you for watching. hope to see you right here next week. california, here we come. hillary clinton, bernie sanders taking that state by storm. 48 hours from now, before five pivotal primary contests. first off, the big one is california. 475 delegates up for grabs in the golden state. a drawn-out fight for the nomination. may or may not come to a close. if it's sunday, you're with "america's newsroom." i'm bill hemmer. >> i'm martha mccallum. hi, bill. >> you look fantastic, by the way. >> what do you usually do? >> i'm usually calling you on the cell phone, saying, what's up? >> good afternoon, everybody. i'm martha mccallum. hillary clinton seeing the finish line as she tries to rally democrats after a bruising battle with a tougher than
1:01 pm
expected opponent. >> after tuesday, i'm going to do everything i can to reach out, to try to unify the dwrik party and i expect senator sanders to do the same, and that we will come together and be prepared to go to the convention in a unified way. >> that's what she would like. but is bernie sanders having any of that plan? there's talk of a contested convention. how fascinating the fliparound on this whole thing has been. it is anybody's game potentially in philadelphia. watch this. >> at the end of the nominating process, no candidate will have enough pledged delegates. the democratic national convention will be a contested convention. >> how about that? with only 60 delegates away for hillary clinton from clinching the 2383 number, which is now the big focus, it is so crunch time in california right now.
1:02 pm
jennifer griffin live in los angeles. so what's the atmosphere like out there? >> well, martha, incredibly lively. we are standing down here in east l.a. in mariachi square, where hillary clinton's communicator in chief bill clinton is expected to address this mostly latino crowd in the next hour. the polls, as you mentioned, incredibly close. bernie sanders and hillary clinton about one or two percentage points apart. it can really go any way, and this latino vote is extremely important to them. we expect that bill clinton will be arriving shortly, but what's interesting is that instead of attacking bernie sanders, hillary clinton continues to attack donald trump. >> donald trump talking about deporting 11 million people with what he calls a deportation force, which would mean, i guess, some kind of paramilitary
1:03 pm
police force, literally seizing people and putting them in camps, and then loading them on to buses and trains. this is just beyond anything that i've ever imagined somebody running for president of the united states would actually advocate. >> reporter: sanders continues to decry the presumption that clinton will be the nominee, saying it's not reflective of how well he is doing in the country's most populous state, as evidenced by the turnout in his speech and the concert in downtown l.a. last night. >> she is scarily, only five points. if the delegates at the democratic national convention want to make sure, and we better make sure that we defeat trump and defeat him badly, we are the campaign to do that. >> and we think we're going to
1:04 pm
come out of tuesday night with the delegates we need for her to be the first woman nominee on a major party ticket in the united states. so we're looking forward to that. >> so not a lot of unity between these two camps right now, martha. >> there sure isn't. as you mentioned, jennifer, in california, the latino vote demographically so important in that state. tell us about that. >> reporter: well, it's very important, martha. it's interesting to note that in puerto rico today, another primary taking place, there are 60 democratic electors at stake in puerto rico. democratic voters will be voting there. hillary clinton expects to do very well in puerto rico. she is only -- and this is notable -- 60 delegates short of the finish line after winning all seven of the virgin island delegates yesterday. there are nearly 15 million hispanics living in california. they make up nearly 40% of the
1:05 pm
population. 7 million are eligible to vote on tuesday. they are expected to make up 30% of the vote. if the 2008 primary is any indication. what's remarkable about these figures is hispanics made up just 11% of the vote during bill clinton's last election here in 1996. an example of how much power they now yield as a voting block. if clinton wins all of the puerto rican delegates, she may just cross the finish line before the new jersey vote on tuesday. the new jersey vote is where her campaign expects her to cross the finish line. that's why she will be leaving california and she will be heading back and will be in brooklyn on tuesday because what the campaign is hoping is that they'll have those three extra hours when the east coast polls close where she'll be able to declare victory and that might help her here in california where things are so very tight, martha. >> really stunning numbers. such a huge change in the last
1:06 pm
electoral term. >> an interesting twist too being on the east coast. clinton hoping a big win in california forces sanders to concede. might be easier said than done. the polling shows she's barely ahead in the golden state. this race right now is too close to call. chris direwalt is mr. sunday, sunday, sunday. good day to you. >> you got me all scrambled here, brother billy. it's sunday. it doesn't feel right. >> i know. but it's great to see you any time. >> good to see you. >> she wants him to concede. just by way of history, june 7th is the day she conceded eight years ago. is she going to get her wish? >> it depends. that's why they play the game. hillary clinton is going to claim the nomination in brooklyn after she wins new jersey. she's going to say i've done it. and she can rightly say that. whether or not there is patience and tolerance for bernie sanders
1:07 pm
to hang out in this race, there's the d.c. primary a week later. but really the issue is does he hold his delegates together to go to the convention and deny her the chance to win by acclimation, yea, yea, yea, or does he want to have the voice vote and go through the first thing? that's just symbolic. it doesn't change the outcome for bernie sanders. what it does change is whether democrats feel like they are a team and united and going forward together or not, and that depends on whether or not she can beat him in california. >> so what's the scenario if she loses? >> he stays. well, i won the biggest state. i'm sorry, i didn't mean to make that hand gesture. i got california. i'm not leaving. i'm going to stay in this race until we get to the convention and i make you say yeah, i didn't win, except for without super delegates and then he can complain about that. that's her reality. that's not what she wants. she wants to be able to turn and focus on trump. that's why if she wins, the pressure starts to mount on
1:08 pm
sanders. hey, you had your chance, you went as far as you could, it didn't happen for you. >> sanders was on cnn earlier today. i think part of what he was saying is that a lot can change between now and the end of july, which is the philadelphia convention. so win or lose, he's going to stay in. there does not seem to be an apparent reason for him to concede, right? >> well, there is an apparent reason for him to concede on the grounds of what can hillary clinton offer him to get out early? what can she promise him? the vice presidency? whatever. his leverage, interestingly, will never be as high as it will be after the seventh of june, and he could say i could concede right now, what will you give me? what he's counting on and what other democrats are thinking about is, what if something happens and she has to drop out? why should i drop out? but the answer for sanders is basically the same. trump's rivals haven't dropped out either. they just suspended their races.
1:09 pm
they're there. they could add water and reactivate. sanders can do the same thing. suspending my campaign. hillary clinton has gotten the better of us. and we wish her the best. and then still be ready just in case she loses the fbi primary. >> we'll see. they've had a lot of democrats register in the last two months. does that help sanders? does it help clinton? or can you say? >> we can't be sure. when we look at where the registrations are happening, we are seeing a lot of registrations from hispanic precincts, from hispanic counties, so we are seeing a surge in hispanic registration. is that due to this race, is that due to donald trump? we can't be sure. right now, it's a little bit of tea leaf reading. the number of votes, the amount of intensity on the democratic side, the republicans closed up shop sooner than we expected. the democrats are berning on. >> why is trump campaigning in california? why would he not spend this time in ohio or pennsylvania or florida? >> well, the real question is why wouldn't he take a break?
1:10 pm
>> what do you think? what's the motivation there? >> i don't know, but i'm going to guess he doesn't know what else to do. right now is the time where what you need to do is chill out. people are sick of you. no matter what, people are tired of it. what you have to do is lay back. put your team together. they're not ready for their convention. they're not ready for all of this stuff. this happened sooner than they thought. they need to get their team together. they need to figure out who they are and what the message is and quick going out and running in nonexistent races. >> sit possible he's trying to drive out turnout on tuesday that helps bernie sanders? that continues that race for a month and a half? >> if he's thinking in terms like that, he should get back to new york. he should huddle up with his team and he should take a chill pill, because that would not be worth the effort. >> well, we'll see you tomorrow, right? >> heck, yeah. >> tomorrow is monday. thank you, chris. good to see you. >> good to see you, brother. hillary clinton's e-mail controversy looming over tuesday's critical california
1:11 pm
primary. now she's trying to brush off the inspector general's report, which found that she did, in fact, violate state department rules by using a private server. clinton saying some other findings may actually work in her favor, she believes. >> i thought that the report actually made it clear that the practice i used was used by other secretaries. everybody in the department knew that i was e-mailing from a personal address. hundreds of people knew it. people around the government knew it. >> not going away, this one. clinton sidestepping a question about whether the fbi has reached out to her about the e-mail investigation. we're going to show you that exchange coming up in the next hour. in the meantime, donald trump saying that he will compromise with house speaker paul ryan, this after picking up ryan's endorsement, even if it was not exactly full-throated. today, donald trump responding saying that while they agree on many things, he can willing to work with the speaker to push aside and push forward their
1:12 pm
agendas. >> he's a good man. he wants good things for the country. we will agree on many things. we're not going to agree on all things, but we're going to agree on many thing. >> do you see -- implementing paul ryan's agenda? >> i can see a compromise. >> so trump adding one issue where he and his speaker do see eye to eye is how to battle poverty. it's been a big topic for speaker ryan the past couple of years. we are your election headquarters, and tuesday is a big night. final primary races in the presidential race, there were contests in california, as we mentioned. also new jersey. got a contest in new mexico, montana, and the dakotas. so we've got you covered when the results come in, tuesday primetime here on fox. >> it's going to be a big night. maybe a big night for hillary clinton. >> could. >> maybe a big night for bernie sanders. that's what everybody's going to tune in to find out the answer to on tuesday night. in the meantime, we want to step away from the race for a moment here to remember the late muhammad ali. a fighter, a champion, both in
1:13 pm
and out of the boxing ring. he passed away friday evening at the age of 74. fans from around the world gathering in his hometown of louisville, kentucky, to pay tribute to the man known as the greatest. >> he fought for all of us, whatever it is. >> muhammad ali has meant so much to this city. a great humanitarian. he's done so much for the world. and it's great to be able to come. >> so what's it like in the champ's hometown at this day? >> reporter: the only thing that seems to slow down the steady stream of people coming to the ali center to lay down flowers and pay their respects has been a couple of bouts of rain that came through yesterday. today we've seen the people coming from all over the world. a band formed up for a little while. all in honor of the sports icon and instrument for social

change. just a few miles away is the little pink house in which cassius clay was born and raised. it has now become a museum preserved in its modest form. the staff, some of them knew ali. all were inspired by him. >> a prophet has gone. he has finished his mission and gone on to do what he's supposed to do. he had a mission. he came here to do something. much bigger than boxing. >> he told us how to speak up for ourselves and stand up on your own. and don't hang on to the old bad stuff, but progression. >> reporter: funeral services are scheduled for friday. there will be a public memorial in an arena called the kfc young center. tickets will be limited and hard to get. >> and respect obviously still pouring in from all corners of the boxing world. >> reporter: lennox lewis is someone who really followed in
1:15 pm
ali's footsteps. he unified the heavyweight belt at one point. he spoke today about what an inspiration ali was to him. >> well, you know, he touched me many times. and i guess the first time was when you go to school, and the teacher says well, can you write down your heroes? and, you know, i wrote down muhammad ali. and, you know, when he passed, that's what i thought about. that he was basically my first hero. >> after winning the title, lewis said he had an opportunity to speak with muhammad ali. he said you're the greatest now. lennox lewis said there can only be one greatest. never give up that title. >> mike, thank you. i watched a documentary called "facing ali" yesterday, which was really great. i recommend it. and it was just all of these boxers who had faced him in the ring talking about the man and talking about his life, and what an incredible --
1:16 pm
>> you want to watch a great documentary with your kids, watch "when we were kings." really phenomenal. captured the personality of the man. i was at the opening games in atlanta in 1996 when he lit the flame. remarkable that he showed up, because it was a secret to the very end. but what i remember from that time even more so, two nights prior, the twa flight 800 went down, and it was two nights before the olympics started in america and the concern was about terrorism. and we had no idea what happened to this plane, exploding off the coast of long island the way it did. but ali came in 48 hours and sort of changed the national attention and direction, at least for a time. and then had the bomb in the park just about a week later. >> yeah. interesting times. it's going to be a lot of reflecting over this weekend. you're going to talk to evander holyfield. >> chris wallace had a great touch. he said you can debate whether or not he was the greatest, but you certainly cannot debate that he was not a giant among us physically and so many other ways. in the meantime, another
1:17 pm
tragic reminder on the dangers the men in blue face every day. a memphis police officer is killed in the line of duty under especially terrible circumstances. we will fill you in on that. and hillary clinton makes herself available for selfies during campaign events, but when it comes to taking questions from reporters, not so much. so how long can she keep that up? also donald trump taking a bit more heat for criticizing a judge over his mexican heritage. is that out of bounds? we'll debate it, fair and balanced in a moment here. >> i don't know the judge, but he's truly unfair in san diego. >> why did you refer to his ethnicity? >> because i want to build a wall. there's some people that don't like that. defiance is in our bones.

new arrest in the death of officer verdel smith last night, and also shooting three officers. officer smith was trying to clear a crime scene that was the result of a string of shootings. the suspect left the scene and returned and hit smith with his vehicle.
1:22 pm
he is now facing multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder. officer smith was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries. the 46-year-old officer was an 18-year vet of the memphis police department. a hillary clinton aide firing back over criticism on the lack of news con fleference. it has been 184 days since the last official press conference. her spokesperson saying clinton is still making sure to get lots of screen time. >> in terms of a definition of calling something an availability or press conference. the reality bottom line is she's answering questions from the reporters that are covering her day-to-day. >> how you doing, howie, and good sunday to you. he says no reluctance. have you found otherwise, sir? >> the national reporters who spend a lot of time following
1:23 pm
hillary clinton around the country tell me that she almost never takes questions from them. she does talk to local reporters. while brief availabilities are fine, the fact that hillary clinton hasn't held a full blown news conference this entire year is a statement. it's a statement that she wants to stay scripted. it's a statement that she doesn't want to be knocked off stride by confrontational questions. it's a statement that she doesn't really like engaging the press. except in carefully selected, carefully timed tv interviews. >> so far, it hasn't hurt her. or has it? >> i would argue that it has hurt her, for this reason. she has passed up many, many opportunities to make news by engaging the press. you don't need to talk to us because we're so lovable. it's an opportunity to use the megaphone. bernie talks to the press a lot more than hillary does. i think she conceded the battlefield to donald trump, and maybe reinforced the notion that she is an overly scripted and hypercautious candidate.
1:24 pm
>> so she would benefit in your view. but would that give reporters a chance to bang on about the server, and with an active investigation, you're concerned about every word you drop in an answer like that. >> sure, but look at all the controversies that trump gets involved in and he engages the press and pushes back. when you go a long stretch without doing an interview or holding a press conconference, the negative questions build up. the journalists feel compelled to go through the list or the e-mail. i think it lets the pressure valve off when you do it on a day-to-day basis. not every single day, obviously. i would argue that she has forfeited a great opportunity here. she may be starting to adjust. she called into a couple shows this past week. it's a trump tactic. >> you want to get the reps, right? you don't want to get rusty. does she ride this out? what would change her calculus, do you think?
1:25 pm
>> bernie sanders asides, sending every single he's not going to concede, it's pretty much a one-on-one race. if trump continues to do 15 interviews a week, and he talks to newspapers. he talked to "the new york times" while she was giving her speech attacking him. maybe they need to drop this caution, put her out there a little bit more. it's a little risky, but there's a payoff. >> topic two. what have you noticed in mainstream media since the riots on thursday night in california after that trump event? how has that been reported? >> it's been reported, but i am surprised it is not a bigger story. these protests with violence often attached to them, it's hardly a spontaneous outbreak. these people are organizing online. some of them may be bernie supporters. i don't think it's fair to say the democrats are behind this or something like that. i will say if you had organized groups using facebook and other social media to go to hillary clinton press conferences or
1:26 pm
events and speeches, i should say, and disrupt and sometimes engage in violence, i think it would be such a bigger story because there is this tendency in the media to say well, maybe trump kind of deserves it. he did say things a couple of months ago where he appeared to be egging this on, although he hasn't made those comments in quite a while. >> the trump protest a few months ago, that was blanket coverage, you could argue. has this been given the same, do you view? >> no, i don't think it has. maybe it was new and novel when he had to cancel that chicago event. it gets a lot of live coverage, because everybody on cable gets their pictures up. tension is building outside this or that trump rally, so there's that. but it seems to dissipate. i mean, we're getting more accustomed to it. i do wondering whether or not, because there is some hostility toward trump in the press, that's no secret, whether or not it is not a bigger story the way it undoubtedly would be if this kind of violent tactics, this kind of unacceptable violence were aimed at the democratic candidate. >> something for you to keep an

eye on. there he is. howard kearse, from washington today. bernie sanders is hoping for a golden opportunity, as he and hillary clinton get ready to square off in the california primary. she never expected this. this is a very tight race, and it's a delegate bonanza tuesday. >> also texas getting a chance to dry out, and they need this, too. storms dumped more than a foot of rain in some areas. hundreds of people fleeing for higher ground. still an issue in texas. >> they've kept this lake out of my yard is what they've done. it very easily could have been in my yard. thanks man.

1:33 pm
january. six points back in our poll in april. and now he's only two points back. >> what do you think is making the difference? what do you attribute his move to? >> well, if you look at the numbers in california, hillary clinton's image has gone down ten points over the last three months. i think sanders has done some damage. sanders' rating remains very hot. >> let's look at a couple more. this is voters under 30. across the board, when we looked at the exit polls for all of these states across the country, we saw numbers like that. voters under 30 he does immensely well with and she does terrible with. let's show the over 65 crowd. and this is holding up to be very much like what we've seen across the country in that area, with clinton under there at 56. and bernie sanders at 28 with the over 65 crowd.
1:34 pm
what do you think is the main thing that has driven her numbers down? is it the e-mail thing? what's the big story in california? >> again, i attribute it more to the sanders campaign than any wounding within the democratic party of attributable to the e-mails. what's interesting about the generational divide is that it crosses all types of ethnic and racial lines in california. hillary clinton was supposed to carry the latino vote by a big margin. you're seeing a huge generational divide within the latino vote. the younger latinos are going to bernie. so it's become a very close vote among the latinos and that was unexpected. >> it's so interesting to me, because i think what we're seeing here, perhaps, and you tell me what you think, is the typical identity issues that we've seen play out in prior elections. you know, the latino vote. the women's vote. seemed to matter less than this generational issue.
1:35 pm
you're seeing that to be true in california as well, it sounds like. >> no question. and we see it across both genders. hillary does better among women than men, there's no question. but when you subdivide the women in california by generation, bernie is winning two to one among the younger women. so it really is being driven by age, and therefore the turnout of the younger crowd, who are not usually regular voters, is going to be critical. if it becomes a big turnout, it's possible sanders could overtake her. if it the turnout is more typical or average, i think hillary wins. >> let's take a look at the head-to-heads in trump versus clinton and trump was sanders. she wins by 19 points, 53-34 in california. donald trump says he thinks he can win california. he's got his work cut out for him if those numbers are to be believed. but bernie sanders is ahead in a head-to-head with donald trump by 29 points.
1:36 pm
your thoughts? >> yeah, i think trump is smoking something if he thinks he's going to get close in california. this is a state that voted for barack obama twice by 23 points. so that is kind of the baseline that we would start out at. if he got close in the middle single digits, i think that would be a big surprise. i don't think it's ever going to get that close in california against trump. >> a whole different story, and we've seen a lot of new registrants to vote in california, which many people think is going to drive up the numbers for bernie sanders as well. mark, nice talking with you. thank you very much. >> sure, my pleasure. a fox news alert now, from ft. hood, texas. they've identified all nine of the soldiers who died in the flood waters during a training exercise. swift moving waters swept away their military vehicle. three soldiers did survive. but here is the list of casualties. meanwhile, the state is finally getting a break from the rain, but flooding is still a major issue. will carr is live outside of
1:37 pm
houston in an area where some mandatory evacuations have been issued there. how's it looking today, will? good day. >> reporter: hey there, bill. we're in brazoria county. to the north, the water has started going down, but here the water is going up, because the brazos river still hasn't crested yet. we popped on with a local resident here, d.j., very nice guy to let us tag along. you can see barns that are swarmed here with flood waters. i want you to move a little bit right. you can see this home just completely surrounded by water. we've seen home after home all along here. as we keep moving, you're going to see another home that's pretty much become an island out here. still some potentially dangerous situations. i want you to take a look at some of the video that we shot earlier. more homes that were flooded. we also saw a gas station that had water all around it. there's still a number of mandatory evacuations all across this area as the river waters
1:38 pm
continued to swell. so local authorities are saying this is still a very dangerous situation. take a listen. >> be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice. the flood is coming. we're continuing to tell people that. that they need to be ready. because the last thing we want is anybody to lose their life. >> reporter: and as you see, that home that looks more like an island, we can tell you to the north, the waters did go down. people starting to go back to their homes. the authorities have declared a federal disaster declaration that they will issue later this week, which should hopefully open the doors for some help from fema, bill. >> they need it. will carr there outside of houston, texas. remarkable images, too, just to watch that, thinking about how long it's going on. texas needs some help. let's hope they get some dry stuff real soon. in the meantime, donald trump is under fire for some comments about a judge in the trump university case. he is not feeling the heat, though.

good day to both of you. marjorie, i know you don't like this. i brand as a republican. do you? >> i do not. it makes it hard when he makes these factually baseless claims who tries a case in a court of law, not in a court of public opinion. for donald trump to attack a judge for his ethnicity when our country was founded, built and maintained by immigrants is not acceptable. >> he was arguing that the e case dismissed. and the judge allowed it to go forward. it seems to be the explanation that comes back to every time. roberto gonzalez wrote a piece this weekend and appeared on "fox & friends." listen to his take. >> i don't know, and again, it's perfectly legitimate to ask the question. and i think the judge, as every judge should do before every case, to consider all the facts, to consider the publicity about

the case, what's being said publicly about the case, and make a decision. again, it's not just about being impartial. it's about the appearance of impartiality. that's the standard that a judge must satisfy. >> so when i listen to his legal rationale, is trump trying to force the judge off the case? is that the strategy? >> or he's going on the defensive worried that he might lose, or that he's looking bad. the fact of the matter is trump keeps leading on race. he keeps leading on religion. he keeps leading on things that weren't an issue. most people didn't know that this judge had any kind of dissent or that he was anything other than an average american. and he is an average american. and i think that's the whole point. painting any population of people or religion or gender by one brush is wrong. it is un-american. because we americans look like many different people. so he's making it about race. and when he was asked if they were muslim, he made it about religion. so this is him.
1:47 pm
he is the one leading this. >> you're a lawyer, right? what's the legal strategy? is trump just playing the win on everything? >> i think trump is being a really bad client. i can't imagine his lawyers are happy with his statements, because they have to live by those statements and they have to report to the judge. look, if trump thinks this guy is not treating him fairly, there's a remedy. you petition -- in this case, i imagine it would be the administrative judge in that district for a recusal. but he's not doing that. and his lawyers don't seem to be doing that. so i think it's a really bad policy to fight your case and it's unfair to the judge and the system, to do it in the court of public opinion. >> let me get back to politics. newt gingrich said this this morning. kind of what you said, brad. watch. >> this is one of the worst mistakes trump has made. and i think it's inexcusable. he has every right to criticize a judge. and he has every right to say certain decisions aren't right. and his attorneys can file to move the venue from the judge.
1:48 pm
but first of all, this judge was born in indiana. he is an american. period. >> on the politics of this, i thought the point gingrich made later in that interview with chris wallace was especially pertinent. he said in the primary season, it's like playing golf, you're an individual. in the general election, you're playing a team sport. and so what he was saying is that trump has to let ryan know what he's up to. and give them the comfort they have to stand onstage without a surprise. what do you think about that, brad? >> i think the speaker is absolutely right. we're now engaged in multiple races. we're engaged in a presidential race. we have to hold the senate. we have to hold the house. we have local elections. and it's been said that a fish rocks from the head. that's true. if we don't have a leader at the top, it will hurt every down ballot. so we have to be united to win. we just can't count on our base. we have to reach out to others. the only way we'll do that is if
1:49 pm
we're unified. >> from a democratic perspective, marjorie, what do you think as you watch this now? >> well, i mean, i agree 100%. i think trump is doing a disservice to the party. he is doing a disservice to the american brand on the international stage. this is helping no one. i agree that there is a team element in terms of who do we want to be as a country and what are we comfortable with in terms of how we talk about people and how we talk about issues. >> marjorie, thanks. brad, thanks to you as well. >> thank you, bill. >> have a good sunday. iraqi forces are make some headway in the battle to retake fallujah from isis. even as terrorists cause more carnage near baghdad. also, hillary clinton drawing comparisons to president george w. bush. we'll tell you why. bernie sanders saying there is not much of a difference for their approach on foreign policy. what about that? we'll debate it in a moment.
