12:00 pm
news app for continuing coverage of the convention through today ands through -- through thursday. shepard myth will be on scene with a live digital hangout. >> live from cleveland, "shepard smith reporting." >> and good afternoon from cleveland. this afternoon we have breaking news first and you are looking live in baton rouge, louisiana, where we're expecting an update hope to ambush of officers. a gunman shot and killed three officers and wounded three others elm the killer was a marine or a former marine but once a marine, always marine, who served in iraq. officers shot and killed him. yesterday they told to us expect a news conference today at 1:00 central daylight time. they've moved that to 2:00 central daylight time. so we're expecting that to begin at any moment. in fact, about three minutes ago
12:01 pm
we got a three-minute warning. our hope is to learn whether the killer had any accomplices or whether the authorities have learned if he did. they have been checking into that. of course they tell us they believe there was only one shooter, despite the fact that authorities had initially suggested that they believed there were as many as three, but today, or in the last day, they've been telling us they now believe there was but one shooter. the question is whether he had any help along the way. in the planning, whether anybody knew anything about this in advance. whether anyone else helped him prepare for this, and then they were investigating whether he had said anything online or contacted anyone about this killing in advance. we know they -- according to law enforcement sources to fox news, they'd been working to track the pings on his cell phone, go back through all of his digital records. we have learned a good deal about him. but not enough to lead us to any conclusions about why this might
12:02 pm
have happened. he had been at least on the extremities involved with a number of groups, expressed some hating -- some dislike of authority, and had been very much affected, it would appear, by the killings of two african-american men, especially the one in baton rouge. this is a picture of the scene -- pictures from the scene in baton rouge. remember the initial call was man seen walking down airline highway in baton rouge, towards the direction of the city police department but he stopped at a market, quickie market, and along the way, someone made a call in that there was a suspicious looking guy on the side of the road, carrying a weapon, and cops responded to that, and it's then we believe the three officers who were killed were at the convenience store right along airline highway, and the suspect, according to authorities, had been next door -- these are the
12:03 pm
three officers who sadly died in this attack, this ambush. and the suspect at the time was next door at a car wash as police were -- we were listening on two-way radio traffic, and you probably heard some of that. police were nearby and the suspect was at this car wash, and it's there that we later saw his body. it's there where he died in what appears to have been a shootout, with local police officers. we know three police officers were injured in this, two of them were in fair condition, actually one has been released. we'll get an update on the other who was said to have sustained nonlife-threatening injuries, and then another officer who was shot and yesterday was describe as fighting for his life. he underwent surgery, the extent of his injuries was not given to us but we did know that authorities were very worried about his condition and concerned that his fight for life was going to be a very difficult one. they said that authorities were
12:04 pm
doing all they could. in fact will carr is live at our lady of the lake regional medical center in baton rouge. while we wait for this news conference, what are we learning about the officers who died, will? >> reporter: well, shep, let me start real quick with good news. we learn one officer who was in the hospital has been released and has gone home to his family. there's another officer still here, an officer who was shot in the head yesterday morning. he is in critical condition. then of course you have the three officers who were shot and killed yesterday, all were married, all had families, as well. their names, matthew gerald, grad garafola, and montrell jackson, jackson had been widely talked about throughout the community, has -- as has all three officers, jackson, a black police officer, came out last week with an emotional statement on his facebook page about being
12:05 pm
a black police officer in the wake of the shooting that we saw in dallas and of course the protests happening here in baton rouge. jackson became a father this year, friends say he always wanted to be a father, and now his family, shep, has obviously been ripped apart as have two others with the tragic loss from yesterday. >> will carr at the hospital there in the baton rouge, thank you very much. we're expecting the governor there in louisiana, johnbell edwards to be among the speakers. the louisiana state police student, colonel michael edmondson, and governor edwardss will lead the news conference, leads have been hard to come by but the one matter which they seem certain is there was but one shooter, whether there were accomplices. let's get right to the news conference in baton rouge.
12:06 pm
>> good afternoon, thank you all for being here today to cover the ongoing events of this officer-involved shooting. the tragedy. this investigation is ongoing. there's many moving parts but we felt it important to give you an update from what we know up to this point. our speakers today will start with opening remarks by governor john bel edwards. next will be baton rouge mayor, kip holdman, colonel mike edmonson will provide a tameline. next is sheriff good at through and the walt green, and special agent in charge of the fbi in
12:07 pm
louisiana. will be posting the pictures the facebook page. we'll up for questions and i'll turn i over to governor edwards. >> thank you, doug, and good afternoon, everybody. we wanted to have this press conference today to update you on what we now know about yesterday's horrific attack on law enforcement in -- actually on the entire baton rouge community. specific information related to that attack will be given to you shortly, and then at the end of the presentation today we will take some questions as well. first, and y'all know this inc. it is not secret but the shooter was in fact gavin long. that information was not given to you yesterday by us because it had not been forensically confirmed as it was about mouth last night. he is a 29-year-old from kansas
12:08 pm
city, missouri. he came in here from somewhere else to do harm to our community, and specifically to the law enforcement officers in our community. what is telling about that is for six days prior to the violence of yesterday morning, there had not been a single arrest in baton rouge related to any protests or demonstrations arising out of the alton sterling shooting. at this point state and local officials are partnering with federal agencies to keep people safe and as governor of the state of louisiana, i have no higher priority than public safety. and i am absolutely confident that we have a team on the ground to not only complete this investigation but to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of our public. those people who live here and those people who are visiting. we have partnering with us,
12:09 pm
federal agencies, some of which you'll hear from today. i have spoken today with officials from the white house, and i will be in further communication later today with the united states attorney general, and i want to thank them for their support at this time. i want to assure everybody that this investigation will leave no stone unturned. but what i know, the actions of the law enforcement officers at baton rouge community yesterday were nothing short of heroic. they ran towards danger in order to protect the public. they rap -- ran towards danger to render aid to fellow officers. yesterday i visited with families at the hospital, and i did so also last night. these were tremendous officers, surrounded by loving families.
12:10 pm
these were good men. and we all know the story but it bears repeating now. no greater love hath any man than to lay down his life for others. and so we're going to continue to mourn the loss of the three officers who were killed, and we'll pray for the recovery for the three injured officers. this was a diabolical attack on the very fabric of society, and that is not hyperbole, not an overstatement. there is nothing more fundamentally important than maintaining law and order so that people can have good quality lives and that's what he attacked. the very fabric of our society. and that is not what justice looks like. it's not justice for alton sterling or anything else that happened in this state. it's not justice for anybody. certainly not constructive.
12:11 pm
it's just pure unadulterated evil. we're going to start our conversations here in louisiana and around our communities, with community leaders, law enforcement, government officials, faith leaders, so that we can find out together where we go from here. and there isn't any one of us who can fix this, but all of us can and will fix this problem. and certainly i don't have all the answers. and i no. it won't happen overnight. but it will happen. and i know that we're going to come out of this stronger than ever, and better than ever. there is no division in louisiana. and make no mistake, let there be no doubt, we support our law enforcement officers and our law enforcement agencies. at mass last night, in the
12:12 pm
diocese of baton rouge, they distributed the peace prayer of st. francis of assisi, and i just want to go with the first two lines of that. lord, make me an instrument of your peace. where there is hatred, let me so love -- let me sow love. the kind of love modeled by all of those police officers yesterday, and i want to direct your attention as i sum up through the words of jackson from a facebook post of july 8th and this is the last part of that post. finally i personally want to send prayers out to everyone directly affected by this tragedy. these are trying times. police don't let hate infect your heart. this city must and will get better. i'm working in these streets so
12:13 pm
any protesters, officers, friends, family, or whoever, if you see me, and need a hug, or want to say a prayer, i got you. i'm going to be followed by carl edmonson who will give you more information, as will others, and then at the end of the conference we'll take some questions. i'm sorry. mayor. >> good afternoon to everyone, and let me thank all of you for being here for us and getting our messages out to people across the country. this has been a trying day and a half for all of us. but let me again -- all of these law enforcement professionals that are here today are making
12:14 pm
sure that they get as much as we need to make sure that if there are others out there, we bring them to justice as well. let me compliment for the diligence they have shown in this role for making sure we have all of the facts as we move forward. let me also say, this morning, mayors from across the country, have been calling all day, since early this morning, from boston, to los angeles. they've been calling. but you also have orlando. where the mayor is still reeling from the disaster that happened in their city. but -- but the most touching call came from mayor ra
12:15 pm
dallas. mayor rawlins says, mr. mayor, last week we were going through the same thing that y'all are going through this week. it is going to be tough for you and the families of these officers, and it's going to be tough as we try to bring our city back together. but know that we stand ready to hold hands with you, and let people know that it's going to be tough but you will not be walking alone. mayor rawlings also said this to all of the law enforcement people and many of the other mayors said the same thing. we want you to know that when we find the details of -- we'll have representatives in baton rouge to be here for you. law enforcement, as well as government. so, today we thank them for reaching out to us. they feel our pain. and many have witnessed the same
12:16 pm
kind of suffering. and i'll just leave you with this. people said how y'all going to come back and take it from this punch in the stomach. so i thought about it this morning, and so i said all you have to do is look at jobe. jobe faced all kinds of atrocities in his life. and there are a lot of people saying, oh, just give up, man. god is not looking out for you. just give up. and then all of a sudden, even jobe's wife tried to turn him against god. but jobe made the statement, though you slay me issue will rise again. law enforcement officials, the city, this state, and this nation, will rise again. thank you, and god bless you. >> i'm colonel mike edmonson. i want to give you an update of
12:17 pm
the case. we told you yesterday we were woo provide you information. you'll see that as we move forward. just also more than 24 hours ago, when he brought us all together. think about that. what transpire at that time. so right at 30 hours. it was an ordinary sunday morning. what happened after that was anything -- what we saw was extraordinary police officers, first responders, become extraordinary. become heroes. that what i'm talking about this morning. our hearts are broken but our spirit is intact. our soul has survived an unthinkable crime committed against this community. what we'll see as we move through this and talk about these -- you'll see some photos -- come right here -- we'll go through some photos of actual scenes, mapping in just a
12:18 pm
minute. my intention here this afternoon is to take our viewers, our public, our community, on a walk through exactly what they were going through. what was reported on tv was chaotic. multiple active shooters. people were scared, worried, concerned. we'll walk them through it and you're going to see unfolding infront of you exactly what happened that day. and this ongoing investigation the most compelling piece of evidence is the video. it is a chilling and sheer brutality of the shooting. there's no doubt whatsoever that these officers were intentionally targeted and assassinated. it was a calculated act against those who work to protect this community every single day. that indeed, ladies and gentlemen, is the shooter. that is engagement you'll see that his movements are articulated. they're intact.
12:19 pm
they're combative and they're real. we are building a timeline from 8:40 yesterday morning and working backward to determine where the suspect has been. the louisiana state police is going wherever this investigation takes us, working hand in hand with the assistance -- the baton rouge police department, and officers around louisiana and the united states. this timeline from 8:40, going backwards from that, and going to look at who he may have been associated with or spoken with or anyone else involved in this assault, had any advance knowledge of his intentions. however, we are confident this suspect was the only shooter at the scene actively involved in the attack. whether officers may have been involved in some other fashion, remains to be determined. we do not believe the suspect has been in our community for at
12:20 pm
least several days. we do believe that. going to see the gun photo. this is the actual weapon. this is the one that killed those officers. you see the strap that he carried on him. that strap kept that rifle in place so that when he engaged those police officers, they were deliberate and extreme low accurate. with respect to weapon, three guns have been recovered and they're being analyzed in forensics and determining the ownership hoyt. what you see there he was armed with an iwa subsar566 caliber rival. also a springfield xd9.9-millimeter caliber pistol. you see it in front of you. and also a stags 556 caliber rifle staged on the vehicle and actually placed them inside the vehicle he could get to then opposite he was parked. a chevy malibu rental from
12:21 pm
missouri was recovered from the scene and we're working to determine whether -- where the car has been and process it for evidence. we are looking at the footprint, where did it go, what areas did it go to, where did the car come from, from the missouri area. and we'll take it wherever it takes us. one of the more challenging aspects is examining the social media footprint of the suspect. it appears he used social media extensively. you saw after the shooting yesterday, when he has been killed by baton rouge police, someone was still actively on his facebook page that had been created to say he was still alive. those are things we're dealing with, and even though many in the media discounted that and said it's a hoax, we cannot take it that way, which is why we didn't release his name immediately, even though most of y'all had that particular name. we want to go through an evidentiary factor to where we, from forensic standpoint, we can
12:22 pm
take his fingerprint through missouri, work with the fbi, obtain prints from his military background, where we can positively identify. so just because it's read about doesn't mean we haven't sought it and investigated it and vetted it, but before we released, it's based on fact, not rumor. multiple other pieces 0 evidence have been seized and we are explore thing evidentiary value, including forensic, electronics, ballistics and behavioral examinations. we continue to ask anyone with information related to the suspect or motive to call 1-800-call se -- 1-800-callfbi. we're asking you to protect the integrity of the investigation and while there's much more we know, there's much more that remains to be learned. this is a crime scene which is probably 300 yards to 400 yards. meticulous to go through that
12:23 pm
takes time and that's what you're dealing with right here. we owe it to the officers. three officers are dead, one fighting for his life. we owe it to them to do it right, and to get it right. we owe that to them. i think that the public demands nothing less. what i want to do just real quickly, just get a picture of this one -- just gives you an idea where airline highway, going northbound, toward baton rouge police headquarters. you see this expo, even though it's an older picture, we just put this together because we wanted the viewers to see this, this is where expo is, the car wash, the dq quick are he first trade tone game a bat don rouge police officer. this location. that right here is the beauty salon where we'll log through the situation exactly how it happened.
12:24 pm
we believe while this individual was in at the city, he was looking for locations to specifically target police officers. no doubt in my mind. there were citizens walking through the area. he never encountered -- completely dismissed every single one himself intentions were accurate and they were engaging, and they were all aimed at police officers. when he first comes here, this particular mart in this location, you had a sheriff's deputy, east baton rouge sheriff's deputy, working extra detail, providing security to this location, goes to multiple locations. he was at this location and a baton rouge police officer was parked right here. he came into the area, took his car and parked it right here on this area. when we saw -- we could see the
12:25 pm
shadow. multiple cameras that this location. he comes right here, tactically moving along the back part of the building, watching what is going on. he has the gun and holding that. as he comes into -- goes straight for this car, as he gets to the car, this most chilling to the sheriff and the chief, as he approaches the car, he engaged into a manner like this towards the car. you then sees there's no one in it. he then comes back, gets back in his car, does that, and noticed a baton rouge police officer vacuuming his car at the car wash. he sees that. pulls into the fitness expo, comes back around, parks his car right here. keep that in mind as we go back help then come us out, this police officer has left the scene. he left the scene. he then started making his way back around, comes book around
12:26 pm
through the area. at this point that's when the call comes in to say there was an individual, exact words, dude with a rifle, going down airline highway. so police are at the scene now and they go to where he was. comes in, along the side here, he works his way, again, down this side right here. he actually at this corner right here, instead of going right around the corner he actually comes out, so he is tactically involved, ready to fire. he comes back around these baton rouge police officers and the sheriff's deputy -- remember, that's where he was running. that was he location he was going into. when he came back around, that's two baton rouge police officers were standing right here. he shot both of them. one falls, falls right here. this location. another one is back around here. this one is dead. this one is wounded at this
12:27 pm
point. comes back around. a deputy that was with him, he goes back to a dumpster in this area right here and kind of hides behind the dumpster. he waits there and takes cover in that location with his gun drawn. he has a clear view of this police officer that is wounds right here and is lying there he can see if moving. he comes back around and he starts going to aid. think about this. he heard the gunshots, saw the guys in that area. this sheriff's deputy leaves his cover, with his gun drawn, and goes back. that is what we're trained to do. we're trained to take care of our own. he is going back to help that police officer. coming back around, sees he is dead. comes back in, comps back around and as the deputy is coming in, the shooter comes around this corner right here he sees the deputy and shoots the deputy. shoots him right then. you see movement on this guy
12:28 pm
right here and shoots him. so he killed those three, and then tactically moves back around and comes running through this -- we believe there's an air conditioning unit, goes into this area here, and way back around in back towards where his car is. ating this point you have a sheriff's deputy in his car. had gotten the license plate. we was going back in to run the license plate. he is sitting in his car. he comes back out. he shoots the deputy in the car. that's the one that is fighting for his life right now. shots to the upper torso, and you'll hear that's from the sheriff. when he is making his way around no doubt in any mind, police officers coming here, he shoots a police officer and wounds him right here. real quick, the deputy is back over here and when he was shooting back over here, these two police officers, something got his attention, a city policeman responding, he actually shot and wounds the city policeman out here. three dead, one injured at this
12:29 pm
location, he is going back, this location, he is going back to the deputy over here elm he shoots and wounds a police officer in this location right here, and let me tell you something. the responding baton rouge police s.w.a.t. team. from this location right here, at this gunman is coming across right here, that is the fatal shot where he shot the two. officer 100 yards. having the prepares of mind and taking the shot. that puts you in a position where the viewers can see exactly what was unfolding based on what they heard on television, saw on the news and heard everybody talking about it. what i want to do has -- the sheriff gautreaux to give us a
12:30 pm
run you. it's an ongoing investigation. you heard this from us all the time. the public has a right to know. we want to give them that ability. also want to protect the integrity of the case and where it is leading us to. a lot of moving parts, very large puzzle. so please keep that in mind as we provide this information to you. >> as an agency and as family we're grieving the loss of deputy brad garafola. he leaves behind a wife and four children. i know they are hurting. but i want them to know that we are here for them now and forever. they are our family. we also get can our deputies assistance they need to cope with this tragedy. we still have another deputy that is currently fighting for his life.
12:31 pm
he was shot in the head and the stomach and has extensive damage. he is currently in icu, and there is a machine helping him breathe. he is in very critical condition. we ask for your continued prayers, for his healing and for his family. and finally, we have a deputy that has nonlife-threatening injuries but serious injuries. and that's sergeant bruce sim mops. he is going through his second surgery this evening. one of many the ben from his el be to shoulder was completely shattered. he now has a titanium rod in his arm. he has other reconstructive surgeries ahead of him. we also ask for your continued prayers for healing with him as well. i want to reiterate some of what colonel edmonson said. we watched the video and watched the actions of our deputies and
12:32 pm
officers. they ran to the threat. not from the threat. and an attempt to protect and preserve life. they were ambushed by a man who was clearly targeting law enforcement. deputy garafola died tempting too got a baton rouge officer to render aid. he died as a hero. protecting and serving. so did the other officers. i think it's important we remember as we move forward, they are gone but they're not forgotten. we will be forever grateful for their service. the baton rouge city police s.w.a.t. team arrived quickly on the scene, and as the colonel said, they were able to take down the lone shooter, preventing any further injury or loss of life. i want to say this. there's no doubt in my mind, after watching those videos, and seeing how this guy moved, how
12:33 pm
he operated, his proficiency, and his determination, and i'll go back to this. the first engagement as the colonel showed you was in here,e baton rouge city officer, and wounded a second here, and he shot the third baton rouge city officer here. that city officer actually got around the corner and was crawling this way. they were out of sight of my deputy when the shooting started because they had gone back this way in the building and he stayed behind the building. when the shoot can started, he ran to take cover behind the dumpster. when he saw the officer lying there and clearly still alive, he moved along the building, and as the colonel said, was moving down the building to get to the officer to render aid. that's when the subject came
12:34 pm
from back around this side of the building and he engaged the officer. my deputy went down fighting. he returned fire to the very end. he was laying in a prone position, returning fire. we could actually see in the video the bullets that were hitting the concrete around him. once he knew he had taken that deputy out, he turned his attention back to the wounded officer. he turned around, and shot him twice. then he moved on back through here, as the colonel said. we have had one city police officer injured here, two killed, one deputy killed. he moved back to this area, and his car was parked generally here, as the colonel said already. the corporation recall got out of his unit, check the license played and had just gotten back
12:35 pm
in his unit when guy came out he started immediately firing into the car, walking that way himself attention was drawn to a second deputy parked here and which time he started firing in that direction. that was the other deputy who was shot in shoulder. they told me last night when he got hit, it just went numb, nothing. no control. i am convinced that if he would have continued in that direction, and finished off this deputy and that deputy, as he did to these other officers and deputies over here, i am convinced that the baton rouge city s.w.a.t. would not have arrived on the scene we would have had two more deceased deputies. this guy would have been in position to get in his car and go on, travel, and seek other targets. but baton rouge city s.w.a.t., you can't understand the shock -- shot that was taken here. they were necessary area right here and had to shoot through structures and took the subject down right here.
12:36 pm
>> the men and women responding to this scene yesterday are heroes. just like the men and women that put on a uniform each morning and each night. they are everyday heroes. and i ask this community to continue to keep them and their families in your prayers and i ask this community to continue to pray for peace. we will get through this. baton rouge is better than this. >> good afternoon. i stand here as a chief with a heavy heart, number one. this has been a whirlwind of 30 hours that has been devastating to the baton rouge police
12:37 pm
department and officers and the families. a also to the city of baton rouge itch want to take this opportunity to thank the overwhelming 99.9% of this community who have supported, sent me messages, send my officers messages, who have showed their support for the baton rouge police department and our state police and law enforcement in general here. it is completely overwhelming. the amount of support we have gotten. i'm not going to get into the tactics here. i'm going to stand here as a chief and as a former instructor at the academy of tactics and just tell you how proud i am of our department, our training staff, our instructors, our s.w.a.t. team. they did exactly how they were trained. without hesitation, without fear, but with courage, with
12:38 pm
methodical movement, they did exactly how they were train. they went to the fire. they didn't run. they didn't go the other direction. they didn't blow it off. they went straight too it and i could not be more proud of these officers. i could not be more proud of my s.w.a.t. team. we have been questioned for the last three or four weeks about our militarized tactics, and our militarized law enforcement. this is why. because we are up against a force that is not playing by the rules. they have not played by the rules. didn't play by the rules in dallas and didn't play by the rules here. this is why -- we don't ever want to use it, but we have to have the ability to use is when we need it, and we needed it here. several have said, this guy was going to another location. he was not going to stop here. after he was finished here i have no doubt he was heading to our headquarters, and he was going to take more lives.
12:39 pm
our militarized tactics as they're being called, saved lives here. that shot that our s.w.a.t. team made was a hell of a shot. but it had to be made. we had to neutralize the threat right there and could not let it go any further. one of the officers who ran to this fight, matthew gerald, 41 years old, served less than a year with the baton baton rougee depth. he was a devoted husband and father of two before joining the police department, let me tell you about matthew. matthew served in the united states marine corps, and served -- and the united states army. he was a blackhawk crew member and served three tours in iraq. he served his country proudly, and with honor. he served his -- his sense of service drew him to law enforcement when he got out of the military. he spent his whole life serving

this country and our city, and he is a hero. for everything that he has done. corporal mon telejackson, 32 years old, ten-year veteran. worked at our uniform patrol division. mop teleand his wife have been together ten years. montrell's son turned four months old today. montrell was a loving and devoted husband. as an academy director, i served as montrell's instructor, and for 20 weeks i tested montrell physically, mentally, and emotionally, every single day. montrell stood tall every day and never waiverred. never quit. his heart was in service to this community. a couple of days before this happened, i went down in third district and was talking to the guys trying to lift their spirits. montrell ended up giving me a
12:41 pm
pep talk. as you heard, from his post he left on his facebook page, his devotion was to the baton rouge city and to our department. and he gave -- he ended up giving me the pep talk. i didn't give it to him. that was the last time i spoke to montrell, and i'll never forget it. he is a true hero. i have something from his wife who wanted me to share this with you today, and i'll read what she said. montrell was my everything. he was an amazing husband, an outstanding father, respectful son, and a loving brother, and an amazing uncle. a trustworthy godfather and a 0 loyal friend. he loved his family and his fellow officers. now without a shadow of a doubt he loved his job and his city. knowing this is what gives me a little peace and comfort.
12:42 pm
i know he made the ultimate sacrifice and paid the ultimate price in doing what he loved. protecting and serving a city that he loved. thank you. >> yes, colonel. >> good afternoon. i'm walt green, u.s. attorney. first, we continue to keep the law enforcement victims and their families in our prayers daily. we stand here together committed as a team of federal, state and local law enforcement to investigate this horrific tragedy that was committed in our community. and i say again, it was our community. we are coordinating with federal authorities to include u.s. attorneys offices, fbi and atf and other districts as well as other official in the department of justice to investigate this mary. in baton rouge the u.s. attorney's office, federal bureau of investigation, atf, united states marshal service,
12:43 pm
and the dea, continues to provide assistance in this investigation. attorney general lynch is being made aware of every step of this investigation and continues to monitor the situation very closely. yesterday, is a said, we will continue to investigate this matter and continue to devote all needed federal law enforcement resources until justice has been served. and as the for said, no stone will be left uncovered in this investigation. we thank all of our law enforcement partners that are here today and the ones not here on the podium. as well as the mayor and the governor here in attendance for their cooperation and teamwork in investigating this case. i say to all law enforcement, you have our deepest sympathies while dealing with this horrific tragedy. and now, i would ask fbi agent to give some additional comments.
