we will be at the republican convention. we'll be there next send. ladies and gentlemen, see you then from cleveland. a time for reflection in a week of turmoil and anguish. we are looking to honor the five lives lost in a cold and calculated attack on the city's finest. welcome to a brand new hour. >> hello everyone. dallas grieves. tensions are on the ride. demonstrations continued over philando castile and sterling.
9:01 am
some threw rocks and bottles at police. more than 100 arrests were made in louisiana this weekend. we have all of this for you. let's begin with jonathan who is live in baton rouge, louisiana with the very latest. what is happening now and is it quiet here on sunday? >> reporter: yeah, hi, eric. it is relatively quiet. what we found during the day midday at one of the major staging areas of the demonstrations. by late afternoon crowds begin to increase. right now i'm standing in front of the convenience store where sterling was shot during the early morning hours of tuesday. you can see a relatively quiet crowd here but later today a major rally is planned starting at a local church marching towards the state capital.
9:02 am
>> and what happened in terms of the demonstration about alton sterling's death? >> reporter: yeah, last night there was another demonstration outside baton rouge police headquarters. demonstrators were here because they wanted more face to face contact. for the past couple of nights they have been showing up outside police headquarters. last night police were prepared for them. they had barricades and they announced that they would arrest any of the protesters who attempted to block airline highway. most complied but occasionally you would have small groups walking out in traffic and you would see police in riot gear coming out and pushing them back to the curb. among them a prominent activist within the black lives matter
9:03 am
movement was taken into custody. >> yeah, and he was supposed to be on meet the press today but that arrest cancelled that appearan appearance. thank you for the latest on louisiana. >> opening up the interstate after protesters blocked the roadway. they arrested about 100 people. several officers were also injured during the growing situation in st. paul, minnesota. demonstrati demonstrators are demanding justice for philando castile. the aftermath of that streamed by his fiance on facebook live. we have more on that unfolding case. hi matt. >> reporter: yeah. calm and peaceful into the materially morning hours. protesters carried out their plans to shut down interstate
9:04 am
94. hundred of protesters stormed the freeway closing eight lanes. for hours police stood by and allowed them to demonstrate and chant and then things turned ugly as protesters threw bottles and even a molotov cocktail. one officer had a bottle thrown to his face and was injured. st. paul police say they made over 100 arrests. it started with peaceful protests downtown but things got progressively worse. it is all because of the incident on wednesday where a minnesota police officer shot and kimmed castile. his girlfriend broadcasted it live on facebook. we have spoken to the attorney. he tells us that the police officer shot and killed castile
9:05 am
because he saw a visible gun and he did 23409 comply when he saw the gun that day. >> thanks so much. investigators in dallas combing the crime scene for answers about the deadly shooting. police blocking downtown streets as they piece together the events leading up to the attack. authorities trying the figure out how micah johnson got ahold of his weapons and if anyone else was involved. let's bring new member of the fbi terror task force. steve, i'm so happy to have you here with us to talk about this. of course the feds are conducting a multi-layered investigation. can you tell us what those layers are and which agencies are involved? >> well, the task force is involved in this and may be taking the lead at this point. the reason is because of the amount of weapons and there were
9:06 am
bombs that this individual had in position, there is a lot of forensic investigation that has to be completed. they will look at his computer, cell phone. it looks like a domestic terrorism attack but that's why the layers are going to be all part of this investigation. >> and i think one of the questions people have is where did this guy get all of these weapons? >> it seems to me -- and i have been involved for some time. he didn't have one or two rifles. this guy was ready to go to war. i believe it was confirmed this wasn't the original target. there was going to be a greater and bigger target somewhere down the road but the march became a crime or terrorist attack of opportunity and he knew there would be a lot of police officers there and a lot of
9:07 am
targets. >> i was actually watching the dallas police chief this morning. i want to play some of that sound and talk to you about it. >> well, we detonated the device to end the stand off. there was more lettering written in his own blood. >> what did he write? >> we are trying to decipher that. he wrote the letters r-b. >> r-b? >> yes, r-b. we are trying to figure out what those initials mean. >> you hear that the killer wrote in his blood the letters r.b. >> it could be one of two things, as significant as a good-bye to someone he loves or a signal to someone else, mission accomplished, something else. this chief is an american hero. >> i love him. >> he is a great leader and has
9:08 am
been very transparent. the chief mentioned no stone will be unturned. you go back to the layers we talked about. during the investigation they might find out what r.b. means. >> and you told me how this killer was planning something else and he saw the protest as an opportune time to have a lot of police officers exposed in one place. how is this guy able to seemingly unnotice move through the crowds? >> i'm saying to myself, the only way he could have done that is if he had people walking with him to cover him. i find it hard to believe she walking through the crowd with a lot of weapons. it tells me the weapons could have been planted in the places he was going to conduct the attack. the key here is if you see something say something. a lot of people saw a lot and
9:09 am
said nothing. >> and to that point, i think many people in communities are hesitant to say something for fear of who may be in their background or fear of retaliation from the suspect in this case, the killer in this case that had not died. >> they could remain anonymous. after one of the fox interviews i had i received an e-mail with evidence and information. because of what fox is doing in getting this story out, that stuff was turned over to the fbi. the person asked me to keep him anonymous and i'm going to do that. >> any final thoughts? >> yes. it's sunday. we need to get together and pray for our country and pray for the police officers. this isn't democrat or republican. this is all about americans. let's come together in prayer on this sunday. >> pray for the officers and those having lost loved ones this week. thank you.

i appreciate you. >> thank you. donald trump is reportedly considering retired lieutenant general michael flinn as his number two. he admitted he be open to taking the number two job. some analysts are surprised as they expect trump to pick someone with more traditional political experience. >> this is a strange name to float because this is more like somebody who would serve in the cabinet as secretary of defense, not a vice president. >> okay. we'll have a live report on trump's entire line-up later on in the show. president obama making a stop in spain today as his european trip comes to an end. he met with the prime minister before touring a u.s. naval station in spain.
9:11 am
he is cutting the visit one day short. he will return home and travel to dallas in the coming week. we have more on the president's visit. hi kevin. >> reporter: always great to talk to you. the president figured he would be here for four days. it is just three because of what happened in dallas, texas. keep in mind, he wanted to talk about security cooperation, economic cooperation but it was all overshadowed by the lives that were taken of the dallas police officers. president obama talked about what a lot will find interesting. he was talking about black lives
9:12 am
matter. the president had something interesting as well to say about this debate over fair policing, listen. >> one of the great things about america is that individual citizens and groups of citizens can petition their government, can protest, can speak truth to power and that is some times messy and controversial. >> reporter: no question about that, messy indeed. right now the american family is having a spirited and heated conversation about this topic. the president also took the time today and perhaps even a preview of what we should expect when he makes his way to texas later in the week. he took a great deal of effort to talk about law enforcement and the need for all americans
9:13 am
to come together to support them. >> when ever those of us who are concerned about fairness in the criminal justice system attack police officers you are doing a disservice to the cause. >> reporter: the president did still make a trip here to spain and the president toured the u.s. schlt ross. he also took the time to address american troops serving so well here in this beautiful land. you have probably heard all day long that the president is not only making his way to dallas, texas this week but we are still trying to lock that down. as soon as we hear we'll be there for you.
