reserve and abbreviated tour in afghanistan. he was already familiar with weapons and had been combat trained by the u.s. military. micah johnson sup p -- supplemented that by visits to a gym in self-defense. neighbors saw him practicing military-style in his backyard. afound a journal of shoot and move listing different was of firing on targets and getting to another spot quickly. it is behavior very similar to the assault carried out on thursday night. johnson was likely wounded during that shoot out. it appears he left plemessages.

they are still trying to decipher and ask how many cops he had shot. >> the evidence response team is processing that extensive crime scene and recreating the sequence of events of every shot fired. it is receiving what is called a credible threat. the parking garage was sealed off after a suspicious person was reported inside the structure which is only supposed to be used by department employees. the search lasted nearly two hours but turned up no one. no one was found inside that garage. back here the memorial continues to grow with messages of love and respect for those killed and

wounded on thursday night. we can report that all three of the da.a.r.t. officers have bee released from the suspect. >> hopefully we'll get more in a press conference a lit it later this hour. we plan to bring that live as that happens. thank you, rick. anti-police protests across the country have been anything but peaceful over the weekend. five officers suffered injuries after demonstrators hurled rocks and fire crackers as well as bottles at police. aufr officers used smoke bombs to clear protesters who tried to shut down interstate 94. several dozen arrests were made. tensions remained high in baton rouge, louisiana. more than a hundred others were

arrested where police shot alton sterling and they marched down to a local precinct. it was one of many protests nationwide to protest the killing of black men in louisiana and minnesota. crowds marched in philadelphia shouting slogans in chicago. about 200 black lives matter disrumtdi disrupted the taste of chicago. in atlanta multiple arrests were made as marchers called for reforms in american policing. >> in recent years the department of justice launched investigations into police fatally shooting civilians. many were blasted out in the public. public opinion and d.o.j. investigations can reach different conclusions. is there something that needs to change? george was the acting attorney

general that handled investigations and is now a partner. thank you for joining us. >> thank you for being here. >> i wanted to ask you, the d.o.j. is monitoring the shooting death of philando castile but we know they are launching a civil rights into another shooting in baton rouge, the shooting death of alton sterling. the you explain to me the difference in those two investigations? >> the basic difference is in one the department of justice will standby to assist, will monitor the developments and reserve the option of stepping in to conduct their own investigation. on the other on the basis of information they have so far they decided to step in and make it an independent federal investigation which may be the only investigation or may be

parallel to a local. >> how much will the public learn in both of these instances? >> i think what we have seen in the past is that whether it's a federal investigation or local investigation, at the end of the day the public becomes pretty well informed about what the results of those investigations are. i think the important thing is for everybody, the public, political figures to withhold judgments until those facts are in. >> that's what i was going to ask you. >> we have seen the way things appear may not be how they turn out when the full record is made. >> and it will help the public to learn exactly what happened. theood of charges is impossible to predict, right? >> that's correct, for sure. >> and then we have heard one of the governors mention there would be the d.o.j. involvement.

we heard the president comment and mentioned these two cases specifically. does it have any impact on the d.o.j. investigation? >> i hope not. the investigation ought to be a search for truth by the gathering of facts. it shouldn't make a difference whether any political figure thinks it is a good idea or not a good idea. i think the other thing that's important to keep in mind isn't just what you just reported about the demonstrations and so forth. what are police doing out there when some of these incidents occur? they are out there protecting people's civil rights. it is allows people to protest, allowing people to drive down the highway, other people interfering. the police really are the front line of our protection, of civil rights. i think we forget that too often as we isolate in on relatively

bad conduct. >> and to expand on that, when you see -- and from your experience of working in the doj how do these help other hinder or impact what these men and women do every day? >> in investigations that are conducted fairly and send a message to law enforcement office officers, we are also going to deal with circumstances that arrive unfortunately from time to time. officers may get outside the law. some times it's a mistake. some times it's a bad judgment, some times it's bad conduct. >> all right. we appreciate you coming on and talking to us about this. any time line how long -- if you could give an educated guess on how long before we see and also learn more circumstances surrounding incidents. >> that's right. oftentimes we see a little bit of a video snippet.

when we get all of the facts in six, seven, eight or nine months things can look very different. >> we have had that in a couple of incidents over the past couple of years. thanks for being here. >> thank you. let's get the latest on the activists who have camped outside of the governor's mansion in st. paul. that's where we find matt finn. >> reporter: hi. it is day five in front of the governor's mansion. there are about a dozen protesters out here expressing why they are upset. it was a much different scene last night into the early morning hours of today. hundreds of protesters stormed interstate 94 and shut it down in both directions. it created a traffic nightmare in the area. around sunset protesters stormed the freeway and for hours police stood by and allowed them to demonstrate and chant and then things turned ugly as protesters

threw bottles, commercial grade fireworks at offers. one officer had a bottle thrown at his face. they made over 100 arrests for riot and public nuisance. it started in downtown minneapolis but things got progressively worse. it is because of the incident on wednesday when a minnesota police officer shot and killed philando castile. many people saying it was a racial profile and racially motivated killing. we have spoken to the officer of that attorney who tems fox that the officer pulled the trigger and killed castile because he saw a visible gun on his lap in the car and castile did not respond to do not move orders. back to you elizabeth. >> thank you. we certainly hope everyone stays

safe and peaceful. thank you so much. in baton rouge, louisiana where there is already tension over the killing of a black man by a white police officer, police investigating one of their own reportedly showing his weapon to protesters and allegedly there is a picture of it. we are live in baton rouge. protests continue in that town as well. hi jonathan. >> hi. right now i'm standing in the parking lot of the convenience store where sterling was shot during the early predawn hours of tuesday. ever since then it has been the scene of pretty much nonstop rallies and vigils. in recent days many protesters have been fanning out to other parts of the community, in particular an area in front of baton rouge police headquarters. this was the scene from last

night. by and large the protesters remain peaceful however there is a fraction of protesters looking for a more direct confrontation with officers, so they disobey orders not to venture into airline highway and will attempt to shut down traffic. that's when officers come out in full riot gear and make arrests. there were numerous arrests last night including the arrest of mckessin who also ran for mayor of baltimore. the protests continue today. in fact in late afternoon demonstrators planning on marching from a low dcal church town. we'll keep you updated on what unfolds there. back to you. >> hopes more violence doesn't break out. here in washington congress reconvenes tomorrow.

democrats will continue their cries for more gun control in light of the dallas shootings. let's bring in will from the great state of texas. it is a former c.i.a. is this the right conversation to be having in the 48 hours after the dallas shootings, for the president to say this is proof we need more gun control? >> it's not. unfortunately a lot of times when things happen like this everyone retreats to their corners and bring out talking points. the reality is we have to work together. we have to stop talking past one oochlt i think washington act chul actually has an opportunity to lead here by finding out what is the problem and then you start talking about solutions. >> you know, if you listen to the president it is pretty interesting. in one way he praised dallas in the way police have conducted

themselves with the community and praised them that crime is at a significant low. he failed to mention texas is one of the few states that allows open carry. how does the president square that rhetoric when he heads to your state in a few days? >> i think we'll find out in a few days. when we look at violent crime it decreased significantly over the last 15 years. here is what we need to tell people. if you're trying to sell fear and terror to divide america you will not win. we need to use the examples that these police officers are a rallying cry for us to work together. these are men that put themselves in harm's way protecting people that were protesting law enforcement. >> and these five died protesting the very people who

white house that says they are raci racist. as a result hundreds of black lives are being taken to not a peep of protest from black lives matter activists. >> i think i know the answer to this question but do you think that the administration has some blame for this in terms of the way they are talking about police and in the way they are not talking about the situation in chicago and baltimore and other cities who have similarly skyrocketing crime statistics? >> i think unfortunately president obama is to blame, leland. you can look at his speech before the dallas assassination. he engaged in a set of lies, none of which are justified when you take black crime rates into account. that type of relentless critique adds to the type of hostility that officers are experiencing

now in inner city areas. it dethreatens the basis of law >> the issue of rush to judgment is an important one. we saw the president come out and talk about the death of michael brown when the hands up, don't shoot narrative had some type of credibility. by heard him come out and talk about freddie gray. in both of those cases they are in the process of being cleared. there has not been one conviction and we have not heard one peep saying maybe we got it wrong. it is not maybe what message does it send to the communities but what message does it send to police officers? >> on friday i was talking with a police trainer who was engaging with about 50 officers. he said they were going out of their minds at the rush to the assumption that what was
