overnight. several have been arrested. tied to the truck terror that murdered 84 people. we're live with the very latest from france. >> then donald trump ends the suspense and says indiana's governor is his pick for vp. >> donald trump understands the anxiety and the aspiration of the american people like no leader sense reagan. and he has given voice to that. >> what pence do for the trump ticket? "fox & friends" starts right now. and good saturday morning, everyone. a fox news alert. we start with chaos in turkey an attempted military coup results in a night of explosions and gunfire. leaving dozens dead more than a thousand injured. [gunfire]

the turkish government insisting it's still in control this morning. the world is on edge as turkey is one of our critical allies. >> senior fellow at the london center for research lieutenant colonel tony shaffer joins us this morning to unravel what is going on. great to see you. what should we make of this. >> well, look, this is adding layers of complexity to an already complex situation. i talked to my pentagon sources overnight. our facilities there are safe. our personnel are safe. with that said, situation is far but predictable and precise regarding the fact that we are attempting right now, as you know, to go about a major offensive against isis. turkey has been one of those allies being a nato ally that we have been counting on. and erdogan has been playing both sides dependence the middle. this only makes our job of trying to fight isis far more complex. >> lieutenant colonel tony shaffer you say that the facilities are intact. what does this do for our relationship with turkey? does it change things?

>> tbd. erdogan has not been the best ally in this. he kept the back door open for a isis for a long time. i don't think it's completely closed. he allowed for isis to resupply, reman itself. and they have not allowed to use our military facilities there against isis. it's been a bit of a turn around. erdogan has been playing all sides against the middle. moving the country towards a more is islamic centric governance much like president morsey in egypt was attempting to do before he was thrown out. this may be a response to that sort of trend that was going. other thing, erdogan reached out to putin recently trying to make nice with him. plus he has made an agreement with the israelis. he literally is kind of all over the map right now. i'm not sure that we can actually predict what's going to come out of all of this chaos. >> there was a number of sources over the past many months that predicted this. it was all out there. how are people left so flat

footed? >> we know this administration tends to manage national security through a policy of wishful thinking. john brennan is not doing miss job. i talked to jim woolsey about this recently former director of cia. they are not focused on what they should be. things like this get under the radar because we are not looking. the other thing we have to understand here is president obama and company are very much for prime minister erdogan's trend towards allowing him to basically consolidate more power. and that's what's going on here. that's what will come out of this. if erdogan survives which looks like he will. he will become more draconian in his approach to consolidation of power. dare i say this may be the beginning of the end for the turkish democracy. >> so the administration was caught unaware. they had no idea this was happening. but their first instinct was to support erdogan as you noted their second was to support morsey over mubarak. is it fair to say their

instinct is to support the islamic autocrat over the secular leader. >> that's been the trend. trended toward despots every time you turn around. i hate to be so bluntly there are clear issues here. we damaged our relationship with egypt by supporting morsey over al see elsie is i being the current president. basically preserve that democracy. i think that's what happened here in turkey with that said, i think erdogan will use this to consolidate his power and double down and triple down in going about trying to eliminate any opposition. >> you are absolutely right. he has locked up reporters for speaking out. knocked off the top part of the military brass and last night very forceful marriage about the cleric living in the poconos running things. explain that side of the story which is crazy. >> well, this cleric in

pennsylvania has been, according to the prime minister to erdogan, the bane of his existence, this guy, according to erdogan has been the shadow guy organizing a parallel construct to use the term that the turkish have been using in the media if you believe this he is the boogie man. this individual in pennsylvania was initially an ally of erdogan. they had basically a separation of ways. but the premise is that, you know, this guy was able to orchestrate this large revolution from the united states. and i think you are probably going to see erdogan call for his arrest and return to turkey based on everything i have heard at this point. >> wow, lieutenant colonel tony shaffer thanks for being with us this morning. >> thanks. >> 6 minutes after the hour. john huddy live on the ground there in istanbul. you were there in the aftermath of that awful terror attack that happened in the airport.

how much unrest is going on in turkey right now that you can sense and feel for yourself? >> well, it was definitely an uneasy feeling, just to give you an idea, anna, clayton, and tucker, when we arrived at the airport on the asian side of istanbul. they were not allowing any vehicles in or out. we had to lug all our gear off the airport premises, pass tanks and semi-trucks that were blocking the entrance to the airport to try to get a cab. i mean, it was just absolutely [inaudible] very chaotic and certainly a lot of tension in the wake of what happened overnight as you guys were just talking about and as we have been seeing the video. the clashes, the fighting, including, i believe, and we have video and the sound of an attack or at least an explosion in the country's parliament building overnight again in ankara. listen to this.

and that was among all of the other clashes that happened not only in ankara and that's where some of the heaviest fighting was, horton, gun ships firing at protesters on the ground. in fact, a friend of mine owns a restaurant in ankara and he sent me video and pictures while it was happening. he and his family hunkered down in their home. there was tens of thousands of protesters that hit the streets here in istanbul in taksim square also fired upon by military gun ships. these were pockets of military and police forces that staged this attempted coup. this morning erdogan arrived at the airport saying the coup was failed. the government was back in control. we know that at least 161

people were killed during the overnight fighting. more than 1400 others wounded. more than 2800 military and police personnel taken into custody. whether it ends now or not we will see. but i can tell you this, it is certainly a contrast between last night and now overlooking -- beautiful day. for now things have calmed down. back to you. >> john huddy live for us in istanbul, turkey thanks, john. >> isis claiming responsibility for the vicious attack in nice, france that killed 84 innocent people. calling the truck driver a soldier of terror. >> this as five people have been arrested so far in connection with that deadly rampage. >> amy kellogg is live in nice with all the breaking details. good morning. what you can tell us, amy? >> hi, anna. i can tell you that three days of mourning in france kick off today. i'm standing on the promenade just about 200 yards from where that truck finally came to a halt

after the driver was shot dead by police but only after he killed 84 innocent people who were celebrating bastille day. this isis claim of responsibility is interesting because people were wondering who this driver was. but, the wording of this statement, which was put out by the agency which typically carries isis communications that he was a soldier of isis. they don't even name him. which leads some people to ponder whether it's isis claiming responsibility for him or him having claimed his allegiance at some point to isis. that, we still don't know. police have released very little information about mohammed -- apparently not a religious man. never shown any signs of radicalization. didn't go to the mosque. didn't observe ramadan. according to neighbors was a drinker. had been watched for

domestic violence. had been divorced from his wife and had three little kids. never got on to the radar screen of intelligence services for terrorism related issues. he had a petty criminal record. in the meantime, this raid in nice netted the detention of three people, members of his so-called entourage. yesterday, another friend was picked up and his ex-wife is being held. these people are just being held for interrogation as police try to find out what sort of associations he had. now, memorials are springing up spontaneously all along the promenade and other parts of the city. we keep hearing more eyewitness accounts which are incredibly gripping. we hear people talking about their guilt having nearly escaped death and running for their own levees and now having survivors' guilt. they don't understand how

jim, good to see you this morning. >> pleasure. >> so, should americans take heart in the fact that president erdogan appears to be back in control of turkey? is that good or bad? >> i don't think it's particularly good. president obama has been backing him for a long time. i thought one of the more interesting things this is obama calling for the democratically elected government of turkey. anyone watching knew it was anything but democratic. they threw journalists and opposition in jail. it was largely corrupt. so erdogan has been consolidating power. he is a bad guy. is he an islamist. and unsurprisingly, he is obama's ally. so i don't think it was good. it would have been nice if the military performed its natural role as a break on the islamic breaks in tendencies but that doesn't seem the case. president speaking out yesterday. i want to get your take on

what the president said how we are going to win this thing. >> contrasts to these terrorists who only know how to kill and destroy, we're going to win this fight by building. by never giving up on diplomacy. >> we're going to win it appeared never giving up on diplomacy. how is that going to happen? >> i don't know. i haven't met the isis ambassador or the boko haram -- not appropriate for obama no be talking about fighting terror. isis claiming responsibility in nice happens because president obama has let them fester in iraq and syria. he created the vacuum by cutting and running from iraq when we should have stayed to mid wife that democracy and he has failed miserably in any attempt to prosecute a war, to cut down the black flag, to end the caliphate and to stop that as a recruiting magnet and a pride and joy of the islamist and jihadist world.

since you are closest, clearly hillary clinton has more experience with foreign policy than donald trump. but he has a clearer vision. he is just not for islamist leaders and she along with the president and secretary of state are backing erdogan who is a self-described islamist. what matters? experience or vision? >> most important, tucker, is the fact that we need to stand with france. an attack against france is an attack against our country as well. secretary clinton's position which is very, very clear is we are one with france. secondly, i has been, secretary clinton. >> that doesn't mean anything we are one with france? you make your are facebook page red, white, and blue like who cares? >> this is not over there boy. over there, boy. this is a radical movement. this is not a nation against a nation. donald trump doesn't understand that. >> what kind of radical. how voters are feeling in a couple of months, if perhaps, there are any more attacks. >> response is muddied. i agree with that. scott, you have got to wonder about the idea that we were sold on 8 years ago. the rest of the world loves obama. they will like us more as a result and the world to be more peaceful long term because of that. that has not worked out that way. >> first of all, that's a very american century or dc centric view of the world if you elect the right person we will all live happily ever after. that's not true with barack obama. or george w. bush. who wins in november. i think what we are seeing though is the way you described it who is better able to handle a situation like, this voters are saying we're not confident with either one. sure, hillary clinton has this experience, but we're not sure that her instincts are good. we like a lot of donald trump's instincts but we are not sure he can execute and that creates a scary situation. that unsettled nature is

part of reason we are having such a volatile political season. >> mr. mayor, give me the talking points on governor pence. some are saying is he milk toast. democrats are saying is he dangerous. flat out scary. how scary? >> what's amazing he is scary to the people of the indiana he wasn't going to get reelected. donald trump sent this man a lifeline, thank god. one thing we can count on with governor pence is he will fight against the lbgt community. go against them. >> gay hater? >> we know he will be able to forget about isis is he going after the lbgt community and going after them hard. 13 years in congress you know how many laws he passed? none. >> not effective warrior. >> effective for donald trump. >> dangerous but ineffective. you can rest easy out there. >> we know he is a tea party founder. is he right for donald trump and he reassures us that he and donald are one and the same. >> interesting. a little preview of what's

the -- people could athaj on. also, he took heat from some conservatives on his handling of the religious freedom bill and so some say that his, you know, backbone isn't as strong as some portray it to be. i do think that his relationships in congress, the credentials that he brings to this ticket are helpful. and we will see today how trumpresents this. remember, yesterday he sent out a tweet. he postponed the announcement. the rollout of this whole thing has been pretty muchy botchy. we will see how they present themselves today. >> botchy. quickly, trump is a nationalist and outline is still becoming clear i'm wondering do you think is he still on the same page as pence. >> of course not. john kennedy and linden johnson. vice presidents are often picked for reasons. maybe mike pence helps in the mid west which is an important area for donald trump. he probably assures some of the never trumpers in congress that maybe donald

one of the conventions could be a target? >> well, that's a real possibility. either this convention or the next convention but there has been a highly coordinated level of security plans that have been going on for over a year. coordination with -- led bay the secret service. i'm confident that cleveland's prepared and we will be able to deal with any scenario that comes up. >> okay. kind of walk us through what type of preparations have been made the concrete barriers have sprung up in cleveland hours after that horrific attack that happened there in france and that there are 3,000 security personnel working the convention. what other precautions are being taken? >> well, there are just 3,000 federal employees here. most of them law enforcement from various different agencies. on top of that we have thousands of officers. we don't want to disclose the actual number. but thousands of officers from outside of our own police department as well as

over 500 local law enforcement officials. there has been highly coordinated plan that has been going on. we are prepared. we have all of our military on sight. barriers are in place and we are really excited about hosting these delegates. >> what many would call divisive rhetoric on both sides and protests on both sides turn i have lent over the past several months, how would you compare these conventions one in cleveland about to kick off to years' past as far as security concerns go? >> well, i mean, everything that's been happening within our country for the past two years, there has been a heightened level of, i think, frustration by people who feel they have been marginalized. there has been poor police and community relations last couple of years. couple high profile shootings. people are on edge. top it off. we have our presumptive nominee who is, i think, spoken to the heart strings of some and alienated a few. so, people are going to be

erdogan was the problem. this is only one person to blame for this coup and it's the president of turkey he has taken one of the most successful muslim nations of the 20th century and turned it or tried to turn it into fundamentalist state. so this coup if he is a real clear he is the person to blame for this taken. >> dr. gorka get specific on that. when we hear the word democracy, we think about democracy as we know it here in the united states. >> right. >> how different is his government? >> okay. turkey itself is very special. turkey used to be the optimum empire. it put its money on the wrong hold thought austrians

and germans would win. when it loses ataturk says the only way we can survive this defeat is become part of the west. he seculars the empire. separates mosque and state. he says we are now a republic and says you can be a muslim but islam can have nothing to do with running this country. he was successful. he built amazing legacy in the last decade erdogan who is a muslim brotherhood guy said know we need to have theocracy. he brings back religion into politics. he puts -- he intimidates the military. he imprisoned the best generals of the turkish army, including the form everywhere chief of the joint staff on trumped up terrorism charges and as a result he kind of created his own thief dom. he built a crazy palace straight out of north korea. this is guy out of control. he wasn't a good guy.

putting the u.s. is n. a tough spot. dr. gorka had a great comment the fact that, you know, this current president, is he the problem. so, it does require, i think not just the u.s. but others to say okay you remember nato. what about when you go rogue. how do we defend that? >> why wouldn't it be really simple? we support secular readers in the region and not islamist leaders. if that is the guide post for our foreign policy, wouldn't things work out a little better? >> they would work out a lot better, tucker. it could be that simple we are not going to continue to consider an islamic state, hard line islamic state as part of the democratic alliance. but, see how john kerry, hillary clinton, and barack obama would react to that. so, all the more reason of the importance of this election is not just supreme court, it's not just appointments and policies and legislation. it's our place in the world and we face a very clear

distinction between what hillary clinton would do, which is surrender to these thugs and donald trump's which would say no way. >> governor, as we have seen from the clinton campaign in the past. following any terror attack that happens in the west, what we see from them is you need a steady hand and that steady hand is hillary clinton and it's not donald trump. how does donald trump explain that away and will we start to see him do even more of these more measured speeches using teleprompters and things like that? >> well, how steady is hillary's hand kept the world from rocking? the reset in russia? that was a steady hand. boy, that worked out great. syria, lebanon, egypt, iran, name me a place where that steady hand has been anything other than basically a hand that has gone numb. a numb hand is steady. but you don't need a hand that is numb. you need one that knows how to run the controls. hillary doesn't. the one thing we have learned over eight years is she is not competent to be president. even if she was, we can't

trump and some of the things you say are accurate and that's probably fair. only reason trump succeeded only one paying attention to working people in the country? why wouldn't hillary clinton feel that message. >> i have to tell you this campaign going to be based inevitably on the economic issues. i'm very concerned as a democrat about our party's unwillingness to challenge frontally the disparities that have been created by the trade laws nafta, china trade and new transpacific partnership. i think that's a serious weakness in the democratic party's position. bernie sanders tried to correct it. it didn't happen so. donald trump has an area to exploit there that's pretty wide unless something else emerges. >> hedge fund guys don't like it. maybe that's why. here is what john podesta said billion pence most extreme pick in generation. donald trump has doubled down on some of his most

a fox news alert now. turkey in turmoil this morning. the key u.s. al lay in the middle east. in a state of instability. and we have an amazing panel to get to right now. we have a military panel. our general panel this morning, we want to bring in lieutenant general michael bar barrow. william boynton. and, of course, we have richard newton all joining thus morning to weigh in on the developments overnight. general newton, i want to start with you, the president jumped right in on this and threw support behind the president of turkey erdogan. was that the right move? >> well, first off, the turmoil in turkey, i think, has caught us by surprise. key ally, of course we have air base there and so forth. i think it's going to be a challenge there for us now as erdogan tilts obviously towards islam. i think that will be tested. i think the president

probably had no other choice than to support him. again, the challenge is going to be as erdogan tilts away from secular leadership to more islamic. i think that's very troubling for us in an already complex region but also our fight against isis. turkey is key and will remain key. >> what was the response of the obama administration the right one? >> well, clayton, i think it was the only response they could make. is he a nato ally. and despite our dissatisfaction with him, i think it was the only response we could make. at the end of the day, i think it's going to hurt and not help the fight against isis. you know, let's not kid ourselves. erdogan has been a part-time ally in this fight against isis. he has several priorities. first remove assad from power and second contain the kurds. a distant third is taking actions against isis. he has been accused and

there is evidence that he has been complicit in the flow of foreign fighters south and flow of resources north. so, this will strengthen his hand at home, probably double down on his strategy. it will not be helpful to this fight against isis. >> great point by general bar barrow. general boynton to this point there were signs that once we thought this hedge against islamic fundamentalism in that region seems to be unraveling, is that the case? is that the way you see it? >> well, i do. i actually think you are going to see a the love turmoil in turkey now as a result of the failed coup. and, remember that erdogan has played both ends of this, erdogan has also been complicit in boot legging oil, the black market oil that has made isis wealthy as a matter of fact. he has complicit in that. there is also evidence that there had been some isis staging areas and potentially training areas that are across the border

to run for re-election as governor of indiana and did they -- did this leak come out of governor pence's camp to sort of force donald trump's hand? >> came from somewhere. i don't know that it forced his hand. here is the difference between this ticket and like the palin pick, for example. this was a situation where trump really had three pretty good choices. any throw of those guys could have been -- could be vice president. they are guys who could sit in the chair and say yeah that guy could be president. it was not like he was forced into a bad decision. >> were they trying to backtrack it. there was reports that there was backtracking going on to maybe get out of this. was trump checking with his lawyers to switch it out? >> this is a guy with three great choices. wanted to make sure at the last second he had christie appealing and others appealing. wanted to push it at the very last second and make the right choice. >> this is the right choice reassures establishment there is an adult in the room. >> and american voters and swing voters. >> are the people who run the republican party for the past 30 years happy about this? are the bushes happy about

rnc. outside what we can -- as far as we can tell, the press are nearing completion. they have got these jersey barriers popping up in the middle of major intersections, the idea, of course, these were going to be here before the nice attack. the idea generally is to stop a truck bomb from getting close, now, of course, it would also be what would deter a nice style attack. we are also seeing a hard perimeter go up. they have got these fences 8 feet tall. they are supposed to be tough to scale because you can't really grab on to anything. the problem though, according to rnc officials i have spoken, to they are just too close to the building like that one where stuff is going to be going on. the reason that the zone, the event zone is only 1.7 square miles instead of the 3.5 square miles that they would have wanted which would have pushed the fences back a little bit. the aclu sued. they thought the protesters and demonstrators were going to be too far away. they won the lawsuit.

[explosion. >> there was quite a bit of fighting in ankara. in fact, a friend of mine showed me video that he took of a helicopter gun ship opening fire at something on the ground presumably, you know, maybe police or other forces. the coup started late last night. it was launched by pockets and military and police factions. on basically the general public ordering a mandatory curfew. but supporters of president erdogan took to the streets. tens of thousands not only in ankara but also in istanbul in sax sim square to -- taksim square to show support. opened fire on some of those protesters again 160 people killed. more than 14 others

wondered. at this point earlier today turkish president erdogan was on a seaside vacation. he was out of the country when this coup was launched. immediately came back and arrived at the airport earlier this morning. supporters went into the airport there. again, he said that the coup was a failed attempt and that those responsible would be brought to justice and would be dealt with harshly in the harshest way, he said. this as we're also hearing that other members of the coup or at least commanders that tried to launch this and were part of it are being rounded up at this point. and that will likely continue. at this point we are hearing at least 2800 both military and police personnel have been doe tand, have been arrested in connection with this failed coup attempt. and at this point things have calmed down in ankara. my friend says that the streets are empty there. here in istanbul, again, it's quite a contrast of scones. a beautiful day. people on the bostras, tour

now to discuss all of this our old friend lieutenant colonel oliver north. good morning. so to turkey first. >> why don't you guys ever have me on -- tucker, why don't you have me on on a saturday morning when people get up, there has got to be some saturday when there is good news and there is not much today. >> there hasn't been. we have had an 8 year run of bad news. the administration -- >> -- saturday mornings you do. >> that's what we specialize in. the administration came out almost immediately in support of president erdogan in turkey. why would the u.s. government issue support, public statements of support islamist auto craft. >> they don't seem that way. let's start with that ever since erdogan got to be president. he has purged the military. he has taken over the courts, home intelligence service and basically things up upside down. today's military in turkey

is now about 30% secular along the old ata turk model if you will. 50% islamist therefore backing erdogan and 20% gulan, he is in bethlehem, pea. he has been wedded to this guy since the beginning. he is not a friend of america. that does not mean that america is out overthrowing governments we don't like or don't like us. the bottom line of it is the folks who staged this coup led by junior -- the chief of staff of the military was taken hostage in this. when the coups work in places like this and they have worked before in that part of the world, it's usually the boss that takes over, if you will. and then there is an election held like what happened with mubarak taking charge, with elsie is el-sisi being elected. one offered gone's muslim

buddies. bottom line is the united states is never going to back the overthrow of a democratically elected government. we just don't do that bottom line of this one is, this is not a good news story because erdogan is not a friend. the coup has apparently failed. gives the impression that fighting is not yet over. but the government appears to have gotten the upper hand. >> democracy but not democracy certainly as we know it here what happens in erdogan survives this long-term? >> well, look it, there is no doubt this guy is going to become increasingly repressive. autocratic already. authoritarian double down as a consequence of what happened there it's bad news for nato. bad news for united states. major intelligence failure. we had absolutely no idea it was going to happen i have been on the phone with folks over there who know what is going on. they say, look, this is not going to end well for the folks who pulled the coup.

it's not going to end well for the united states in this part of the world. quite frankly the big winners in all of this are the kabul that's now been put together between assad in syria, putin in moscow and of course the ayatollahs in tehran. >> turkey has long been seen as this hedge against islamic fundamentalism secular hedge against. this where do you see this relationship going forward and can we count on that any longer? >> this is bad news for nato. erdogan would not allow nato to use the insulate air base that we built until about this time last year. this war against isis has been running since essentially 2014. he didn't let us use the northern entrance, if you will, to fight against when we went into iraq and part of iraqi freedom back in 2003. the fourth infantry division. that's when he began running the show over there as prime minister.

streets of turkey it's one of our most allies in the middle east, playing a key role in our fight against isis. >> that's for sure. what does this mean for us and for our foreign policy. fox news contributor rick grenell joins us now. good to see you this morning, rick. the world seems to be collapsing, certainly it's chaotic. what are the effects for us of this coup? >> well, lack, you know, so far i think that president obama had the right measured response. because, turkey is a nato ally. he was -- president erdogan was elected freely. there was some questions about the election. but we said that the elections were free and fair and i think that what we have to be able to could -- erdogan has been moving toward the islamists.

taking turkish policy uncomfortable for the united states and allies like israel. picked fights with every single side, every single country of the syrian conflict. he has been very clear, erdogan has been very clear about getting rid of assad in syria, which is u.s. policy, but nothing has been done about it and the growing frustration, i think, we have seen the turkey bombing, the airport bombing in istanbul. and then i think the nice attack was probably just too much for the secularists inside the military. you remember that the secularists inside the military have been over the last years, replaced with some islamists, loyalists of president erdogan, so even within the turkish military, which is a very powerful military, there has been an ongoing, if you will, weeding out of the secularists in favor of the islamists. that's been a problem for the military. and they finally said enough is enough. >> rick that is troubling, as we have been talking about on the show.

turkey is seen as a hedge against islamic fundamentalism. ally we can lean on and work with in part, i guess. not dwindling over the past so years, but where do we go from here if now, as you mention, these secularists being pulled out of the military, and tried? >> look, you know, you are looking at a world without u.s. leadership. i'm somebody who believes that the u.s. has a responsibility. we have seen this problem coming. no one should be surprised. it's shocking, actually, to hear the white house say that they were surprised by this move. i mean, when you see the airport attack. you see the nice attack. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell that you there is going to be problems inside turkey we should have been leaning on erdogan's decisions all along. he was signaling to us that he was getting more islamic in his views. getting closer towards the islamist. and that was a problem. and, you know, look, i don't think that you can take away the politics of this.

the hillary clinton statement, for instance, on what's happened in turkey was really more of the same in the status quo. she is talking about, you know, talking and having more powerful diplomacy. this is someone from -- who was the head diplomat for the united states and turkey went off the rails when she was our top diplomat. turkey signaled, for instance, when they picked a fight on the gaza blockade, president erdogan sent the flotilla to gaza, that challenged the united states policy. that challenged israel's policy. and we did very little to let the islamist know. >> ric grenell, former u.s. spokesperson, thanks for your time today. >> thank you. >> last night things got a little wild when the host of the five finally hit the road. they are on a bus, cruising across america. where are they this morning? what are they eating? we'll find out in about five minutes. stay tuned. >> plus, some are calling trump's pick of mike pence boring and dull. but will the indiana

1400 others wounded. and now at least 2800 people arrested. military and police personnel that were involved in the coup. now this happened overnight. it started late last night. turkish president recep tayyip erdogan, was on vacation, out of the country when the attempted coup started. the presidential palace was hit, there was an explosion there and also at the country's parliament in ankara, there was a lot of fighting, helicopter gunships opening fire on ground targets in ankara and here in istanbul. where tens of thousands of people hit the streets protesting and showing support for president erdogan. now he arrived here this morning, at ataturk airport on the european side in istanbul and said the perpetrators, those with the attempted coup would be met with the harsh penalties possible. we've also heard of a blackhawk hawk that flew to greece

carrying several turkish military commanders and some privates that were seeking asylum. they were arrested for illegal trespassing. this again as the government continues to round up those that were involved in the attempted coup. it was violent, it was intense, but it's quite a contrast as i said this morning, between last night and today. it's a beautiful day, traffic is flowing again. the bosphorus bridge was the first thing to be shut down and any airports followed. well traffic is flowing again, the airports have reopened and for now, as i've been saying, it remains quiet. but certainly there's a great deal of concern about the political instability. guys, back to you. >> thanks. incredible how it's changed so fast. such a short amount of time. >> got to tell you about this, another fox news alert, the nice terrorist may have had help. five people arrested this morning in connection with thursday's deadly attack. the terrorist's ex-wife is one of those detained. >> this as isis claims responsibility for the attack.

calling the truck driver a quote soldier of terror. the french interior minister revealing the terrorist seems to have become radicalized quickly. >> live pictures in nice, you're looking at the promenade where the terrorist mowed down and killed 84 in total. >> let's bring in retired lieutenant-general michael flynn, former director of the intelligence agency in the obama administration. nice to see you, your response overnight to the developments out of turkey, and news that we're learning this morning of the american air base having its power cut. what does it mean for the future of the united states security in the region. >> this is very complex and fluid situation as you guys have been reporting. my number one concern of the safety and security of all the americans over there. we have an awful lot of americans, not only our armed forces stationed over there. our embassy and just other

american who is may be over there, just visiting for the summer. that's my first concern. the situation, there's been big tension between the erdogan administration and his military and that's been going on for a couple of decades, we've seen other purges by him. you have this real challenge in turkey between erdogan, an islamist, and the military which is a very secular organization. so obviously it broke down in the last 24 hours. and things remain to be seen. i understand erdogan has been out and made a statement and there's going to be some, some, some second and third-order effects that are going to be paid by those in the military. i know there are some leaders that are already being rounded up. i would tell you we have to ask why and why now. i think that would be one of the questions that i would certainly be asking if i were advising the president. >> so general you spent years in

the intelligence world. reports this morning suggest the obama administration had no idea this was coming. does that surprise you? >> yeah. i mean it does. that does surprise me. we, these, these purges have gone on, i know that there's been tension, i think that we've had, i mean i have good contacts over there and there's always been tension. i think the specific timing of it is always a difficult, difficult thing to tell, but what we need to make sure of, when we have situations like this, is what will our response be. we need to walk ourselves through these types of scenarios, more and more of these types of things could happen. >> i want to get your reaction this morning, we're talking about the power being cut to that base. the reports of that in turkey. and the base is largely used by the united states for air strikes against the islamic state and this morning they're claiming responsibility for the nice attack where the maniac mowed over so many people, and killed 84.

what's your response to that with isis taking responsibility? >> not surprised at all. i wish bet that as we continue to do the forensics on this thing and i'm already aware of some connection to potentially a north african group as well as some in syria. so you know this is not surprising. there's a network inside of europe. there's a network that commands and controls these things. they go beyond inspiring and they direct picking the types of targets and the timing of these types of targets is very precise, very methodical. this is not happenstance. so it's unbelievable tragedy. this is why we have to deal with this radical islamist threat and i've just published a book on that. and to me there are ways to defeat them. we have to get serious and clearly define them first. >> i'm curious if what the president said yesterday is in your book as a matter of dealing with isis. i want to play a president's

sound bite here and get your response to see if it jibes with the way you would battle isis. >> in contrast to these terrorists who only know how to kill and destroy, we're going to win this fight by building. by never giving up on diplomacy. >> so we're going to win this fight by building and never giving up on diplomacy. is that the road to victory? >> building what and diplomacy with who? i mean -- >> it's just incredibly week. just a weak response when we need strong leadership. that's what we witnessed in that comment. so that's kind of where we are in the world today. and i just think that it's a real shame. we need to be taking a much stronger leadership role against this very vicious enemy. and that we just saw, run down mothers, fathers, children. i mean for what, a really sick

ideology. so it's really sad and what we're going to find is that more of these things will continue to happen because we are not taking this seriously enough. >> so general just a couple of hours, donald trump is set to appear for the first time with his vice presidential pick, governor pence of indiana. you were in the running for that job. pence came out a few months ago and said trump's proposed muslim ban was wrong and unconstitutional. now he's saying this. let's listen. >> i am very supportive of donald trump's call. to temporarily suspend immigration from countries where terrorists influence and impact represents a threat to the united states, what i've heard from donald trump, and i believe the position he's articulated that resonates with millions of americans, is that we've got to find out what's going on and we've got to do something different, and we've got to put the safety and security forward. >> wouldn't our first line of defense against isis be our

borders? is that a nutty thing to say, do you think? >> our first, our first -- couple things. donald trump made absolutely the right pick. i was honored to be in the running. i got a great call from donald trump a couple of nights back. basically thanking me and thanking me for the support that i have been giving him. so absolutely the right our first concern and i think that's where donald trump is at, and what you're hearing out of governor pence is that we have to be concerned about our homeland first. the safety and security of the american people should be the first concern of the president of the united states. and right now with some of the comments that we've seen out of the white house with what happened in dallas recently, with whatted on orlando, with what happened in san bernardino and what we know to be true. we should not, we should not be afraid of the enemy. but we have to make sure that we understand, we have to guarantee or try to work as hard as we can to protect the safety and

security of the american people. >> general flynn, the gop primary left the republican party extremely divided. and one of the reasons for the choice of governor pence is the hope is that it will bring the party together. governor pence was on hannity last night. more of that interview compared donald trump to ronald reagan and thinks that he's going to be able to rally everybody together at the convention. >> i believe in the collective wisdom of the american people we had a competitive primary within a enormous number of talented men and women and donald trump again and again emerged. i think very much like the 40th president, that you and i so, so admire, ronald reagan, donald trump understands the anxiety and the aspiration of the american people. like no leader since reagan and he's given voice to that. and people have rallied around him and i believe will continue to rally around him.

and i think there's, tucker i think there's a double standard at play here. that double standard is borne unfortunately, a bigotry of low limitations. they're being judged by a lesser standard. as if there's an expectation that we can't possibly be secular democrats, i think that's a form of bigotry and i challenge it. and it's incredibly unfortunate. it leads to the discrimination and disempowerment on the very communities my fellow liberals are purporting to want to support? >> that's such a smart play. i hope people watching at home have taped this and can replay this again and again. it's really smart. >> the president says the moderate muslim community is so important on rooting out terrorism and calling it radical islamic terror is something that will alienate that community. why do you disagree with him? >> on the contrary. think what it does, to call this islamist ideology, violent

manifestation, jihadist terrorism it allows reforming muslims within the muslim community. it allows them to engage in that conversation to address these very uncomfortable issues, that are all real and present communities. there are serious challenges between equality, rauts. a pakistani singer and actress, social media star was killed allegedly by her own brother allegedly, in a so-called honor killing. these are often justified by religion. it's ignorant to say this has nothing to do with islam. that's as unhelpful, frankly, as saying that is islam. i think the truth is in the middle. of course the blindingly obvious is to recognize that this has something to do with islam. not nothing, and not everything. we apply to historical

christianity. imagine how absurd it would sound for somebody to argue that the spanish inquisition had nothing to do with christianity or chaatholicism. it would sound absurd and the same liberals are the first to jump on christian fundamentalists when anti-abortion clinics are blown up. yet somehow that standard is abandoned when it comes to my fellow muslims. and i think the bigotry of low expectation can only lead to the disempowerment of those beleaguered reformist, muslim voices, many who exist, many pay with their lives, they need our support. if my fellow liberals are concerned about minority communities, they should be first concerned about the women, the gay muslims, those secular muslims who are struggling within their own community for their rights. >> we're grateful you came on again and we hope you come back again. thanks. >> pleasure, thank you.

cabot phillips, nice to see all of you this morning. democrats saying that mike pence is boring and dull. ken is this going to do a lot to rally young voters? >> he's kind of got to say it i'm a lib tearial. his hawkish views and more socially conservative views i don't necessarily agree with. but those are things that people are worried about in terms of trump. the evangelicals, is trump religious? he was pro choice in the past. the choice makes sense to me personally. but i'm a libertarian. >> are you feeling the pence excitement this morning? >> i'm not feeling the pence. he was not my first choice. and the sole reason for that is i know if i were advising hillary i would leverage pence to make this a conversation about social issues, primarily. if donald trump is talking about lgbt rights and talking about abortion, he's losing, he needs to be focused on jobs, the economy and isis, anything else is a lotter.

>> we knew, cabot, that donald trump is not going to pick someone with more bravado than him or upstage him. that's why i never really bought the chris christie argument. it seems like it's a quiet, smart choice for the base. >> the fact that a lot of young people don't know about him. they'll not finding a scandal, they're finding guys who have been a strong leader, conservative governor that did good things for his state. i talked to a lot of leadership students on campuses around the country this shows donald trump's commitment to bringing on board strong conservatives. >> i wanted him to pick anthony bourdain myself. >> i think that donald trump needed help with foreign policy. >> especially after the events of this week. that's who he should have picked. >> take a look at a new poll this is our topic this morning with millennials, specifically on the hillary clinton question.

trump campaign saying he is the best person to be president, particularly given the number of terrorist attacks we've seen around the world in recent months, here's pence on hannity last night. >> i think the wider world knows that america needs to be strong for the world to be safe and secure. and donald trump is going to provide the kind of broad-shouldered american leadership on the world stage that i think will make the world a more stable place. >> now over the course of their histories and obviously trump's political history is shorter than that of pence who has been in politics for 20 years, there's points of convergence, and points of divergence. corporate tax cuts, tax cuts for all americans. divergence for things like donald trump's proposed ban on muslims entering the country. mike pence called that in december, offensive and unconstitutional. he's since changed now to be more on trump's side saying with

all this terrorism we do need to look at immigration. donald trump said he would rip up the trans-pacific partnership on day one of his presidency. if he gets elected. pence was in support of that. although he does seem to have gotten the trump memo about free trade, tpp and trade deals. here he is again. >> i've always supported free trade and donald trump supports free trade as well. trade and commerce supports american jobs and -- supports growth in this country. but -- i think when we elect one of the best negotiators in the world as president of the united states, i'm open to renegotiating these trade agreements. >> donald trump expected to talk about that this morning when he introduces mike pence, as well as the situation in turkey. and hillary clinton. here's what he tweeted out a little while ago, crooked hillary has been an a disaster on foreign policy. look what's happened. an hour and a half from now we'll get all of this in the

to tell you the truth. despite the fact that obviously governor christie has been damaged by bridgegate. he said he's not the unindicted c co-conspirator. the attack on nice and the istanbul airport and so forth. i thought that would have been the better choice. pence reminds me a lot of dan quayle. a nice guy, great. doesn't detract or subtract anything from trump. i don't think it gives him a single extra vote. i think kasich in ohio would have been you know in terms of pragmatic politics, a far better choice, but kasich pulled out. >> i got to say you know trump all these years. you're pretty open minded i think about trump. long skeptical of his immigration policies. i wonder if the terror attacks for last six months where you've seen people from a very specific region of the world commit

attacks from the west. have made you open your mind a little bit. >> what a great question. the short answer is no. but let me tell you. >> not letting it get in the way. >> let me explain why. i don't believe for an instance that the nice truck bombing had anything to do with immigration. unless you go back multigenerations which i don't think is very fair. trump, his irish scottish roots can go back decades to immigration issues, i don't think that immigration had anything to do with nice, immigration had nothing to do with omar mateen in orlando, florida, was barely involved in the san bernardino massacre. i don't think it's primarily an immigration issue, it's primarily a military issue, what is so frustrating to me. this is the way trump and pence should play this it's inconceivable that we have allowed isis to control the geographic entity. a country from which they can launch these diabolical attacks

or inspire these attacks. why has our military been so cautious. >> you just undercut your own argument. you said these are not people from abroad. you said these are people who grew up in the country. isis's command of territory is nothing to do with it these are the children of immigrants. >> wrong. >> they're not the kids of scottish immigrants. >> you're wrong. because -- ma teen and i would submit that the tunisian in nice inspired by and we now this morning have isis claiming credit for the nice truck driver. as long as they can arrogantly defy the world, we have established a caliphate. we have a country. we have raqqah as our capital. mosul as our subcapital. we have a treasury, you can just imagine underground they probably have conference rooms where air conditioning, they can have charts and plots and have all of their computers there. it's not like they're in a sublet in a bad neighborhood in

paris waiting for the landlord to drop a dime on them and rat them out. we have allowed them a country. trump is right. let's declare war on this country. they have a caliphate. the caliphate is geographic country. we have a country under attack by that country. the united states and our allies, france and turkey has, i'm sure we'll be discussing that. that's hobbled there other allies, the united kingdom we can call on, russia, let's get rid of isis the country. let's declare war and do that. and you will see how during the search, here's my example, i was a lot of time in iraq during the surge. '07, '08, '09. when we were putting the pressure on al qaeda, the more leaders we took out, drone strikes, we decapitated their primary leaders, their generals, their directors, the external attacks dropped dramatically.

i bet you that if we wipe out isis the country you're going to see a big diminution, there's not going to be bragging rights for these folks, they're going to know that their ideology represented is extreme and the whole world has turned against them. they've have no place to run. it takes a lot of the glamour out to make it an immigration issue is unnecessary distracting. immigration issue, people think about brick walls and mexicans. >> you'll come around. >> i think trump has to come my way and i think he will. >> you think you two can agree to disagree. >> geraldo rivera. the question is why did donald trump pick mike pence as his running mate. former trump campaign adviser barry bennett shares insight. after the attack in nice, the president says the answer is diplomacy. >> contrast to these terrorists who only know how to kill and destroy.

to pick pence? will his choice of vp bring the party together? >> former trump campaign adviser barry bennett joins us from cleveland. barry, nice to see you this morning. i don't know if you heard geraldo on the show who has known trump for 40 years, he says he thinks trump was vacillating right until the very end on his decision. do you buy that argument? >> i don't, you i don't think mr. trump has ever vacillated about anything. i don't think that's in his personality. so let me, it's almost impossible these days to separate truth from rumor in news accounts. there were an awful lot of stories saying trump was angry at pennsylvania or his camp for leaking news that he was going to be the vp early and that he was thinking about making a change up until the last minute. that's false, you think? >> i don't doubt that he was angry about the leaks. he hates leaks. but i don't think that he was rethinking the issue. you know he was very deliberative person and i've never seen him walk back a

decision. >> and do you think he's going to help to bring the party together? many said that this was a stable choice for donald trump to make bringing in someone who is socially conservative and to rally the establishment support. do you think that's going to happen this week and pence will do the trick? if the look at the part of the party that hasn't coalesced around trump, it's the conservative end. and they like pence, he's a solid christian conservative guy. middle class, midwestern grandson of a bus driver. his parents owned a gas station. he was also chairman of the subcommittee on the middle east and the foreign affairs committee. he's got a lot of experience in foreign affairs. i'm sure they're talking about nice and turkey this morning. his leadership in the house, he's been executive of a very big, successful state. he brings a lot to the ticket. i think. >> turkey and nice, we'll hear from them on these issues.

what can we expect from this announcement in new york city? i think most of the world is going to see mike pence for the first time. he's got a good personality. a solid guy, i think they're going to like him a lot. >> how about the ideological mix and mesh between these two guys. pence is very much a traditional conservative, a strong one. he's for cutting entitlements, he's for the iraq war. trump is much more of a nationalist. he's very opposed to not just the iraq war, but wars like it he's not interested in cutting entitlements. do they agree on the basic themes here? >> i hope they don't agree on everything. if two people agree on everything, one of them is not needed, right? i hope he does have some different opinions. i hope that he can, you want to debate these things out and figure out the best course of action. i hope he does bring a different set of opinions to the office. they don't agree on everything and they shouldn't. >> what about the attacks that the liberals are going to make

on him, come november saying that he alienates women, because when he was in congress he was so outspoken about defunding planned parenthood, about the religious liberty bill that many said was you know, ostracizing the lbgt community. >> i mean you can't -- you can't stop the liberals from doing silly things. look what they're up against. here in cleveland where this beautiful liquid sunshine is falling this morning. four years ago when barack obama got re-elected, there were 346,000 registered democrats in this county. it was a 73% democrat county. today as i stand here, there are only 246,000 registered democrats. it's down to 60%. though those are why the polling numbers are so close. democrat registration, the democratic capital in ohio, is dramatically changing, the only democrat party doesn't stand a chance here. >> a few seconds left. >> reporting that chris
