a nomination not coming without controversy. mike tobin, is live covering the demonstrations and peter doocey is live in cleveland with the latest on the convention. >> reporter: you said it. the theme tonight make america safe again. that program began just a few minutes ago before us. and trump said he's the "law & order" candidate and so make america safe program will present a trump administration ideas for dealing domestic and international threats that we have reported on in the last few days, the next few nights is make america work again, make america first again. and off of the famous slogan. trump will be here to introduce his wife melania.

and telling stories about how he is as a dad and compassionate things. there is high profile republicans. senator cotton and rudy guiliani and rick perry. there is number staying home like governor kasich and bush family. but the people who attending show that the party moved past the bitter primaries. >> certainly the bush family, while we would like to have them, they are part of the past. we are dealing with the future and fixing the issues of the future. while we would like to have them they do not reflect the broad strokes of the republican party.

nomination. he turned to a traditional party stalward to be his party's nomination. >> he bungled the roll out and pence will not see a bump out of it much because pence is not exciting. and the voters that trump needs to win over is swing voters. pence will shore up the conservatives and likely to say when they look at trump, he's better than she is. trump needs swing voters and he is likely to see a bounce out of the convention. >> katy, clinton at 47 and trump at 43. we can expect each candidate to get a bump out of the conventions, but where do we go from there? >> it is interesting to see that clinton's lead has narrowed.

carolina executive party. hogan, a lot of people are interested to hear from melania. we haven't heard her say much. she is mysterious figure in that she is beautiful and people want to know about p her and hear what she has to say. what expectation and pressure does that put on her. >> it will be pressure filled and no lights hotter than the one on the presidential stage and she will be front and center tonight. we'll hear from a woman we don't know much about and she will talk a lot about donald trump. his personal life. she knows him best and is his wife. a lot of people are excited about what she has to say and outline how he is when the camera lights are not on. she is a recluse and out on the campaign trail and doesn't do

much in front of the camera talking. it is pressure filled. she is a super model for heaven's sake. and i think she will rise to the occasion and talk about p donald trump. >> carem. how much does the first lady or first husband matter to the country? >> look, it is always important to have the first lady or potential first lady, candidate's wife out there talking about their partner and who they are. you hear a lot about trump as a family man, but it never translates to the public. it is a private part of him. and so that will be interesting to see what he has to say and clearly he will be out tonight introducing her and we'll get more than one with night of donald trump. and one of the things that i noticed from the convention that is glaring, a lot of prochl nept

republicans opted out of coming to the convention. there is no one standing on stranging. especially marco rubio. >> marco rubio is coming. he is on the speaker's list. >> oh, that is my bad p. >> i hear what you are saying, you are echoing a sentiment of they are missing the establishment. and i think on the other side donald trump said i have been chosen to breakaway from the establishment and voters are sick of what is going on in washington and this convention represents that. do you think that is an easy sell or a test sell and they are looking around like who is not here because of all of the bushes. >> he didn't eck. he won with with a record number of votes in the history of republican primary politics. and he is the nominee and we'll

see in his coronation this week. it is a conversation about the future. and the folks that have been in power for decades haven't helped the american worker and that's what donald trump is talking about. putting work withers and americans first. that's what the election is about and he tapped in to that and crushed the competition and several members of the establishment. they are afraid. they can't control donald trump and there is good and bad p in that. but this week will be about the good. >> careen. everybody gets a bum. and the group that goes second gets more of an advantage. what do you think? >> it will be tough. right after this is the democratic convention and hillary clinton will announce her v, p on friday and take all of the air out of the room and

trip abroad and takes the number of dead americans to three. they observed a moment of violence. and after that, the french prime minister was booed. in the last year there have been three major terrorist attacks in this country and they want more done. and lieutenant rice was found not guilty. rice was the highest ranking officer charged in freddie gray's death. prosecutors claim that rice was negligent and uncaring when he put gray on the floor of a van without a seat belt. gray died from spinal cord

injuries that happen in the arrest. ladies, thank you for joining us. he had been on bike patrol and responsible for belting fridayy gray in and he didn't face the most serious charges, that man was already cleared who was driving the van. we saw evidence they had swung rolled and through a stop sign in another. it seems like the evident is not coming through for the prosecution. >> the defense is police officers themselves were in danger. evidence shows that freddie gray was combative and it would have been dangerous for the police officers to put him in. the police officers felt themselves they were in danger.

it shows that police officers are in danger. >> on the defense side is. the neursurgeon said the neck injuries injured immediately before the final stop. one with of the theories was he was asking for help and there were signs that they should have noticed his neck was broken and they brought out two doctors to say that was not the case. the defense brought in an expert witness. if he had trauma, it was not from the beginning but at the very end and the police officers could not have been reckless, because they didn't know it was going on and that was the central theme. we have to remember this is trial number four and we have 0 conventions and three acquittals and only mistrial that we had was the only jury trial of the

four officers thus far. the message from the judge is clear. >> there has been a civil settlement. the family received 6.4 million from the city. and the civil case, it would be different. >> all of this against the back drop of what is going on. and the speech of hillary clinton in front of the naacp making police more accountable. and all of this in theature oil. we have to go. >> fallout from the failed coup in turkey. could it bring increased tension with the idea. general jack keane joins us. >> we'll make america safe again. >> tonight in cleveland, the republican national convention kicks in high gear. america's mayor rudy guiliani

do have shady backgrounds. >> if you can successfully stamp out this so-called caliphate that exists in syria and parts of iraq, can you prevent this kind of attack in the future? >> well, i think we lost opportunities to stop what's happened in europe. when you think about it, the isis moved into syria, jon, in 2012 with several hundred fighters out of iraq, all former al qaeda guys. they established a bona fide safe haven there because of the civil war that was taking place. nobody would go near them because they were preoccupied with assad. in two years' time they grew that organization to 30,000 firefighters who came from all over the world. in 2014, they invaded iraq. they started beheading americans. and we've declared war on them. this is the point, jon. if in six months after we declared war on ice, if we had
