he was an inspiration to parkinson sufferers. it can be very debilitating. it can start with a tremor or a loss of the sense of smell. it is a resting tremor. not when you're moving, literally when you're at rest. it looks like you're tried to roll a pill. you get very rigid and your movement is very slow. it is because of a loss of dopamine. more recently for severe cases we're doing deep brain stimulation where we can cut off the electrical signal to the part causing the problem. nerve growth factors are being looked at, they are years away. the courage to overcome and

fight this, muhammad ali was an inspiration. >> i want today ask because dr. sigell did point out about the tremors, is it always very obvious, and what does it do to the body and is there any way to slow it down? >> i think the symptoms could be -- usually this is chronic and progressive. early diagnosis is the way to go. why does this happen. we don't have a real blood test or imaging study. it is all based on clinical symptoms. someone with a shuffled gate. tremors that start with one hand and go to another, and maybe loss of balance. that is parkinson's until proven

otherwise. part of the midbrain doesn't produce that el dopamine. i grew up watching him, but he defeated parkinson's. the brain is not meant to be punched at, and he took thousands of hard punches. what happens is because there is no room in the brain, it will have a ripple factor and it hits the brain back and forth. if it is midbrain you could get parkinson's, and outside could be alzheimer's. and there is scars and plaque that can form in the brain.

i think he should have quit earlier when there was symptoms. but he got the same mechanism of his muscles not functioning in the body. i think he got respiratory in x infection, the infection got into the system and became septic shock and we lost a champ and a hero. >> we're not boxers, we have not been susceptible to that, so what do we do if you're young. i know someone about his age with parkinson's and they live with it. >> there is a much better chance if you have head trama. it increases your risk by four

if we can identify the bacteria in inflammation of the gum that's is associated 60% of the time with pan degrkr pancreatic. by the time you have yellow eyes o or you're losing weight, it's too late. we have to catch it before it escapes the pancreas, but we can't do cat scans on everyone. a ct scan of abdomen is the most. 20% of the time i can do a whipple to remove it. we have to improve our imaging studies, but have to get it earlier. but maybe with something like this, we can find a marker, a bacteria. this bacteria has been found in

adult life. although i've had no side effects. but what are the long-term risks? >> i treat this every day. here's the bottom line. everyone who has had heart disease or stroke should be on statins but only 70% who are. for those with risk disease for heart attack or stroke like diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol, it cuts down your risk of heart attack, stroke and death. but it also increases your risk of diabetes, muscle problems. i check for muscle problems for everyone i have on this and muscle enzymes, fuzzy thinking or difficulty with memory has not been proven. but if someone complains about it, i will take it seriously, stop it and the problem reverses. >> dr. samadi, you take statins, i think, for high cholesterol. what's considered high cholesterol levels? and how long is too long to take

these statins? >> anything over 200 is high cholesterol. you also have to look at the ratio of bad and good cholesterol. this is a discussion you should have with your cardiologist and medical doctor. i think lipitor and statins are actually good medication and in certain patients who have had heart attack and stroke, it can actually reduce the risk of mortality, i think the whole concept of death from cholesterol -- we need cholesterol. it's a great thing for us. we have it in cell membranes, all over our body. this knee-jerk reaction that everyone should be on lipitor because it can prevent any heart problems, i don't buy it. i think many people are too many medications. the side effects are horrendous. although it's rare, breaking down the muscles and kidney failure, but that has happened. i too, myself, a couple weeks ago i had severe muscle pain,

fatigue, there's some memory loss. there's a lot of debate. i think too many people are taking too many things. let me tell you why i think -- >> i don't think you should treat a number here. you can't treat a number. you have to treat a patient. a patient with risk factors for heart disease up. don't just treat the cholesterol number, you treat the overall risk factor. those at high risk of heart disease or stroke, you really go to this. >> what i was trying to get at, i think for short-term period it's a good thing to go on these medications. mark is the expert in this, but i want people to try to get out of this statin zone, get exercise and healthy food. i know it's the same, boring stuff but short term is the way to go and then get to your normal habits. if you take statins and end up with diabetes, what do we do? we're not helping you. don't be on this for a long time. >> great advice.
