trump originally planned to make the announcement at a news conference this morning. he replaced that plan after the terror attack in france last night. and said he will brief the media tomorrow morning. let's go to john roberts live outside trump tower in new york city. >> reporter: this is not the way donald trump wanted this to unfold. a lot of his supporters, music and fanfare, didn't think it was appropriate given horrible news coming out of france, and postpone it against a hard deadline of noon today to file papers to withdraw from the governor's race that appear on the ballot so instead of letting that happen and having that be the announcement he wanted to get ahead of it so that is why

he put it out. the first time in history a running mate has been announced on twitter. mike pence said i am honored to join donald trump and work to make america great again. mike pence is rocksolid. we heard from scott walker who tweeted out mike pence would be an outstanding vice president, he is a good man and a good friend, scott walker, talking about the campaign, not the past tense. and coulter not a big fan of mike pence after citing adjustments to the religious freedom act in indiana, a day ago saying i hope pence is not true. megan mccain, frequent guest on "outnumbered" tweeted mike pence makes me fall asleep. hearing from the clinton campaign, the response is what

you would expect, tweeting a video that says think trump is divisive? meet his running mate, the most extreme pick in a generation. two points of convergence, convergence, his signing of the religious freedom act, signing new restrictions on abortion which would disallow because of a disability, he posed no child left behind, common core, voted against troubled asset relief program. divergent, mike pence was supporter of the transpacific partnership which donald trump opposes and says he would pull out of on day one of his presidency and on the muslim been, he called that offensive and unconstitutional. the two of them you never want your running mate to agree on everything you do but as ronald reagan said, somebody who agrees with you 70% of the time is your friend, not your enemy.

>> appreciate you breaking the news for us. the former press agent to jack kemp in 1996, you were right on time with your expertise and experience. what are your thoughts on this story? >> donald trump demonstrated two things, he understands the need to unify the republican party and the conservative movement. mike pence reflects the most essential elements of the modern conservative government, he is a traditional conservative closely aligned with those on the hill like paul ryan, supported ted cruz, one of the congressman on the forefront of supporting the tea party, understand the grassroots movement of the conservative party which is essential for trump to gain victory in november and the final piece of the whole thing is as an evangelical he understands and speaks a language donald trump just doesn't necessarily understand or speak. it helps with a key constituency

that is an integral part of any sort of roadmap to victory. on top of that, he is a governor of a fairly important state which donald trump won decisively, he also was a congressman for six terms on the foreign relations committee, how important terrorism and other national security measures are and the number 3 head of the republican conference in the house, part of the leadership that pushed a lot of progress tax-cut free-market type of ideas that a lot of republicans are hoping will define the trump message. >> his foreign-policy is described as like reagan. what do you think in the wake of this horrific attack, what will they highlight as his strength on foreign-policy if he is on the ticket? >> foreign-policy will emerge

and remain a major issue, pulling behind jobs in the economy fighting terrorism is the number 2 concern. pence served on a committee where he saw amazing amounts of information, top-secret intelligence and he has clarity of vision. you see it in the nominee donald trump where it is a bipolar fight sometimes. a civilizational struggle which clarifies the approach and that is what you will see from a trump ticket. contrary to clinton where you see her new one thing what happened in this slow and steady approach to fighting global terror you have seen from the obama administration and reagan called the soviets the evil empire, he defined the enemy and was able to beat it. this is the approach from a trump pence ticket. andrea: charlie gasparino. does he have the toughness to do what newt gingrich would have

trump takes advice. there is this open question, will trump listen to smart intelligent counsel or will he do everything based on his own instinct and personal preference? this is a very important indicator of the type of strong, good judgment trump as a candidate is able to make, pence not being his personal first choice, understanding is a candidate, can't always do what you want to do, there is a larger consideration, took a lot of good counsel into account by choosing that. >> pence's numbers are pretty bad in indiana, 33 other governors, my question, part of the reason for his unpopularity is the record of winning, trump has a problem according to polls, do you think pence being on this ticket was a missed opportunity for trump to get
