has people pretty much upset. we have seen a record number of primaries registering to vote for this election which is not normal for the primary. three quarters of those are eligible. there is a surge of registrants in the final weeks leading up to the deadline many registering as democrats. they want their say in the hotly contested race in california. take a look at the poll which was released ahead of the ap report which came out yesterday. clinton's two point lead was there. a win here is still hugely important. both have been campaigning heavily in california the final days. you might know the state is heavily democratic. today's big prize 475 pledged delegates. if you look at the tally hillary clinton way ahead. the sanders camp is ahead of all of this calling the report undemocratic because it may

how they play in all of this. california is a huge vote by male turnout. they don't even have precincts. you have to vote by mail. if it comes down to being a few thousand votes which potentially could be the case do we wait for all of those. how long we wait for all of those. >> it could be a long night. >> new jersey it is winner take all. it is in the polls in under an hour now. >> votes around gop candidate donald trump. >> the latest developments good morning. >> new jersey was robbed. that's what tony soprano might say. new jersey the primary vote here would be the vote that would take hillary clinton over the

>> i will start with you. what if sanders wins california, and why would it matter? >> it matters about momentum going into the convention. >> bernie sander ds changed the way we do politics and the way we raised millions of dollars. i would say -- spent my entire career trying to figure out how to raise money and get money to vote. who knew it would take a socialist democrat in the they need him and his money and supporters to make sure anybody is going to win in november. if he wins today he will show the democratic party he didn't listen to everything he has to say and supporters heading into the convention. >> ashley, what do you think? do you think sanders can win california? there's a two-point difference between them. >> i think it is close. california is very progressive. that is something that has played well to sander's advantage. there's also a lot of young people there which make up a large majority of his base. i think there's a strong argument for him that he could
2:07 am
come out on top tonight. again it is a big if. but at the same time i do agree with chuck in the sense that momentum has been on his side. look at the last few primaries. we have had a lot for clinton in west virginia and indiana and in oregon. and at the same time she only narrowly won in kentucky. he has been really wracking up these state wins making her look very weak going into this convention. if she isn't able to win she is been unable to win the largest state in the country and further send the democratic party into the war we have been seeing. >> do you think that would make any of the super delegates switch over to sanders? >> the thing that is interesting about the super delegates, a lot of them are elected officials. bernie sanders and hillary he is losing about 4-5 to her. the super delegates he's losing 12 to 1. if they are state or constituency has supported bernie sanders.
2:08 am
if they go to the convention if i am a bernie supporter i am calling into question what is your motivation who are you as a super duper delegate. i vote no count but yours days. >> that seems to be a big problem with a lot of voters. ashley 8 years ago today clinton conceded to obama and we know what happened next with mitt romney. you think hillary this time around is taking the trump attacks out of that romney play book from them? >> she is definitely going to try. but the problem here is that there's a lot of unity that is happening on the republican party, something that really wasn't expected when trump became the presumptive nominee. she can try to attack him all she wants but she is trying to fend off sanders in the meantime. she hasn't been able to locate all of her efforts on trump. she has been able to craft the narrative against crooked

kennedy. kennedy lost in the round he was winning in the end just like bernie sanders. in those days there was no super delegates. jimmy carter had a majority of the candidates. kennedy felt the delegates wanted them. they were feeling the bern for ted kennedy. the very first motion made at the democratic convention in 1980 was to unbind all of the delegates. kennedy was sure they would turn to him. it didn't happen. the rules were held jimmy carter was elected. it wasn't until then at the convention that kennedy suspended his campaign. a couple years later the democrats said we can't have this again. we meneed to make sure we never had another outsider like george mcgovern. they put in a system of super delegates. the irony is it was a challenge from the left by kennedy to put in the super delegates.
