the united states, my wife, an amazing mother, an incredible woman, melania trump. >> it is tuesday, july 19th, and you are watching "fox & friends first" on this tuesday morning. >> and day one of the republican national convention bringing no shortage of drama with chaos breaking out on the convention floor. >> dramatic last ditch effort to block donald trump from the nomination. >> all those in favor say aye. all those opposed no. in the opinion of the chair, the ayes have it. >> a live look in cleveland at the quicken loans convention center. the stage empty, but filled with star-studded speakers. line up less than 12 hours ago,
1:02 am
the theme make america great. >> he does not give up. if you want someone to fight for you and your country, i can assure you, he's the guy. >> what happened to there is no black america, there is no white america, there is just america? >> we know the risk you're taking. and we say thank you to every police officer and law enforcement agent who is out tonight. when they come to save your life, they don't ask if you're black or white. they just come to save you. >> blue lives matter in america. >> these are truths that are self-evident to me and which i practice and they are the truths that donald trump understands and supports. >> we cannot go down this road anymore. we need to stop. we need donald trump to fix this. we have a choice in november.
1:03 am
we can go for hillary clinton or we can go for donald trump. >> we'd like a commander in chief who speaks of winning wars and not merely ending wars. we would like a commander in chief who calls the enemy by its names, who draws red lines cause sl issuesly, but enforces them rudelessly. and someone who could ham classified information. >> my message to you is very clear. wake up, america. >> the time is now. and with donald trump in the white house, we will make america great again. >> i'm concerned about our country's future and i believe we need donald trump. >> enough is enough. now is the time to make safe again. >> let me tell you why i've been
1:04 am
on the trump train from the beginning. america is in a bad spot and we need a president who will have our backs. and i can promise you this, no matter who you are, donald trump will have your back. >> i'm so used to speaking from the heart, when i have to read this, it goes wrong. so i'm crust going to go. not only do the lirsd have to support us, but we're all family and we step up and we back them up, too. the only way we surprise this, is together. to the next generation, your war is here. >> ladies and gentlemen, donald j. trump is ready to serve and lead this country as the next president of the united states. >> god bless our next president, donald trump, and god bless the united states of america. usa! >> welcome to our panel,
1:05 am
mercedes schlapp as well as david avela. mercedes, your thoughts of the speeches tonight. melania trump, everyone waiting to hear from her, a lot of people had not heard from her up until this evening, but there is a little bit of controversy about some of the lines in her speech being very similar to some shrines in michelle obama's speech back in 2008. >> well, that's just ridiculous. as you clearly know, melania came from a communist oppressive government. last time i checked, michelle obama did not come from a communist country as well as the fact that for melania, it was very much a heartfelt speech. we know the messages are very different. obama was hope and change and trump is make america great
1:06 am
again. melania spoke spo frfrom the he. she wanted to talk about trump as her partner in life and the father of her child and the other children, as well. so i think it was a very gracious message from someone who has not been in the political spotlight in the past, who is not craving the attention, but is really out there specifically for supporting her husband and showing the type of man and type of temperament that donald trump has. >> not easy to get up on that stage in front of so many people. david, speaking of not creating attention, the opposite of that, you see donald trump last night, first time the convention and almost like a wwe event. you go out there to the big song, "we are the champions." he knows how to get that attention. >> he sure does. you don't spend as much time as he has in television producing a successful television show year after year and not know what people want and how to get attention to the things you see
quote
1:07 am
as important. and donald trump knows that his wife is a huge asset. and he was going to do anything he can to get focused on what her message was last night, which was about him. who knows him better than she does, probably no one. and the comment about the plagiarism, the democrats realize she's a major asset for him and they will do whatever they can to try to discredit her. the funny thing is, she actually talked about traditional american values, respecting one another, working hard to get to where you want to go. as if like michelle obama from a few years ago is the only person that believes those things? and because melania also believes those things, somehow she can't say that? it's an absurd charge. >> mercedes, just overall who do you think had the best speech this evening and maybe if you felt that there was a loser?
1:08 am
>> well, i think there were several best speeches because i th thought when you looked at the former navy s.e.a.l., marcus really spoke from the heart. there are individuals that were heros, that trend, mothers of lost soldiers, really -- i was in the convention hall. there were people brought to tears because of their speeches. but the winner besides melania was definitely rudy giuliani. he was able to provide such a balancing message talking about the racial tensions, as well as the fallen -- police who we have lost in the line of duty. it was just so -- he brought everyone to their feet. he talked about one america. >> it was such a powerful message. david quickly your thoughts on the night. >> melania hit the home run. last night's focus was her. she did an outstanding job. for people who maybe were thinking about donald trump, she certainly has opened the door.
1:09 am
and what i heard most last night in the hall was people are fired up about hearing the children now. ivanka and the two sons. and who better than the family to tell people who donald trump is really like and really setting the stage for his speech on thursday. >> all right. david, mercedes, we'll leave it there for now. thanks for waking up so early for us. but don't go far. we'll see you again. also sean smith's monether, ver powerful speech. and it wasn't just about the speeches last night, there was some convention chaos yesterday. never trump delegates making a loud last ditch effort to dump the presumptive nominee. look at this. >> those opposed some say no. >> tempers flaring on the convention floor as protesters kick off outside with open carry activists refusing to leave
1:10 am
their guns at home. rich edson is live in cleveland with more. so how did it shape up? >> reporter: good morning. the protests have begun outside the convention. and inside the convention. you saw that moment right there, the anti-trump faction a last ditch effort after failing in the rules committee, essentially allowing the delegates to vote for whomever they want on the first ballot that could potentially derail donald trump's securing of the nomination later today. those efforts were beaten back, the chair said, look, the pro trump people have it, let's move on. there were protests. some folks even walked out. >> the motion to reconsider is laid upon the table. i'm not going to do this. >> former house speaker and trump supporter and a man once
1:11 am
considered to be potentially a vice presidential pick for donald trump, newt gingrich, spoke about that effort and he said essentially those folks need to concede. >> people when they lose get very intense and i think that they feel strongly about their position, but they didn't have the votes. they couldn't get it in order, they couldn't win last week on the rules committee, the platform committee, and they koochbt win today. there a point where you say get over it. he won fair and square. in the american model, usually the guy who wins fair and square, you unify around because that's what a party is all about. >> and now for the scene outside the arena, outside the convention area that's where we spent much of the day. there were a number of protests, all of them from what we've seen and talking to the police were mostly peaceful. there were pro trump protester, anti-trump protesters, and also
1:12 am
plenty of those who were armed and openly carrying their weapon. that's because of the state's open carry law. you're allowed to open carry in the state of ohio without a license. there was an appeal by the cleveland police department union, police officers union was saying that's not safe, they wanted the governor and the police department to ban open carry in cleveland during the time of the convention. governor john kasich and the police department said we've determined we don't have the ability to suspend that right. and so plenty of folks if in downtown cleveland who are carrying their weapons, they are not allowed to bring them close to the convention and the arena. that's pa controlled by ttrollet service and they're running their own rules. >> rich edson in cleveland, thank you. well, 12 after the top of the hour. and police stalked by a mad man, some chilling new details about the gunman who shot six baton rouge officers killing three in
1:13 am
cold blood. and donald trump is focused only on one thing, this beautiful country that he loves so much. and melania trump stealing the show. could she be the next first lady? why one guest says she could be trump's best asset. the republican convention started today. donald trump spent the past several days preparing his acceptance speech while chris christie spent the past two weeks blowing up balloons.
1:16 am
we're back with a fox news alert. brand new chilling surveillance pictures show the baton rouge cop killer stalking police moments before the his deadly rampage. >> let's get right to leland vitter who is live for us in baton rouge with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the word police are using is
1:17 am
"hunted" to describe gavin long's actions not only during the rampage, but in the six days prior as he tried to find locations around baton rouge that police frequented. he ended up deciding on a gas station linked to a car wash. and in these photo, you see some of the militaryesque tactics that gavin long used as he was carrying out this rampage. police are trying to figure out where he learned the tactics, where he learned how to shoot and move and then find cover. police are also looking into long's ties to black power and black militant organizations to see if he had contacts with anyone else, was inspired by anyone else, told nipples about his plans before coming to baton rouge. one of the officers who he took aim at of the three killed, brad garafola, four kids, known as a family man who quite literally ran into the gunbattle on sunday morning. we now know that he was running
1:18 am
to try to save a baton rouge city police officer who was shot, who was on the ground wounded and in need of help. according to the sheriff and according to the surveillance tapes, he returned fire to the very end. >> they ran to the threat, not from the threat, in an attempt to protect and preserve life. they were ambushed by a man who was clearly targeting law enforcement. deputy garafola died attempting to get a officer to render aid. deputy garafola died as a hero, protecting and serving. so did the other officers. >> reporter: and we are getting a weapons that long used, two rifles, one handgun. the rifles particularly key to understand because this lesson now learned through the blood of officers in dallas and here in baton rouge is that the vests
1:19 am
that officers wear while out on patrol done protect them from rifle rounds. and his vest did not protect nicholas tullier, he has two wounds to the chest, one to the head, currently on a ventilator in grave condition. ladies, i spoke to a couple of sources very close to this investigation and they say if he does pull through, it will be in their words a miracle, something this city could really use right now. >> very heartbreaking. leland vittert live for us in baton rouge. thank you. 20 after the hour. heartbroken and fighting for change. >> i'm here because i raised a son who believes in this country enough to give his life for it. and most of all, i'm here because we are at a cross roads unlike anything we have ever witnessed in our lifetime. >> a mother who lost her son in afghanistan taking the stage for
1:23 am
i'm here because i raised a son who believed in this country enough to give his life for it. and most of all, i'm here because we are at a cross roads unlike anything we have ever witnessed in our lifetime. and something must change now. >> this so-called leadership thanked our enemies in iran while sailors were on their knees. it's time we put someone into

office who holds the same divisions that we hold. the samts convictions that my fellow warriors and i hold. and the same convictions that my friends bled or died for. and as service members, we live by these convictions. and in donald trump's america, the only time service members will get on their knees will be to thank their god that they are americans. >> gold star mom karen vaughn and u.s. army and navy vet jason beardsley kick off the first night of the rnc calling on americans to seek a new leader who is not afraid to go after the enemy. >> here to react, our fox news contributor live in cleveland. you listen to karen vaughn talking about her son who she lost in afghanistan. she didn't just talk about the political message, she talked
1:25 am
about her stoerks it wry, it wa powerful. >> powerful firsthand stories. karen vaughn as you said lost her son in afghanistan and jason beardsley himself a special operator that served in in multiple theaters. these are men and women who have given everything. and if you love our military and our vets, then you believe america should lead in the world stage and last night was a great night for you. because it was also tom cotton, marcus luttrell, general flynn, a navy s.e.a.l. who serves in congress. we haven't seen a lineup of pro military folks like this since really 2004 when we were in the middle of the war and george w. bush's re-election campaign. so they really brought down the house with not just one liners, but people who have lived the threat for 15 years since 9/11. >> and if there was a unified speech amongst them, what do you think that was?
1:26 am
>> well, the unifiedcus luttrel when he said your war is here. you don't have to go fighting for it. and i think the overall theme was, listen, we've seen this enemy. we understand how vicious it is. and we've had a commander in chief who has decimated our military, who won't fight to win, spts rebuildiisn't rebuild stand by our allies, won't name the enemy. and they say it as people who have lost men and women, sons and daughters on the battlefield, and served right there, looked the enemy in the eye. that is powerful and the american people need to see that and hear that and believe that donald trump would be the type of leader that would support them in that fight. >> rudy giuliani said we know who you are and we are coming for you. >> really was a powerful night. >> fanfantastic. >> thanks for being with us. the time is 26 after the hour.

national convention. it is tuesday, july 19th, you're watching "fox & friends first." i'm abby hunts man. >> and i'm heather childers. the stage set for day two of the republican national convention as we take a live look at the quicken loans arena. last night's theme was make america safe again. tonight's theme make america work again. >> but in that very same spot less than 12 hours ago, it was make america safe again as you said and the speakers criticizing president obama's foreign policies and arguing a hillary clinton presidency won't keep us safe. >> it's putting all of our lives at risk. >> barack obama and hillary clinton brought us isis and brought down benghazi. i shudder to think how many times our flag will fly at half blast if hillary clinton is in the oval office. >> hillary clinton has failed to
1:32 am
stop the expansion of terrorism. her policies in libya, afghanistan, iraq and syria have created more safe havens for terrorism. >> under barack obama, we have no coherent strategy to protect our citizens. anden der hillary clinton, it will be more of the same. >> and now hillary clinton is promising more of the same, open borders, executive amnesty, and the surge of syrian refugees. over and over obama and hillary apologized for america and allowed jihadists to spread like wildfire. we cannot afford hillary in the white house again. >> benghazi was about opportunities, opportunities taken when we defied the stand down orders, an opportunity

administration were the messages of uptdity that came out of the gop. this was the most heartfelt genuine and inclusion that we've ever seen. from giuliani's call for blue lives matter, all lives matter, from marcus luttrell's call that we can it not let america become the hell that veterans come back from when they come home here, it was a very powerful and positive evening despite outlining the failures of the current administration for sure. >> a lot of calls for unity, a lot of jabs on hillary clinton, corinna, this is a time when people are still trying to make up their decision. should hillary clinton watching this be a little nervous about how much she was attacked when it came to bringing the country together? >> well, it's no surprise, that's what happens at conventions, right? each of the opposite side of the aisle is attacked and potential nominee is attacked. we are few mull chew us
1:35 am
time and you can't ken that, but fwheed someone who will lead us post november and january 21st who will lead us and not divide us. and i believe that that did not happen last night. there was no unifying, there was hateful rhetoric that continues to be spoken about. and conventions historically are supposed to unify your party. and we saw chaos on the floor, we had 10 to 11 states who wanted a roll call and they were denied. that's not what a convention is all about. so next week comes the democratic national convention, we will be a stark contest to what we saw last night and this week. >> and cathy, you mentioned specifically the call for unity, that this was a party of inclusion that everyone was able to see will this evening. and it was across race, gender, creed and all else. who do you think presented that
1:36 am
the best? >> it's a great question and respectfully let me just gasoline with karene because i think there was no more powerful message than unity last night. there has been a significant rise in terror, but last night very powerfully i think giuliani did a phenomenal job bringing down the house and raising awareness of the inclusion of all for the fight against keeping america safe. it was very, very powerful. he had a number of powerful lines and melania trump did the same thing but from an aspect of compassion. she reminded us of the price of freedom, the importance ever society judging others on how we treat each other with respect. and i don't think we could have had a more inclusive or powering message last night. that was the message that rang true. >> and as the democrat here, what was the most powerful moment from last night? >> the most powerful moment was the chaos that was on the floor
1:37 am
of the convention when you had delegates who were saying that they wanted a roll call and wasn't given that, 10 or 11 states coming together and asking for that and that did not happen. what was scary -- cathy just mentioned -- hold on a second. cathy just mentioned giuliani. i'm from new york. i grew up in new york. giuliani was my mayor when i was no new york and he is not the person to come and talk about for all people unifying. this is someone who started stop and frisked in new york which was found to be discriminatory process that had to be thrown out. so this is not the person that i would put out front to talk to people that you're trying to bring to a coalition in the general electorate, to talk about unifying. that is not -- >> we'll bring this debate back next hour and we look forward to that. thanks so much. today's focus at the rnc

shifting to president obama and his so-called failure to put americans back to work. >> some of the biggest names in politics taking the stage joined by members of donald trump's inner most be peter doocy is live in cleveland. >> reporter: the big theme tonight make america work again and the whole idea of the program is to present donald trump's business record and have speakers come out to explain why they think the republican is the one to revitalize the economy and create jobs. some of the headliners who will make that case, chris christie who hinted yesterday that now he's interested in possibly being attorney general. dr. ben carson, another former rival turned early endorser, speaker of the house paul ryan whose speech will be interesting given the ruckus on the house floor. ultimate fighting championship president dana white will be here. and then two of trump's adult

children will hit the stage. donald trump jr. teased his speech last night. >> it's not a campaign, it's a movement. the people who built this country, the people who made this country great, hard working americans left in the dust in favor of these activist groups, half of them are criminals, we would rather be nice to criminals than the people who support this condition and make it great. >> and donald trump left town with his wife melania after her remarks. they will watch today's proceedings from new york city. but trump's running mate, governor mike pence, is here and he will be in cleveland for all of the proceedings until thursday night. back to you in new york. >> looks like it will be fun again. the ultimate fighter person is speaking, that -- i wonder if they will come in with the smoke like donald trump it. >> dana white. all right. thank you very much. >> we'll wait and see.
1:40 am
40 now after the hour. the rnc kicking off with melania trump delivering a message of hope for the future. >> if i'm honored to serve as first lady, i will use that wonderful privilege to try to help people in our country who need it the most. >> but did her speech fall short? why our next guest says that there was a major missed opportunity.
1:43 am

stealing the show making the case for why she thinks donald trump is the best man to lead the country. >> so can she be the next first lady? and does she impact his race? or how does she do that? here to weigh? is lauren writght, author of on behalf of the president. thank you for joining us so early today. >> good morning. >> first of all, your overall thoughts on her speech last night. >> well, i think she gave a very solid standard campaign stump speech. a speech that surrogates try to give and she really proved the point that she can do the communication role that the first lady is required to do. so i thought it was a solid speech, very much in line with what nonincumbent spouses of presidential candidates speak about, perhaps a little too close for comfort according to
1:45 am
some. but i thought a very solid stump speech. >> a lot of people are talking about potential plagiarism here. where you put the transcripts of melania trump next to michelle obama's convention speech and how similar not only the wording is, but the messaging there. is that going to be the story that everyone is talking about today? >> well, it's already dominated the news cycle this morning p. and you're right, same words in the same order, i'm not sure what else you would call that. if those two sections are earlieerily similar. but nonincumbent spouses have not been giving convention speeches for very long. this has only happened since 1996. so if melania was looking for inspiration, she was looking to other spouses' speeches, they all follow a very similar pattern, very similar theme.
1:46 am
>> and to be fair, the trump campaign did issue a statement on melania trump's speech and what they said was that in writing her beautiful speech, melania's team of writers took notes on her life's inspirations like you mentioned and in some instances included fragmentations that reflected her own thinking, melania's immigrant experience and love for america shown through her speech which made it such a success. and you mentioned her inspirations. were there any missed opportunities? >> well, i think what stuck out to me was the lack of personal anecdotes. and the reason that is so important for a spouse to include in a speech like this is because they're uniquely situated to make the case that this is the person i have chosen to be my life's partner, this is the person i've chosen to be the father of my child, and they back that up with stories about how the candidate is behind the
1:47 am
scenes away from the cameras when no one can see them. so i think that the fact that they're uniquely situated to do this and that was missing from mrs. trump's speech is something to note. >> i know what it means to be an outsider. she certainly has a very interesting story to tell. lauren wright, thanks so much for being with us early. >> thank you. the time now is almost 10 until the top of the hour. and rudy giuliani, we've been talking about that, kicking off the rnc with a passionate speech. >> there is no black america, there is no white america, there is just america sglfrngts. >> sglnch social media is on fire and we'll be live in cleveland to break it all down next.
