many conservatives are on the fence about donald trump being the nominee. how interesting it is, four years ago, paul ryan was mitt romney's running mate and romney was not conservative enough for republicans and yet this time around donald trump is probably more controversial. i suppose paul ryan has reason to be skeptical will. it sounds like things are going well in their world, chris, should we believe them? >> well, look, we'll not know if trump likes paul ryan or ryan likes donald trump. what matters is the face they give to the the public. they both, you talked about the pressure on ryan, there is also pressure on trump. ryan needs trump because he needs the millions of people

coming out to support trump to vote for republican candidates in the house. he can hold on to the majority and speakership. on the other hand, trump needs ryan and millions of conservatives that support him and fellow members in the house, because he can't win the presidency unless he has solid support from the republican base. he will need more than that and that needs to be the bare minimum. and that's what you saw today. it is in the sw interest of trump and ryan to come together. i am upon not at all surprised it didn't happen right away. as ryan said, we are planting the seeds and it is a process, you get a sense, that unless there is a huge bump in the road, by the time they get to the convention in cleveland in midjuly ryan and trump will publicly be on the same page. so politically what was the

purpose last week and what was the affect last week when ryan came out and said he was not ready to endorse donald trump who is likely to be the party's nominee. >> part of it, i think ryan was not willing to endorse. he believes in the issues and not that he doesn't like donald trump's haircut, he disagrees on free-trade and entitlement reform and a lot of things about immigration and muslims. there is a legitimate disagreement and shot across the bow to say, yes, you have your own brand, but you are going to be the republican nominee and you have to find a way to represent both. >> will the guy who wrote the art of the deal make a deal here? do you see them coming to terms on what it is to be a republican these days?

>> i don't think it is going to be exact. there will be areas of difference to use one of the cliches. it is a big tent to find ways to agree, and to disagree agreeably, but there is so much more to their benefit to be seen as united rather than divided. it will not help trump running for president or ryan upon and all of his house members running for reelection if there is a divide party. the concern for ryan, whatever supposed agreement you come to with trump, how much can you rely on it? trump holds that position and if you are ryan and a lot of the members running, you do have to worry about from now to election day you will get asked what about that? dew support what trump said or don't you you?

the republican convention just about two months away now, and with expectations of protests in the host city of cleveland, the head of that city's police union is sounding the alarm saying they're not prepared for what's coming. mike tobin live in cleveland with more. >> reporter: that's right, the head of the cleveland police patrolman's association says this town is not on track to be ready. he says riot gear was ordered late. 68 days to go until the convention and things like riot suits and bikes for patrols have not been made available and there is not enough time to train with the gear. >> you have to be proficient in being able to use this stuff. right now we're not. we have not been there. we don't even have gas masks at this point. >> reporter: councilman matt zone is chairman of public safety and has a different take. he says there is plenty of
