we begin with a fox news alert. police unveiling disturbing details about the dallas killer. he may have had much deadlier plans in the works before turning his hate-filled fury. the gunman that shot 14 people may have changed his plans at the last minute to coincide with the protest against police brutality. we know officers found bomb-making materials and weapons in his home. what his original target was remains a mystery, at least publicly. we are hearing from more people injured in the chaos that night. one woman shared her emotional

experience when an officer shielded her and her son. she was on the ground, bleeding. >> the officer jumped and covered me an my son and there was another at our feet and over our heads and several lying against the wall over there, and they just -- they were with us. and i saw another officer -- saw another officer get shot. >> wow. now the healing. a prayer service and a call for tolerance and understanding. no break in the protesting against police brutality. this is a live look at a march taking place right now in boston, massachusetts. all at this hour, demonstrations in atlanta, washington, d.c. and saint anthony, minnesota. we are watching all of it.

rick leventhal is beginning our coverage from dallas. just hearing that woman talk about her heros in blue, very moving. >> absolutely. december 350i9 the intense heat here in dallas, a steady flow of people have been coming to police headquarters throughout this day to show their respect and love for the fallen officers by leaving signs of support, balloons and flowers, covering a couple of cars in front of police headquarters. as you mentioned, we are learning more about the shooter, micah johnson, who authorities say was a lone gunman in thursday's attack. he not only possessioned bomb-making materials in his home but had been practicing detonations, according to the chief, and defining his combat skills he learned in the army by practicing in his backyard the last few weeks. there was a journal detailing his shoot and move strategy and investigators found methamphetamine in his home. this morning, the dallas police

1:04 am
i'm so thankful. i had never seen anything like that. the way they just came around us and just guarded us like that. >> tuesday, the president will be here for a memorial service. details on the funerals for the five fallen officers have not been released. >> thank you very much. now we will learn more about the officers who lost their lives in dallas. we have a look behind the badge of those men in blue who were ambushed. >> reporter: these men were fathers,er husbands, sons and brothers. each of them gave their lives protecting others. 43-year-old brent thompson was a former marine who fell in love on the job during his seven years as an officer with the dallas rapid transit authority and married a fellow dart officer.

short. he was away at nato. talks there and visiting with u.s. troops. he met with the king of spain before heading back to the united states. we're told the president will deliver remarks at a memorial service in dallas. we have more from madrid. >> reporter: good evening from madrid spain where we know where president obama will be spending his tus, in dallas, texas. during which time he is expected to deliver remarks at an interfaith service to honor the 0 fallen officers. it was that and not community cooperation that became the news of the president's now shortened trip to europe and specifically to spain. the president did manage to meet with the king of spain and the interim prime minister during the visit and took a tour of military assets here and spent time with service personnel before heading home for washington. as has been the case throughout the visit to europe, talk turned to the tragedy in texas. as many of you know, the group

black lives matter has been credited with conducting demonstrations to protest killings but also accused of inciting violence about which the president said this. >> in a movement like black lives matter there's always going to be some folks who say things are stupid or inprudent or overgeneralized or harsh and i don't think that you can hold well-meaning activists who are doing the right thing and peacefully protesting, responsible for everything that is uttered at a protest. >> reporter: the president said protesting is fine, but the tone should never lead to violence. >> whenever those of us who are concerned about fairness in the criminal justice system attack police officer
1:08 am
police officers, you are doing a disservice to the cause. >> we saw the president come out forcefully in support of law enforcement in his comments today. he said they not only need the support of the american people but deserve the support of the american people. no doubt a message he will be delivering in more detail as he makes his remarks in dallas on tuesday. >> thank you. no doubt a message the president is hearing a lot right now from a lot of people. also the final countdown looks to politics and the presidential convention. republicans one week from tomorrow in cleveland, ohio. who will donald trump choose as his vice presidential running mate? and given the issues the nation is facing right now, who do you think would be a good choice. retired general flynn is on the short list. some conservatives say they are not wild about him. we will get in to that. and hillary clinton set to make a key campaign stop this week and you know who will be with her? bernie sanders? where is the bern?
1:09 am
1:12 am
we are fast approaching the republican national convention and there are reports that donald trump will pick his running mate. he is set to campaign with one of the men on the short list chris christie. brian is live in the new york newsroom with more. a lot of anticipation with this. what do you have? >> according to former house speaker newt gingrich, who's been being vet were the vp spot we can expect trump to make niz vp announcement thursday or friday of this week. and governor christie will campaign with trump tomorrow in virginia beach, virginia after dropping out of the race. the governor emerged as one of
1:13 am
trump's most fervent supporters and new jersey insiders believe he wants the job and is auditioning for it. media reports point to gingrich, christie and mike pence as front runners. but a new dark horse has emerged. retired lieutenant general flynn. trump is now considering general flynn to show he's strong on national security, a registered democrat, the general ran the defense intelligence agency for two years under the obama administration but has been a harsh critic of the president. this morning, the general said he would be honored to be -- he is honored to be in the discussion for vp but then said this when asked about his stance on abortion. >> women have to be able to choose what they, a right of choice, but i think it is a difficult legal decision.
1:14 am
>> in a statement the powerful anti-abortion lobbyist, the susan b. anthony list responded general flynn has disqualified himself from consideration as vice president. his pro-abortion position is unacceptable and under mine the pro life policy commitment that mr. trump has made throughout the campaign. this as the anti-trump movement is preparing to change national convention rules making it easier for delegates to reject his vp pick and pick one of their own. >> wow. around and around we go. we have heard people will be very upset if anything like that happens. it is crunch time for hillary clinton to choose her running mate. the former secretary of state is looking to unify democrats while unveiling a new series of health care proposals widely interpreted as an olive branch to bernie sanders supporters. and then the news they are going to be together. kristin fisher is live for us in washington.
1:15 am
is she going to feel the bern? >> if she does, we hear it might be happening on tuesday. but first, i want to get to rumors about clinton's vice president. three of the people believed to be on clinton's short list were on the sunday shows this morning. all on message addressing similar themes to the slogan stronger together. they are trying to paint her as a great unifying or less device i have than donald trump. >> we're all in this together. her campaign has been about the fact that when we marshall the collect i have power of we and come together as a community around the reality that we have racial disparities in our criminal justice system and we ve very challenging times for police officers. >> with the democratic convention two weeks from tomorrow, the party's flat form was finalized last night. it features several significant
1:16 am
compromises between the bernie sanders and clinton campaigns. to the point where sanders is calling it, listen to this, the most progressive platform in the history of the democratic party. now he pushed clinton far to the left on higher education, health care and federal minimum wage, it appears he may be ready to endorse her. multiple sources confirmed to fox news it will likely happen at a rally in new hampshire on tuesday. that would be a big boost for the clinton campaign heading in to the convention. the question is will his supporters follow suit? despite the compromises between the candidates there was some contentious moments between sanders and clinton supporters just this weekend. >> what is interesting, a lot of people say they support bernie sanders, like that free stuff he's giving away. you saw hillary clinton last week promise goods in terms of college costs and so on and so forth. maybe she throws enough money out there. we will have to see what they do. thank you very much. >> my pleasure. now to the story unfolding
1:17 am
for days. more than 100 people arrested in the latest roundup of protesters in the streets and then in cuffs. watch. >> what was his crime? why is he being arrested? why is he being arrested? >> why is he being arrested right now? >> why is he being arrested right now? >> what did he do? >> they were lawfully gathered, they say. why did they end up behind bars? and elsewhere police officers injured in clashes with protesters. and the insiders have some political scoop about that sanders and clinton meet up. what do they know?
1:20 am
1:21 am
in. let's pause for that. here's what it looked like in saint paul. the demonstrations spiraled out of control. people threw rocks and bottles at law enforcement. nearly 30 officers and state troopers were hurt in that. now the video i was mentioning. it is in from saint paul. this is where people are marching through the streets in what appears to be a peaceful protest. we show you both of those. we have fox team coverage on this. jonathon is in baton rouge, louisiana. first to matt fin who's live in saint paul. things are changed a bit and calmed down. >> yeah, right now there are a few dozen protesters in front of the governor's mansion. it is peaceful, perhaps the demonstration people like to see. these guys are articulating how they feel, expressing frustrations and people are listening a much different scene last night when hundreds of protesters rushed interstate 94 and closed all eight lanes in
1:22 am
both directions, creating a traffic nightmare. officers stood by for hours and allowed them to chant and march. they allowed protesters to get in their face and scream obscenities and did not stop them. it turned ugly as they threw fireworks, bottles and rocks a police. 21 officers injured in all. one had a concrete cylinder at his neck and has suffered a broken vertebra. this is about the incident earlier this week. attorneys say he pulled the trigger because he saw a gun in the car. and he did not comply with the do not move order. >> thank you very much. word now some protesters are trying to shut down a highway in louisiana in outrage over the death of alton sterling. demonstrations have been getting more intense and this is a look at angry protesters clashing
1:23 am
with police. they are speaking out against the shootings that are left black men dead in multiple states. jonathon is live in baton rouge. let's start with what is going on now and the highway they are trying to close. >> hi, harris. moments ago, we saw police cruisers, one after the other heading in this direction down airline highway toward the interstate. police had gotten word that protesters were attempting to shut down a section of interstate in downtown baton rouge. police heading in that direction. they were also told one of the government streets in downtown baton rouge is also closed due to a protest. behind me, around police headquarters, you can see the police barricade set up in anticipation of protesters arriving in the area as they did last night. overnight, police arrested a total of 101 people, mostly for
1:24 am
the misdemeanor of obstructing a highway. among them deray mckesson, a prominent active assist for the black lives movement and ran for baltimore mayor. one legal observer was taken in to custody and three journalists arrested, including a reporter from brightbart. police response was described as moderate but he said he hears the protesters loud and clear and understands their demands. >> we will have to re-evaluate where we are and the way recruit and train officers, retrain them, in-service training that and sort of thing to make sure we engage in the best practices available nationally, to make sure we can deis ka late situations and the use of deadly force is not employed as often going forward. >> but back to that breaking
1:25 am
news, again, protesters in downtown baton rouge attempting to shut down a section of interstate. police have responded and we have been informed that police are donning their gas masks. harris, back to you. >> oh, boy. we will come back to you as the news warrants on that. that is a new development. thank you very much. final preparations are underway for the republican national convention. so many questions remain. who's going to be speaking? who will run as a vice presidential candidate along with trump? and speaking of trump, he and hillary clinton are about to take the 2016 race to the next level. we will look ahead as the average of polls show a tight race between trump and clinton. we love it when you chime in. get out your small screen. find us on our fox social pages, twitter and facebook and "legends and lies" follows this program on sunday nights. guess who is coming up to

[beekeeper] from bees to business expenses, i'm in charge of it all. so i've been snapping photos of my receipts and keeping track of them in quickbooks. now i'm on top of my expenses, and my bees. best 68,000 employees ever. that's how we own it. >> give me liberty or give me death. >> oh, i can't wait. a brand new episode of "legends and lies, the patriots" is coming right away after "the fox report." a ten-part series exposes untold truths about the heros and
1:30 am
patriots who shaped our nation. this week it is thomas jefferson, independence declared. host of the o'reilly factor, bill o'reilly is the producer and is joining me to talk about it. hi, bill. >> hi, harris. >> why is it important to point out the lies? i always point out this, about people we think we know already? >> well, you know, the mythology of our politicians ended probably after john f. kennedy was assassinated and then we got in to tearing them to pieces. these were human beings. i just saw "hamilton" on broadway this week. and thomas jefferson is portrayed as an f.o.p. on stage. it was funny. it was amusing. but i could see a lot of people were confused was he really that way and he wasn't. and they wanted to know more about him and that's why we do
1:31 am
the series to tell you what is true and what is a myth. we call it "legends and lies." it could be legends and myths. >> as we inch our way toward the 2016 election in november, are there some lessons that will pop out? >> well, the lessons are always pretty much the same, that even though we live in a republic and we have freedom, how that freedom is exercised is always in dispute. so, for example, you have jefferson and adams -- john adams. they hated each other and tore each other to pieces in the election of 1800. we will see two individuals, hillary clinton and donald trump tear each other to pieces in this election. things haven't changed very much. power is something that people really want. they are willing to do a lot of different things to get it. >> very well put.
1:32 am
a lot of lovers of history, like myself. there's a whole channel dedicated to it. i have never seen anything like it. why so do you think? >> because it is me and my charming personality. we can see the legends and lies series and the corresponding book which thank god is the biggest seller in the country right now, we can see it in the same vein as the killing series. that we are going to tell you what happened and back it up. a lot of people don't like that. you saw the controversy over killing reagan, for example. they don't want you to say the bad with the good. but to me in order to make these people come alive in the sense that people get interested in them, like the "hamilton" play, you have to tell people they were human beings, not perfect. here's the good and bad. >> the education of harris
1:33 am
faulkner by bill o'reilly. f.o.p., someone who loves the way they dress. >> the director of hamilton is a genius. the way he did it and gotten young people interested in history. hamilton was almost booted off the money, our currency and then they saved him. any way, i think people in that same vein when they watch "legends and lies" at 8:00 tonight l see something true and teach them something. >> your creativity shines, bill. thank you for coming on and telling us all about it. have a great sunday night. more coming up. don't miss the brand new "legends and lies patriots" after the fox report. looking ahead here, the
1:34 am
stories this week, donald trump will campaign tomorrow with virginia -- in virginia i should say with new jersey governor chris christie. trump may announce his choice for vice president as early as next week. this week, told told. and tuesday hillary clinton makes a campaign stop with former primary rival bernie sanders. we are one week away from the rnc convention in cleveland. let's bring in our fox news political insiders. my happy place. former congressman for new york. former pollster for jimmy carter and fox news contributor doug shone and fox news contributor, as well. start with the vp pick, if we can. donald trump, we are getting a view of the short list. >> sure. >> we see him with some of these people. your thoughts. >> donald trump has to do something bold with the vp. this is a big week just concluded for secretary hillary clinton. hillary clinton was exonerated on the e-mail scandal.
1:35 am
>> oh, my gosh. pat is rolling his eyes. he's going to fall asleep. >> hillary, we have to face facts and the facts are exonerating campaigning, as you said with berz bernie sanders, the president of the united states campaigned with her his approval ratings are going up. she is raising boat loads of money. you have to be fair and honest. the secretary of state is in a strong, emboldened position because she was exonerated in the fbi investigation. >> boy, i'll tell you what. >> you like that. >> i don't know what you are smoking but if she was exonerated, she was crucified by comey. we can get in to what happened but, look, she's been found to have been a liar on everything she told the public and maybe what she told the benghazi committee. she's been -- her entire competency -- she maybe the most
1:36 am
qualified and the least competent person about to get the nomination. >> but most qualified you concede. >> in terms of your resume where you have been. her resume is one series of disasters after another and we find this raises serious questions about what she does. but her integrity, which was already in the tank, is now worsened. >> can i go to a figure? >> my question was about vice presidential picks for donald trump. >> i will get to that. we have to look at this thing. before we can do trump and where he is at on vp, you have to look at the whole thing last week. for the voter it is a disconcerting picture. you have the head of the fbi at 11:00 a.m. on tuesday saying hillary didn't break any laws. while that's on, we have a split screen on tv of the secretary of state, hillary clinton, getting on air force one from the back stairs, president getting on the front stairs. they fly off to charlotte and do this event together. where, in effect, the president put his good housekeeping stamp
1:37 am
of approval on hillary clinton the very day the fbi clears hillary clinton. >> you are saying this is coordinated. >> no doubt it is coordinated. >> come on. >> bill and hillary -- excuse me, bill and loretta lynch on the runway and then this in the paper on the front page of the "new york times" it said hillary will keep lynch. >> doug, let me ask you a question, of the wonderful people that watch this show is it 95 or 100% believe it is orchestrated. 100% of people are good honest people but they have to understand from what we are seeing that the democratic party is consolidating around the secretary of state the republicans remain divided. >> that's true. >> you didn't answer the question. the thing looked rigged is the point of this thing. i believe this is the case and i said it off the air and i will say it to our viewers. why would a democratic administration, headed by barack obama, who has endorsed hillary,
1:38 am
why would that administration take downhillry? why would they indict and ruin hillary. >> that's why they are nominating her. my god she is so wounded. >> they think she can win. >> nobody wants to talk about donald trump. >> we will get there. >> i will start with you. who should he pick and do you like anybody on the short list? >> i said it last week but we didn't have your pleasure of your company on the fourth of july. there is only one person he should pick, john kasich because it gives him the best chance at ohio. >> will never happen. not even close. >> the question is who should he pick. >> does john kasich show up to the convention? >> apparently it is bad blood and they should have healed it up but they didn't so we move on. but that is who he ought to pick. >> newt gingrich. >> if he wants to get 270 electoral votes, that's all that raet l matters now. >> michael flynn. to have somebody from the
1:39 am
military with a strong stand on terror, notwithstanding his position on abortion. >> no way. >> it would help trump. >> why do conservatives say they like him, some of them? >> he is strong on terror. >> curtis lemay. >> a lot of people like him. >> great man. >> on some of the issues because he said he didn't want to talk about the issues be if you are vice president you have to talk about these issues, pat. >> i don't know how real that is. >> who should he pick? >> i don't know. i will give you the criterion. he needs to get the best candidate that will fight for him, has experience in washington, who the press will say, not that i particularly care what they say, who but who will be acknowledged to be a serious person. >> anybody he shouldn't pick? on the short list that you are hearing. he's with governor christie
1:40 am
tomorrow. >> i think christie to me, i think he will pick him because he's been loyal and trump likes yes men around him. he likes people -- >> would you be comfortable with christie? >> it's not what i'm comfortable with. i'm just analyzing the race. >> he is the best insider. he wants to do it. conservative, on-line. >> i'm not sure. he would have to give up the governorship. >> we have an election. >> so would christie. >> came in to much sharper clarity this week and it's a serious one. are we headed toward an election where we are going to have ultimately cynicism run the country? let me finish my point. corruption run amok. this is the question because what we have coming out of the hillary clinton and her enablers in the press is the assumption
1:41 am
1:44 am
quickly, you are already hearing about mike pence. >> just got an e-mail from a friend in indiana whose son works for governor pence who said the governor has six hours scheduled to talk to trump tomorrow. >> it's a done deal for trump. >> interesting. >> you like to jump to conclusions. >> #mike pence in my twitter feed because we have asked for a response. the latest polling goes from the end of june until july 6th.
1:45 am
look at where hillary clinton and donald trump are. i want to put this in to perspective. she spent $43 million in negative ads in battleground states an he spent a little of his own money doing some things and they are four points apart. that is tight. >> the polls that came out at the end of the week had a somewhat bigger margin. second, there's going to be another 25 or 30 million put attacking donald trump on foreign policy. >> that's a lot of money but it's not moving the needle. >> five points is enough to have a substantial victory. it is a close race. the swing states remain close but i'd rather be five points ahead than behind. >> i want to talk about sglb five points hidden trump vote that you have to add on to his number. >> oh, really? >> new voters that are coming out. >> they don't want to admit it. they don't admit it but will
1:46 am
vote for trump. >> do we know anything demographically? we have to get these guys polling. i need a pat and doug poll. >> we are ready. >> i want to ask you about bernie sanders. he will be with hillary clinton on tuesday on the campaign trail. what does it mean? >> it means to me, particularly after watching the platform committee where at the end the clinton people tried to shove down a resolution where the bernie people would agree that change the platform, talk about how great hillary was and they rioted, because the bernie movement is not where the candidate is. he looks like he's prepared to surrender, except he's not going to get a sword or any of his horses. the question remains -- she will say anything to get elected. that is why she's being pushed so far left. bernie, however, has a movement that he doesn't know what to do. that movement is not happy.
1:47 am
>> are you pushing violence? >> why don't you take over moderating? >> i probably should. thank you for recognizing. >> harris, what is happening with bernie. >> this is ridiculous. >> he doesn't know what to do. he is coming to the secretary of state. the real question is what his supporters do in philadelphia. hillary clinton is trying to tamp it down. >> so for a year bernie supporters like the free stuff. if you move the ball on that, you saw hillary clinton offer some college stuff that would be offset. >> they don't trust her. >> two things happened at that platform. one she claims to be against tpp but her delegates voted down a straight out declaration that trump will use on the trade and jobs issue and every idea like taking lobbyists out of the system and dnc they voted that down. we're not done yet and we're going to see what happens with superdelegates but that
1:48 am
movement, he's about to lose any leadership because he's about to crawl in and say i'm going to be a democrat for which he will get nothing. >> let's talk trump because that's where our twitter and facebook are going. gary says trump will skyrocket after the debate. your thoughts? >> we haven't got to the debates. first we have to do the vp and convention. if we can put the numbers back on, 45-40. >> that's a real clear politics average of polls. >> here's the thing. for two months, donald trump has been at 4 on average. he's not moved since may 4th when he became the republican nominee. >> he's spending a ton of cash -- she's spending a ton of cash rather. >> she is -- >> can i finish. >> sorry. >> hillary is ahead of him on the polling and her hope to reconcile with bernie starting on tuesday and get the sanders voters to hold their nose and
1:49 am
vote for her against trump. they will never like or believe her but they are going to try to make trump so radioactive. >> one writes if trump picks general flynn it will be the kiss of death. we don't want a democrat on our ticket. >> that's a thought. >> trump has enough -- there's a point there. his republican credentials are suspect. he may want to get a real republican, i don't know. but i want to say the point you are making, john, which is to say in the states after 43 million, those close states are still close. >> we'll be right back.
1:52 am
1:53 am
doug, take it away. what's going to happen two weeks from tonight or this weekend. >> at the democratic convention the big issue is can hillary clinton keep bernie sanders and his supporters in the tent and can she do what both of my colleagues don't believe she can do, which is to win enough disaffected republicans who don't like donald trump over to her camp to solidify her lead. >> that's not the surprise, although that was interesting. the surprise is -- >> i want to have the honor of announcing our first ever political insiders hour-long special saturday night, july 23rd and sometimes at 8:00, 11:00 saturday eastern. >> it is the four of us, you are hosting, not you, doug. she's hosting. >> i'm happy harris is. >> and these two guys who know more about the democratic party than anybody. >> it's going to be good. >> are getting in to it.
1:54 am
>> we will get some balance in to this. >> we will get in to real insights about what is really happening in the democratic party and in america. i will tell you, in all seriousness, with pat and john, you are going to get the unvarnished truth. >> look, we are going to have a discussion -- the party has two things, jill stein, the green party person just offered bernie sanders her ticket line saying the revolution must go on. many sanders voters believe that. they are against the corruption, the stuff about money, things in politics. the other thing is ideology. hillary clinton who single payer health care has been willing to surrender anything. can a party that is too far left get centralized to win? >> we will be part of that democratic national convention lead up. and we say we are afloat on the sundays of both conventions
1:55 am
because we don't know what will happen. it is the night, the eve of the day before. clarissa says bernie's folders will be disgusted. you talk about disaffected people and where there they go. we will talk about it. july 23rd. that's the announcement. so we finally gave people what they wanted. >> yes. >> they wanted an hour of the insiders. >> it's because of them. >> and our loyal voters -- voters, viewers. they vote with their remop?p?h
1:57 am
my final thought is i let the guys an now it is our special and doug couldn't get it out. you were so busy defending hillary clinton. >> harris, that's the -- >> first one-hour special. >> that's the problem. we are going to have the first one-hour special. i will, of course, explain why hillary will be president. she has another gap to bridge. insider and outsiders. >> no. i'm going to tweet it so it gets out right. >> final thoughts. >> my final thought remains that often what happens in november is determined by what happens in june and july. sometimes august. and this week is a crucial week for mr. trump. the picking of the vp, getting his convention going and having it work for him will be crucial. >> i want to go to the bigger point, two years ago on this set
1:58 am
i said this election would be like 1960 most chaotic since and i said the hope the violence we saw in '60 will not be there. the country is in revolt. we are having terrible problems in our society. this election is still in moti yet to be totally formed. but this is an historic year. >> you set the tone. that's what i'm talking about, doug. i love you. >> i will learn from pat and john. >> i love you all. >> we will roll now in to the next week. this is "fox report" on this sunday. i will be back with you at noon. and right now "legends >> it is monday, july 11th. this is a fox news alert. america on edge. police officers living in fear as violent protests rage across the country following the dallas

massacre of five officers. a chilling new detail we just learned about the killer and his plans for a much bigger attack. >> free to go. another gitmo detainee walking the streets sinks to the obama administration this morning. where the man who spent 14 years locked up was released. >> raising the stakes. donald trump to reveal his running mate a week before the convention kicks off.
