the veepstakes? >> i think it hurt him a lot. he didn't get it. >> if you have your own hit or miss, tweet it to us. that's it for the show. thanks for watching. hope to see you right here next week. dm donald trump introducing mike pence as running mate. appearing for the first time since yesterday calls pence his first poise for vice president. welcome to election headquarters i'm trace gallagher. >> hi, trace. today's introduction coming just two days before the start of the republican convention. governor pence offering high praise for mr. trump, endorsing the top of the ticket along with the need to make america great again. >> i thank donald trump for the confidence you've placed in us.
12:01 pm
i accept your invitation to run and serve as vice president of the united states of america. >> chief political correspondent cameron live in new york city with the latest. carl. >> hi, trace. well, trump did say pence was his first choice today and tweeted out it would be pence yesterday. thursday night he said it wasn't. he hadn't made his final decision. it won't be officially official until they are both nominated on the convention floor next week. that said, trump sort of made light of the fact that pence wasn't always on the trump train. in fact, he had endorsed ted cruz, one of the rivals who lasted the longest and in the end dubbed lyin' ted. he said he welcomed pence to the ticket and tweaked him a little

for being been a cruz backer. >> governor pens under-of- endorsed someone else but more of an endorsement for me. if you remember, he talked about trump, then ted, who is a good guy who will be speaking at the convention the ted cruz, good guy. he talked about trump, ted, then trump. i said, who did he endorse. it was the single greatest nonendorsement i've ever had in my life. >> there you have the ticket. there had been a logo but there's been a change. yesterday when the trump campaign unveiled ted cruz with the tweet they put out a logo put out tp, trump pence, make america great. that is no more. decided to go with what's on the screen now, much more traditional, graphic design, not

engender social media they were putting on the first logo. these are kinds of things we have to cover but in fact have very little to do with the race. the vice presidential pick usually doesn't have a tremendous effect on the success or failure of the presidential candidate in either party. history dictates that. it can be a liability, but very rarely is it a major boost to the campaign but a boost in the polls on the shorthand. when you look back over history, despite descriptions of this process picking a running mate for donald trump this time around, if you compare it to virtually all of the selections over the last few years, presidential campaigns, always a terrible, terrible race by the press, all cutting and gouging trying to get to it first. it happened with mitt romney when he picked paul ryan, late at night to the following announcement and every race back. so now that there's a running mate and candidate, they will next time appear at the

convention. first vice presidential candidate has a speech. thursday night next that's when we'll hear from donald trump and see two candidates arms raised. today pence has a coming home rally in indianapolis. a lot of folks there welcoming him. trump does plan to do a little campaigning as the convention unfolds but he'll also be making appearances there periodically, often he hopes almost arriving in secret. trump campaign loves to keep the suspense going, trace. >> that initial logo did stir up some controversy on social media. carl cameron live. thank you very much. >> you bet. >> joining us now to talk more about the campaign is trump surrogate and florida governor rick scott. good to have you here, governor. >> i think he did a good job. i think mike is a great choice. i have a bias for governors. he's going to help trump get elected. >> very good. let's start here. i like the way you introduced it. governor, let me ask a couple

questions. politicos will start to highlight differences between governor pence and trump, political liability. do you see that as a difference, yin and yang, salt and pepper, cream to coffee. >> what pence brings to the table, governor experience, executive experience, congress experience, good relationship with congress. i think it's a very good choice. look, people are going to clearly have disagreements, but trump's agenda is the agenda. we need more jobs. we need person jobs. we need to destroy isis, build our military. governor pence is going to be supportive of that. when donald trump becomes next president, mike pence's vice president is going to help that agenda get implemented. >> of course mr. trump made sure to mention governor pence is his first choice and one of the reasons he chose pens was to
12:06 pm
promote party unity. is there anything for pundits to read between the lines there that pence was a compromise choice? >> i don't think so. i've talked to donald. he's excited about mike pence. he's excited for the right reasons. he's a governor. he's got experience but he also has great relationships and experience in congress, and he believes in this country. he believes in the american dream. that's what the republican party believes in. we believe you can come from any zip code, any family and achieve anything. that's what mike pence believes, donald trump believes. this is donald trump's agenda, build jobs, american jobs, destroy isis, build our military. that's the agenda that's going to go forward. >> now that governor pence has been chosen as veeps pick, game on. in what areas does governor pence need coaching or prepg for as he will now be under the
12:07 pm
national and international microscope. >> mike has been very successful in congress, with governor, i compete with him for jobs. he has added 150,000 jobs since he got elected. unemployment from 8.4 to 5% since he got elected. he's a good competitor. i think he's going hit the ground running. he clearly believes like donald does we need to focus on american jobs and destroying isis. i think he's going to do a great job. ening it's a great source. >> certainly not implying governor pence is a novice, absolutely not. but the spotlight when it comes to being vice president is different from that as running a state or local municipality. can he handle it? >> mike is a hard work. first off he's got a wonderful family. his wife karen is a wonderful person. he's a hard worker. he'll work hard and campaign hard and make sure donald trump is our next president. that's what we have to do, make sure donald trump wins so we can

himself operating from the gut, that was truly a cerebral decision. this was a decision that was aimed at solidifying the republican conservative base, which he really needed to do. mike pence's conservative credentials are impeccable and that's exactly what donald trump needed even if he might have wanted somebody else with whom he was more simpatico. >> you touched on the top, differences between these guys are vast. they do not agree on same-sex marriage. they do not agree on trade. when donald trump came out with his muslim ban mike pence called it unconstitutional and offensive. clearly there's some big differences between these guys. >> right. there's something that reporters weirdly enough haven't even focused on yet, which i've written about for foxnews.com, which is their different attitudes to reporters. when i went to jail in 2005 to

in this. i don't think we've done anything differently. planned for tragedies and possibilities from the beginning. >> it's interesting, mr. lewis, field producer on the ground in cleveland sent us a list of things that are banned inside the secure area around the convention. the list is really long, including everything from water bottles to tennis balls. is this standard operating procedure or have things been added to the list because of events in recent months and years? >> i think historically this is a pretty consistent list with rnc and dncs and tennis balls are annoying to the horses. so that's why they don't want horses running wild and stomping people. so umbrellas and things like that. what is troubling, you can't have a tennis ball in here but
12:35 pm
you have a gun, automatic weapon, open carry. it's perfectly legal but highly irresponsible at this point for anybody on both sides of this equation to have a gun. it's going to make our job much more difficult. >> the next question, you can have a tennis ball or can't have a tennis ball but you can't have a gun, which is clearly disturbing to some people and not others. the question remains, what is your biggest concern? is it the protesters you're worried most about or some outside force? >> from a street level and uniformed officers out there, certainly the protesters. it's not just protesters, supporters as well. our goal, main goal is to get everybody home in the same condition they came here in. the police officers, protesters themselves, trump supporters themselves. that's an ideal world. that's really what we're working for here.

two very, very passionate groop groups of people on opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to their ideologies. the last thing we need is for them to have weapons involved and thrown into that mix. it's going to take the attention away from where we need to have attention. that would be the possibility of a bad guy wanting to do people harm. >> expound on that, if you will. you talked about two very sets of passionate people. when do those passions cross the line? have your officers been trained to say, look, there's a fine line between freedom of speech and crossing over? what is exactly stepping across the line in your opinion? >> well, in our opinion, anything physical. this is a great country. i was in the united states navy, i was all around the world. no better place in the world to live. you can come here and say what you want to say and make your point. you can't throw bricks at the police, try to hurt each other,

months if not years. we have faith-based community leaders. we have legitimate community leaders, we have some not legitimate but legitimate community leaders. everybody is on the same page. nobody wants to see anybody get hurt locally. we don't want to see the city -- any damage to the city. we're more concerned about outsiders coming in that really don't have those concerns or those passions and we're going to deal with them very, very bankruptly if they try to get physical here. the chief has a policy, very public policy, one rock, one arrest. we're going to be ready, willing, and able to enforce that. hopefully we don't have to go down that road. >> detective lewis, we wish you and your department well. thank you. >> thank you very much, sir. i appreciate that. >> absolutely. trace, the turkish president speaking out now delivering new information about the attempted military coup in the country. live in istanbul with the

good or bad news for europe. we'll talk about that when bill and i explain from myself and cleveland at the top of the hour. >> we'll look forward to it, thank you, martha. >> thank you, guys. see you then. supporters are holding a rally for governor mike pence after formally accepting donald trump's invitation to join him on the republican ticket in new york as martha said. that rally is expected to get underway at 5:00 eastern time. and she and bill will have all the details for you. well, isis is now claiming responsibility for the deadly attack in the french resort city of nice as france mourns another massacre on its soil. critics lash out after security forces fail to prevent the attack. france was still under a state of emergency after previous isis terror attacks. now some are wondering if more needs to be done. let's bring in bill gavin, a former assistant director of the fbi in new york and former chief

executive for the fbi in new york, miami and denver. bill, great to see you. isis is now calling this killer in france a soldier, right? do you think that this guy was radicalized? do you think isis is just taking responsibility because it's a big banner event? what do you make of this? >> it's so difficult to tell at this particular point in time, trace. they call him a soldier. and say that he was committing this act of terrorism against a country that's in coalition against isis. but by the same token, to date there hasn't been an extreme amount of information coming forth that shows that he was -- how he was radicalized, self-radicalization or received it from somebody else. that still has to be flushed out. but what gets me is we have isis calling this man a soldier in a war against the west. they realize it's a war.
1:44 pm
we have a president in the white house who is not a wartime president. he's still into flower power and whatever he did before he became a politician. this is terrible. he's got to get on a wartime footing to stomp this crisis out and where it originates. he's not doing that and we're going to have these type of incidents that will go on forever. until somebody grabs the reigns. >> the administration would counter that by saying they are doing as much as they can, they have air strikes and allies in unison. you know, the french president now saying that france has an uptick in air strikes against isis in syria and iraq. so what's the argument that you would say, what is the declaration of war? how does that improve our posture in going after isis? >> the uptick, bill, is they are doing it after each one of these incidents. i'm sorry, they are doing it after each one of these incidents. and trace, they have to do it on a continued basis.
1:45 pm
they have all the power. how many times did we read that american flyers went into targets and weren't allowed to drop their ordinance because of that whole bugaboo of collateral damage. there's 84 dead people and 300 injured that are collateral damage that the other side doesn't care about. we have to go in and take them out where they are training people, where their stronghold is, that's the only way you're going to stomp this whole thing out. there will be some collateral damage. but we have to face that and get brave about it. >> bill gavin, great insight, thank you, sir. good to see you. and the turkish government reasserting control after a failed coup attempt. but now the war against isis is taking a hit. the details and what the u.s. can do about it ahead. plus, donald trump naming indiana governor mike pence as his running mate. what he brings to the republican ticket and the role he might play on the campaign trail. if you run everyday,

welcome back. the reported attempted coup is putting missions against isis on hold. peter cook saying today, quote, in part, the turkish government has closed its air space to

military aircraft and as a result air operations at incirlik air base have been halted at this time. the u.s. officials are working with the turks to resume air operations there as soon as as possible. in the meantime u.s. central command is adjusting flight operations in the counter isil campaign to minimize the effect on the campaign around u.s. facilities operating on internal power sources. the loss of commercial power to the base has not effected base operations. very important to note there. turkey is a key middle east ally and an important member of the coalition fighting isis. john kerry saying that has not changed. listen. >> as of this moment turkey's cooperation with us in our nato
1:51 pm
operations all of that has continued as before. >> let's talk about this now with jim walch. president obama reit taiting that the united states has support for turkey. so such instability still present in turkey and within the ranks of the turkish military what do you think is going to happen and how do you think this is going to effect the overall fight with isis. >> i think it is likely to effect it at least in so far as you right now you have the turkish military attempting to stage a coup against the elected president in turkey therefore one would expect at a minimum the military is deeply divided and there will probably be trials and actions against the military involved. a lot of people are going to be
1:52 pm
looking over their shoulders to see if they're going to be put up on charges and i would think that would have an effect on turkish's military. if the military is going to be con suld with internal problems that means they'll be focusing on that and not other problems in the region like isis. >> as you know one of the weakest security links is turkey's boarder with syria and iraq. did those so-called road military personnel who attempted this coup did they have a valid concern that under erdogan's authority that will remain insecure. >> that's correct especially in years gone by turkey turned a blye eye to extremists who were crossing the boarder and they did that because the turkish government was anti-assad so anyone regardless of their point of view who was willing to fight assad they were willing to allow
1:53 pm
across that boarder. turkey started to clamp down on the boarder an just last week turkey said it was going to change its policy towards syria. it didn't spell out what in particular but it seemed as if it was on the move. my guess is that despite all these dramatic foreign policy moves over the past couple of weeks this was about internal politics rather than external foreign policy. preside i think there's a feeling that the turkish president was increasingly taking on power and was turning into an autocrat and the military might have felt they better act before they lose any chance of acting. again i don't endorse that coup at all but i think it's likely it's that sort of logic rather than a concern about the fight against isis that might have motivated the military to act. >> okay. i want to switch over to travel
1:54 pm
because as we have been reporting as well that the faa is now banning all flights between the u.s. and ankara and istanbul. there's some residents already -- u.s. residents already there in turkey and many often travel back and forth for business. so what's your advice to those who would be traveling later once the ban is lifted? should people feel safe to travel to turkey? >> i can answer that question very personally because my wife and i are planning on going to turkey in another two weeks for a u.s./turkey meeting and i still plan on going. the fact that there was the coup i don't think has any direct apply occasi implications for every day security on the streets and hotels. yes, there was that terror attack at istanbul airport some weeks back but i think in general as a likelihood it's a very very very small chance that
1:55 pm
any american would be put at risk by traveling to turkey once that ban is lifted and i would encourage people if they have concerns go on the state department website because they will put out safety advisories if they think americans are in danger. my guess is it's going to be perfectly fine to travel there but it's probably not going to happen for days, weeks, something like that. >> okay. thank you very much for your expertise and safe travels to you and your wife. >> thank you. we are awaiting governor and now presidential candidate mike pence back to his home state of indiana. we'll bring it to you live moments from now. tired of re-dosing antacids? try duo fusion! new, two in one heartburn relief. the antacid goes to work in seconds... and the acid reducer lasts up to 12 hours in one chewable tablet. try new duo fusion. from the makers of zantac. now you can't spell nutriam i right?t nut,
