penny for your thoughts and this is my lucky penny. another commenter says her kids have penny wars in school every year where each class competes to collect the most to win a prize. other than that, no, we don't need it. i don't know. they kind of clog up my wallet. i'm going to say no. thanks for being part of "the real story." >> announcer: now, "sheprigard smith reporting." live from the fox news deck. everything changed. we said here yesterday if hillary clinton and donald trump could just score big wins in the new york primary this t. could happen. and it did. everything changed. now clinton talking togetherness rolling like a nominee. and trump, he's not said lyin' ted since before new york voted. doesn't need to because donald trump wiped the floor with ted cruz and niz his new york values. ted cruz got nothing, not a single delegate. and donald trump almost ran the table. today in an everything changed world nobody on the republican side can win the nomination
12:01 pm
without shenanigans. nobody. it's contested convention or bust for anybody who's not trump. he got at least 90 of new york's 95 gop delegates. and he may get more. take a look at the wall over here. this is the state of new york, with long island, strong island down here. the city down here. and that's the rest of the state. it's very green, right? green is for money. green is for ted -- green is for donald trump. he won all but one of new york's 27 congressional districts. he won all but two in yellow by more than 50%. these two he won by less than 50%. so that means kasich gets one delegate from each of those. but he gets the rest. the one district he lost, the only one, is this little one down here in orange, which we show over here. it's part of manhattan. it's where he lives. he won trump tower itself, but he lost the district it's in on the upper east side of manhattan. john kasich won that by 70 votes. donald trump has now made it mathematically impossible for ted cruz to secure the
12:02 pm
nomination with pledged delegates alone. it's over. cruz has 559 right now. and there are just 623 pledged delegates left in the race. if you add that all up, he's still short of 1,237. senator cruz now appears to be acknowledging the math is lost for him. >> is this race going to cleveland, senator? >> we are definitely headed to cleveland. and in cleveland the people are going to prevail. >> cleveland going to prevail. at the convention. henan gansz. fox news has learned senator cruz is sitting down today with republican party members. at the rnc meeting, spring meeting in hollywood, florida. remember, they hate him. they always have. more on that in a moment. first a live look here at a donald trul p ralmp rally. kind of dark in indianapolis. we'll monitor that for any development. this all comes after the front-runner seemed to show his new political team has whipped him into shape. he gave a short subdued victory speech last night at trump tower here in manhattan.
12:03 pm
like i said, no "lyin' ted" for the first time since trump gave him a name. >> senator cruz is just about mathematically eliminated. we have won millions of more votes than senator cruz. we've won, and now especially after tonight close to 300 delegates more than senator cruz. >> "senator cruz." a trump adviser in an interview this morning said the term "lyin' ted" may make a comeback depending on how the senator reacts moving forward. the two candidates will face off again next tuesday in republican primaries in several states including connecticut. there's a new poll from quinnipiac university that shows donald trump winning that contest by 20 points. it also shows ted cruz in third place, behind john kasich. so were this a normal election cycle, this would be over. trump versus clinton for the presidency. that's it. move on. time to go. of course, this is not a normal election cycle.
12:04 pm
everything has certainly changed. new york did that. but the fight goes on. it's just no longer a fight to win the nomination in the usual way because that fight is over. carl cameron is live in washington. carl, it's a new day. >> reporter: well, trump's blocked cruz from 1,237. and now he's even trying to court the establishment a little bit with a trip to indiana today where he is having a meeting with governor mike pence. indiana's a red state that's going to vote two weeks from now. and cruz is really hoping to win there. trump is going to try to knock him off again. and if trump could pull off a victory in the hoosier state, that would be a huge step for momentum for him. trump's new hires are washington insiders with expertise in organizing convention tactics and election law. and he's digging in for a long and bitter fight. at the same time, his new advisers are trying to build more professional operation, really. and there's a handful of people he had until just a few weeks ago who were working with him but they were in many ways sort of newcomers. and many of them are a little
12:05 pm
bit upset about being layered in their jobs, et cetera. but there's a handful that argue that listen, we needed more help and we needed more experience and some of it has to come from washington. >> just how are ted cruz and john kasich explaining this blowout? >> cruz went to hershey, pennsylvania today, a state that's going to vote next tuesday, and is now on the way down to the rnc in florida. as you said, he's going to have his news conference in just a little while. he's talking with the party leaders about supporting him over trump in a contested convention even though he does have some critics at the rnc for some of his performance in the budget shutdown a couple of years ago. cruz says he's going to the convention no matter what and he dissed trump today for even suggesting that he should quit. listen. >> upon winning his home state, donald, with the characteristic display of humility, declared this race is over. manhattan has spoken. and if the rest of the voters would quietly go home now and allow him to give the general election to hillary, all would
12:06 pm
be better. >> and john kasich's already actually in florida courting those rnc members. and it's the last one before the convention. so a lot of the committees are talking about various different proposed changes to the rules, something that reince priebus says will not happen. this is the last one before that. so it's ultimately a big opportunity for kasich to make his argument to these delegates. these are the rnc members. there's 164 of them as opposed to the more than 2,400 that will be the convention delegates. and a lot of them he believes will accept his argument that when it comes to the general election, because he beats hillary more than most, he is the best candidate and the most experienced as both a governor and a former member of congress who's the only guy to ballot budget in the last half a century. >> cal camera ronn in washington. let's bring in rebecca berg, from realquickpolitics.com. thanks, rebecca. >> thanks, shep. how are you? big day. >> yeah. we spoke yesterday, saying wouldn't it be interesting if
12:07 pm
they had a how did that whole new york values comment by ted cruz affect people's votes? we didn't get that exact question but look at what we did get. who will you not vote for no matter what, republicans sf who will you simply not vote, new york republicans? not for cruz, 41%. that's new york values right there, isn't it? kind of wrapped up with a bow on top. new york values, right? >> it is. i mean, ted cruz was never going to do well in a state like new york, shep, but his advisers hoped a few weeks ago that at least he would pick up a couple of delegates, and he couldn't even do that. it was really a rout for ted cruz. not a good night. and really that poll shows me also how divided the republican party is right now and potentially is going to be going into the general election. this is a huge problem that republicans are going to have to grapple with. how do you unite this divided party? divided not only in two directions between cruz and trump but you have a bunch of moderates supporting john kasich who could feel disenfranchised if either ted cruz or donald trump xwkz the nominee. it's going to be a really difficult puzzle to piece this

party back together come the general election and come november. >> and there's demonstrable evidence of that, again, from the exit polls last night talking about how each side feels about what this campaign has done to the electorate. on the republican side, see that, the question was has this campaign seasons divided the party or energized the party? let's see the republican numbers there. about 60% of republicans say that it has divided the party. and it is exactly the opposite, even more so, on the democratic side. 66% of democrats say that their nominating process has energized the party. how big a problem is that for republicans? >> well, it's huge. it is the problem for republicans because in a normal election, shep, you would look at hillary clinton, high unfavorables, not a very charismatic candidate, certainly not someone who has grown stronger in the process of her democratic primary as a candidate. but she's going to be up against nominees on the republican side who have left the party divided, who are not appealing to most republicans. ted cruz and donald trump are not strong when you look at their polling against hillary
12:09 pm
clinton. and so it's a huge problem. if any republicans are staying home in november when their candidates are already at a disadvantage to hillary clinton, who is not on her own a strong candidate, then you're going to have a rout. and it's going to be a really, really bad election for republicans. >> you mentioned cruz and trump are not polling well in a head to head hypothetical against hillary clinton. you know who is polling well? john kasich. >> he is. and that's really at this stage his only argument for staying in the race. look, he says that he can go to the convention and win there based on this electability argument alone. i read a story for real clear politics looking at what his delegate operation has been like on the ground. ted cruz, as you know, has been very successful going around and making sure delegates are selected who will be favorable to him at the convention on a second, third ballot, any of these subsequent votes. john kasich's campaign i found has not been doing that. so it's not really clear how these delegates are going to come together for him at the convention. he thinks that the argument of electability, this polling that he talks about, is going to be

and lots of republican bigwigs have already said they'll be no-shows at the convention. the mississippi senator roger wicker telling "the hill" newspaper, "cleveland is the last place republicans in tough races want to be," especially if there's going to be what he calls a brouhaha over the nominee. and senator john mccain apparently agrees. the 2008 presidential nominee says no thanks, not me. i'll be somewhere else. not at that convention. for the first time in years. house speaker paul ryan is pushing his colleagues the other way. he's like, show up. it's your party. you should be here. come to cleveland. cleveland is lovely in the middle of the summer -- oh, wait, that's not his argument. speaker ryan will be the convention chairman. so he'll have to oversee the whole thing. jeb bush says he won't be there either. let's bring in shelby holliday, video reporter for the "wall street journal." there are divisions all over this party, and now there's divisions over whether people inside the party sheen come to the party party. >> should even show up. there's a major conflict of

interest here. on one hand you have speaker paul ryan saying this is our party, you've got to be here. t take responsibility for what goes down in cleveland. on the other hand, you have these incumbent republicans who want to keep their job. and the convention to them represents sort of a double-edged sword. one edge of the sword is donald trump is the nominee, they go to the convention, they risk upsetting donors, upsetting voters, risk looking like they're supporting a candidate that maybe their constituents don't like. and the other edge of the sword is a contested convention. messy, ugly, big floor fights. they might not want to be a part of that either. some of them are hedging it. and i think it's kind of funny. they say maybe we'll be there, probably not. but it's shaping up to be -- just even to talk about the contested convention is contested. >> jeb bush says no. >> jeb bush says no. >> what about marco rubio? >> i think marco rubio might be waiting to hear what the rules are. he could possibly be on the ballot. he will definitely be there. >> so the down side is just guilt by association? >> well, it could be personal

hillary clinton says victory is in sight. said it last night. and for the first time after her big win here in new york because math. still bernie sanders' people say they'll keep fighting. the question is for how long? maybe not too long. because last night when the new york game was lost for bernie sanders, just hours after his team said we're going to win, sanders did something he has not done since the hardcore campaigning began many months ago. he left his press people and left the entire press corps following him behind and went home, solo, back to new hampshire to evaluate -- i should say vermont to evaluate things. he talked to some locals on the tarmac in burlington and went home. that's often what candidates do right before they undo. right before they suspend things. he didn't drop out. but as i reported, everything has changed. here's a look at the latest delegate count. it's on the big wall here. you can see clinton has an even bigger lead.
