tv   Shepard Smith Reporting  FOX News  July 11, 2016 12:00pm-1:01pm PDT

12:00 pm
thursday night. here they are. brent thompson, worked for the dallas rapid transit department. patrick, the youngest officer killed and new dad. michael krol, and michael smith and -- it's 3:00 on the east coast. an investigation into the murder of the five police officers is rapidly moving forward. >> 170 hours of body camera video to download. that is ongoing. >> and the chief also has a message for demonstrators. you can be a part of the problem or of the solution. >> get out and protest and put an application in. as the chief calls for unity, watching demonstrations across the nation, some against police tactic and some supporting those who put their lives on the line to keep us safe. a week before the republican national convention, the next
12:01 pm
few days could mark the last stand for the never trump movement. let's get to it. >> how about that news conference? first from the fox news desk, the dallas police chief says when it comes to his decision to blow up the gunman who ambushed his officers, we do it all over again. dave brown says officers took 15 or 20 minutes with a plan to co plan. he asked his officers how much explosives material they were using. then he told them he trusted them and said, don't bring down the building. >> we knew from negotiation this was a suspect because he was asking us, how much did he get and telling us how many more he wanted to kill. this wasn't an ethical dilemma for me. >> police say they used a bomb squad robot to deliver that
12:02 pm
explosive device and chief brown says the robot is damaged but still works and vergts are now collecting more than 170 hours of video from officers' body cameras and video from squad car dash cameras all to get a better time line of what happened. chief brown also said he and his family began receiving death threats almost immediately after the ambush. team fox coverage continues now, casey stegall with the latest and rick levanthal. >> we learned that the casualty count was higher than reported. nine wounded, four from the dallas pd and three from the rapid transit police department and two members of the dallas county community college police department. we've also learned that 13 officers used force against the shoot shooter, 11 firing weapons and two using explosive devices. they are reviewing 300 witness statements to see who needs to be reinterviewed and chief
12:03 pm
revealed some officers at the scene still have not given statements to investigators. we've been told micah johnson, the gunman was wounded before he was killed, writing rb in his own blood. they aren't sure what that means and two college stuntsz stayed in one of the buildings overnight because they were too scared to leave. johnson had a large stock pile of bomb making materials in the home that she p he shared with his mother but they don't know if he planted bombs anywhere or planned to. they will not rest until they are sure that johnson was in fact the lone gunman. >> and rick, we're hearing from the mom who was shot while protecting her kids. >> reporter: 37-year-old went to the protest march on thursday night with her four sons because he was concerned about the shootings of two black men by police officers in minnesota and louisiana and said when she heard the gunfire she threw herself on top of her boys to keep them from getting hit and she was shot in the calf.
12:04 pm
>> i'm so sorry they lost their lives. but i'm thankful. i'm so thankful. i had never seen anything like that, the way they just came around us and just guarded us like that. >> taylor couldn't say enough about the dallas police department. she wants this community to be unified and we're seeing evidence of that unity here at the memorial in front of dallas police headquarters that grows larger every hour. >> rick, thanks. i hope you were with us for the last hour. doctors and first responders gave an emotional firsthand account of what happened in last week's attack. i hope you were. casey stegall is live in dallas for us. >> reporter: if you were watching you know it was awfully
12:05 pm
riveting. we had a good sound bite to play in a second but this is the first time by the way we have heard extensively from the first responders. they have just now been able to catch their breath and describe what happened. and i tell you what, the trauma surgeons and e.r. doctors and nurses and other medical stach who staff who treated the injures say it was shocking to say the least, especially those they could not save. one physician said it was almost time for a shift change, people were excited to be going home, clocking out at the end of the day. but then those first calls for help came in and then as more time passed, the gravity of what had actually happened started to settle in. then they describe a all hands on deck scenario. no training, no experience, nothing, could have prepared them for this. listen. >> i understand the anger and
12:06 pm
the frustration and distrust of law enforcement but they are not the problem. the problem is the lack of open discussions about the impact of racial issues in this country. >> reporter: that is dr. williams, surgeon who helped work and save some of the victims, just absolutely heartbreaking. it's hard to keep it together when you hear their stories. >> i'm with you 100% there. and i hear tomorrow the president is coming. >> reporter: right, president obama gets to the big d tomorrow afternoon. where he will attend a guy antd public memorial service scheduled at the symphony here in downtown dallas, a stone's throw away from where this all went down and where those officers lost their lives on thursday. former president george w. bush and first lady laura bush will
12:07 pm
also be in attendance, mr. obama will personally meet with the fallen officers family members to offer the country's condolences, thousands of people are expected to be in attendance wearing blue, showing support for law enforcement. but really, you just see random acts of kindness happening all over the city. someone on social media i saw bought a bunch of starbucks gift cards and passing them out to police officers when they saw them on the streets. it's how americans help one another in times like this. >> casey stegall, thanks. we're hearing from the shooter's family now. the mother says she watched micah johnson transform into a her met after service in the army and both parents spoke to the blaze and the father completely shattered by what his son did. >> i don't know what to say to
12:08 pm
anybody to make anything better. i didn't see it coming. >> he's a good son. >> i love my son with all my heart. i hate what he did. >> father's anguish, the full interview airing on wednesday, 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. eastern time. when crisis erupts in one of our great cities across the nation we often learn about its leaders. and enormous heart ache and difficult challenge can bring out the best or worst in a person depending on who he or she is. over the past few days we heard the words and seen the actions of the dallas police chief dave brown. when reporting from dallas, i learned firsthand how respected he is and on television you may have seen him guide the brave men and women of that department in all dallas really. now the world has been watching and listening.
12:09 pm
and today chief brown spoke of the big picture in our society of the burdens that befall those sworn to protect and serve us. >> i'm a person of faith of i believe that i'm able to stand here and discuss this with you. it's a testament to god's grace and his sweet tender mercy, to be quite honest with you. because what we're doing and what we're trying to accomplish here is above challenging. it is -- we're asking cops to do too much in in country. we're asking them to do too much. every societal failure we put it off on the cops, not enough mental health funding. not enough drug addiction funding, let's give it to the cops. let's have cops chase -- schools fail. give it to the cops.
12:10 pm
being raised by single women, let's give it to the cops to solve that as well. that's too much to ask, policing was never meant to solve all of those problems. and i just ask for other parts of our democracy along with the free press to help us. to help us and not put that burden all on law enforcement to resolve. >> in trying times we learn about our leaders. chief dave brown, the leader of the dallas police and many of you have written inspiration to people watching and listening everywhere. some young girls are doing something to help the police officers in dallas who have been through so much. joanna has more on this. >> it's such a night and beautiful thing. check these fwirls out. they have raised $5,000 at the lemonade stand -- >> what? how much is a lemonade? >> 75 cents, they've been doing
12:11 pm
great and did it for police officers. they came up with the idea once they learned about the shooting that took place thursday night. and reportedly 100 people showed up at their lemonade stand they have brownies and cookies and other treats and the efforts are paying off. one church promised to march the first 1,000 the girls bring in. >> everyone getting involved. >> i love it. >> me too. >> dozens arrested in baton rouge during a demonstration sh. you can be for the demonstration and for the cops at the same time. that story is next on a monday afternoon. let's celebrate these moments... this woman... this cancer patient... christine... living her life... loving her family. moments made possible in part by the breakthrough science of advanced genomic testing. after christine exhausted the standard treatment options for her disease, doctors working with the center for advanced individual medicine at

12:14 pm
police in baton rouge say demonstrations are becoming more violent as out of town protesters arrive. they say they arrested dozens of people yesterday alone. >> put the guns down. >> they told the newspaper that some protesters threw chunks of concrete at officers and hit some of them in their heads. those officers were not badly hurt thanks to helmets and last week police shot and killed alton sterling outside a convenience store. what's happening with the investigation into that shooting, jonathan? >> reporter: i have breaking news to tell you about, the
12:15 pm
daily beast has provided us with a copy of a lawsuit that the owner of this convenience store in front of which the shooting took place last week, the owner of this convenience store is suing the chief of police here in baton rouge claiming that he was illegally detained by officers in the hours immediately following the shooting. the owner of this convenience store is the man who took one of the cell phone videos provided showing the officer involved shooting. another significant development to tell you about, shep, the district attorney who ordinarily would be leading the state investigation into whether any criminal charges should be filed against the officers, he announced today that he is recusing himself from the investigation because of a potential conflict of interest. today he told reporters that he has both a personal and
12:16 pm
professional relationship with the parents of one of the officers involved. so in the interest of avoiding any indication of a potential conflict of interest, he's recusing himself from the case and asking the attorney general from the state of louisiana to appoint a different qualified individual to lead the state investigation. this of course is going parallel to a federal investigation that's being led by the justice department. >> jonathan, the baton rouge officers also weigh in the protest -- >> reporter: he did indeed. he's not recusing himself from those cases and says staff will be going through each case on a case by case basis because there are many protesters who are first time offenders and want to celebrate o who may have stepped on the highway and been arrested for those who were arrested for very serious weapons violations,
12:17 pm
repeat offenders. most of the seriousage taters came in from out of town. by and large he's very pleased with the peaceful way most protesters have conducted themselves as well as the professional way that the police have conducts themselves in maintaining order and safety for all citizens of this city. back to you. >> jonathan serrie, thank you. ahead, louisiana is far from the only scene of demonstrations, we saw marches from many over the weekend. the memphis arkansas bridge shut down in memphis and not all actions were against police. also, the little girls who set out to help the dallas officers. wait until you hear what they got done.

12:22 pm
>> there certainly were and arrest confrontations and spore aidic violence and peaceful protest. 300 were taken into custody. we want to talk about tennessee once again. you showed it there at the top. 300 protesters coast to coast were cuffed and dozens more contained. traffic was shut down after diverting and jumping a barrier to create this scene. city leaders in memphis are asking those who took part in the protest to come to a meeting tonight to voice concerns and start a dialogue on how do unite that city. commuters in philly had no fun today, protesters hit the pavement with their fist and phones and hand made signs to voice outrage during the commute. in atlanta, it's been blazing hot, the mayor and police chief said officers have been working 12-hour shifts during four straight nights of protests and like the protesters they are tired and hot and exhibited great restraint with what they are dealing with.
12:23 pm
new york city sunday protesters marched to union square demanding the end to police brutality. >> we're kpletly outraged what's going on not just in the northern region but down south in general. it's disgusting and apalling. >> it's extremely hurtful. whether we sit at home or go to work or come out here, at least this is our outlet. >> and shep, while some protesters say it's not fair to judge a whole by a few, many said they were moved to act after what they were seeing on tv. >> some against the police violence but in support of the millions of good police officers who work so hard. >> there was a vigil in d.c., we want to take you there with video. it was organized along with lives of some law enforcement officers admitting their worry every day. >> we don't know what's going to happen. and you know when they become a

12:31 pm
the location is berrien county, michigan, right on the st. joseph river and the courthouse itself right on the river there. this is a picture i believe we've gotten from off twitter -- or google? this is i think from twitter from today. there are a number of reports there today but what we have confirmed, this is video out of there. this is from michigan state police, that a number of people have been shot, among them a local police officer, michigan state police confirmed shots fired at the berrien county courthouse in st. joseph's michigan. berrien sheriff's deputy confirmed police and emergency crews are on scene. this is now made reuters wires which are suggesting multiple people shot and we're getting a number of reports -- the commissioner -- local abc channel 57 is reporting a man was taken to jail and took a gun
12:32 pm
from a deputy. and that there he open fire. that's the reporting of brian doorman who works for abc 57, a local station there. further, that the shots were fired at this courthouse about 2:30. it's been right at one hour ago, a county commissioner said a man was on his way to jail and took a gun from a deputy and started opening fire. the commissioner is also talking about the condition of those who have been injured and the first reporting i'll tell you is not good. i'm waiting to get fox news confirmation from michigan state police. it has not yet come. i will tell you local stations, including wzzm television and in addition -- abc 57 and wzzm television are reporting this could be a very serious moment indeed and that there are
12:33 pm
reports that this has ended in fatalities. but as fox news cannot confirm that, i'm not going to give you details of those local reports. you can see the location there right on big lake. here's the courthouse, that's the st. joseph's river. if they were to back out from this google picture, you would see that the st. joseph's river leads directly into the lake and it's just a matter of blocks away. it's a -- it leads directly to it. and it sounds as if this was a one of those things kind of happenings that this man was being taken to jail and somehow as he was being transported or moved in one way or another -- i don't know if he was being moved by hand or guarded along or whether he was in a transport vehicle or something, of those matters i'm not certain yet. i can tell you that the locals are reporting that this man somehow got from a deputy a gun and began firing. we don't know who the civilians are who are hurt. we're led to believe that the
12:34 pm
gunman himself, the person being taken to jail has since been taken to jail and they are processing the scene. so often in breaking news reports the early reports are inaccurate. so i'm going to leave with what we have confirmed by michigan state police and that is at this moment three people are confirmed shot and beyond that, we'll wait for further details from state police there in michigan. we hope to have local coverage and contacts would be helpful. that's coming as we get it on fox news channel. politics now, donald trump says he's the candidate to deal with shootings like those in dallas and minnesota, not hillary clinton. >> i'm the law and order candidate. hillary clinton on the other hand is weak, ineffective and pandering and as proven by her recent e-mail scandal, which was
12:35 pm
an embarrassment, not only to her but to the entire nation as a whole. she's either a liar or grocery incompetent, one or the other. >> donald trump wrapping up a speech about an hour ago. he thanked police officers around the country and said it's time to end the hostility towards law enforcement and said inner cities have been left behind and he would make sure everyone lived in a safe neighborhood. donald trump, will make sure everyone lived in a safe neighborhood. he talked about the original topic of the speech, veterans and called for a complete reform of the va after the scandal over long wait times and cover-ups, that's as odds with some republicans who call for privatizing the va not just reforming it. ahead of trump's speech secretary clinton's campaign put out a statement he saying he has a history of disdain for veterans. she has not responded to trump's comments on the shootings and police. more on the democrats ahead.
12:36 pm
meantime in cleveland, republican leaders are holding very important meet next week's convention and never trump camp may have the final chance to stop the nominee. blake berman covering the meetings in cleveland and first to kirk cameron. what else did he have to say today? >> reporter: you summed it up in the intro here, shep. this is emphatic of support and respect and allegiance with men in blue. he did talk about the violence in the inner city but he was overwhelmingly making the case that he is that strong leader and going to be law enforcement president. and to that extent, he -- the other third of the speech really was attacking hillary clinton when it came to the va, he said a number of things, ten-point plan, a lot of as spirational
12:37 pm
stuff, he'll appoint somebody to investigate fraud and corruption and plans to have a series of investigations of the va and offer up a whole series of changes and reforms. if they block, he said he would use executive power, the type of executive action and authority president obama has been criticized for, it's possible donald trump would use to try to fix the va. watch. >> i'm going to use every lawful authority to remove and discipline federal employees or managers who failure veterans or breach the public trust. >> and again, it was pretty much an attack for hillary clinton for once saying that the va was not as bad as people thought and as well as what he considered to be her completely wrong approach to the way in which the nation's law enforcement needs to be supported. chris christie did the introductions and he's a tough law and order kind of guy as well. >> we've got an update on running mate search. was there something new on that?
12:38 pm
>> reporter: a couple of things are happening. he's acknowledged that his list which was as many as ten last week is down to about five. chris christie, the governor of new jersey was here with him and christie has been vetted and not said whether or not he's been asked anything further but they did have the opportunity to meet today. they didn't actually appear on stage together. that would have been a good photo op for both if he were to be the pick but there are four others. among others they include the lieutenant general michael flynn, who is the former head of the defense intelligence agency, one of the first to raise the alarm about isis and got sidelined by the obama administration. a lot of folks think a military person would bolster trump's arguments but he has said he gets the military better than the generals in the past and a lot of times people say if the top criteria somebody could be dema commander in chief but there's
12:39 pm
more than that. and newt ging rich and mike pence. trump will have a visit with him tomorrow. >> now to meetings i mentioned ahead of the convention. blake is live in cleveland. explain how all of this is going to work, if you could. >> reporter: it is day one of the free convention festivities in cleveland. we're in the convention here in downtown cleveland. the actual convention a few blocks down the road. there are 112 delegates gathering for the platform meetings, this is a document that will be put forward. the values of policy ideas and what they stand for. this could potentially present little bit of a sticky situation for trump if they put forth certain topics in which trump publicly disagrees with. however trump is already one concession today and that is
12:40 pm
with the transpacific partnership trade deal and removed entirely all together earlier today in committee meetings. trump has railed against tpp in recent speeches and then there is the end of the week, few days from now, thursday and friday, the rules committee meetings, those would normally be somewhat mundane but a lot of folks are looking toward that. that could be the potentially the last ditch effort from the never trump folks to potentially stop donald trump. that would be in the form of passing a rule that would allow delegates to unbind and setting up a convention for showdown. however, shepard, that again is 112 delegates. we have looked at that list and analyzed that list and talk to many delegates on that list and that scenario is highly unlikely when you look at that list. >> blake burman in cleveland, an early start. updating breaking news, there has been a shooting at the courthouse there in michigan,
12:41 pm
we're getting further understanding of what's happening and the news is bad. it appears that -- this is -- we're not there. we're relying on wzzm television, which is local abc 57 and others who are quoting police and county commissioners and others county officials who are there and detroit free press. the word there is three people have been shot. it appears what's happened is that this suspect who is being taken away to jail inside the courthouse, somehow got a hold of a gun. the report seemed to indicate he may have gotten it off a deputy. one way or another. i don't know how but the report is that he began firing inside this courtroom. inside courtrooms are first responders and people of court officers. and i'm sad to report to you this hour that two court officers are believed dead this hour, two bailiffs inside the courtroom in st. joseph, berrien
12:42 pm
county, michigan. the suspect got a gun and started firing according to a report two of those are the court bailiffs, court officers there. the other person dead according to employees there, speaking to these outlets is the shooter. so state police have not confirmed those numbers or the status of the shooter for us at fox news channel. they've confirmed only that the shootings have happened. the governor has tweeted asking for prayers there. further reports coming from multiple outlets now and i'm getting a lot of them but the long and short of it, at this moment the reporting seems to be two court officers, in other words officers of the law, bailiffs in the courtroom have been shot and according to local reports killed and the shooter has been shot and killed as well. that is the early reporting out of st. joseph's michigan, along the st. joseph river which leads to the big lake there in berrien
12:43 pm
county michigan, updates as our own people make it there later in the afternoon. two more officers dead this afternoon it would appear. the news continues after this. hi, i'm dominique wilkins. when you have type 2 diabetes, like me, there's a moment of truth. and with victoza®, a better moment of proof. victoza® lowers my a1c and blood sugar better than the leading branded pill, which didn't get me to my goal. victoza® works with your body to lower blood sugar in three ways-- in the stomach, the liver and the pancreas. and while it isn't for weight loss, victoza® may help you lose some weight. non-insulin victoza® comes in a pen and is taken once a day.

i thought i married an italian. did the ancestrydna to find out i'm only 16% italian.
12:46 pm
