12:00 pm
is the u.s. possibly ready for a two-woman ticket? well, you started weighing in right away. 79% of you -- it's actually grown now, say no. 21% say yes. that could be because of who the candidate is though. thanks for being part of the real story. i'm gretchen. here's shep. the primary battles in the books and today is the beginning of a general election unlike any this nation has ever seen. >> for the first time in our nation's history that a woman will be a major party nominee -- >> she certainly made history. and she's already signaling her tough strategy to take on donald trump. >> together we accomplish what nobody thought was absolutely possible. >> for his part donald trump is sticking to script, after a rough few days on the trail. today, the message he has for his republican critics. and then there's bernie sanders still refusing to budge. >> we continue the fight in the last primary in washington, d.c. >> but new today, signs from the
12:01 pm
sanders camp that the fight is all but over. and breaking right now, a shooting in tel aviv, israeli security services on scene, several casualties reporting. waiting for details and live pictures. so let's get to it. now, "shepard smith reporting" live from the fox news deck. that's over. first from the fox news deck this wednesday afternoon the general election is kicking into high gear with donald trump and hillary clinton hitting each other and hard. after claiming victory in primaries last night, they wasted no time previewing what's bound to be a brutal fight to november. >> we're going to be discussing all of the things that have taken place with the clintons. i think you're going to find very informative -- >> donald trump is temperamentally unfit to be president -- >> hillary clinton continued her attacks on donald trump's controversial positions. for his part trump gave a rare teleprompter speech, something he's criticized other
12:02 pm
politicians for doing. but sticking to script is a move for which establishment republicans have been begging. and unlike most of his speeches not one mention of building a wall or crooked hillary. instead he promised to go after secretary clinton in a separate speech next week. donald trump also told the crowd he's carrying the mantle of the republican party and will never let them down. analysts call it a message to republican party bosses who are really worried about his controversial statements. that's different than the message trump had last night for his republican critics. >> there's a lot of anger, i guess, anger. they just can't come back. they can't get over it. so they have to get over it ideally as to whether or not they endorse me, it's okay if they don't. but they have to get over it. they shouldn't be so angry for so long. >> trump says he's now through talking about the judge he claims is bias against him because of the judge's mexican heritage. but secretary clinton signalled she'll work to make sure people don't forget. >> it's clear that donald trump
12:03 pm
doesn't believe we are stronger together. he has abused his primary opponents and their families, attacked the press for asking tough questions, denigrated muslims and immigrants. >> secretary clinton aimed her speech not only toward fellow democrats but also toward republicans who refuse to support donald trump. as for any remaining threat from bernie sanders, fox news has now confirmed he plans to fire more than half his staff. the analysts say it's a likely sign his campaign is now winding down. politics 2016 is fox top story. jennifer griffin live with team clinton in brooklyn. let's begin with carl cameron on team trump live in washington. did we see the new trump? did we see a new moment of trump? what was that? >> there's no way to really know with trump because he does what he pleases when he does please. what happened we saw last night is what trump wanted to do, use a teleprompter and appeal to the party big wigs and particularly donors and show that he can wage
12:04 pm
a more conventional battle. and he does have the temperament and has the capacity to not meander and sometimes go off on a tangent and rail not just against democrats or clinton but also fellow republicans. you saw none of that last night. that was meant to say to donors particularly that he understands. that's a big deal. he's going to be meeting with state party chairs -- finance chairs from across the country just tomorrow in new york city. and there he'll try to talk to them and get them to participate in this joint fund raising agreement with our republican national committee because essentially in the last filing period trump had $3 million cash on hand compared to hillary clinton's $30 million. and that's just a pittance compared to what it's likely to cost. trump estimated it would be about $1 billion in order to win the presidency. that would be money he has to raise and he's now downsized that to say he doesn't need that much because he gets so much
12:05 pm
free public tv. >> carl kcameron, first we have more information in out of israel, specifically tel aviv and the sorona market. which is the center of tel aviv. these are pictures just come in. tel aviv of course six hours later than eastern time here in new york -- i should say seven times later now with summertime upon us, and these are the pictures from scene. we now know israeli security forces report this is a terror attack or suspected terror attack. at least nine people wounded in a shooting spree at a food and retail center right in the middle of central tel aviv. tel aviv as many of you probably know is rarely at least in recent memory the sign -- the location of these terror attacks. tel aviv as you can see here on the map obviously is a coastal town, a very big beach town, very popular this time of year. teeming with tourists along very high-rise buildings along a
12:06 pm
beautiful stretch of beach, there are coffee shops. in tel aviv if there's a war going on in the south in other areas of israel closer to the southern border, sometimes in tel aviv you walk around as if nothing has happened. well, terror has struck in tel aviv now. certainly the largest and most metropolitan city in the nation, at least nine people wounded, one of those said to be in critical condition. two wounded in serious condition. and the rest it sounds in israeli parliament they call it light wounds. in the united states that rou roughly translates to fair or stable condition. but nine people wounded. now, details of this, that's hard to get. mickey rosenfeld is tweeting about this saying that the shooting is in the area, they've cleared everyone but security personnel, it sounds like. police units have mobilized all around. the suspect is now in custody according to security personnel
12:07 pm
on scene. we've not been given any information about this suspect just yet. but we are getting some details, jerusalem post also speaking of this suggesting that very little information specifically about the person who is responsible. but i do know israeli forces had been on somewhat of a heightened alert in recent weeks. and this idea that they would be hit in tel aviv certainly we've seen it many, many times in the more distant past, but in recent months and years tel aviv at least in large part had not seen this sort of thing. but this happened right in the very heart of tel aviv. the latest information i've given you should anything more come in we'll get it to you. i'm confident that in the next few minutes we're going to be able to get information about whoever this suspect is what the motivations may have been, who
12:08 pm
the wounded are and how serious at least the one listed in critical. the shooting happened in just the past few minutes. security services now just after 10:00 at night, seven minutes past 10:00, said to have the area all cordoned off. but if you know anything about the area, you know that dinners happen very late. so 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 at night in the heart of tel aviv most likely on what is a nice night there lots of tourists and locals all about milling about, and in the middle of it all in a busy evening at least nine people are injured. israeli police now saying one suspected terrorist was shot near the scene and another was apprehended. now, this is new information. i have this from israeli channel 10 only. we have a fox news bureau there of course and multiple people on scene -- or in the city. but this information is coming to israeli channel 10 which i must say has proven to be a reliable source in incidence
12:09 pm
past. one suspected terrorist shot according to israeli 10 and another has been apprehended. israeli channel 10 is less specific saying several people were wounded. we know from security services that at least nine are wounded. all of them being treated, one life threatening condition i mentioned two serious and the others light wounds. eyewitness told radio that a flock of people fled the scene during the incident. and i'm now getting further reports in fact we now have it confirmed i24 news as well and others reporting that one suspect has been shot, another has been taken into custody. and i'm going through new information because it's coming in very quickly. the israeli police are now tweeting and they did just one minute ago captured one terrorist using their, shops and
12:10 pm
food mall evacuated. this is like i said right in the heart of a very busy area. here in early june we're really at the height of tourist season. a few weeks ago temperatures were up in the 90s range fahrenheit, and the beaches absolutely packed with people. they're having a very big tourist season this year and expected to have a very big tourist season all the way through. they go through what amounts to just about our labor day, august is an enormous travel weak and of course in the region. and all through september tel aviv is known as one of the hot spots really in all of that region. people come from far and wide and of course across israel for the gorgeous beaches there and what's become really terrific food and a great night life in israel and tel aviv the night life begins 11:00, 12:00 at night and goes well past sunrise in tel aviv. and it's a party. and that party has been erupted.
12:11 pm
this has enormous ramifications certainly for the families and victims and for civil unrest and the rest, those things are obvious. but this idea of a terror attack in tel aviv in the height of the tourist season is a very bad sign indeed because people start to second guess their plans and people start to make new plans and israel's economy of course doesn't need that. and certainly nobody needs the kind of thing we've seen tonight. details usually come in rather quickly from israeli security forces. and as i've told you in the last couple minutes we've gotten a lot there. there are teams of journalists now on scene. again, if you're just tuning in a terror attack according to israeli defense officials has happened in the heart of tel aviv on a busy wednesday night around the dinner hour locally there. it's 10:00 now, but that's dinner hour in tel aviv. seven people total to hospitals. nine people total injured, one
12:12 pm
critical, two very serious. an attacker has been shot. we do not know the attacker's condition. another attacker has been apprehended. and according to the locals witnesses who were on scene, a number of people fled the area as security forces were coming in. a terror attack in tel aviv. updates will continue throughout this hour as will politics coverage right after this. 12:15 pm
the scene. and you can see that the area is filled with security forces, some onlookers. the crime tape is up. tel aviv police and israeli defense forces are on scene. and we've just gotten a tweet from the idf, from the israeli defense forces, the idf spokesman, and i think we have that in vat two here on the news desk. breaking mass shooting attack at popular mar in heart of tel aviv, update to follow. and the update is nine people have been wounded, seven of them taken to hospitals. at least one critical, at least two serious. and in addition, one gunman has been shot. we don't know the gunman's condition as we did not before the commercial break. another gunman has been taken into custody. and these reports from the locals that a number of people fled the area as security forces were coming in, whether they were involved in any way is a matter for future reporting. but i can tell you that security forces are all over this area, this sort of food court mall
12:16 pm
type location has been shut down. traffic flow's been limited. they're doing a lot of questioning throughout the area, as you might imagine. if you've ever been unfortunate enough to be around an event in your hometown or some place you were visiting, you know police come in and they set up crime tape and there's a process and sometimes it goes on, you know, for many hours, sometimes days. well, when this happens in israel, it happens with lightning speed. they come in from all areas, many on motorcycles, as you can see here. the israeli defense forces on motorcycles. the medics on motorcycles. they come in, the crime tape goes up immediately, witnesses are interviewed immediately. the scene is processed. and in a matter of sometimes an hour or even, you know, slightly more than that the crime scene is removed and life returns. and this really began during israel's many troubles over the years with its neighbors and a series of terror attacks and a
12:17 pm
series of retaliations. each side will use different par lents but we're going with the what the israelis are calling it at the moment. the hope was they could make it feel at least to the degree possible that life continued, striking terror allowing people to be disrupted for hours on end, the israeli position was it changes the mindset and it's allowing the, quote, terrorists to win, unquote. further reports coming from israel. just got another tweet from the idf, several injured in the attack at least one critical which we've reported here. israeli's channel 10 according to footage from the scene an armed civilian shot one of the suspected perpetrators. this is new information. israeli channel 10 is reporting that not only was one of the perpetrators shot, but according to footage from the scene, an armed civilian shot at least one
12:18 pm
of the suspected perpetrators. think of this, israeli defense forces have been dealing with a shooting for less than 30 minutes. already cctv, closed circuit television, which is set up all over the city of tel aviv and certainly in other areas around down in jerusalem and other metropolitan areas, cctv is set up everywhere. there are cameras on just about everything. authorities are able to go in, access that video in realtime and search for people in realtime. so as they were doing that, they recognize a civilian shooting one of these people, an armed civilian shot one of the perpetrators, that's the report from israeli channel 10. a paramedic said they were treating nine wounded people, of them one with life threatening conditions, as i've reported here. two serious and six being treated for various conditions. in fact, couple of them were so lightly wounded they didn't even go to hospital. at least seven wounded were taken to nearby medical center.
12:19 pm
i told you an eyewitness reported that a number of people fled the scene. the newest information as i just said the newest information is this report that an armed civilian according to the reporting of israeli channel 10 shot one of the suspects on scene. and that was noticed through closed circuit television throughout the area. i'm watching pictures now that are coming in. we have a number of different feeds, this is the best one for our purposes for television. but jerusalem post is reporting only that several shot, the suspected terrorist was shot there. we initially thought it might be by the authorities but now it sounds like they were shot by one of the bystanders. and listen to this, jerusalem post is reporting the following, and i quote, and i'm quoting this because i don't have this, jerusalem post has this, and i quote, according to unconfirmed reports by police sources, two assailants had dressed up as ultraorthodox jews. so think of this. one shot.
12:20 pm
there's one who's in custody. two of the assailants reported to have been dressed up as orthodox jews. our reporter john huddy on the phone, he's one of our mideast correspondents and with us outside tel aviv now. john, anything further to add? >> reporter: well, we know, and we were just talking about how they may have been disguised, we're hearing that as well. we know two attackers opened fire in basically central tel aviv, or downtown tel aviv. this is a very popular area. there's a lot of bars, a lot of restaurants, obviously there's a lot of tourists there as well. we know that nine people were wounded, one we understand is in critical condition. now, obviously this happened not long ago, so there are a lot of different, you know, details that are coming out. we're still waiting on more contacts from police in order to try to pin down exactly the circumstances. but as you said, shepherd, two of the attackers they may have
12:21 pm
been disguised dressed up as ultra orthodox, but that's just according to some news reports. i want to be clear about that. again, we're trying to work our sources, but two attackers, nine wounded, one critically. central tel aviv, again, a very, very busy area. and of course this follows several terror attacks, not only last year. obviously we remember in september, october, there was a wave, a string of terrorist attacks including several in jerusalem, deadly ones as well. and then of course the most recent aside from attacks in the west bank and other parts of jerusalem. mostly stabbings, attempted stabbings on police, on soldiers, on border police. but of course there's the new year's day shooting in tel aviv where a gunman opened fire killing several people. >> hey, john, we've just gotten report in from israeli defense forces they may be believe there are explosives in the area, is that right, ryan? police are telling us that they are searching for explosives and
12:22 pm
are now clearing the area, which suggests to me that they may have reason to believe that there are. can i confirm that? no, i can tell you that police are telling us they're clearing the area now because they believe there's a danger of explosives. a quick commercial time-out and we're right back.

12:25 pm
breaking news now on fox news channel. at least one person now confirmed by israeli defense forces dead at what's being described as a terror attack in the heart of tel aviv. now 25 minutes past 10:00 in the evening on a beautiful night in israel in tel aviv, about 71 degrees. it had been a clear day, a clear night expected and the streets were teeming with people. this happened at the largest indoor retail market in all of the nation.
12:26 pm
according to -- let's see, the sorona market is 90,000 square feet with 91 shops of all varieties. back in april israeli police moved to close down this upscale market in the center of tel aviv. get this, over fears that the center was not sufficiently secure. even so the site's management said it would stay open. police asked the tel aviv municipality, in other words the local government, to revoke this market's business license arguing that lack security put the visiting public at risk. and now this. the national police spokesman has just said that two terrorists were stopped, one of them wounded and further, and i quote, tells the public to avoid the area because the possibility of explosives at the site has not been ruled out. upon reflection this is more common than unusual in that after one of these attacks one of the many things you have to do is make sure that they had left nothing behind, that there was nothing left behind to
12:27 pm
explode. so this appears to be acting in abundance of caution. you see some movement there in those live pictures that were up just a second ago. moving with a purpose. it could be that there was a suspect worth seeing or could be they were trying to get people to secure areas. i just can't know. now i'm told by israeli police the death toll has just risen. israeli police now confirm three people are dead in the attack in tel aviv. and some pictures i want to show you. these are pictures from the scene that have just come in. and our thanks for using them. ryan is back too, one of our information specialists bringing in stuff from all over the internet. this is one of the gunman. >> that's right. describes this as one of the gunman being strip searched by cops. you can see him on the ground. his ankles are cuffed. little blood appears to be on his shirt -- or see it --
12:28 pm
>> there was a weapon in sh shot as well? >> what appears to be a weapon on the bottom right here. >> in the inset there. >> we don't have a description on that just yet, but these are coming through as we speak. >> all right. jennifer griffin is a long-time middle east correspondent for us. she and her family, her children and husband lived in israel for many years. her husband with the "new york times." jennifer is a fox news correspondent, foreign correspondent. and, jennifer, right in the heart of tel aviv on a steamy night in june in the height of tourist season at the largest market in the country. i can't think of a much worse case scenario. >> reporter: well, it's interesting, shep. but when i heard the first reports come across, it took me back to that time in the second ent fatah where there were almost daily bombings inside jerusalem as well as tel aviv. but these attacks became somewhat unusual after israel built a wall between the west bank and israel.
12:29 pm
and that was a very controversial wall, but it did cause a drop in the suicide bombings, the armed attacks. and that's why you saw in jerusalem in recent months that attackers -- palestinian attackers in particular, had started resorting to using knives. so you kept hearing about stabbings in jerusalem, in east jerusalem. but this is somewhat unusual. it's interesting to note that in the last week alone the u.s. state department put out a warning for high scale -- upscale malls in africa, in south africa in particular, that they said could be the target of terror attacks because there was a sense that there was intelligence warnings that there could be copycat attacks to the famous highgate mall attack in kenya. so malls have long been a target for these kind of terror attacks, shepard. >> jennifer, thanks very much. so the death toll -- stay with us if you would. the death toll has now risen. israeli defense forces report
12:30 pm
three people are dead. we don't know if one of those is the suspect, but it's certainly a possibility because as is custom in israel in the early going of breaking news those injured, they're not separated by whether they're victim or perpetrator. it's noon-thirty on the west coast, 3:30 in the new york and 10:30 p.m. in tel aviv where a terror attack has happened flt according to israeli defense forces it happened just about 40 minutes ago smack dab in the heart of downtown tel aviv. at least nine people initially reported wounded. seven of those said to have gone to hospitals. now authorities have confirmed at least three of those have died. we've shown you pictures, still pictures from the scene. they were tweeted out by newspaper which reported to show the gunman along with the weapon on scene. and these are live pictures coming in from tel aviv now. we've just gotten our first video of this as it happened.
12:31 pm
and according to jo anna, another of our information specialists, this coming in from channel 1 in israel, this is a shooting of one of the suspects. >> yes, one of the journalists recorded this video the moment the police shot one of the terrorists. you don't see but this is shocking video nonetheless. >> rerack it and show again. >> go ahead, let's watch. [ gunfire ] >> this is apparently -- this is -- [ gunfire ] >> amateur video from scene obviously. this looks to me to be right in the same neighborhood if you play it one more time if you would. [ gunfire ] >> it would be an absolutely stunning thing to witness. think of the scene here.
12:32 pm
by their standards it's not very late at night. it's just after 10:00. lots of people in the streets even now after this event. police officer walking down the street and clearly shooting towards someone and someone screaming in the background. that from israel's channel 1 sent to us a short time ago. these pictures coming in as well. these are live now as authorities still haven't cleared the scene. according to the reporting of the israeli defense forces there are still concerns that there may be unexploded ordinates there. for bigger context, exactly what happened? well, and who might be responsible? there are multiple reports from multiple news organizations so fox news can't confirm that these two assailants were said by witnesses to be dressed as ultra orthodox jews. that would suggest that they're very well covered, would have been fairly well disguised. if we go back to the picture that was in ryan's bat, bat two of the suspect. these are the pictures.
12:33 pm
so if that is the case, it would appear that this might fit the bill. you see the black clothing around. that is not -- i can't say as a result of this that that is the case, but we're not going to knock down the reporting of witnesses who were on scene unless and until authorities tell us that that wasn't the case. at any rate that would have made you sort of blend in fairly well, maybe better in the heart of jerusalem than in the heart of tel aviv. nonetheless to see ultra orthodox jews around is obviously not uncommon there anymore than it would be in the neighborhood where fox news channel is in new york. would have been someone not noticeable in many ways. and then suddenly according to witnesses on scene it went from just a normal night at this massive 90,000-plus-square-foot indoor sort of food court area with 91 different shops, lots of tourists and locals milling about getting food and coffee
12:34 pm
and then just began firing. connor powell is another of our mideast correspondents based in jerusalem and live on the phone for us now. connor, what to add? >> reporter: yeah, shepard, there's obviously a lot of confusion about what's going on. what we do know at this point is at least three people have been killed during the shooting and we think there were two shooters, at least one of them may be in custody. another one was killed. this is an area that should be pointed out basically near israel's pentagon. this is a very popular area. there's a lot of restaurants and markets and shops. this is a place on a beautiful summer night like we have here in jerusalem and tel aviv, this is an area that is crowded at this hour, about 9:30, 10:00 p.m. or so at night. but also an area very close to the military establishment in israel. so this is an area that of course you might have soldiers, tourists, just local israelis hanging out. it is by sort of definition an area that you can conceive
12:35 pm
terrorists attacking. but we don't know what the motives are right now. we have seen a huge rash of palestinian violence in the last sort of nine months or so. but i think as you were pointing out it has really calmed down in the last two or three months, really since january. we had attacks in january, we had some bus bombing here in jerusalem that ended up being not a major attack fortunately, but for the most part the attacks that we saw all fall had really started to subside. so this really with the beautiful weather, the tourist season, the location and also with the city of attack this is a real shock, shepard. >> thanks very much, connor powell who's in jerusalem and our newsroom there. we've just gotten an update on the prime minister benjamin netanyahu. he was airborne in the air during this on travel and his plane landed in tel aviv at the main airport there 20, 25 minutes ago. immediately according to
12:36 pm
reporters who were traveling with went straight from the airport to the defense ministry for security consultations after this tel aviv shooting going to get an update. matters of this kind create a series of events. and it happens very quickly. in the same way that crime scenes are processed quickly. and cctv is checked quickly and suspects are sought quickly and areas are processed quickly. it all ends quickly. this happens just as quickly. there are defense measures that immediately go into place all across the country. especially in -- certainly in tel aviv, also in jerusalem and any area with large groups of people and certainly where different kinds of people mix. again, another report from hospitals three dead, it appears that the two critical and one other have die. we have not gotten an update on the suspect who was shot. is it possible that that suspect is one who died, it certainly is. but we can't confirm that.
12:37 pm
a photo journalist online with us with tps news service and on scene. tell us what you can? >> hi, i can tell you there are large forces of both mda, which is the medical services here in israel and police and army. they are scanning the area still they are very concerned there might be a bomb or anything else. they just want to make sure that everything is safe. there are very large forces, i can tell you something that you don't see every day. and it's a very, very vibrant, you know, place of fun here in tel aviv. a lot of tourists come here, a lot of locals come here and it's very, very upsetting to see this place, you know, looking like that as a crime scene with everything that's happened. >> here on the east coast of the united states i'm only reading, did not know already that there
12:38 pm
had been concerns as recently as april about security there. was that a news item of note at the time, or was it a footnote? >> you're talking about here in the compound? >> yes, apparently in april security forces suggested it should be closed because they were worried about security. the ownership said, no, we're going to keep it open. then they sought to force them to close and it didn't happen. >> yeah. i'm not a commentary but i can tell you it's a very complex situation. it's an open space, it's very beautiful. there are a lot of gardens, a lot of flowers, people sitting in the balconies outside. you know, it's tel aviv weather, it's beautiful most of the year. and the atmosphere is amazing. it's a very special place. so the idea to close it down is a compound you can't really -- that have to pass through security to get in. it's a very hard thing to grasp, i think, especially people living in the united states can't even imagine think about
12:39 pm
central park that you can't really set anywhere and security everywhere, it changes the place completely. so i'm sure after this happened now they would balance considerations differently. but it's very sad. >> yifat, i know security has increased many fold there in the area around the market. and that part of downtown tel aviv, do you have knowledge of whether the security forces make similar moves and other places into the outskirts of tel aviv and -- >> forces usually packs with a lot of people than they are security situations that are heavier, let's say, than other places. so tel aviv is obviously not the only place, there are other
12:40 pm
places. still come into play when it comes to where to put the forces and how many forces, et cetera. so just what i can tell you about that. >> yifat segal on scene. we know idf said one suspect said to be shot, do you know anything at this point? >> i can't tell you anymore than you said. >> tps news service on scene, yifat, we appreciate it. waiting to hear from police, just getting some background, a volunteer medic with one of the medical services there relayed to the scene of the attack, quote, when i arrived at the scene i saw a woman who was unconscious and not breathing and in critical condition. we began resuscitation efforts, we treated numerous other individuals who suffered gunshot wounds and wounds from shrapnel. another medic with the same agency said when i arrived at
12:41 pm
the scene i saw two young people suffering from gunshot wounds outside a restaurant outside the center, the name of that market. they treated them as numerous individuals who were suffering from shock, in other words shock is the common word for, you know, we saw something, we heard something, we were scared to death. those are also victims. quoting, while we were treating them other volunteers from the ambulance unit reported that they were treating an unconscious woman behind the sarona center and that she was critical. currently searching for and treating other people who were suffering from shock and who have been fed to nearby streets due to the incident. in other words, even if you were injured if only slightly you were pushed away from this area. a number of reasons, for fear there might be other assailants and also there might be explosive ordinates or something else on scene that could further hurt. we know by pattern after a terrorist attack so often if it's well enough coordinated, you know, from their
12:42 pm
perspective, you have gunmen at first, then when security forces come they're able to effect the security forces. that's always been one of the goals of who attack. so they're very mindful to get people away from where the security forces are going to be. tel aviv's mayor has just spoken from the hospital and saying the terrorist, he says, quote, fired indiscriminately. this hospital received nine, three apparently already have died, quoting, i want to send condolences to the families. that's from the mayor of tel aviv. he continues, quote, i'm asking the public to stay calm. tel aviv hoffa has been for years a target of terror that tries to disrupt our lives, we'll continue to live in the city and create and build. no terror will defeat us. we will seek peace, unquote. again, that from the mayor of tel aviv speaking from the
12:43 pm
hospit hospital. yasi franco is with us, deputy commander with jerusalem team, a team that responds to international mass casualty incidents. he's there inside israel and has team members in tel aviv. it's nice to talk to you. what can you tell me? >> well, coming up about an hour ago two terrorists dressed as orthodox jews according to some eyewitness report headed toward central tel aviv where they randomly opened fire in all directions. at this time we've just been given the update that there's been three murdered, one in critical condition and three seriously injured as well as a couple more more light to moderate. >> we just gotten word, yossi, this just come into us a bag was left behind, according to authorities, by one of the
12:44 pm
suspects. >> that is correct. that is correct. >> police inspecting it and still working the scene. two, possibly three more arrested, is that right? >> that is -- i mean, the bag has been confirmed as belonging to one of the terrorists. the security forces have asked all emergency personnel to, you know, keep an eye out. they are neutralizing this bag that they've found. there are other arrests that have been made including the terrorist currently in hospital in tel aviv. >> and we've just gotten word they did arrest two additional suspects. there was a third -- there was a search for a third suspect there around the market. but that third suspect search has been cut off. they believe that all of the suspects are now in custody. they're working the scene to make sure there's no unexploded
12:45 pm
ordinates. and this bag, though they are looking at it and trying to figure out what it is, we don't know yet whether it contained anything other than whatever supplies that suspect might have had with him. so the scene as it's been pointed out to us it's been a little more than an hour ago now. it was prior to 10:00 in the etching. it's frolic time. it's dinner time or pre dinner time for many people. this is the largest market of its kind in all of israel. lots of people around, tourists and locals alike. it's not a fortress as so many -- if you've been to the airport and dealt with security there, the professional security teams there, you know it's more extreme than anything here in the united states obviously. and it's much more extreme than it is at this particular center, according to everyone i've talked to who's been there. 91 different shops, everything you can imagine to eat and
12:46 pm
drink, and these two gentlemen, or these two males, according to the authorities, dressed as jews came and according to the mayor of tel aviv fired indiscriminately. there's one of the authorities there inside working the crime scene. you can see police weapons there. as it happens nine people were injured, seven at least taken to hospitals. now we know nine. three people now confirmed dead. one of those may be one of the gunmen. we haven't gotten specifics from the authorities yet. but we are expecting to hear from israeli defense forces in just a moment. and this is an update. breaking news just into fox news channel confirmed now four people have died in connection with this what israeli authorities are calling a terrorist attack right in the heart of tel aviv. a lot of things have already happened as a result. we've heard witnesses on scene tell us that security has been vastly upgraded. let's listen here.
12:47 pm
listen to the video. track the video. >> this is shooting of machine gun, not a gun. i look noise and i find [ inaudible ] the police come and that's what i see. it was a shooting, not shooting machine gun, wasn't one or twice, a lot of shooting. [ inaudible question ] >> what? >> so a local describing what he saw describing the weapon as a machine gun. now, as you might imagine a person walking up on a scene
12:48 pm
like this we assume he means there was an automatic weapon. we'll know specifics on that. and they are almost irrelevant at the moment as the suspects, according to israeli defense forces, are in custody. one suspect was shot, one suspect may have died. we don't yet know. there's no way to know. but a total of four people are dead. and i say that not by way of speculation but just by way of letting you know that's a possibility. here are the facts that we got, authorities initially reported that one person was very critical. when you hear very critical in israel, it often means that's a person on the way to the hospital where that person will be pronounced dead. two others were very serious, which suggests to us is it possible that those two people lost their lives? we hope not, but it's possible. and then we know a gunman was shot, according to authorities shot by -- according to witnesses shot by a civilian who was armed. but then we saw the video of what appeared to be a police officer slowly walking down a street and firing at someone.
12:49 pm
we don't know if that resulted in someone being hit or not. jennifer griffin is with us, long-time mideast correspondent for fox news with some context on the area. jennifer, you would imagine that a series of disruptions will now begin. >> reporter: shepard, i just have some breaking news from our wonderful reporter in the israeli -- in the jerusalem bureau on her way to the scene of the attack. and she tells me she spoke to security services not long ago. israeli security services. and they say that they know the identities of the two attackers. they are two palestinian cousins from hebron, from the yata area of hebron. they are the two attackers, at least one of them was shot on the scene. both have been neutralized according to security services. they were dressed according to eyewitnesses as orthodox jews. when they went into the crowded marketplace. but, again, this is coming in
12:50 pm
now from our producer in jerusalem who spoke to israeli security services that there were two -- that the two are tw the hebron area, palestinian cousins living there. shepa shepard? >> four people dead, prime minister off to visit with security ministers. what might we anticipate based on your security and knowledge there? >> one thing we know is happening right now is that the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu who just landed from moscow, a trip to moscow, landed in tel-a-viv, he's having a meter right now with the heads of security services at his office in tel-a-viv. that's just across the street from where this shooting occurred. the shooting occurred as mentioned not far from the israeli defense ministry. this is a crowded part of tel-a-viv. it's less than two miles from the u.s. embassy which is on the beachfront in tel-a-viv. we also know that the israeli
12:51 pm
chief of military intelligence was on the scene shortly after this attack on this crowded marketplace, shepard. >> jen testify, thanks a lot. we'll get back to you as events warrant. i know from experience, as jennifer certainly does, it's true, so the two attackers suspected to be two brothers, two palestinian brothers, dressed as orthodox jews. known well to security services as is often the case. and able to carry out this attack in central israel -- in central tel-a-viv. let's get to leot who is live with us on the scene. worked for the israeli project which puts out news to the foreign press there. leot, what can you add? >> hi. i'm here on the scene, i arrived fairly early. it's somewhat chaotic here. there are about 200 policemen and -- and paramedics and everything is kind of running wild around here. from what i understand, there
12:52 pm
are four people dead right now, and more critically injured. about three critically injured at this point and it is fairly chaotic. this is, i have to tell you, this is a very relaxed area in the center of tel-a-viv. there are shops and restaurants around here. children come to play. there's a playground right around here. this is very, very scary what's going on around here. >> i was reporting earlier there have been times when there are conflicts in the south around other areas where if you were to go from there to, for a weekend off as a journalist or anything else to tel-a-viv, you might go to this very area on a wednesday night for coffee and dinner and not realize there's a war raging in the south. it's that different. >> well, yes. tel-a-viv can be very relaxed in comparison to other places but we have suffered several attacks. i've been living here since i was born and i live very close
12:53 pm
to this area. unfortunately, we're not strangers to terrorist attacks. this was terrible. four people dead. more critically injured. i understand there was also a policeman injured while pursuing the terrorists. this is very, very sad. >> liat dolengiewicz on scene, works with the israel project, works to put news out of the foreign press. liat, we appreciate you. this news of the injured police officer is the sort of thing that here's what we believe happened. there's a pursuit under way. specifics, i don't have them, but in general terms, not shot, not attacked by anyone, but imagine the chaos of a scene like this on a busy night in a tourist friendly, family friendly area and you can trip and fall and hurt yourself in this sort of thing. i don't know the specifics. there are no reports that indicate any police officer was shot or in a conflict. tel-a-viv police chief just sent out word, there is no specific terror alert, there was no specific terror alert before this shooting.
12:54 pm
no information about any additional terrorists at large. the reason for this is so often israeli defense forces, the idf, gets word through intelligence that someone is planning something. when that happens, specific alerts go out. it's not like here in the united states where you hear there's an increased chance of something. if you see something, say something. be careful, watch your neighbors on the subway. it's not like that. it's very specific. sometimes they give details, sometimes they give areas of specific concern. and that sort of information is widely shared. there are apps for that sort of thing. and you're able to keep in touch with what idf and what the security forces know and how you should conduct yourself. prior to this terror attack, israeli defense forces and the tel-a-viv police chief specifically said there were no warnings. there was no alert. there was no sort of chatter that allowed them to know something might be brewing. this one caught everyone by surprise. a photojournalist, we spoke just
12:55 pm
a short time ago. i wonder if you know anything about these reports that a cop might have been hurt. >> yeah, i heard also a few rumors, nothing confirmed. but i heard something about that, yes. we have word now, yifat, this just came to me, i'm informing my audience. according to the idf, the terrorists reportedly ate at a restaurant at the sarona market before opening fire. i guess they were mingling about just sort of casing the place. >> this is something similar to what we saw in the previous shooting attack in tel-a-viv. we saw the terrorists just, you know, having fun in a supermarket near the area, just coming out of the supermarket and opening fire. it's something that you can't believe, but, yeah, it happened before. >> as is so often the case, we showed video earlier of, amateur
12:56 pm
video of what we believe to be a police officer shooting in the direction of a purported suspect. well now we have video that's come in that we believe to be of the actual incident, itself. this is from inside a restaurant, i'm told. what can you tell me -- other information specialists, show me what you got. >> this appears to be inside the restaurant in that area and you can see some investigators here moving around. lots of noise. we can see in some of the areas, there are some chairs knocked over. just kind of looks like a mess right now. >> so this is -- this gives you an idea of what the inside of this mall, not really a mall, it's an enormous food court where people come and go. there are shops. can shop well into the nighttime. well past midnight, i believe. and this is just sort of aftermath scene. back to yifat se trkt segal, photojournalist. do you have a sense they have
12:57 pm
things contained and beginning to restore order, yifat? >> the event as far as the security forces are concerned is over. now crime lab and, you know, they're trying to collect evidence from the scene, cleaning the scene and everything. other than that, the event is considered over. all the fears of a bomb or anything else are not -- there aren't any concerns anymore sfwlast good news. yifat, thank you. too our correspondent, conor powell in the jerusalem bureau. conor, i'm sure security will be increased and now an effort will -- maybe retaliate isn't the right word, but security action is probable, no? >> yes, shepard. i was just checking out sort of the area of jerusalem that we look over and you can tell that things are quiet, but there's no increased security. i'm not hearing sirens, anything here. so as you were saying, it does appear this appears to be limit
12:58 pm
to that area in tel-a-viv. there is no sort of high security alert in jerusalem at least as of right now. this does appear to be an attack that two individuals carried out in tel-a-vitel-a-viv. the police seem to have both the individuals in custody, one we understand has been shot. the situation seems to be cordoned off there. we're not seeing real increased activity here in jerusalem as well, at least for the situation, this isn't escalating either any further. >> conor powell with that important update from jerusalem. thank you. the mayor of tel-a-viv has made it to the hospital. and over the last ten minutes has been sending out information to us. i want to read some of them to you. this, again, is from the mayor of tel-a-viv. "it is an awful night for tel-a-viv. terrorists shot innocent civilians in a cafe with no distinction." meaning firing indiscriminately. wasn't as if there was a beef here. wasn't as if there was a specific motive against those people.
12:59 pm
just firing without incident. with no distinction. quoting, "we will continue to live in this city of tel-a-viv. we will continue to build, create and enjoy the city. terror ", says the question mar, "will not defeat us. "further "tomorrow we must go back to our normal lives, to our struggle for peace. the situation as we know it is as follows. two suspects in custody in tel-a-viv on a beautiful night. 91 different businesses inside. people having coffee and having dinner. around 9:30, 10:00 in the evening area, all of sudden, apparently for no reason, two, as we've been reporting, suspected palestinian brothers dressed as orthodox jews began firing indiscriminately. nine people were wounded initially. seven initially taken to hospitals.
1:00 pm
now we know four people have died. security has been increased. no terror alert in israel right now. what happened has happened. now benjamin netanyahu meets with leaders to decide what to do next. i'm shepard smith. your world with neil cavuto continues our coverage. policeman shot one of the terrorists, you don't see the terrorists on camera, but this is shocking video nonetheless. >> well, let's lee rarerack it show it again. let's watch. [ gunshots ] >> a market in tel-a-viv, israel, one of the busiest markets in the entire country attacked in a shooting spree. four people dead. security being beefed up in the area as we speak. hello, everyone, i'm in for neil cavuto. this is "your world." on the phone, fox in tel-a-viv with the latest. more detail in a moment. right now, jennifer
