saying from now on we'll implement major setbacks to any type of big event we have in the future? >> reporter: no. the first is take airport. we saw the istanbul bombings at the airport there. every time you try to put a cord don off means that people congregate further away. so the idea that you just have a further cordon is a problem. it doesn't really tend to work. we see that at airports where you have that at the check-in gate, haved outside-doesn't help. here they're asking how this truck was able to get so close to the people who were involved. it was supposed to be a pedestrianized area, and yet it was able to very slowly drive up to the crowd before accelerating quickly. that's a question the police are asking, holiday was this truck able to get so close, but soft targets, concerts, music venues, sports arenas. this is where al qaeda, isis, other terrorist groups, are folk

can you -- focusing. you look at their propaganda and their magazines they're suggesting you push for that. they suggest using cars. so that's may well be a tactic we'll see in the future. >> thank you. ahead, we'll take you back live to nice, france, for an update on the scene and look at how nations across europe are now responding to this attack. stay with us. if you love crab and who doesn't then seize the day already. crabfest is back at red lobster with so many kinds of crab and the most crab dishes of the year. so dive into whatever floats your crab-loving boat. like crab lover's dream. crack open tender snow and king crab legs, and twirl creamy crab alfredo. or try the new alaska bairdi crab dinner. sweet and straight from the icy waters of alaska, you've gotta get it... to really get it. but it won't last forever, so hurry in.

12:52 pm
saying he might make a last-minute switch to gingrich or chris christie? >> i didn't buy it then. it now appears there was a real possibility, and think about that for just a quick second. the idea, here's mike pence, he obviously had been told he was the pick, he flies in a private jet to new york, sitting in a hotel room, and apparently trump was reconsidering, and of course, pence was up against a deadline of noon today in indiana for toe announce whether or not he would be running for governor or take his name off so he could runt for vice-president. it's another interesting chapter in the trump c and gingrich sait been told yet he was not the guy so there was maybe something in the works. what do you make of the pick? the whole basis of trump's campaign was kind of like he was not this traditional republican and the even republicans didn't want another traditional republican and yet mike pence seems to be the epit me of the
12:53 pm
traditional republican. >> yeah, but look. with trump at the top of the ticket you have enough of a disrupter. you don't need two disrupters on the ticket. here's what i think. it helps in terms of securing the base. still a lot of republicans, a lot of conservatives, especially social conservatives, who have real questions about donald trump, and clearingly he felt job one at this point is to reassure them, that he is one of them. now, that is what this choice of pence will. do what it doesn't do is doesn't help him a lot with minorities, young people, with mood -- moderates, suburban, republican women, who find them way to right of them. this guy is very hard-lined when it comes to gay rights, comes to abortion, planned parenthood. as i say that will sit well with the republican base but not so well with the undecided voters that trump is also going to need. >> how does it square with the presumptive nominee?
12:54 pm
they disagree on those issues, gay marriage, abortion. he thinks that trump -- when trump came out with the muslim ban he said it was offensive and unconstitutional. and has come out a number of times against donald trump. how does that square up in. >> also on very differentwave lengths when it comes to trade. pence is a big supporter of the pacific deal, of nafta, of a variety of deals. there are always differences between the top of the ticket and the running mate, no two politicians are exactly alike, and i suspect pence will say what other candidates in the same situation have said, which is trump's the presidential candidate. he is -- what he says is the policy and i'll go along with it and make for a couple of embarrassing dayses but nothing so hugely different they won't be able to reconcile that. >> mike emanuel brought up the poll about hillary clinton and she went after mike peps hard

but this e-mail seasonal is starting to take its toll on her. these numbers coming out where are just from last october to now, a third of the voters thought this e-mail scandal wasn't a big deal. now half of voters think it's a major deal. that's significant. >> there's no question she has taken a hit. it was not a legal indictment by fbi director comey but it what a political indictment of her extreme carelessness, her negligence, as he put it, and the number of times the statements she has made over the last year plus have been contradicted by the facts. so, there's no question. how look the polls right now, and they're basically tied nationally. it isn't so much that trump has gone up since the last set of polls. that's halt she has gone down and clearly the fbi -- again, not a legal indictment so that's the good news but this political indictment has hurt her. >> only have other few seconds left. want to get your pulse on being in cleveland and the security

atmosphere. clearly a very secure event but in the wake of france are you seeing things ratchet up as awe walk around, kind of a different feel than it was? >> no, not in the last 24 hours. i haven't been over to -- we're here at the convention center is not where they're holding the convention. this is the work space for media, several blocks away is the a reena. i have -- the arena. i'll go there tomorrow and security will be very tight, where trump and pence and all the other key figures will be. >> chris wallace, thank you. and we'll be right back. more news on the news deck. think fixing your windshield is a big hassle? not with safelite. this family needed their windshield replaced
