se donald trump seems to have redirected the path of the republican party or at least is hoping to. >> as far as the size and scope what we've built here -- >> the reince. >> reporter: i asked reince priebus is the gop is changing into what some call the more populist country. >> donald trump said five years from now it will be a different party. you're going to have a workers' party, a party of people who haven't had a real wage increase in 18 years. >> we've got to be for the welders and the guys making tools, and the union shops and construction workers. that's what the republican party is and should be. that's the only way you grow. you have to. >> reporter: i spoke to senate majority leader mitch mcconnell about the gop in the air rather -- era of trump. >> i don't think the republican party are going to start standing for things we haven't in the past. we are america's conservative party. >> reporter: there's a split.

when they talks it, terrorists and not what you've supported in the republican party bland stil don't. >>? split there? >> yes. if you think america can do better taking a different path, donald trump represents a different path. we may have some discussions inside the party about exactly what that path ought to look like, but believe me, it will be very different from the last eight years. >> reporter: after talking to so many people about the meaning of donald trump, we thought we'd give the last word to the man himself. i spoke with trump as he was preparing to come lehere to cleveland, to find out his latest thinking on his campaign and where he stands. first off i asked if there's a new trump in the offing. you're giving speeches off the teleprompter more. some people noticed that your tone changed a little bit in recent days. is this the turn that everybody

talks about, that you're pivoting now to become this more controlled presidential candidate? >> i'll give you a terrible answer. i don't think so. i want to be myself. you know? it got me here. >> reporter: he dismisses the movement against him within his own party. >> this never trump movement is nonsense you understand. >> reporter: you're not worried about it? >> not even a little bit. by the way, there always are, bret. you can look back at ronald reagan, look back at anybody. there's never been a convention, even if somebody was extremely popular. look, here's a simple answer, though. i went through a period of almost a year where i got more votes than anybody, by far. we increased the vote total for republican primaries by 67%. it's an unheard of number. now, you're going to take the person that did that and in one day with a couple of loudmouths you're going to say, oh, forget about the last year. forget about the fact trump got

know votes in the history of party, let's put something else in there. put in somebody that didn't wane state. >> reporter: you said it couldn't hoop? >> not going to happen. the alternative is hillary clinton. >> reporter: what do you think the gop will look like in five years after the first term of what you say will be a trump administration? >> well, it's going to be changing. look at the platform right now, the platform is largely a trump platform. strong on trade. look at the wall, and you look at the borders and you look at all's things. a few people said it's like a donald trump speech. >> reporter: on the other issues you've talked out about, that you've said there is some kind of middle ground. are you concerned about social conservatives and making sure they are -- >> i am. i am. >> reporter: in the tent? >> i am a representative of the party. we're doing something for the e

eevangelicals, we're going to do something to help the evangelicals, the christians, give them their voice back. what's happening with the platform is very good. do i agree with everything? nobody ever has. >> reporter: what's the story you're going to tell at the convention. >> law and order story. a lot of stories at the convention. >> reporter: and in the wake of the latest attacks in france, one of trump's story, about the need to confront terror. >> you have to knock isis out. we have an obligation to the world to knock them out. >> reporter: finally, one thing i had to know. make america great, again. the slogan that -- >> again. >> reporter: people identify with. i wonder when in your mind was america great? >> you know, at the turn of the century, if you look we did with the great factories and the great -- with the steel and with all of what was happening, that was an amazing time. now, every time has weaknesses. because it wasn't inclusionary.

it was you know, lots of different things. i thought ronald reagan, i disagreed with him on trade very much, disagreed with him on trade but thought he was a cheerleader in an elegant way. in many ways a great time. >> reporter: reagan's last time? >> i would say that ronald reagan was special. he was special. that was a time, i felt, we felt good about ourselves. >> reporter: as shakespeare writes, what's past is prologue. everything we've seen up to this point, no matter how extraordinary, no matter how unparalleled, has simply set the stage for what's to come. but we can guess, based on what we've seen so far that donald trump will continue to surprise. that may mean he'll keep on being his quite singular self or it may mean he'll really shock us and become a more conventional candidate. where mr. trump goes next and where his party goes next are open questions.
