tv   The Real Story  FOX News  July 18, 2016 11:00am-12:01pm PDT

11:00 am
>> "the real story" starts now. see you tomorrow. thank you, guys. we start with this fox news alert. the republican national convention barely an hour old. already we've gone several demonstrations taking place in cleveland, putting security guys to the test out there. hello everybody, i'm martha maccallum, live from cleveland. huge crowds are streaming into cleveland at this hour, delegates, members of the news media as well, everybody ready to get this thing under way. >> this convention will come to order. the delegates and alternates, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 2016 republican national conventi convention. >> there you have it, it feels like it's been a long time coming, doesn't it? security is tight, dozens of protests, demonstrations and marches planned outside.
11:01 am
so far, peaceful in terms of what's going on out there. the city of cleveland, with help from the fbi, with homeland security. you can see people in every imaginable federal and local uniform out there, i can assure of had you peter doocy is live in cleveland here with us. any security issues so far, from what you're seeing out there, peter? >> reporter: none yet. two arrests, both isolated incidents. we've heard one guy tried to grab a gas mask from an officer, he got arrested. a woman rushed the stage in a protest an hour ago, she was arrested. the bigger concern that police union reps are expressing to us is about ohio's open carry law. the union had wanted it suspended. but governor john kasich isn't going to do it. his spokesperson tells us, "law enforcement is a noble, essential calling and we all grieve that we have again seen attacks on officers. ohio governors do not have the power to arbitrarily suspend federal and state constitutional
11:02 am
rights and state laws as suggested." a lot of civilians are walking around with guns outside the event problems so far, martha. >> a lot of discussion obviously about what's going on outside of q, peter. inside the q, there is still that sort of "hanging over the story" issue about who is coming and who is not coming, right? >> reporter: not as much as there was even a week or two ago. you really don't feel the presence of the so-called republican establishment. speaker of the house paul ryan is the chairman of the convention, after all. he was here this morning. and trump's campaign manager dismissed earlier today any concerns about the absence of the bush family. >> the party is unified. these are -- certainly the bush family, we would have liked to have had them. they have not been -- they're part of the past. we're dealing with the future. we're dealing with fixing the issues that relate to the future.
11:03 am
and so while we would like to have them, they do not reflect the broad strokes of the republican party. >> reporter: it's notable that by skipping this convention, john kasich becomes the first sitting governor that our brain room can find who skipped his own party's convention when it was held in his own state. but again, that is not really what we're hearing from the delegates that we talked to here at the quicken loans arena. everybody is just talking about trump, martha. >> peter, thank you very much. as you just saw there, donald trump's top strategist, paul manafort, spoke out today about the bush family's decision not to attend the gop convention, essentially calling them "old news," paul manafort did. we're joined by a donald trump supporter who will be speaking, congratulations ahead of that big moment for you. you're the attorney general of arkansas. your thoughts, when you hear of all the people who opted out, it
11:04 am
is an impressive list of names, mitt romney, the bushes among them. and john kasich, holding the convention in his own home state, the resident republican governor, not going to be there. >> the real story is there are so many people uniting behind donald trump and mike pence. we have folks from across america who came out in droves to elect donald trump in those primaries. that's the real story, is all the new voters to the process. that's what the party is doing. right now, this week, uniting around donald trump and mike pence. i'm honored to be a part of it and glad to be here. >> do you think it's better that they're not here? >> no, i think it would be great if they are here. but i know them be watching. i know so many of us supported them during their campaigns. i hope that when push comes to shove, they realize that we don't need four more years of barack obama's failed policies, which is what we would have with hillary clinton. being from arkansas, we know the clintons. and we know that it is time for them to go home and to stay home.
11:05 am
>> all right. so in terms of what you want to achieve in this convention, you look at sort of the typical parameters of how things are going, the polls are tight. i just took a look at the latest numbers, it's clear they're tightening. donald trump clearly things he's on to something in this election. yet you look at how he's doing with minorities and women. perhaps they're hoping you can help a little bit with your speech. what will you hit on to try to do that? >> it's important for americans to understand that donald trump knows that women as well as men are not single issue voters. the democratic party and certainly secretary clinton have long treated women as though they're single issue voters. we're not. we care about the jobs and national security. that's why you'll see women, minorities, the youth vote as well, start gravitating toward donald trump than we've seen in the past. >> it feels like that's the contest at the moment, for hillary clinton and donald trump
11:06 am
to each state their case for how to keep the country safe. it feels like there's nothing else that's more important. obviously women care about security. we saw that after 2001 in the bush election, the security moms, they called them, were a major force. >> that's right. people want to be able to send their children to a school, be able to go to a soccer game and be safe while they're attending or while they go to the grocery store or a parade. that's why the attacks on heir law enforcement, it's such a shame. i just call on other leaders to stand up and to shut those attacks down. as the chief law enforcement officer of arkansas, our men and women in blue, we can't thank them enough for what they do. >> what do you think of attorney general loretta lynch and the president, how they've dealt with these issues? >> i would like to tell those individuals who are bupushing bk
11:07 am
and being negative toward our law enforcement, to knock it off and shut it down. unfortunately all we're hearing is that law enforcement isn't doing enough. we need to be in those an cities. and they are. law enforcement, they want to be helping out communities. >> they've got a tough job. we've spoken to a lot of the cleveland police, working hard to keep everybody safe here. thank you, we look forward to seeing you in prime time tonight, thanks so much. knocfox news alert out of b rouge, louisiana. we're just about an hour from an update on the tragic shooting deaths of three law enforcement officers. meantime we'll listen to this unbelievably heartwrenching 911 call from the moments after those men were gunned down ands three of their fellow officers were wounded. >> shots fired! officer down! got a city officer down! shots fired!
11:08 am
officer down. code three. i got shots fired. officer down. shots fired. officer down. >> i'm hit. left arm. >> shots fired, officer down. we do not have a 40 on the shooter. possibly sniper. >> they did not know where those shots were coming from. will carr is live in baton rouge. will, first of all, any update on those injured officers? we hear the one officer describe that he's been hit in his arm in that piece of audio. how are they doing? >> reporter: really hard to listen to those recordings, martha. i'll start with the good news, though. we just found out that one of the officers who was shot here in baton rouge yesterday morning was just released from the hospital. he'll be heading home to his family. another officer in the hospital
11:09 am
behind me is still in critical condition after he was shot in the head. then there were the three officers shot and killed, they're being remembered across this community today. all three were married, all had families. their names, matthew gerald, brad garafola, and montrell jackson. jackson had a son earlier this year. his close friends and family say he always wanted to be a father and always wanted to be a police officer. take a listen to his aunt. >> he loved it. he was out there to protect and serve, you know. but like i said, this incident here, that's something no one knew, nobody knew this would happen. >> reporter: so far, the plans for these officers' funerals have not been arranged, martha. >> so what else are we learning about the gunman in this case, will? >> reporter: well, we've learned he's from kansas city.
11:10 am
he came in from out of town. also learned that he may have spent some time in dallas after the tragic police shooting that we saw play out there in texas. we know that he's a former marine. there are reports out that he has links to radical groups, although i've spoken to high ranking members of law enforcement, and they tell me that after yesterday, a number of copy cats got on social media and started creating fictitious biographies for the shooter. so they're working with the fbi to try to confirm exactly what groups he may have been linked to. and at the same time, they say as of right now, they can't rule out the fact that he potentially had help yesterday, martha. >> will carr, thank you very much, in baton rouge today. so of course there's a lot of talk about republicans today as they begin their convention. but hillary clinton keeping busy on the campaign trail out there. she's speaking out about the attack on police officers in baton rouge and how she is using
11:11 am
that to go after donald trump as part of her campaign. plus donald trump set to take the stage on this first day of the republican convention. he will not speak yet. but he will be there to introduce his wife and the potential first lady, milania. so what is she planning to say to those gathered tonight? >> he's kind. he has a great heart. he's tough. he's smart. he's a great communicator. he's great negotiator. he's telling the truth. he's a great leader. (vo) stank face.

fox news alert. now to the deadly bastille day terror attack in france. and today, a tribute to the victims there, with france holding a national moment of silence to remember the 84 people who were gunned down by a truck during that attack. this comes as we learn more about the suspect's links to isis. one of his relatives speaking out about that. benjamin hall is live in nice with the very latest on this story. benjamin? >> reporter: hi, martha. this city is still in shock after those tragic events. it's by walking down the promenade where this took place that you see the scale of it. for each body that was down, there is a memorial of flowers and candles. 84 of them are there. we're learning more about those people. sadly we learned among them was a uc berkeley student by the name of nicolas leslie.
11:16 am
he had been on a study trip abroad. his death takes the number of dead americans here to three. today, 40,000 people gathered along the promenade where the attack took place to observe a moment of silence. flowers marking all those spots where the bodies fell after they were mown over by the truck. we tracked down bouhlel's apartment and spoke to his neighbors. the house behind me is where mohamed bouhlel lived. neighbors described someone who was not a practicing muslim, who drank alcohol and ate pork. the question for police is were there signs they could have picked up. i'm shocked, this woman told me, he seemed a norman. this was the apartment mohamed bouhlel lived, and may well be where he planned his brutal attack. all we know is last monday he rented a truck and on thursday slaughtered 84 people on the promenade of nice.
11:17 am
the paris prosecutor today séance there were no signs of radicalization but that bouhlel had been expressing support for isis. now people in france saying should those signs have been picked up earlier? he had a criminal record, he was here illegally, his work permit had expired years ago. no signs of radicalization. that's why people here are afraid, they don't know where the next one will be. there have been three major terrorist attacks in france in the last year alone. >> we're just reeling from all of this craziness. benefjami benjamin, thanks very much. a retired veteran receives a medal of honor 50 years after his heroic act in vietnam. why president obama awarded the military's highest honor to this man. and a live look at cleveland as the republican national convention is officially under way, folks. we've been waiting for this moment for quite some time.

fox news alert, security forces getting their first test as the republican convention gets under way in cleveland. anti-trump demonstrators ignoring the security rules as they march toward the convention center. there's what's going on outside the q and outside the convention center here. supporters held a rally of their own with some in the crowd carrying firearms, which is legal in cleveland, in ohio, i should say, they have an open carry law that has been the subject of some debate over the past several days here as to whether or not it should be
11:22 am
suspended during the convention. steve harrigan live in cleveland, steve, describe for us what's happening where you are. >> reporter: martha, it's been a delicate balancing act so far. they're about one hour into this anti-trump coalition march. i guess the numbers would be roughly about a thousand people. and the key test really for security is where are they going to be allowed to march. before this all began, there was a set parade route where all groups were going to have to march. this group has broken those rules but there has not been any dramatic conflict yet. instead the police have been setting up barriers, they're making a hole for us right now. police are on bicycles instead of patrol cars, the hope is that will reduce tension. they've been setting up metal gates to shuttle protesters away from the convention. but they're not sticking to the parade route so far. no arrests, no violence, a thousand strong very vocal anti-trump protesters here,
11:23 am
martha. >> all right, steve, watching the crowd out there as they sort of mill around at this hour. and of course the police here have made it very clear that they want to allow people the opportunity to protest, that that is their right, but that they have to sort of obey, you know, within the parameters of what they want to allow people to carry out there, steve. >> reporter: we're hearing some -- it's a pretty steady chant of "these streets are ours, we're going to take over this street." but when you look at it, the numbers are not overwhelming by any stretch of the imagineation about a thousand strong. police have been diplomatic, people in yellow vests are trying to work the edges of the crowd and prevent violence from happening. it has not happened yet. they have not gotten close to the convention center but they have avoided that controlled parade route. so loosely organized coalition of all kinds of people who don't like donald trump for different reasons. some have called him a fascist,
11:24 am
some have called him anti-immigrant. a coalition of students, union members as well, many different groups here. but the numbers here not large yet, under a thousand, i would say at this point. back to you, martha. >> steve, thank you, thank you very much for the update out there. hopefully they keep the peace in this process. hillary clinton attending a different convention in ohio this afternoon. she spoke to members of the naacp in cincinnati, ohio. clinton condemned the attacks against police while acknowledging nationwide problems with police brutality. she talked about the presumptive democratic nominee, trying to highlight the differences between her campaign and donald trump's. >> my opponent in this race may have a different view. but there's nowhere i would rather be than right here with all of you. [ cheers and applause ] this madness has to stop.
11:25 am
[ applause ] watching the news from baton rouge yesterday, my heart broke. >> let's bring in the author of "fox news first," chris, good to see you. hillary clinton speaking in sin at cincinnati a while ago, trying to walk a line that will maintain her base of support and also allow her to sort of bridge the gap between the law and order candidate, right? >> yeah, it's a narrow line she has to walk, because remember, her husband and she was identified with him as a law and order democrat. as a matter of fact, the laws that are being protested in many cases by the black lives matter movement are the tough on drugs sentencing laws from the clinton era that were designed to do
11:26 am
battle against the crack cocaine epidemic. so she's part of this. the black community in america has been mistrustful against her, especially some of the tactics she used against barack obama. the poll numbers are on her side but it's not something she can take for granted. meantime, donald trump is painting her as someone against law and order, against the police, doesn't want to protect the police officers, inviting chaos. somewh she can't be stuck in that space, that's a loser. >> yesterday, when the police were shot in baton rouge, we noted how long it took for hillary clinton to come out with a statement. we heard from many politicians, from donald trump right away and others what they thought about baton rouge. it suggests they thought long and hard how they wanted to respond to that, which seems baffling when you think about it. >> if this is the dominant issue of domestic policy for this summer into the fall, if we continue with this horror, if
11:27 am
this continues to happen, this could be a very tough narrative for hillary clinton. now, donald trump is not exactly delicate in his messaging on this, when he says i'm the law and order candidate. it may be a little over the top. out of necessity she'll have to do two things. one is to say trump is insincere and an opportunist and he doesn't mean it. number two, and i think you heard that when she called into bill o'reilly, she's got to remind voters that she is a law and order candidate, that she has a reputation as being tough and ahard, and that may help he shore up some of that. >> i think you're right, that may be where we see her leaning as she moves forward here. in terms of tonight, chris, what do you expect? they have to come out of the gate strong here, get people's attention, have people sit up and say, oh, this might get interesting. otherwise they'll lose them. >> there is that. from a television planning point
11:28 am
of view, there is that. tonight the star attraction will be donald trump's wife, who we haven't heard a lot from. she would be the first first lady not born in the united states, since i believe john quincy adams' wife. so she's an interesting person. people will be tuning in for that. but the overall focus they're trying to make, what they want to push tonight is, keep america safe is their moat ttto. they want to say as a foreign policy matter, that trump and the republicans stand for law and order, for being tough, for being hard. that's the trump brand, hard, and america is in need of a little tough love. >> projecting that strength has been one of the things that has gotten him to this point. and we'll see how he conveys that to the crowd tonight. chris, thank you so much, always good to see you. see you later tonight. thanks, buddy.
11:29 am
a host of major gop leaders opting to stay home, as we said, from this event. we'll talk with rnc communications director sean spicer on what we can expect, and how can it bring the convention and the party together and move them forward, when we come back. >> i have seen more people that frankly did not like me so much, and now they're saying, what a great pick. you see the kind of reaction. he has helped bring the party together.

11:34 am
committee. sean, welcome, good to have you with us today. >> thanks for having me back. >> let's talk a little bit about what we mentioned first. is there anything to these rumblings that there is still stuff going on with the never trump group and the effort for some of these delegates to become unbound? >> no, i think this is, again, much to do about nothing. we've seen this song over and over again. and each time, they've come up empty. so again, i think it's a lot of rumbling, tweets and things like that, but there's really no substance to it. and the more we can get on with the business of the convention and on to nominating donald trump and mike pence, that's what will help us win in november. >> one more question on that, though. there was a lot of stuff out there about ted cruz today. he continues to say he's not sure if she's going to divorce t endorse the candidate yet he will be standing on the stage during a high profile speaking
11:35 am
slot in this convention. how do you square that? >> look, ted cruz got a lot of delegates in this race. i think he understands the importance of what's at stake. i'm pretty certain that when he gets up there, he'll make sure that we lay out that contrast, that we've an option with donald trump and mike pence, or we can go with hillary clinton and a left wing agenda that will continue to move this country further and further to the left. i know that ted cruz is a conservative that understands what's at stake, and his speech will reflect that. >> do you expect that he'll endorse donald trump when he stands up there? >> i'm not sure exactly how he's going to phrase it. but again, we'll leave that to him to say. we want to make everyone tune in and watch. >> all right. we sure will, we'll be on the floor watching every moment of it, sean. so in terms of the polls, you have to feel fairly good, the rnc, about the tightening we've seen in the numbers. this is the most recent nbc/"wall street journal" poll. the general election matchup
11:36 am
shows them 5 points apart. if you show the recent polls, about 3 or 4% apart. do you feel good about that? >> i do. and again, we haven't even started this convention, we're just kicking it off now with the business of the convention. once people get to know donald trump, tonight will be about make america safe again. you'll hear a lot from veterans, people who were in benghazi. topped off with a speech by milania trump. this will be a week when we learn more and more about donald trump. we learn more about the contrast with hillary clinton. and we learn more about the republican party. and i'm certain when we come out of this convention, that donald trump is going to be in the lead. >> so tell us what you expect in terms of donald trump's introduction of milania tonight. will he be in the house, will he be on the stage, will he be coming from remote? >> no, he'll be here. the question -- i'll leave it to him to enter and introduce her. but he will be here in cleveland. >> all right.
11:37 am
so we'll stay tuned. sean, thank you so much. great to see you. >> you bet. thanks, martha. so you can't come to cleveland and not check out a really cool place here, the rock & roll hall of fame. and that is exactly what i did the other day when we weren't as busy as we are now. we went over there and got an inside look at a very interesting political exhibit that they have at the rock & roll hall of fame. and here it is. take a look. here we are with gregg harris who is the ceo and president of the rock & roll hall of fame. we want you to take us through some of these items that are so iconic and are part of this louder than words exhibit. >> this is bill clinton's saxophone. think about it, bill clinton was the first baby boomer president, this young guy coming to office. he was listening to fleetwood mac, and he's playing music on a late night talk show. ♪ >> this stops everybody in their tracks, elvis presley's army uniform. >> elvis is the king, iconic.

and the idea that elvis went from the height of his stardom in the late '50s and went into the u.s. army, and he's private elvis presley, was a bit unprecedented. somebody of elvis's magnitude becoming a regular citizen. it spoke to service and selflessness and spoke to that time in american history. >> so when a lot of musicians were protesting the vietnam war, johnny cash had a very different message. >> johnny cash, rock and roll haveinductee, related to the common man. think about the songs of johnny cash. he had a number 2 country hit, it was "the one on the right, the one on the left." it was criticizing his fellow singers. >> this is the guitar from woodstock. >> think about it, one of the most important moments of 20th century history. a song that everybody knows that

11:40 am
>> well, it's a great museum, because everywhere you turn, you see songs that remind you of moments in your life. music really does connect all of us. >> sure does. what a great place. you have to check it out, next time you're in cleveland. a nice opportunity for us to do that the other day. so back to politics now, as hillary clinton and donald trump speak out about what we saw yesterday, a horrific shooting that took place in baton rouge. we are moments away from hearing from the louisiana state police and the governor there who will speak about the latest information that they have in the shooting and the investigation. and how donald trump is criticizing president obama's response to the violence. >> we are the law and order candidates. and we're the law and order party. we're going to change things around. there's going to be respect again for law and order.

what kind of first lady will she make? when we come back. >> i'll bet she gives a great speech. i will be there. i want to watch. it will be very excited. you both have a perfect driving record. until one of you clips a food truck. then your rates go through the roof. perfect. for drivers with accident forgiveness, liberty mutual won't raise your rates due to your first accident. liberty mutual insurance.

tonight will be a special moment for donald trump when he gets the opportunity to introduce his wife, melania, before she speaks tonight at the convention. most of america has a sense of melania trump but doesn't know too much about her, and this will be an important night for that. she was born in slovenia and mr. trump says she will be a big hit in his words. >> well, she's going to be speaking about her love of the country, and don't forget, she came into the country. she worked hard. she came into the country.
11:53 am
she gained legal status as the expression goes, and she is a terrific person and a terrific woman. and she is going to -- i bet she gives a great speech. >> historian cook is the author of the burning of the white house, james and dolly madison and the war of 1812. good to have you with us. >> thank you. thank you for having me. >> give me your thoughts on this, melania trump, potentially a first lady of the united states, donald trump's wife. she will speak tonight. how significant is this moment and how significant he will entry dues her? has that been done before? >> i don't know it's never been done before, but it certainly is not a very common thing. often you don't see the candidate until the very end of the convention. this is a very special moment and says a lot about their relationship and how proud he is of her, and how proud she is of him, and so i think it's a very special moment. i think it will just make it
11:54 am
that much more warm and intimate of a moment for her when she does speak about him tonight. >> how significant is it that she was been outside this country, and she has spoken in interviews about her own process of getting legal status in the united states, and how important that was to her and how she went back and forth to her home country in order to do everything in a legal and proper way, and that she feels very strongly that other immigrants need to do the same. >> i think that's very significant, and it's very historic. we have only had one other first lady who wasn't born in the united states, that was husband weiss a adams but her father was born in america and this is the first immigrant, first lady, and i think the thing that people can relate to is i her love of the american dream. that's the part about immigration that people really understand and value, and the fact that she went through the legal process will fit as well. i have a really good friend who came here legally, and that is
11:55 am
important to legal immigrants, who went through the process and worked hard. they value that. and they'll appreciate that about melania. >> i think it's so interesting in the context of the trump candidacy when you look at his views on immigration, and the way that people who criticize him, say that he is anti-immigrant, and yet his wife is about to take the podium this evening, she still has a fairly strong eastern european accent, and clearly has a great love of this country, and as we say, came here the right way. >> that's true. it's very much a counterpoint to the impressions people have about donald trump and immigration. what is also great about a first lady who speaks more than one language is when it comes to diplomacy, nothing warms a diplomat's heart when the first laid county speak a language they truly understand. and khrushchev didn't want to meet jfk in us a industry ya.
11:56 am
he wanted to meet jackie kennedy because she could speak to him in a language he understood. so this is a value to that we don't see right now but would see in a potential trump presidency down the road. >> important moment for here -- for her and the trump family as they start to roll out the introductions of their family. thank you very much. jane hampton cook. good to have you with us today. we'll be bringing you the action from the floor of the convention. much more ahead as to what is sure to be an historic week as we get to rolling. i'll be over there this evening, looking forward to getting this whole thing rolling. stay with us.
