9:00 am
>> heather and i are back in one hour. "outnumbered" starts right now. sandra: fox news alert. the countdown is on as donald trump is in the final phase of picking a running mate. this is "outnumbered." i'm sandra smith. here today, harris fullinger in, nationally syndicated radio talk show host, make fan mccain, co-host of "after the bell" on fox business melissa francis, our #oneluckyguy, host of geraldo rivera reports, reporter geraldo rivera. you're outnumbered. >> delighted to be so. sandra: we're about to have a lot of fun. the veepstakes is full on. we might get announcement any day now, any moment. let's get started.
9:01 am
mr. trump expected to make his vp announcement within the next 48 hours we're told. this morning the presumptive nominee fueling speculation as he and some of his family members visited the home of one of the top candidates, indiana governor mike pence. pence appearing with trump at rally in indianapolis where the governor praised trump and slammed hillary clinton. the other top vp contenders said to include new jersey governor chris christie, who reportedly met with trump's family yesterday. and former house speaker newt gingrich, who trump is meeting with as we speak last night trump telling bill o'reilly he narrowed his list to five candidates and but saying he is not trying to build sub spence. watch. >> i'm not doing this for surprises. i'm not doing this for games. i'm doing this because i want to pick somebody that will help me get elected. >> in another interview trump says he needs a fighter as his running mate since he is being attacked from all sides. geraldo, dare i ask you to speculate on who his pick is?
9:02 am
you know him very well. >> dare, dare. he hasn't called me. i'm really annoyed. i think pence is totally competent and acceptable. newt i think i know that sean loves him, sean hannity loves him. he is such a competent person, former speaker of the house of course. presidential candidate in his own right. a little on the old side, i would submit. i do believe i'm the oddball out, not surprise me and not uncommon i believe chris christie would be -- he can't get john kasich. this is too bad. kasich would be the best perfect fit, ohio necessary to donald trump's ambitions. kasich has been so nasty though to trump and so firm he will not be a part of ticket. i think chris christie, the way he decimated marco rubio in the debates, i think he would wipe out any prospective democratic vice-presidential candidate in any head-to-head debate.
9:03 am
he is a fighter and trump says he is being attacked by all sides. i can't think of anyone more competent in a street rumble, assuming that he is not an unindicted co-conspirator in "bridgegate." sandra: meghan, i spoke with newt gingrich, former speaker yesterday afternoon. he is totally up for the job. would accept if offered but i said what do you think is the most important thing for donald trump knowing him as well as you do? one, somebody capable of being president. two, they need to have good chemistry. this is very personal decision for donald trump. has to be somebody he is comfortable working with next four to eight years. >> here is why i like newt gingrich, for number of reasons. architect of modern conservatism for very long time. nothing short on brilliant. he will call donald trump out on some of his incendiary language. he needs traditional republicans feel going forward.
9:04 am
i actually think he is the best pick. sandra: he stood up for your father early on. >> and also against the hispanic judge when comments were made. newt gingrich would be conscience for donald trump. that would ease a lot of concerns for me. i known newt gingrich a long time. love his wife calista. melissa: you feel a lot of times vp pick will be pandering. that he will mellow him out. with newt gingrich he does respect his opinion and listen to him. it is sincere, why does he say that. i don't agree with you when he said that. that trump is actually listening to him. they say about mike pence that is somebody who is conservative and make conservatives feel better. you only feel better if you believe trump is truly listening to the person. otherwise a pander to that group. i agree with you, with newt it looks like he would actually take that advice and listen. sandra: when we heard he met
9:05 am
with mike pence's family, this must be a done deal. now he is meeting with chris christie. harris: reading tea leaves is one thing. when he makes the announcement we'll listen and watch and that is what counts. how he gets together with people up front is what he does. we'll see hillary clinton do it on her side as well. i watched your twitter account, meghan. you tweeted something out that was interesting. retweeted newt gingrich last night saying that donald trump profoundly owes your father and other veterans an apology. i thought that was really interesting. meghan: that is older tweet. harris: he wants to go step in those places with credibility or where others bombast i cannily said not caring whether or not they will support trump. >> he is not caring about political correctness.
9:06 am
not going for diversity move or female move because it would be diverse. harris: paul manafort said they wouldn't want to be pandering and probably wouldn't be a woman and not a minority. >> newt gingrich is older than i am. harris: look at you. you're selling it. >> chris christie is the kind of guy, i understand that it is doubling down. i mean, it is not too old white guys. it is chris christie is flamboyant, fighting sharp elbow guy. harris: do you think? >> what's that? harris: chris christie and donald trump, what do you think? >> too white? harris: no, too much alike. >> alike, white. meghan: has history of going after clintons, chris christie is so dredged up in scandal is popularity numbers are in a all-time low. >> he is slogging his way through "bridgegate." when i said in my remarks earlier, this assumes he is not
9:07 am
unindicted could conspirator, they have gone through great legal gymnastics to be unindicted cospirittores are in "bridgegate." christie says it is not him. if not, i think it is him. sandra: donald trump tied with hillary clinton in three crucial swing states, florida, ohio, pennsylvania. since 1960 no candidate has won an election without taking at least two of those states. according to the "quinnepiac poll," trump is ahead of clinton in florida, 42-39%. a big difference from last month when clinton was leading him there by eight points. in ohio trump and clinton are tied at 41. in pennsylvania trump is now up two points, 43-to clinton's 41%. when it comes to who is more honest and trustworthy, trump wins on that count in all three states. all right, so this is just getting even more interesting. harris: so what is interesting about this is the eight-point swing we saw with hillary
9:08 am
clinton particularly in states like florida. that is really problematic because of dates this happened. while we've been watching, no charge from doj. loretta lynch on the hill. no recommendation after charge from james comey, hearing on hill. you hear the back and forth. it is hurting her to have this stay in the headlines. melissa: absolutely. i thought that was thing most compelling. it wasn't just the lead but how much it flip-flopped by. i was down in florida recently. somebody walked out into the crowd with make america great hat, everyone in the area turned on person and there was this rum bell. there is a lot of divisiveness. a lot of anger out there. people are reluctant, in a lot of battleground states saying they're for donald trump as well. i wonder if support is greater than some people think because you're embarrassed to say it. harris: we had someone on the couch said 5% vote our guest is saying we don't know what that
9:09 am
will be but likely donald trump. shadow vote. >> people embarrassed to the say trump. harris: called it a shadow vote. i think that is interesting. meghan: that notoriously happened in south carolina campaign, people said he wouldn't vote for one guy and he was 15 points up on election day. harris: if he is five points that is outside rcp polling. >> anyone who bets against trump or denigrates his chances will miss the boat as they have throughout the entire primary season. now as to why hillary clinton is down so much, i think there is no doubt going back to what the house majority leader kevin mccarthy said, this whole email scandal, bringing it up, every possible venue, every possible legal venue, every political venue, let's have another hearing on this, that and other thing, and that absolutely preposterously, stupid meeting of the former president and loretta lynch on
9:10 am
the tarmac in arizona absolutely appalling -- sandra: attorney general yesterday watching her testimony and just not answering any of questions. >> i didn't mind that. it is just the drumbeat. it is over and everybody you talk to knows about this email thing. what is the email? there is no crime there. no one is going to be indicted. there was never a grand jury yet being shrunken on it. meghan: she is dumping money into battleground states. $40 million. trump is got four, this is as good as you got? money is not talking in this election the way it once did. >> i agree with that. harris: what is the possibility reopened issue of whether or not hillary clinton lied? melissa: so you heard them laying that out yesterday. they talked about is there a lie, yeah, but anyone who sits out there for that long and testifies for that long, they're going to inevitably make a mistake somewhere and they will go back to that exact same thing where she may have lied but didn't mean to, it wasn't intentional. no intent.
9:11 am
it will be exact same circumstance as before. >> i agree. melissa: i don't think it is worth doing. i don't think the non-stop drumbeat necessarily hurts her that much i think people already think she is -- harris: what is hurting her? melissa: not an enthusiastic candidate. >> i think it does hurt her when trump saying "crooked hillary," "crooked hillary." every, i know that chaffetz sits on this seat and others appear and so filled with righteous indignation over hillary clinton. if you say she is liar long enough, marginal people begin to believe. meghan: bill is hurting her. not just on tarmac. "black lives matter" thing happened a few months ago. like if he has some psychological thing inside of her head he is trying to sabotage her. meeting with loretta lynch is crazy. >> that is crazy. i don't know what he was thinking about. sandra: we'll leave it there. maybe there is something to that. >> psychology? melissa.

house president obama is meeting with mayors, members of academia and civil rights activists to address issue of police violence. he paid tribute to each of the fallen officers by name. he also offered words of support for law enforcement nationwide. >> we know the overwhelming majority of police officers do an incredibly hard and dangerous job fairly and professionally. they are deserving of our respect and not our scorn. harris: the president also included in his remarks the issue of race and policing. >> if we're honest, perhaps we've heard prejudice in our own heads. none of us is entirely innocent. no institution is entirely immune. that includes our police departments. but even those who dislike the phrase, "black lives matter", surely we should be able to hear the pain.

harris: so it is interesting, meghan, because the president and social media and other places was getting criticized and mentioning, "black lives matter" in such an important memorial speech. blm reached nearly 100,000 signature threshold to get response from white house. the timing was questionable too. meghan: obviously black lives matter is becoming a huge movement and discussion escalates in the country. for memorials i am for mon norring the dead and keeping it at that he can have a conversation maybe later today at a press conference but i thought it was inappropriate but not enough for me the get outraged. harris: geraldo. >> i'm kind in the same place meghan is. no doubt, that many, many black families are fearful when their children are out at night of the police than the crooks. made that very clear and i knew it before we know it before, people from big cities like this one. but this was a specific act of terrorism that killed five officers and i wish, as meghan suggests, that the president had focused his remark on the racial terrorist who did -- >> right. >> it was religious terrorist in florida. racial terrorist in dallas. killed these five people. concentrate on five victims and later in the day you know, at another event or at this event today recognize the undeniable reality that so many black people feel that the cops are their enemies. harris: i see you nodding along. melissa: i thought it was really inappropriate place to do that. i almost felt like he forgot what he was there for. he started out strong. we won't know the motive of this person. he said he was upset at white people. he wanted to kill white people, especially white officers. he did just that.

to bring up at funeral of these men who were killed out there on duty in the name of enforcing the law, they were killed because they were white and because they were police. to bring up the idea of jim crow and "black lives matter" at their funeral, seemed like glossing over why they were killed in their time. not that his remarks were wrong. they weren't appropriate for the setting. sandra: he condemned the act when he was there. meghan: not unexpected. our first black president. racial tensions are high. >> absolutely. meghan: cover at length on my radio show. people are very upset, people in the african-american community feel there is double-standard black man riding in a car than white man. first black president. don't find it appropriate but i'm not surprised. >> amen. harris: saw happening with chief david brown down in dallas which i thought was really interesting take on things. he said look, one of the few times we have seen him last few days offering words of wisdom. i want to hire more young men in
