i think that was a big part of the messaging here. when i was there in may i had the opportunity to sit down in a meeting with the turkish defense minister. he sited grave, grave concerns about terrorist threats just like this coming from isis. >> what about in terms of turkey specifically? there's a shared border with syria. a renewed relationship with russia as well. >> do you think it was a as a result of some of the renewed relationships? >> it was a combination of factors that made this so right for some of the big statement attacks. one of those is the fact that they have been active in the anti isis campaign spelling isis positions in syria as we speak. another one of those being the fact that among other middle eastern countries turkey has got

a secular government. they follow a constitution so they are predominantly muslim. isis resents the fact that they follow democratic governance. >> we haven't heard from obama administration. we heard from hillary clinton and donald trump. what is your response to what we have been hearing and we haven't heard yet from the obama administration? >> what needs to be done to combat isis at this point is the continuation of the fight on the ground whether this is fought on the ground or from the air in the heart of the caliphate. as long as we can keep denying them territory all claims to statehood they may make become illegitimate. other parts of the battle is ideological. it is harder to come up with ways to fight the ooed yolg head on whether it is the social media campaigning, whether it is

ataturk international airport during that time. it is a very secure airport. you have to go through security check right as you walk into the departures terminal. image before you even step up to the ticket counter to get your airline ticket you have to go through an x-ray machine and put your bags through a metal detector screening as well. it is very secure from that standpoint or rat least at lea it felt up until yesterday. it is one of the most modern airports i have traveled in overseas. it has a huge duty free store. >> was this a consequence of turkey's restored relationship

stepping up security after the deadly terror attack in istanbul. we are live at jfk airport in new york. theresa, you are at one of the other busiest airports in the world. what is it like there? >> reporter: good morning, guys. good morning, everyone. here at the airport it is business as usual. according to port authority they have stepped up the patrol. they tell us they have deployed officers in high tactical gear. they have counter terrorism officers on stand by. they have increased the police presence especially at terminal one which is the terminal that services turkish airlines at this airport. it is quite difficult to put out of your mind the images we're seeing in istanbul. certainly for these people flying out of the airport, they can relate to those people flying in. they're doing the same thing that passengers are doing here.

as far as flights are concerned, there are three flights in and out today to turkey. yesterday the faa halted flights to turkey but that has resumed. istanbul is quite a popular destination to tourists. 800,000 americans visited turkey in 2015. it's gaining in popularity. this is something that is certainly concerning to everybody here, especially during the summer months where europe is a popular destination. it is the 11th busiest airport in the world and as i mentioned highly serviced by american tourists. we'll wait to see what happens here. flyers are simply going about their business and they do feel much more protected in the wake of the attack because of the police presence that they are seeing. that's the latest from jfk airport this morning. i'll send things back to you guys in the studio. >> torr residential -- theresa
