affordable? geraldo? do you have one? make a lot of money? >> i argued with eric about minimum wage. if you're a single mom and you want to work and you have to pay for your child to be taken care of while you're working, why would you work? you can't make that kind of money with $7.25 as your wage. 280, $300 a week? you literally cannot do it. you literally cannot work and have your childcare. i don't know what the answer is. in this regard, may be you need some socialization. >> but some people have to make that decision. they say, the family, husbands and wives. the husband will say, it is costing me money for you to go work. between the childcare and everything else, the family operates at a deficit.
2:33 pm
>> i would say the minimum wage isn't going to help that mother with one or two kids. it will force her, there will be fewer jobs. there needs to be more for people who have kids. i would argue that -- >> you should not be having children. if you have children -- religion, you can go to other people for donations. and plenty of social service nets available. >> that's so harsh and you don't believe it. >> i think it is a very serious issue. especially it is when women reentering the work forceful women in america working has provided a huge amount of benefit to our country. the question is, when they have children, do they come back? and the return rate is lower than we need it to be. i think there are some free market solutions. one is clearly there's a law of
2:34 pm
supply and demand problem. we need more daycare workers. so there's a business opportunity possibly. in addition, there is something the government can do. when you have a child, assuming you have a 527 account, it is like a 401(k). you set it aside. a little money you pay for college later. on who the to say couldn't have something like that earlier on in your life? as you said, privatize social security. you manage your own money better. there could be something like that to encourage an aability to save to help take care of your child so that the parent, teeth imagine or the woman, usually the woman, can return to work when she wants to. >> it's funny that daycare costs more than college. because college is now like daycare. i was thinking about. this i didn't have daycare. i grew up in the '70s. i remember a lot of my friends didn't have daycare.
2:35 pm
daycare was not even really a thing yet. if you want to know about the past, you can look at the present. you can look at immigrant families. what are the advantages they have? more likely to be two parents, a two-parent household and it is a father who works and a mom who doesn't. whether we like it or not, there are change in society that have brought benefits that have created consequences. they live with extended families. so everybody helps out with the chores and the childcare. there's something being lost in our country. this is not a new idea. people are discovering this. >> i want people to remember. that that is good old american values. >> what about companies? what about companies that have gyms and stuff? they've invested in that for their employers, for their
