tv Fox Report Sunday FOX News June 13, 2016 1:00am-2:01am PDT
1:00 am
it is monday, june 13th, and you are watching an early edition of fox news. and a bloody massacre shaking america to its core. >> the deadliest terror attack on american soil since 9/11. >> it was rapid fire. then changed ammunition, and then another change of ammunitions. >> all you hear is gunshots. >> i took my bandana off and tied it up and put it in the hole of his back.
1:01 am
>> i prayed for my life until the police came. >> the gunman killed in a shoot-out with police now identified as this man, 29-year-old omar mateen, and he was investigated by the fbi twice. >> we put a face to some of the victims, and 15 of them identified so far. >> we are live outside the killer's home. and we look at president's call for gun control. >> new information in the investigation, and leland, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we are now up to 21 of these victims identified. that means 29 families will wake up in the next couple of hours for the second day not knowing that their loved ones died.
1:02 am
behind me about 200 yards down orange avenue here, the fbi leading this investigation still onscene, and they turned the air-conditioning on full blast to try and preserve evidence there. we are looking at pictures to show how this all ended, and they had to use a large armored vehicle to ram into the vehicle to register the 30 or so hostages that mateen had cornered and held for three hours. >> that's one of the last things i saw when i went to the restaurant, and i went to the rest room and prayed for my
1:03 am
life. >> it started at 2:00 a.m. at the nightclub during gay pride month. there was an exchange of fire and then there was a hostage situation, and mateen called 911 and was claiming allegiance to isis during those phone calls. >> this is an act of terrorism. >> reporter: it happened during the month of ramadan, where we know isis is having a lot of propaganda, and when they get to
1:04 am
heaven, as perverse as that may sound. back to you, ladies. >> there was a terror list released that included names in florida and new york. thank you, leland. brand-new details, mean tile, about the shooter, and the fbi confirming omar mateen was flagged by the fbi. >> we are outside of his home near ft. pierce where police have been scouring. have they found anything yet? >> good morning to all of you at home. i literally have just got on the ground, we're in ft. pierce and outside of the woodland

condominiums where omar mateen and his father lived in separate condominiums. law enforcement has been on the scene here and they are combing the residences of any evidence. omar bough teen's father, want to show you images of him, and he posted numerous of himself, and showing support for the taliban reportedly, switching between languages and fantasizing about being the president of afghanistan, and in one video saying he is even running for office and orders the arrest of numerous afghan political figures reportedly, and mateen also posted pictures of himself online, and his
1:06 am
father said the massacre had no political reason for him. >> if he was alive today, i would ask him one question, why did you do this? why? >> the ex-wife of omar mateen spoke with the media yesterday and called him mentally ill and would sometimes beat her up for not finishing the laundry quick enough and her family had to rescue her. >> the night they were there they had to pull me out of his arms, and i left all my belongings. >> and the atf confirms mateen was able to buy two weapons, a
1:07 am
rifle and handgun despite having been flagged by the fbi, and being interviewed two times and in 2014 being interviewed one time for possibly having ties to islamic terrorism. >> still so many questions remain. >> orlando bloodbath shaking up the race for the white house. >> and donald trump slamming hillary clinton and president obama for refusing to call it islamic extremist and instead blaming it on guns. >> the worst mass shooting in american history sending shock waves throughout the nation, and political leaders and presidential candidates are all responding to the tragedy. president obama calls the murder of 50 people and the wounding of 53 others at a popular gay
1:08 am
nightclub in orlando, an act of terror and hate. he said the nation must remain united in grief, and the president also taking this time to state his desire to do something about gun control. >> this massacre is therefore a further reminder of how easy it is for somebody to get their hands on a weapon that let's them shoot people on a school or house of worship and movie theater or nightclub, and we have to decide if that's the kind of country we want to be and to actively do nothing is a decision as well. >> donald trump in a statement criticized the president for his remarks stating president obama refused to say the words radical islam and for that reason alone he should step down. if hillary clinton after this attack still cannot say the two words radical islam, she should
1:09 am
get out of this race for the presidency. democratic presidential candidate, hillary clinton, called the attack an act of terror and hate and said something must be done to stop terror and the control of weapons stating we need to keep guns like the ones used last night out of the hands of terrorists or the other violent criminals, and this is the deadliest mass shooting in the united states. speaker of the house, paul ryan, took to twitter to condemn the attacks, and said it's horrifying to see so many lives cut short by such cowardice. we will hope for a swift recovery for the injured. and went on to say, we are a
1:10 am
nation at war with islamic terrorists, and the united states cannot back down in the face of terror and never will. >> thank you, kelly. could this sickening massacre have been prevented? that's the question everybody is asking and outrage growing over miss signs, the shooter was investigated by the fbi not once, but twice. thank you for coming in so early for us this morning. we keep talking about him being under investigation twice. questioned three times under investigation twice, and yet he was still able to go and purchase these weapons. >> i am definitely concerned he was able to go and get guns. sent out a tweet about my friend that can't get gun because he
1:11 am
takes zanax. i don't mean to scare people, but that happens a lot, they interview terror suspects and he doesn't get arrested because it's legal to be an extremists and hangout with extremist. >> and for people sitting at home hearing this again because we heard the same exact story and conversation following the boston bombing, and the older brother had been under investigation as well and the case closed. >> when you talk about prosecuting people or using more aggressive measures to conduct surveillance on people, immediately you will have organizations go after law enforcement and say they are stigmatizing the entire community, and law enforcement has their hands tied because they can know somebody is a bad
1:12 am
guy but if you can't prosecute them for that, what can you do? you can't keep them on 24/7 surveillance forever? >> how do you walk the fine line between maintaining rights and living here in a society in the united states and at the same time stopping things like this from happening again. >> the most critical thing will be to take care of it overseas. we need to have moderate muslim american leaders that challenge things like anti-gay sentiment across the muslim year and going beyond this specific attack and they have to go after people that say it's okay to kill gays by a shia-based government. >> what about referring to it as a hate crime but not connecting it to his religion? >> every act of islamic violence
1:13 am
is a hate crime, and that's just our language, and in the minds of the enemy, that's all one thing. >> thank you so much and we appreciate your insight as always. the time is almost 15 after the hour. obama faces outrage after the orlando massacre. >> this was an act of terror and hate. >> the president still refusing to blame radical islam. how can we defeat terrorism if we don't define what it is? the next guest talks about the answer that he says is the only way. [bassist] two late nights in tucson. blew an amp.but good nights. sure, music's why we do this, but it's still our business. we spend days booking gigs, then we've gotta put in the miles to get there. but it's not without its perks. like seeing our album sales go through the roof

friends." still refusing to blame radical islam. >> we know enough to say this was an act of terror and hate. we are still learning all the facts. this is an open investigation. we reached no definitive judgment on the precise motivations of the killer. the fbi is appropriately investigating this as an act of terrorism and i have directed that we must spare no effort to determine what if any inspiration or association this killer may have had with terrorist groups. >> if the left still will not define radical islam how can we expect to defeat terror? >> the founder and president of the american islamic forum for democracy. why is the president still
1:18 am
hesitant to call it what it is. >> he apieces the saudis and the qatari's and others that don't want us to treat islamist. we need an intervention against the muslim community to understand they need to get angry against political islam, and it's the hate and the homophobia and the free speech against "charlie hebdo," and this is not a surprise. we have to reform this and use that in our words but the president doesn't want to acknowledge muslims have to reform the ideology and he wants to push it aside it's not a problem and we continue this whack amole program.
1:19 am
>> if you see something say something for fear of being labeled a racist? >> absolutely. we saw it with ft. hood. and every time we see things they were posting on the internet, the san bernardino shooters were going to a school in pakistan online, and jihadi ideologies ignored and we cannot have a seat at the table as reformers if we do not acknowledge that the house of islam needs to repair and it's that time in history that america was when it defeated they rock raw see. they are creating these ideas and they fund it in countries like syria and they want free-thinking muslims to stay in their prisons or stay quiet in america and we can no longer do that and it's a sentence.
1:20 am
>> he was not willing to denounce it for what it was. what is the role of the muslim community here in america after something like this happens? >> i am glad you pointed it out. on one hand it's nice to hear him say please work with the fbi and et cetera, but come on, it's like the parents of an alcoholic that goes through driving through the streets and kills people and says we don't know how it happened. he needs to be angry and acknowledge, these imams are facilitating it and part of the problem and we need to reform it from the ground up. >> thank you for joining us. the time is 20 minutes after the top of the hour, inside the terror, horrifying accounts from eyewitnesses that watched as the massacre unfolded.
1:24 am
1:25 am
at pulse. we hid in a bathroom and can't find our friends. one mom woke up to a text. >> i am in the bathroom. he's coupling i'm going to die. i asked him, was he hurt. he said yes. and are some of the people hurt? he said, yes. i asked what bathroom are you hurt? he said, hurry, he's in the bathroom with us. >> her son did not make it out alive, eddie justice among the victims. >> so far we know the names of 21 of them and 11 of them pictured here. >> friends and families still missing. friends and family anxiously await. >> it's just sickening.
1:26 am
i couldn't imagine -- a lot of my friends are missing their significant others, you know, and just the stuff they are sharing, you know, i am at a loss for words right now. >> florida health officials making an urgent call for blood donations because many willing donors are being turned away because they have banned gay men from donating blood. what is the u.s. doing to prevent another attack? why our next guest said florida is the perfect target.
1:30 am
we are back now with a fox news alert. terror in orlando. a bloody nightclub massacre shaking america to its core. >> 50 people dead and 53 more injured in the worst mass shooting in u.s. history and the deadliest terror attack on u.s. soil since 9/11. >> bullets were firing. >> rapid fire, and then he would change and then change another ammunition. >> all you hear is gunshots. all you hear is gunshots. >> the person i was with was shot in the back and i took my bandana off and tied it up and put it in the hole in his back. >> when i went to the rest room
1:31 am
i prayed for my life for the police to come and save us. >> the man killed in a shoot-out with police, omar mateen, investigated by the fbi twice in the past. >> breaking details still unfolding this morning as we are just now beginning to put a face to some of the victims, 21 identified so far. >> we have fox news team coverage this morning live from florida. our anna digging deeper into the terrorists ties. >> we have more on the deadly massacre. leland? >> reporter: ladies, good morning, as the investigation continues as does the agony of these families. 21 of these victims have been id'd, and that means there are 29 families, waking up to learn
1:32 am
their loved ones died behind me at the nightclub. we are getting pictures inside the pulse nightclub that showed you the intensity of the gunfire that would end up being a s.w.a.t. team and omar mateen eventually ending at about 5:00 in the morning, as police use an armored vehicle to ram through the walls and rescue about 30 hostages who were inside that nightclub being held for about three hours. >> he would fire, and then change another ammunition, and then change another ammunition, and i could smell the ammo in the air. >> omar mateen came to the club ready for a gun battle and it started just as he arrived at 2:00 a.m., and there was a shoot-out at the club and then mateen moved inside and
1:33 am
continued on his rampage. during the three-hour hostage ordeal, there were a number of 911 calls, some out from victims begging and pleading for help but mateen himself called 911 and was pledging allegiance to isis but it's unclear if his attack on the nightclub was ire isis. >> this is clearly an act of terrorism. it's sickening. should make every american angry. >> this comes during the month of ramadan where isis has promised its followers and jihadistss extra rewards in heaven if they carry out an attack during this month, as per verse as that may sound.
1:34 am
the fbi is combing through his phones and social media accounts and who he has had communications with. back to you. >> we will check back with you. thank you. brand-new details unfolding at this hour about the shooter himself. the fbi confirming omar mateen was interviewed three times in two separate investigations. >> his ex-wife and former coworkers now revealing many missed warning signs. and we go outside his home live, and this is an investigation that is ongoing. have they found anything yet? >> this is what i can tell you, about 120 miles southeast of orlando, in ft. pierce where omar mateen owned a home here and it's a woodland condominiums and his father lives in this part of florida and both homes have been searched by multiple agencies, and because of threats of possible bombs and bobby
1:35 am
traps, residents had been evacuat evacuated. there was a press conference saying they could go back in and most residents were opting not to do so. we will show you bizarre videos of his father showing support of the taliban and twitching languages and fantasizing about being the president of afghanistan, and in one video he is seen announcing he is running for office and then orders the arrest of political afghan figures, and then standing next to american lawmakers, and his father claims this massacre has nothing to do with religion, but he noticed his son getting angry about seeing gay men kiss each other.
1:36 am
apparently we don't have that sound bite for you, but he mentioned him getting upset because it was in front of his son and it was something that made him go flying off the handle. mateen's ex-wife spoke with the media yesterday and called him disturbed and mentally ill, and she also said that he would beat her up for pretty much no reason if he would come home and the laundry was not done. >> once after we were married i saw his instability and he was bipolar and would get out of nowhere and that's when i started to worry about my safety and then after a few months he started to beat me physically, very often, and not allowing me to speak to my family and keeping me hostage from them. >> the atf confirms mateen was able to buy two guns in the days
1:37 am
leading up to the massacre at the pulse nightclub there in orlando, and he was able to buy a long gun and handgun this after being flagged by the fbi in the past, and being interviewed once in 2013 and once in 2014 for being potentially tied to islamic extremism. >> a lot of warning signs. thank you. in the wake of the terror attack, what steps are we taking in the u.s. to track down jihadis and another tragedy from having. >> we are joined now. thank you for kwroeujoining us morning. you mentioned florida specifically is a target. why? >> especially this area of florida in orlando, where we have all the major amusement
1:38 am
parks and the disney parks and their entertainment centers and universal and their entertainment centers, and they are targets and that explains why what some might describe to be a secondary target like the pulse nightclub was chosen for this particular attack. >> you think about even a year ago, and many people were not thinking twice about go into a cafe or sporting event, and go into a nightclub now, we have taken events that have taken place, and this is a new reality. how do we protect from soft targets when it seems like walking out on the open street is now a target. >> it's tough and people are going to see the immediate impact here. the businesses of this area, businesses elsewhere, nobody really knows whether or not they
1:39 am
are on the sort of secondary target list. you are going to see an immediate impact in this area on the security of some of the venues and for consumers and people who are coming here on vacation and using some of these spots, it's going to affect the economy and it's going to affect their wallets, security is very expensive. >> what about the terrorists relationships with his family as well? we heard the father speak out and say, you know, this was a direct result of his son seeing two gay men kiss each other a couple months ago although, as we just mentioned, he was under investigation at least twice in 2013 and 2014. how would a relationship with the different families work into the investigation moving forward? >> i think right now interviewing each of these family members, some of whom are personally embarrassed and some who are nervous about the nature of the first investigations, and
1:40 am
the first several days the bits and pieces we get are going to be sketchy, and i think as the investigation continues and more facts come to light, we're probably going to learn that this sort of excuse that the father gave that the son was upset over homosexual activity in miami as his motivation, that's going to wash. >> do you think it was a failure by the fbi? we talked now about how they did look into him face-to-face, two, maybe even three times and then let him go, and we are talking about the number of warning signs leading up to this, and do you think this was a failure by the fbi or is it becoming too different to track down these lone wolfs? >> in a way it's a failure by law enforcement and on the other hand, you know, these fbi agents are under tremendous internal pressure to not appear in any way biassed, bigoted or
1:41 am
insensitive to the fact that they are dealing with a very sensitive racial and religious issue here. people can say what they want, and people can express different things in open media, in publicly available forum, and that doesn't mean they broke the law. i would think the fbi would argue technically what they did in this case was correct, unfortunately. >> nobody wants to place blame after the fact because clearly the person responsible for this is the terrorist himself, omar mateen. it's 20 minutes until the top of the hour and the presidential candidates weighing in on the orlando massacre. >> and donald trump doubling down on his temporary ban on muslims and why our next guest, a muslim himself, agrees with donald trump.
1:45 am
donald trump reacting to the attacks in orlando by doubling down on his temporary ban on muslims entering the united states. he said we will have no way to screen them or pay for them or prevent the second generation from radicalizing. >> is the presumptive nominee going too far. our next guest doesn't think so and he is a terror expert. thank you for being with us. we appreciate it. >> good morning. for the record, i am an american. >> so donald trump doubling down from his muslim ban. you have a number of americans saying this is going too far and
1:46 am
this might only complicate matters going forward and you stand by him and say this is what needs to happen. why? >> because we are going to make and we need our safety first, and our safety, our government must do what is necessary to protect us. anybody who is coming from overseas, especially from the middle middle east today and terrorists might slip through, and we need to vet them out and even the next encounter between saudi arabia and the gulf states, they are vetting people come into their country from syria or iraq, and why can't we vet them coming over here to the united states? that's why we support the nominee, donald trump, because he is going to take a severe action to protect us and as a person from orlando, we don't want to see another situation to
1:47 am
see what happened elsewhere in our states. >> you agree with his idea to build a wall? >> of course. again, you have a lot of refugees and a lot of immigrants come illegally to the border on mexico and no patrol can catch them all, and therefore we need to build a wall and we need to let the people come legally into the wall, like the big border he will build. >> we are in the middle of a race for the white house and different perspectives on how you respond to an act of terrorism as we saw yesterday. how do you think it would be different under a trump administration? what would he do differently than what we see playing out with the obama administration? >> what i believe mr. president obama for the last seven or eight years and especially for
1:48 am
last four or five years, he did not go after isis the way he should have. him and mrs. clinton, they want to contain isis, and the containment of isis is going to keep spreading and committing atrocities and crimes throughout the war like what we saw in europe and like we have been seeing here in the united states, so -- also, furthermore, president obama back in 2013, he took out any references towards islamic terrorism from the fbi training books, and therefore that's what happened when the fbi went after this terrorists guy who committed atrocities here in orlando, the fbi closed the case because they could not use islamic terrorism any longer by the fbi manuel and they closed that in the 2013 and 2014 after the ban by president
1:49 am
obama. >> he also had apparently been connected to the first american who was a suicide bomber in syria. i do want to ask you about people who are calling this a hate crime. we have heard that from president obama and we heard that from other politicians, a lot of people and also from the group known as c.a.r.e. >> i believe c.a.r.e. wants to divert the real attention from the islamic terrorism to hate crimes and they want to confuse the public and the intelligence services like the fbi and law enforcement and that's a problem itself. c.a.r.e. is promoting to be a hate crime and our intelligence services don't dig deeper into terrorism activities from the middle east and throughout the world. >> thank you for being with us this morning and for your insight. we appreciate it. the time is almost 10
1:50 am
1:55 am
we are back with our continuing coverage of the terror in orlando. 50 people killed and 53 hurt in a massacre at a nightclub, the worst mass shooting ever in the u.s. >> investigators now scrambling to figure out how an attack of this scale could happen on american soil. >> and our guest joins us live from orlando with the latest on the investigation. good morning. >> i stand in the middle of orange avenue this morning down a few blocks is the scene, the pulse nightclub scene, where now more than 24 hours ago this unfolded. we are about three hours away from a briefing not to reporters, but to perhaps more importantly to the family members of those inside the nightclub, many of whom at this hour, 24 hours later, have no idea whether their loved one is alive and in the hospital or dead. a short list of those names of
1:56 am
those 50 dead have been released. we know considerably more about the shooter in this case, omar saddiqui mateen. he claimed ahrllegiance to isis and isis for its part claimed responsibility for the attack but much more important perhaps is whether or not they had connection from mr. mateen before the attack and if they assisted in any way, that is unclear at this hour. and the other information we have is information from his ex-wife, they had a very short marriage and his ex-wife says she left him because she believed he was mentally ill perhaps with bipolar disorder. fbi with the latest on what they
1:57 am
confirmed thus far about the investigation, listen. >> it had been reported that mateen made calls to 911 this morning in which he stated his allegianced to leader of the islamic state, and we are looking at all connections, domestic and international. >> somebody inside, witnesses inside overheard mateen on his cell phone saying there was more than one shooter and he was not it, and we should report that they are not looking for any accomplices. we are hearing extraordinary stories, they buried themselves under dead bodies to pretend they were dead to avoid being shot themselves.
1:58 am
>> people just started to run and scream. >> an extraordinary story and scene that will continue to play out, i think, over the next several days, weeks and months. >> a lot of heavy hearts waking up this morning. live from orlando, jeff, thank you. >> thanks. it's monday, june 13th and you are watching "fox and friends first," and this is a fox news alert. terror in orlando, a bloody massacre shaking america to its core. >> 50 are dead and 53 more injured in the worst mass shooting in u.s. history and the deadliest terrorists attacks on american soil since 9/11. >> he would change the ammunition. >> all you hear is gunshots.
1:59 am
all you hear is gunshots. >> the person i was with, shot in the back and i had to take my bandana off and put it in the bullet hole in his back. >> i prayed for my life until the police came to save us. >> the gunman killed in a shoot-out with police now identified as this man, 29-year-old omar mateen. he pledged his allegiance to isis and was investigated by the fbi twice in the past. >> the breaking details unfolding at this hour as we put a face to some of the victims, just 21 of them identified so far. we have fox news team coverage for you this morning, and we are live outside the suspects' home. >> we begin with leland steps from the nightclub with new information on the investigation. leland? >> reporter: ladies, 26 hours now after the first shots rang out, this investigation
2:00 am
continues behind me literally hundreds of law enforcement officials, the fbi in the lead, the atf here as well, and florida department of law enforcement and the florida highway patrol and the police police department here combing through the pulse nightclub and we are told they are still bodies inside the nightclub 200 or 300 yards down the road now and 29 families are now waking up for a second day not knowing where their for a second day no knowing where their loved ones are and have not been told yet their loved ones did not make it out alive. we are getting the first pictures from outside of a nightclub showing how fierce this gun battle was it ended at 9:00 a.m. as a swat team rammed through a nightclub to rescue some 30 hostages who had been held for three hours. >> bullets flying the people on the
