mercedes schlapp as well as david avela. mercedes, your thoughts of the speeches tonight. melania trump, everyone waiting to hear from her, a lot of people had not heard from her up until this evening, but there is a little bit of controversy about some of the lines in her speech being very similar to some shrines in michelle obama's speech back in 2008. >> well, that's just ridiculous. as you clearly know, melania came from a communist oppressive government. last time i checked, michelle obama did not come from a communist country as well as the fact that for melania, it was very much a heartfelt speech. we know the messages are very different. obama was hope and change and trump is make america great

again. melania spoke spo frfrom the he. she wanted to talk about trump as her partner in life and the father of her child and the other children, as well. so i think it was a very gracious message from someone who has not been in the political spotlight in the past, who is not craving the attention, but is really out there specifically for supporting her husband and showing the type of man and type of temperament that donald trump has. >> not easy to get up on that stage in front of so many people. david, speaking of not creating attention, the opposite of that, you see donald trump last night, first time the convention and almost like a wwe event. you go out there to the big song, "we are the champions." he knows how to get that attention. >> he sure does. you don't spend as much time as he has in television producing a successful television show year after year and not know what people want and how to get attention to the things you see

as important. and donald trump knows that his wife is a huge asset. and he was going to do anything he can to get focused on what her message was last night, which was about him. who knows him better than she does, probably no one. and the comment about the plagiarism, the democrats realize she's a major asset for him and they will do whatever they can to try to discredit her. the funny thing is, she actually talked about traditional american values, respecting one another, working hard to get to where you want to go. as if like michelle obama from a few years ago is the only person that believes those things? and because melania also believes those things, somehow she can't say that? it's an absurd charge. >> mercedes, just overall who do you think had the best speech this evening and maybe if you felt that there was a loser?

>> well, i think there were several best speeches because i th thought when you looked at the former navy s.e.a.l., marcus really spoke from the heart. there are individuals that were heros, that trend, mothers of lost soldiers, really -- i was in the convention hall. there were people brought to tears because of their speeches. but the winner besides melania was definitely rudy giuliani. he was able to provide such a balancing message talking about the racial tensions, as well as the fallen -- police who we have lost in the line of duty. it was just so -- he brought everyone to their feet. he talked about one america. >> it was such a powerful message. david quickly your thoughts on the night. >> melania hit the home run. last night's focus was her. she did an outstanding job. for people who maybe were thinking about donald trump, she certainly has opened the door.

their guns at home. rich edson is live in cleveland with more. so how did it shape up? >> reporter: good morning. the protests have begun outside the convention. and inside the convention. you saw that moment right there, the anti-trump faction a last ditch effort after failing in the rules committee, essentially allowing the delegates to vote for whomever they want on the first ballot that could potentially derail donald trump's securing of the nomination later today. those efforts were beaten back, the chair said, look, the pro trump people have it, let's move on. there were protests. some folks even walked out. >> the motion to reconsider is laid upon the table. i'm not going to do this. >> former house speaker and trump supporter and a man once

considered to be potentially a vice presidential pick for donald trump, newt gingrich, spoke about that effort and he said essentially those folks need to concede. >> people when they lose get very intense and i think that they feel strongly about their position, but they didn't have the votes. they couldn't get it in order, they couldn't win last week on the rules committee, the platform committee, and they koochbt win today. there a point where you say get over it. he won fair and square. in the american model, usually the guy who wins fair and square, you unify around because that's what a party is all about. >> and now for the scene outside the arena, outside the convention area that's where we spent much of the day. there were a number of protests, all of them from what we've seen and talking to the police were mostly peaceful. there were pro trump protester, anti-trump protesters, and also

plenty of those who were armed and openly carrying their weapon. that's because of the state's open carry law. you're allowed to open carry in the state of ohio without a license. there was an appeal by the cleveland police department union, police officers union was saying that's not safe, they wanted the governor and the police department to ban open carry in cleveland during the time of the convention. governor john kasich and the police department said we've determined we don't have the ability to suspend that right. and so plenty of folks if in downtown cleveland who are carrying their weapons, they are not allowed to bring them close to the convention and the arena. that's pa controlled by ttrollet service and they're running their own rules. >> rich edson in cleveland, thank you. well, 12 after the top of the hour. and police stalked by a mad man, some chilling new details about the gunman who shot six baton rouge officers killing three in

"hunted" to describe gavin long's actions not only during the rampage, but in the six days prior as he tried to find locations around baton rouge that police frequented. he ended up deciding on a gas station linked to a car wash. and in these photo, you see some of the militaryesque tactics that gavin long used as he was carrying out this rampage. police are trying to figure out where he learned the tactics, where he learned how to shoot and move and then find cover. police are also looking into long's ties to black power and black militant organizations to see if he had contacts with anyone else, was inspired by anyone else, told nipples about his plans before coming to baton rouge. one of the officers who he took aim at of the three killed, brad garafola, four kids, known as a family man who quite literally ran into the gunbattle on sunday morning. we now know that he was running

to try to save a baton rouge city police officer who was shot, who was on the ground wounded and in need of help. according to the sheriff and according to the surveillance tapes, he returned fire to the very end. >> they ran to the threat, not from the threat, in an attempt to protect and preserve life. they were ambushed by a man who was clearly targeting law enforcement. deputy garafola died attempting to get a officer to render aid. deputy garafola died as a hero, protecting and serving. so did the other officers. >> reporter: and we are getting a weapons that long used, two rifles, one handgun. the rifles particularly key to understand because this lesson now learned through the blood of officers in dallas and here in baton rouge is that the vests

administration were the messages of uptdity that came out of the gop. this was the most heartfelt genuine and inclusion that we've ever seen. from giuliani's call for blue lives matter, all lives matter, from marcus luttrell's call that we can it not let america become the hell that veterans come back from when they come home here, it was a very powerful and positive evening despite outlining the failures of the current administration for sure. >> a lot of calls for unity, a lot of jabs on hillary clinton, corinna, this is a time when people are still trying to make up their decision. should hillary clinton watching this be a little nervous about how much she was attacked when it came to bringing the country together? >> well, it's no surprise, that's what happens at conventions, right? each of the opposite side of the aisle is attacked and potential nominee is attacked. we are few mull chew us

time and you can't ken that, but fwheed someone who will lead us post november and january 21st who will lead us and not divide us. and i believe that that did not happen last night. there was no unifying, there was hateful rhetoric that continues to be spoken about. and conventions historically are supposed to unify your party. and we saw chaos on the floor, we had 10 to 11 states who wanted a roll call and they were denied. that's not what a convention is all about. so next week comes the democratic national convention, we will be a stark contest to what we saw last night and this week. >> and cathy, you mentioned specifically the call for unity, that this was a party of inclusion that everyone was able to see will this evening. and it was across race, gender, creed and all else. who do you think presented that

the best? >> it's a great question and respectfully let me just gasoline with karene because i think there was no more powerful message than unity last night. there has been a significant rise in terror, but last night very powerfully i think giuliani did a phenomenal job bringing down the house and raising awareness of the inclusion of all for the fight against keeping america safe. it was very, very powerful. he had a number of powerful lines and melania trump did the same thing but from an aspect of compassion. she reminded us of the price of freedom, the importance ever society judging others on how we treat each other with respect. and i don't think we could have had a more inclusive or powering message last night. that was the message that rang true. >> and as the democrat here, what was the most powerful moment from last night? >> the most powerful moment was the chaos that was on the floor

of the convention when you had delegates who were saying that they wanted a roll call and wasn't given that, 10 or 11 states coming together and asking for that and that did not happen. what was scary -- cathy just mentioned -- hold on a second. cathy just mentioned giuliani. i'm from new york. i grew up in new york. giuliani was my mayor when i was no new york and he is not the person to come and talk about for all people unifying. this is someone who started stop and frisked in new york which was found to be discriminatory process that had to be thrown out. so this is not the person that i would put out front to talk to people that you're trying to bring to a coalition in the general electorate, to talk about unifying. that is not -- >> we'll bring this debate back next hour and we look forward to that. thanks so much. today's focus at the rnc

some. but i thought a very solid stump speech. >> a lot of people are talking about potential plagiarism here. where you put the transcripts of melania trump next to michelle obama's convention speech and how similar not only the wording is, but the messaging there. is that going to be the story that everyone is talking about today? >> well, it's already dominated the news cycle this morning p. and you're right, same words in the same order, i'm not sure what else you would call that. if those two sections are earlieerily similar. but nonincumbent spouses have not been giving convention speeches for very long. this has only happened since 1996. so if melania was looking for inspiration, she was looking to other spouses' speeches, they all follow a very similar pattern, very similar theme.

>> and to be fair, the trump campaign did issue a statement on melania trump's speech and what they said was that in writing her beautiful speech, melania's team of writers took notes on her life's inspirations like you mentioned and in some instances included fragmentations that reflected her own thinking, melania's immigrant experience and love for america shown through her speech which made it such a success. and you mentioned her inspirations. were there any missed opportunities? >> well, i think what stuck out to me was the lack of personal anecdotes. and the reason that is so important for a spouse to include in a speech like this is because they're uniquely situated to make the case that this is the person i have chosen to be my life's partner, this is the person i've chosen to be the father of my child, and they back that up with stories about how the candidate is behind the
