has beset baton rouge. >> this man is shooting at the police. he has a mask on looking like a wizard, baby. rifle. he is military. i don't know who this man is. >> and it was about 9:00 a.m. yesterday that the sounds of sirens and a gun battle broke the peace of sunday morning in baton rouge. these officers were eating at a popular restaurant not far from police headquarters when the call came in for a man with a rifle, and they arrived there nearby a local business, a gas station and a couple of other businesses, a car wash. little did they know they were walking straight into that ambush. >> shots fired. officer down. shots fired, officer down. got a city officer down. shots fired. >> we have an officer down. >> the deputies, they're getting the one officer in just a second. stand by.

experience while in the military. that did not stop him from being an unbelievable and deadly aim. had a lot of extra ammunition on him as you heard from that witness, dressed in all black. combing through his social media pages show a very troubled man clearly with a lot of hate in his mind, not only for whites in general but specifically for police officers. and as you travel around bad ton rouge, you run into law enforcement from all over louisiana, all over the country, and clearly they are here to support their brothers at the baton rouge police department. they are also here out of fear that these attacks on police officers may not be over. back to you guys. >> all right. leland vittert, live in baton rouge. let's bring in david webb. david, apparently the shooter in a series of rambling youtubes urged black americans to fight back against police. we don't know the motive of why he did the shooting, why he put on the mask dressed like a ninja, the body armor. we don't know the motive, we just know that things feel like
3:06 am
they're spiraling out of control. >> yeah. first of all, i'm disgusted that this killer ever wore the title u.s. marine. it's personally insulting. i've spoken to many other marines in the last 24 hours who are insulted. i say that he does not reflect at all what a true marine is. these are the protectors of our communities. baton rouge is a city i know well, have been there and worked with 4r5e67law enforcement on ar of issues. the first message to the nation, this can't continue. frankly, the excuses that he got divorced and he had a bad time. a lot of people get divorced. >> a lot of them. >> and they don't go out and kill. >> montrel jackson leaves behind a 4-month-old boy. he wrote something pretty powerful on facebook and i posted it on twitter if you want

approval to legitimize in a movement with the violence within it. there are people concerned about serious issues. there are bad sheeps, those should be dealt with. no good cop likes a bad cop, that's a fact, but when you're president in the united states and you have an irresponsible action, you bring in people like deree mckeeson and people from houston who have brought in violence. >> they called for violence to stop yesterday. meanwhile, you brought up the president. he's been doing this for 7 1/2 years. we've been talking about this way too much. here's a look back at the way he's handled some of these remarks against the shootings against law enforcement. >> the cambridge police acted stupidly. there is a long history in this country of african-americans and latinos being stopped by law
3:09 am
enforcement disproportionately. that's just a fact. the african-american community is also knowledgeable that there is a history of racial disparities in the enforcement of laws. >> we have seen too many instances of what appears to be police officers interacting with individua individuals, primarily african-american, often poor, in ways that raise troubling questions. last year african-americans were shot by police at more than twice the rate of whites. african-americans are arrested
3:10 am
at twice the rate of white. there's a big chunk of our fellow citizenry that feels as if because of the color of their skin they are not being treated the same. >> how do those remarks, you think, fuel what we saw yesterday? >> they fuel them incredibly dangerously. let's take the very first piece of what the president said. right before that he said, while i don't have all the facts, and then he went on the police acted stupidly. there is a lot of issues. there are issues to be addressed not only in the black community but in poor urban communities, in failed cities under liberal progressive leadership for 40 years like they did in baltimore but he tells you half truths. he gives you one sentence but doesn't put it into context because he's afraid of the full conversation to talk about the level of crime, the way crime happens in communities white or black and the fact that the numbers of stops are relative to where crimes exist. police go and work and police
3:11 am
where the crime is most dominant. >> let's see if today we can finally get the motive. >> look, those families out there, we've had eight dead cops, we've had other cops around the country being shot, missouri, spine severed, shot in the back. we've got to stop this. the community has to turn around and reject black lives matter. >> it would be great if we stopped it here first in cleveland and had a peaceful convention. >> thank you, david. >> everyone is concerned about the security. they're fueling fresh security concerns. with the rnc kicking off in a few hours. >> this city bracing for protests and unrest. the whole list of speakers. >> yeah, a pretty good list. peter doocy is live in cleveland with what we can expect day one, monday. >> reporter: right. every night of the convention is going to have a theme that plays out trump's very simple and very famous slogan, make america great again.
3:12 am
tonight is make america safe again. it will operate trump administration solutions to the domestic and international threats that we've been talking about, reporting on the past few days. tonight is the night they're going to talk about benghazi, hillary clinton's role in crafting foreign policy. speakers include michael flynn, congressman and former navy s.e.a.l. ryan zinke and she skipped the opening events, melania, to practice her speech at home. other themes later in the week, make america work again. make america first again. and make america one again. we have seen a complete list of speakers but reince priebus says to expect a few surprises. the focus really has shifted to what's on stage.
