some sort of a good-bye. that will be the moment to watch in the evening. also rudy giuliani coming up moments from now, so don't miss any of that. "the kelly file" is going to be live at 9:00 p.m. in cleveland all week. don't change the channel because bret baier is sitting right there and the drama continues next. donald trump set to take the stage here for the republican national convention. good evening. i'm bret baier. >> hi, everyone, and i'm megyn kelly live in cleveland. here we are again. >> here we are again. >> one year ago. >> right in this very arena, the first debate. >> who could forget it? we are waiting for donald trump to introduce his wife, melania. as i said, we'll also see former new york city mayor rudy giuliani in moments as the theme of the night is make america safe again. >> we have fox team coverage tonight, bill hammer and martha
7:01 pm
maccallum are on the floor here in cleveland. we start with our panel this evening, brit hume, chris wallace and tucker carlson. brit, you've been watching tonight. this first night, obviously the afternoon was a little bumpy as far as on the convention floor. but what about the night? >> well, i think a lot will depend on how melania trump handles herself. her husband is expected to make what may be the shortest speech of his life in introducing her. at least that's what he says, and the floor will be hers. and we're going to see her at greater length and perhaps in a more revealing way than we ever have. it will be very interesting. she's a different kind of person. you know she'll speak with a foreign accent. she's extraordinarily beautiful, accomplished woman and i'm looking forward to it. >> she's been a class act. even though she's come under attack, she didn't lash out. chris wallace, your thoughts about what happened today on the convention floor having been involved before? >> well, you know, i know a lot
7:02 pm
of people are saying it was an ins recollection, it was a rebellion. it was a kwengsz, and that's what happens at conventions, the minority forces try to insert their will and try to change the course of the convention, and the majority forces -- and they have the chair -- they gaveled them down. they had one of these voice votes, and the side -- the anti-trump side clearly had the louder voice, and the speaker -- the chairman of the convention at the time who had the podium, he said the no's have it and went on his merry and the losers grumbled. >> we'll see what happens tomorrow on the floor. tucker, tonight, a diverse group of speakers. a lot of emotion. we heard from people who have lost sons and daughters. we're heard about serving your country, about immigration reform. your summary of what we've heard so far. >> you're really hearing the intellectual framework of the trump campaign being articulated
7:03 pm
behind us with senator jeff sessions of alabama, who is basically saying the one thing that ties those threads together, which is what they're cu calling america. which is every decision ought to first and foremost the bulk of americans and they're arguing that it doesn't. that it benefits primarily the elite. that is the revolutionary curl at the heart of the trump campaign. that's very different than the message you heard four years ago the convention. >> brit hume, what is the purpose of the convention? >> well, the purpose of the conventions used to be, back in the good old days when they could be quite raucous, they used to be to select the nominee, to have a brawl over the news, and god knows what else. there used to be floor demonstrations that went on at length. i remember 1976 when ronald reagan's name, we already knew he wasn't going to win the nomination, but when his name was placed, the demonstration in his favor shut the convention down for more than an hour. it went on and on and on. we don't have that kind of drama
7:04 pm
anymore. i had a thought, megyn, about the dust-up on the floor today because in the aftermath of the anti-trump forces being shut down sort of ruthlessly, there's been a lot of commentary about democracy losing. these people were trying to change the rules so they could undo the results of the primaries and toss out the nominee. let's not forget that. >> let's look at the crowd welcomes former new york city mayor rudy giuliani, a trend of trump's who's probably going to give a pretty interesting speech right now about making america safe. listen. >> thank you. thank you. thank you, new york. for a new yorker for once on the ticket, donald trump.
7:05 pm
i'm here to speak to you about a very serious subject. how to make america safe. the vast majority of americans today do not feel safe. they fear for their children. they fear for themselves. they fear for our police officers, who are being targeted, with a target on their back. we pray for our police officers in dallas and baton rouge and their families. this is why our enemies see us as weak and vulnerable. donald trump has said the first step in defeating our enemies is to identify them properly and see the connections between them so we can find them and catch them. to defeat islamic extremist terrorists, we must put them on defense. if they are at war against us, which they have declared, we must commit ourselves to unconditional victory against them!
