tv   Fox and Friends First  FOX News  July 8, 2016 2:00am-3:01am PDT

2:00 am
. >> all we have is this dark collector -- >> unidentified male wearing a green vest. >> body armor. >> a fox news alert for you, of blood is dead. the suspect taking his own life just moments ago after barricading himself and negotiating with police for hours. >> this coming after a tragic night in texas. five police officers murdered by snipers during a protest. at least six others are wounded. (sirens) >> people running for their lives through the streets when the protest exploded into chaos and gunfire. >> two snipers opening fire from parking garages. officials believe they wanted to kill as many police officers as possible. >> for the first time we are seeing the face of one of those fallen cops.
2:01 am
43-year-old officer brent thompson. >> he is just one of the five officers who have been killed. 11 shot in total. three people in police custody at this hour. a fourth suspect is dead, killed by his own gunfire. >> and we have fox news team coverage this morning. let's get right to casey live in dallas. any updates for us at this time? >> i want to reiterate what we have learned about this officer, the very first name and the face that has emerged from this horrific tragedy overnight. according to dallas area rapid transit or dart as it is known in dallas, 43-year-old brent thompson was among one of the five officers killed tonight. it was a mixture of officers from dallas area rapid transit and dallas police department who were injured tonight and among
2:02 am
those who were also killed. brett thompson had been on the force since 2009. this is the first officer in the line of duty for dart who has been killed. as we speak dallas swat officers are wrapping up the scene of the tense stand jf where one of the suspects held himself up in a parking garage for hours firing at police, exchanging gunfire. police say the person had warned other officers whob injured and he placed bombs around downtown dallas. but fortunately that has been unfounded. >> the shooting spree broke out around 8:45 last night as protestors were wrapping up their event in downtown dallas. 11 officers both with the dallas police and dart were hit. five have since died. others are critical and in
2:03 am
surgery. now eyewitnesss describe the pandemonium as people literally scattered in every direction, not knowing where the shots were coming from. >> i just saw a cop bending over, man. (indiscernible n (indiscernible) it was right after the rally. >> then there is this, video put out by the associated press which shows a man with a rifle hiding behind a concrete pillar and shooting. police characterized this as a sniper style attack. it is believed the man in this video in this parking garage is the suspect who took his own life. three other suspects in custody at this hour. a woman and two men who are being questioned by dallas police as we speak. ladies? >> casey, we had talked about through the night that some of
2:04 am
the suspects were taken into custody in a mercedes. when we heard the audio playing just recently that we got the new audio of the call to dispatcher 911, they were saying that it was a gold vehicle that had a rifle out. have you heard if that mercedes and the gold vehicle one in the same? >> the gold suv? >> yeah, unfortunately we don't know. we don't have the answer to that right now. there is a lot of information that is flying around at this point and we are trying to sort through everything to make sure that we are getting the most accurate information on the air, obviously. but, you know, it's unclear if that is the vehicle in particular where those two people were arrested from. basically what happened is the police noticed that two men put a camouflage bag in the trunk of this mercedes benz, whether it was an suv or a sedan, again, we do not know.
2:05 am
it caught the police officer's eye and then the mercedes sped away, according to the police. those were their own words. they followed and made the stop and pulled him over just south of downtown dallas and took those two people into custody. again what they found, they have executed a search warrant to find out what was in the camouflage bag in the first place all of that is unclear and still remains to be seen. >> what about the individuals who remain hospitalized, what do we know about the officers and there is a report a civilian was injured and also the same 911 calls referenced a female being down. >> again genders we don't know. that is something the police have not come out and said. dallas police department has not really said any information about their wounded officers. brett thompson is the dart officer who lost his life tonight. that is a different agency.
2:06 am
obviously dallas area rapid transit has already released the identity meaning they made contact with his family and broke this tragic news to them. as far as those fighting for their lives at this hour, doctors we know have taken some into surgery. some of the officers were critical. the update that came to us was before the death stole had gone -- death toll had gone to 5. the officers who are still critical, officers in surgery, the types of sounds, things of that nature, we don't know. police and representatives at park land their attention at this moment is trying to save and stabilize these remaining officers who are in the hospital. right now talking to the press and releasing a whole lot of
2:07 am
information is at the top of their minds. we understand that. >> they had mentioned both the mayor and chief of police brown that we probably wouldn't hear from them until quite further into the morning, because as you mentioned, there is a lot to be done. >> casey stegall live, thank you. we will be checking back in with you. >> president obama is scheduled to speak in poland. >> yesterday he fuelled the nationwide attention following two fatal police involved shootings in minnesota and louisiana calling it quote an american problem. >> garrett tenney is live for us in washington, d.c. with more on the nation's reaction. garrett? >> heather and patricia, both of the police shootings were caught on amara camera. the videos went viral sparking the protests across the country. they have launched a civil rights investigation which it
2:08 am
can place in baton rouge, louisiana. two police officers was called by anonymous callers who say they were threatened by a gun outside of a convenience store. you see them taking down sterling before fatally shooting him. sterling had a gun on him at the time, but not clear in the video that the police were aware of that or that he was reaching for it at the time that he was shot. they are also monitoring the investigation into the second shooting which came a day later on wednesday outside st. paul, men minute p. 32-year-old castillo was shot by police after being pulled over. his girlfriend and daughter were in the car with him at the time. his girlfriend recorded video on her cell phone the entire incident including the aftermath showing castillo slumped over and covered in blood. yesterday at a vigil in st. paul the governor said while we don't know the facts no one should be shot and killed for their
2:09 am
taillight being out. >> if those passengers, the driver and damage were white i don't think it would have. i am forced to confront i think all of us are forced to confront this kind of thing doesn't exist. we vow we are going to do whatever we can to see what this doesn't happen and doesn't continue to happen. >> protests sprang occupy from dallas to new york city, los angeles, chicago, atlanta, seattle and here in washington, d.c. last night president obama also weighed in on the shootings and said this is an issue that should trouble the entire country. >> this is not just a black issue. it is not just a hispanic issue. this is an american issue that we should all care about, all fair minded people should be concerned. >> president obama is currently in poland meeting with european
2:10 am
leaders and he has been briefed on the situation in dpal lass and he asked his team to update him as they get more information. we will see if he has any remarks regarding the dallas shooting coming up. >> we certainly are. we are watching the monitors right now because we have receive add 2 minute warning because the president will be speaking there from poland for the nato conference. right now we have brand new video. police officers lined up with the fallen at noon. they are in dallas and all over the country. >> according to the national law enforcement officer's memorial fund, this was or is the deadliest attack on law enforcement since 9-11. we have once again 5 officers who have lost their lives. also one of those from dart,
2:11 am
that's the first person they have lost in the line of duty. that's the dallas area rapid transit authority in dallas. he has been identified as brent thompson. our hearts go out to brent thompson and his family. >> former dp detective and fox news contributor rod wheeler. how do you think things are going to start to unfold as the morning progresses? i know both the mayor and chief brown have said that we probably wouldn't be hearing from them until a bit later because there's an enormous amount of work to be done. >> right. this investigation itself is going to be very fluid. the fbi and atf as well as a number of other police agencies have offered their assistance to the dallas police department to help them investigate to find out who these individuals are. just so the fewers know there are two individuals the police
2:12 am
were able to arrest. there's a woman that they said is a person of interest. they have not indicated specifically the role that these three individuals play, although the police chief did refer to one of the individuals as a suspect. now the difference there meaning that this individual obviously had a role in the attack on a police officer. they are going to try very diligently this morning to try to get more information from these folks and to continue to do their background checks on these people, see what their associations are. someone tweeted me an interesting question, is it possible the suspects could have driven to dallas just for this attack. that's very possible. that's one of the things the investigators are diligently trying to figure out right now. are these individuals were the dallas area or did they drive there or come there for some other purpose in addition to attacking the police officers? >> they will be able to find out
2:13 am
fairly quickly. as we keep an eye on the president who is scheduled to speak any moment now so we may have to cut you off. i want to ask you something you said earlier. they came last week and talked about yesterday the two shootings that happened within the past week with castillo and sterling. you believe this shooting wasn't necessarily a direct response to those shootings. >> no, i don't. these individuals had to have time to plan this attack. this is a triangulated attack. these people who attacked the police officers at specific locations they had earlier sought out. they figured exactly the time they would be coming on the street protecting the protestors. that's what they shot the officers. these situations based on the type of weapons and ammunition, they were wearing body armor. they had to have planned this
2:14 am
thing out some time ago. i think they hijacked the protest because they saw that opportunity there. we are going to find out these individuals had been planning this attack for some time. >> i think it would be interesting to hear what dialogue took place between the shooter and the man who killed himself. they were in there for two or more hours. they say he was not cooperative. >> i know he said something along the lines of the end is coming and more officers could be would be killed. >> that's what the guy said before he took his own life. he said the end is coming and more police officers would be dying today. he said there were bombs in other places in the city of dallas. this goes to show they had talked about this a while back, probably planned this thing a while back and then the guy p winded up taking his own life.
2:15 am
he had many opportunities to surrender. according to the police chief the guy wasn't too cooperative. it will be interesting to see if the other individuals will be cooperative. are they aligned with a domestic terrorist group, we don't know that yet. but as the day progresses we will start getting answers. >> when we heard president obama speak in reference to the shootings that happened this past week that this is not a black problem, it is not a hispanic problem it is an american problem. he also went on to talk about some status 'tis ticks the number of african americans or hispanics shot killed or arrested compared to others. what would you hope to hear from him today and do you think he will give statistics about the number of officers who are killed in the line of duty? >> you know, to be honest, i don't know what we are going to hear from president obama today. what i would like to hear from president obama is to share with the country that, you know, the
2:16 am
behavior of some of these individuals that assault police officers and of course the individuals that kill the police officers is unacceptable. but i want him to be bold when he says that. i don't want him to be timid. i want him to be clear about that, that this country will not stand for any attack against our law enforcement services in this country. in addition to that he can also say we are going to weed out bad rouge cops and get them off the force and prosecute them but at the same time we must respect our system of justice in this country because that is our american value. we don't want any one to come in and shatter that value. we operate by our constitution. hopefully he is listening to me now and he will be bold when he says it. >> we expect the president to be speaking any moment and secretary of state john kerry has sat down. we expect this to be unfolding shortly. >> i find it so hard to fathom
2:17 am
that someone who has strong, passionate feelings about what has been happening they want to go out there and they want to protest and see justice served would end up in that situation and kill themselves. it seems to me that shows there's a much larger agenda here. >> with the suspect -- i think you are referencing the suspect that wound up killing himself. that did not come as a sur praise to me. that guy didn't want to go. he was going to be killed by police or he was going to be kill by someone else. he knew what had been done. that's another thing that makes me wonder whether or not this was a planned te attack and whether or not these individuals were inspired or directed by others. because if you think about it, that's exactly the way isis operates. isis doesn't want to be taken in. they will wind up killing sthechl first before they will be taking into justice.
2:18 am
i don't want to speculate too much here but at the same time we have to look at all of these things because they are a factor in this investigation. >> one of the conditions witnesses we spoke with early other on the ground hiding trying to stay safe, he said that the gun shots he heard there was one gunshot that sounded like a warning shot followed by several gun shots to get a rapid fire. that was a type of warning shot that was fired. >> it is really hard to decipher what you are hearing in a situation like that. that was a chaotic situation as you can see from the video. a lot of moyse, people were screaming. it is difficult to decipher the type of traffic that you are hearing. many others heard rapid gunfire. one man who is familiar with weapons knew for a fact it was a semiautomatic or automatic weapon because of how fast they
2:19 am
were fired. let's get the exact answers to exactly what went on who did what and how many individuals had weapons and who were shooting them. >> rod, we will check back with you. thank you. >> joining us now is former secret service agent and former nypd officer dna dan bongino. >> we are going live to the president in poland. >> thank you for the opportunity to meet today. i want to begin with a few words about the situation back in the united state united states, the situation in dallas, texas. my team is keeping me updated through out the morning and evening in dallas. i spoke this morning with mayor
2:20 am
rawlings to convey my deepest sympathy to the american people. the federal government will provide whatever assistance dallas needs as it deals with this tremendous tragedy. we still don't know all of the facts. what we do know is that there has been a vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enfierce for -- enforcement. the police officers were ep couldn'ting people safe during peaceful protests. these law enforcement officers were targeted and nearly a dozen officers were shot. five were killed. other officers at least one civilian were wounded. some in serious condition and we are praying for their recovery. as i have told mayor rawlings, i believe that i speak for every
2:21 am
single american when i say that we are horrified over these events and we stand united with the people, and the dismrept in dallas. there are multiple suspects according to police. we will learn more about their twisted motivations. let's be clear there are no possible justifications for these attacks or any violence towards law enforcement. the fbi is in touch with dallas police and any one involved in the senseless murders will be held fully accountable and justice will be done. i will have more to say about this as the facts become more clear. for now, let me just say that even as yesterday i spoke about our need to be concerned as all americans about racial disparities in our criminal
2:22 am
justice system, i also said yesterday our police have an extraordinarily difficult job and a vast majority of them do their job in outstanding fashion. i also indicated that we need to be supportive of those officers who do their job each an every day protecting us and protecting our communities. today is a wrenching reminder of the sacrifices they make for us. we also know that when people are armed with powerful weapons, unfortunately it makes it more deadly and more tragic and in the days ahead we are going to have to consider those realities as well. in the meantime, today our focus is on the victims and their
2:23 am
families. they are heartbroken. the entire city of dallas is grieving. police across america feels this loss to their core. i would ask all americans to say a prayer for these officers and their families, keep them in their thoughts, and as a nation let's remember to express our profound gratitude to our men and women in blue, no the just today but every day. with that i want to thank the presidents for their work here today in war saw. i have worked with donald in his previous capacity as prime minister of poland. our meeting comes at a critical moment for the european union. the vote in the united kingdoms created uncertainty about the future of european integration.
2:24 am
unfortunately this has led some to suggest the entire european security and prosperity is crumbling. >> we have been listening to president obama speaking live from the nato conference in poland beginning his comments referencing the horrible shooting, the terrorist attack that has happened there in dallas, texas, saying amongst other things that we will have to address the use of powerful weapons involved in the attacks in dallas, but saying any possible explanation is senseless and justice will be done. >> he says the vicious and calculated, despicable attack on law enforcement who are simply keeping people safe during a peaceful protest. he is horrified and stands united with the dallas police department. >> joining us now with more insight is secret service agent
2:25 am
and officer dan bongino. you heard the president speaking. you heard him say horrified, twisted motivations, vicious, calculated, despicable attack. did he sound forceful enough for you? did he say enough for you in regards to the attacks that happened? >> it's not what he said after the attack just now it's what he said before the attack yesterday that i think has gotten under the skin of a lot of law enforcement officials. having been a federal agent, a secret service agent, nypd officer i have seen this from a number of perspectives. what the guys are upset about just to be clear here is the fact that when we had the all the alton sterling statement he said this is an american problem. what's an american problem? he said in a statement that facts matter. we don't have the facts yet.
2:26 am
i think it is clear he didn't have the facts either yesterday in that shooting. he constantly jumps out and citying tideses the culture and the united states and cops. it is not what he says after it's what he says in a responsible position before that matters. he has the bully pulpit and he always uses it to seemingly say the wrong things in these police shooting incidents. >> in reference to what he said today, though, he also did take a moment there, although it was briefly to already bring up gun control. do you think that is something he should be doing right now? > i don't think he cares. he saw the cesspool behind him he saw a political opportunity to bring up the gun control issue. we don't know if gun laws had anything to do with this at all. none of those fax are out yet. he senses political
2:27 am
opportunities, his skin is very thick on this. he doesn't seem to care. he doesn't -- he is really not interested in any backlash at all. >> we don't even know the names of the victims. we still have some of the victims in surgery right now as we speak. >> his line was access to powerful weapons make these types of things possible. >> in terms of the family members who have to send their loved ones out on the streets not only in dallas but all across the country to protect people today, what thoughts are going through their minds and the officers themselves, they have to go out there on the streets, do their jobs, clearly they are not safe. >> i will make a personal plea on behalf of at least the men and women i spoke to. it is a small sample size but it is enough. they just want the public support. they don't need blowing praise all of the time. they don't want to be exonerated
2:28 am
every time something happens. they understand oversight is a good thing. they are not looking for a free pass they are looking for the public to give them the support when they are doing their job on a daily basis. with the best of intentions. policing is a tough job. i know, i was there. it is made even tougher with everyone plunging a cell phone camera in your face 24-hours a day. there will be mistakes. no one is looking for a free pass. today is the day. give them a thumbs up, thanks for their service. they are on the front lines of freedom. liberty doesn't defend themselves. these men and women do it at home just like our military overseas. >> what do you think is going through the minds of the men and women of the dallas police department as they move forward and do their jobs today?
2:29 am
>> rarely do you think of your own life. you are in the hot zones and terror zones with the president and you think these guys are constantly worried about dying. cops don't do that. that's not their job. the job is to go out there and forget the fact that they could die any given day. this horrible attack has made it very real for these men and women. a heard a police officer's woman who said the best sound is velcro every night. that's the bulletproof vest coming off every night. i bet that sound for the men and women who made it home sounded really good to the spouses of those officers who made it. >> dan, thank you so much for saying that. a great way to wrap up the conversation with you. certainly true. thank you so much for joining us.
2:30 am
terrific insight for us. >> dan bon gishg no. if you are just joining us we are following breaking news in dallas, texas. five police officers killed in cold blood by snipers during the protest. >> one suspect who is hold up in a parking garage firing at officers for hours shot himself. (gunfire) >> you can see people running for their lives through the streets when the protest erupts into chaos and gunfire. once again, five officers at this hour dead, six more in the shootings. this brand new emotional video showing police officers lined up outside of a hospital saluting their fallen brothers in blue. >> right now flee suspects are in custody their roles and motives not known. >> let's go live right to casey
2:31 am
stegall. what is the latest we know at this hour? >> we know those three suspects are being questioned by dallas police at this hour. one said to be a woman not far from the parking garage. she was taken into custody that way. two men were seen putting a camouflage bag into a mercedes speeding away. police followed them and took those two men in custody south of downtown dallas. eyewitnesss we talked to say it was chaos, one man said he heard up to 50 different gun shots. >> cell phone video shows the crowd scattering around 8:45
2:32 am
local time just as what had been a paceful protest was coming to an end. they were only a block away from finishing. police investigators say the shots came from above the crowd mean ago sniper's perch at a parking garage. the associated press released this chilling video of what appears to be a man with a rifle hiding behind pillars firing that weapon. it was the same man who engaged police with gunfire for more than two hours vowing to hurt more officers but ended up taking his own life. police have not ruled out the idea of additional gunmen being involved. >> we still don't have a complete comfort level. we will continue a rigorous
2:33 am
investigation and search of downtown. likely be working through out the early morning hours of frida friday. >> dart or dallas area rapid transit have already identified their deceased officer. 43-year-old brent thompson had been on the force since 2009. 43-year-old brent thompson one of the five members of law enforcement gunned down here in dallas. >> i understand that's the first officer that dart has lost in the line of duty? >> right. dart is the transportation leg. they operate the buses and the light rail service around the metropl metroplex. they are not typically involved
2:34 am
in the types of situations that say a dallas police officer may find themselves involved in. they are out on the street and armed and here to serve and protect. they had taken the oath. he had been with the department since 2009 and it is for dart the first officer ever killed in the line of duty. >> is it still an active crime scene? whoo right now what is happening? >> this is probably one of the largest crime scenes i have ever personally seen in covering a variety of violent event unfortunately in my career. we are talking about a scene that is literally 4 or 5 blocks in a square sort of all around us. the this perimeter sealed off. there are a lot of shell casings back there as we understand it and just a whole lot of evidence that police are going to have to go through and pour over.
2:35 am
in fact a lot of people are urged to stay home this morning and check with the dallas police department web site. there are a lot of buildings closed a lot of people won't be able to make it into downtown dallas because of the active crime scene. >> any word at all on when we might hear from another press conference or from the mayor or from the chief of police? are you hearing any speculation about a time frame of when we might get information from them? >> let me talk to my producer. there's a press conference with police around what time? 7:30 local time. around 8:30 a.m. eastern is when we are expecting that next tentative press ccity leaders a
2:36 am
police departme -- dallas polic department. they have been trying to keep us up to date and up to speed with what's going on. they also have a huge crime scene that has to be pros messed. top of it they are dealing with their brothers and sisters who have fallen tonight. >> stacy stegall live for us. thank you so much. we will they can back with you. >> president obama, you were with us speaking moments ago from poland evoking the gun control debate in his remarks on the horrific murders of the five police officers in dallas. >> those shootings coming as tensions reach a boiling point nationwide in the wake of two police shootings caught on camera in louisiana and minnesota. >> garrett tenney is live for us in washington, d.c. he has more at this hour on the nation's reaction. garrett? >> heather and patricia. a few minutes ago we heard from
2:37 am
barack obama. he called them vicious calculated attacks targeting police officers. they were doing their job keeping people safe. the president also used the shooting to bring up the issue of gun control. >> we also know when people are armed with powerful weapons, of course it makes events like these more deadly and more tragic. in the days ahead we to consider those realities as well. >> last night there were protests across the country in the wake of these two police shootings, black men both caught on camera. the first was in baton rouge, louisiana. two police officers responded to an anonymous caller who said they were being threatened by someone with a gun outside of a convenience store. you can see the two officers threatening and pinning down alton sterling before officials
2:38 am
shot him. he had a gun at the time. not clear in the video police were aware of that or if he was reaching for it when he was shot. >> the justice department launched a civil rights investigation into that shooting. they are also monitoring the investigation into the second shooting which take place a day later on wednesday outside of st. paul, minnesota. castillo was shot by police after being pulled over. his girlfriend and daughter were in the car with him at the time. his girlfriend recorded the entire incident on his cell phone including the aftermath thoughi showing castillo slumped down and covered in blood. davis said he does not think this would have happened if the driver and passenger had been white. >> all of the facts aren't known but from the evidence presented and video taken nobody should be shot and killed in minnesota for a traffic taillight being out of
2:39 am
function. nobody should be shot and killed when they are seated in their car without a very, very different kind of response. i am heartbroken for minnesota>> the protest in dallas was one of many across the country fro new york city to los angeles as well as washington, d.c. president obama said the federal government will give all of its resources available to help in that investigation. >> that investigation has begun. garrett tenney live for us. thank you. >> joining us on the phone former lapd detective mark fuhrman. since we don't know the affiliation of the suspects now can you tell us what the
2:40 am
suspects they have in custody might be like at the time going on right now? >> i would suspect because of the gravity of the crimes there might be a difficult interrogation if any interrogation at all. it would probably be mostly the detectives speaking to the suspe suspects if they haven't decided to openly talk at all. the detectives are probably doing as much background research of the suspects outside of the interrogation as they are in the interrogation room. in other words, finding out just exactly who these people are writing search warrants or cell phones, electronic devices, their homes and anything else they could find out their associations, any people they are connected to or anyway they
2:41 am
can connect them to this event. hoping it up and ingauengaging e interrogation. that's a difficult situation for the detectives. these suspects have nothing to gain by talking. in terms of what we do know. we know they had body armor and high powered weapons. we know the shooting itself happened in this triangular formation. hopefully you can explain a little bit of that for us. based on what we know do you believe this was a direct result of the shootings that have happened earlier this week or do you believe they were planned in advance and this was just a moment of opportunity for them? >> well, you know, it's difficult to actually know what
2:42 am
logistics these suspects had at their disposable days or weeks ago. the shootings in louisiana and minnesota you can't attribute a multiple suspect shooting like this where they actually operated in a coordinated fashion with each other. you can't expect this to be put together in a couple of days. there was planning and they obviously scouted locations. they knew something of this demonstration and maybe that was the opportunity to act out this plan, the opportunity where you would have a concentrated area of police officers in one location. they took that advantage. they kind of took advantage of this peaceful protest to actually facilitate their plan.
2:43 am
but when you have, you know, kevlar vests, when you have high powered semiautomatic paramilitary weapons, when you have multiple suspects it is not something where somebody just picked up a weapon and walked out of their house and on impulse they acted out something because of personal outrage. this is an ideological well planned, well thought out plan that probably took not a great amount of time to plan, but a significant amount of time. >> what will investigators be looking atlanta both areas of the barking garage they were shooting from and outside where the police officers and victims were shot? >> you have multiple crime scenes where the victims were
2:44 am
shot were the suspect was shooting from, where the suspect attempted to escape from and where they got to their location. you have an inkress and egress of the suspect. that has an evidentiary path. all of the casings when they fired the weapons all of the casings they want to recover because they will be able to match those up with weapons. you have any rounds that were fired that did not hit the human being. they need to recover those. you have a possibility of a vehicle that was used to transport suspects that is quite possibly still in the parking garage that could have dna, fingerprints and other evidence they would be able to acquire. the vehicle that was stopped with the two individuals that put a camo bag in the trunk, they are going to keep that
2:45 am
vehicle and if these are suspects that they have probable cause to belief they were involved they are going to tear that vehicle down and get all evidence they can out of that which will be fingerprints. any kind of bodily fluids and brood anything out of that dna that they could use to identify other suspects. >> as you are speaking there i am catchiwatching this video. we are seeing additional video a moment ago where we saw officers crouching behind police cruisers so they were using the police cruisers to shield themselves. just finally your thoughts for all of the officers who are out there on the streets today those officers who lost their lives. that's the footage i was speaking of you can see people crouching there. there are areas that are being kind of shadowed for us. we can't see what's going on behind the police cruiser but it
2:46 am
appears someone was down there. can you give us your final thoughts on this? >> you know, people kind of take police officers for granted, but it is a brotherhood and it is a tight brotherhood. that brotherhood has been injured, and right now there's a lot of officers that are still doing their job, and their heart is in another place. they are doing their job. it is a difficult thing, but people take them for granted and they probably shouldn't, because they are the fine line between chaos and peace. >> detective mark fuhrman, thank you so much for joining us this morning. difficult day for law enforcement for sure. >> thank you. >> joining us now is texas attorney general ken paxton. just a terrible, horrific and sad day in texas and for america. >> yeah, you know, i wanted to express my heartfelt thoughts for these families that lost
2:47 am
loved ones and just let them know that not only is my family praying for them but people across texas are praying for these families. it is a tragic day in texas. >> were you able to hear what the president had to say from poland just moments ago, and what did you think about his comments amongst other things that he said that this is a vicious, calculated despicable attack on law enforcement and people across the con duntry ar horrified. i agree it was disz pickab -- despicable and horrific. we want to express our appreciation for law enforcement across this state and across this country. >> he also managed to reference briefly, he had one line in there he had one reference to gun control. when people armed with powerful
2:48 am
weapons make attacks like these more deadly and tragic. what do you think about that? was that appropriate to do at this point in time? >> we have laws in texas against murderers. the fact that we have those laws do not stop these people from horrific crimes. adding lesser crime for a gun i don't think would have changed the outcomes here. there need to be discussion about how we stop in this in the future but i don't think his comments were appropriate. >> how do they move forward from this point on after such a heartbreaking event? >> we had a horrific incident here in the 60's when we lost a precedent. this ci -- lost a president. this area will rebound we will support the families and law enforcement. it will be a sad day, and we will have a lot of sad days in front of us. the people in this city are resilient, they are great em poo and they are going to stand up
2:49 am
and fight and be supportive of law enforcement. >> you referenced jfk. what we understand from casey on the scene these officers being treated right now possibly one of the civilians is being treated at the same hospital. we saw images of several officers saluting the officers. what do you think will happen in dallas today? >> for me it is surreal. i used to work two blocks from here right behind me was the building i worked in for two years. it is surreal to be in this crime scene where you have multiple vehicles, police vehicles. it is a very strange event for me. i know people in tech as are going to feel the same way. >> how would you recommend that residents conduct themselves this morning? i am sure there is a lot of concern and confusi -- a lot of
2:50 am
concern and confusion. what is your advice to them? >> i know in my office. we have an office in a close location. in a very close location. we've asked our people not to come in. most people in dallas shouldn't be affected by this location that we're in, but the people around here, i would recommend they not come in, at least not this morning. >> okay. attorney general there from texas, ken paxton joining us. thank you so much for taking the time out this morning. we know that you'll be very busy today. our hearts go out to you and everyone there in dallas. >> we really appreciate it. we appreciate the prayers of the nation. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> so what kind of weapons were used to gun down these police officers and where could someone get them? joining us now is forensic expert jennifer berringer. she has more insight on this. you've been here lis zwroeng this. what are your thoughts about the weapons that were possibly used
2:51 am
in this attack. >> certainly we'll know more coming up, but for now unfortunately just the laws that there are and they're in texas, there's a lot of hunting going on there, these could have been hunting rifles. the difference is scopes. scopes can be purchased online. so i know that a lot of your guests have been saying this is perhaps a very planned attack. in theory this could have been done on the spur of a moment with a hunting rifle. as long as it was a double shot weapon they could easily do it with something you could purchase from a grocery store. >> what's interesting, i did a little bit of research into this, was not aware of it, perhaps other people are, you are, that you can go into these gun shops and you can buy adapters, right, which can adapt a gun and can make it an assault
2:52 am
rifle? >> that's right. it will certainly allow the rifle to shoot faster which may have been what they were hearing. for now we know there may have been more than one person involved, more than one shooter. even if it were just the one, it could have been a hunting rifle that had a good scope on it that had been modified, as you say, or maybe not even modified. a lot of times you can hear echos, things like that. he could certainly shoot quickly enough and from the vantage point that he had, that could have been done is something you could have purchased almost anywhere. >> we're looking at the video. you can see some of the flashes from the gun as he fires. >> jennifer, in one of the twitter videos that someone had posted, we heard the pop, pop, pop, about the 50 or 60 shots being described, you're saying that that doesn't necessarily mean that that was an automatic
2:53 am
weapon or those were automatic weapons? >> that's right. it doesn't mean that it was. as long as you have a rifle that has a clip and it's not a situation where your bullet actually has to be ejected in between, like a single action rifle, you can shoot rather quickly, very. >> in terms of the crime scene itself and what investigators would be looking for at this point, clearly they would be looking for gun casings, bullets, all of that type of thing? >> absolutely. they could easily pull dna off of that. there may have been one shooter but certainly there were others involved. >> jennifer, as far as they were mentioning throughout the night, one of the suspects threatened there might be other explosive devices placed in that facility that they were shooting from, that parking garage or throughout the city, what are
2:54 am
your thoughts on that as morning breaks? >> that's right. it's really frightening. i'm sure they have the whole area cordoned off. we don't know whether or not something else could be happening. ely emerging as we're speaking. anything could happen right now. you mentioned the fact that there were bombs placed around the city. who knows when any of those could go off. it's frightening. >> that's horrible video that we are watching. it's exactly what i thought it was. you can see an officer down behind one of the police cruisers. you can see it as they pan over there. just horrible for all of these families. the crime scene itself being a larger area, how will that impact the investigation? >> hugely. i know they're going to want to do a lot of investigation on the scene, and the bigger that it is, obviously the harder to do. also, this is a very well-traveled area, so as soon as they let people back in, the entire area becomes dirty. you've got feet going through
2:55 am
it. it just -- it really disturbs the crime scene so -- >> yeah. what are some of the questions that you think investigators are asking these suspects this morning that they have in captivity at this point? >> i suspect the vast majority of questions are going to be aimed at if they actually have all of the suspects in custody right now and obviously as we were discussing, if there are other packages, if there are bombs in the area, if they can force some of these suspects to tell them where they are if they know. >> then all the officers, we're looking at some live pictures of officers standing there at salute outside the hospital where their colleagues, their brothers and sisters are being treated at 24 hour where their other colleagues have lost their lives. these officers also will be witnesses, the ones that were on the scene when all of this transpir transpired, correct? >> absolutely. everyone there will be a witness from what they heard to what
2:56 am
they saw. also anything that they may have seen on the ground. casings, anything like you said. now our dna evidence goes down to such tiny little elements that we're looking for almost anything. >> jennifer barringer, forensic expert, thank you for your insights this morning. joining us, a witness from the shooting. luis pella ortiz. he was there witness to everything that transpired. thank you once again for joining us this morning. >> good morning. >> so explain to us or describe to us the moments as they unfolded that you were there. you were walking towards the protests, correct? >> yes. we were trailing the protests by half a block. i was with a friend. the first thing be we saw was there was about 1,000 people in the protest i would estimate. all of a sudden the protest just split into two, people running
2:57 am
in every direction. and immediately i hid behind a black sedan that was right in front of us. at that time we didn't really think we were in danger. we thought a firecracker had gone off or something to that effect. and there was a gap in time where things seemed to calm down and then the shootings started. that was our perception. that's what we heard. >> right. and what happened immediately after the shootings started when you tried to run and take cover? what were you seeing other people and law enforcement were doing around you? >> well, the police officers headed straight into it. there wasn't a lot of hesitation. as soon as the first thing, when the people were confused, the police officers were already heading in. at the beginning there was a lot of confusion with people. some people were running but
2:58 am
they didn't get the feeling that they thought they were in danger, in serious danger. and then once there was a gap in time and the shooting actually started, that's when i really saw the fear in people's eyes, everybody running. everybody heading west down commerce away from the protests. really in every direction. >> as people were running for their lives and you were hiding behind a vehicle to save yours, you saw officers running into the line of fire to protect you? >> yeah. yeah. we happened to be standing right by four or five police officers with their cars that were blocking commerce, traffic coming in. it didn't -- by the time that i was -- that i hid behind the car they had all started to drive in. they were very, very -- i mean, extremely fast in their response. >> well, luis, we thank you for
2:59 am
your insight once again and we are certainly glad that you are okay. >> yeah. >> well, you know, one of the -- this is our neighborhood. i live just down the street and it's devastating. i can't explain, our neighbors living down the street from this happening. >> certainly surreal day it will be for all of you. thank you. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> to quickly recap. five police officers killed, 11 shot together after two snipers opened fire on police in dallas. at least six officers, possibly one civilian still being treated at the hospital there. we've been watching these pictures as they've continued to unfold all morning long. officers lined up in salute outside of the hospital there as their colleagues are still being treated. >> yes. a terribly sad day in dallas. >> three people we believe are under arrest and in custody at this hour. two men and one woman.
3:00 am
>> yes. we are expecting a press conference coming up later this morning to get some more. >> that should be about 8:30 a.m. eastern time i believe casey siegel said. >> thank you for joining us. we'll continue to follow this. "fox & friends" starts right now. good morning, it is friday, july 8th, 2016. we begin with some heartbreaking breaking news. five police officers murdered in cold blood. it is the deadliest attack on law enforcement since september 11th. >> snipers opening fire in downtown dallas, texas, at the end of a black lives matter protest. 11 officers shot. again, five of them dead. several others are fighting for their lives on this friday morning. right now police officers are standing outside a hospital there saluting their brothers in blue. >> now to the suspects. one gma
