remember you are outnumbered, sir. >> thank you. food to be back. sandra: you are a busy man around here. you are running everywhere. >> good to see you. >> good to see you. >> and we're inside today. we'll talk about that later. i enjoyed it tremendously at my desk, i really do. the whole chris wallace aspect of it. we'll talk about. harris: more on video later. sandra: good to have all of you. let's begin with day two of the rnc, which kicks off at 5:30 p.m. eastern. party members will formally nominate donald trump as their presidential candidate. dozens of speakers will focus their remarks around the theme. of the night, make america work again. and lay into the obama administration's handling of the economy. house speaker paul ryan and two of mr. trump's former rivals, chris christie, and ben carson, just some of the prime time speakers. yesterday's theme, make america

safe again, came with the nation reallying yet again from the senseless murders of police officers gunned down in the line of duty in baton rouge. sheriff david clarke and rudy giuliani bringing down the house. >> i would like to make something very clear. "blue lives matter"! in america. [cheers and applause] so many actions of the occupy movement and "black lives matter" transcends peaceful protests and violates the code of conduct we rely on. i call it anarchy. >> when they come to save your life, they don't ask if you are black or white! they just come to save you! what happened, what happened to, what happened to there is no black america, there is no white america, there is just america!? what happened to that it? where did it go? sandra: another emotional highlight of former navy seal marcus luttrell, so passionate what he had to say on that stage, he ditched the prompter, listen. >> i'm so used to speaking from the heart when i have to read this it goes wrong. so i'm going to go. you ready? [cheering] not only dot leaders have to step up and support us but the family. those of us we're all family. we back them up too. not only that we hold them accountable for every position and office they hold. either way, only way we survive this is together, not apart. in order for any life to matter, we all have to matter, you understand? sandra: a lot of people loved that moment. a very emotional moment. before we start talking, bret, about day two, what did you make of day one? >> listen it started off a little bit bumpy because of the delegates on the floor and that whole dust-up about opening up

the rules, but, when you got to the speeches and the emotion that is really what they wanted out of day one, the rnc. obviously melania trump really delivered a great speech. a lot of focus today is on the two paragraphs which we can talk about a little bit later but i think that overall substantively they got what they wanted out of the night. tonight, is a different set of things. you will have the official nomination, the name into the nomination. there could be some dust-up there on the floor. and then you have speakers that we're very familiar with. sandra: congresswoman, what do you think so far of the rnc? >> i think it is off to a good start. i saw the dust-up on the floor yesterday. they had their time to have their say. now it is time to unite and get behind the nominee. and getting all of the procedurals out of the day, out of the way day one. that is the right thing to do. then you focus to now we do have our nominee.

he is the nominee, 15 million people have come into our primaries. the people have spoken. and what they want to do is to see the republican party welcome them. it means big tent time is here. and we need to rise to the occasion. sandra: harris, every time i talk to you you are so excited about every speaker, one after another. you've been enjoying it. >> you know, i was in the skybox last night. we were broadcasting. i spent time with meghan mccain and david webb on radio last night. each person that came out, sandra, brought such reality. made me think, well the nominee is from reality television. you could feel that sort of unscripted -- maybe, maybe officer, as you saw the navy seal luttrell, i'm throwing out the prompter. there was no ownership people. i thought it made the room electric. >> actually really liked rudy giuliani took over showmanship we see from donald trump. i like maybe he will get out all the aggressiveness, intensity,

the emotion, out with his sure sure -- surrogates and hopefully donald trump will come out thursday acting presidential. i like that a lot. you talk about the kerfuffle, we'll talk about later in the show, unless there is another option, another option for people that can't get behind trump i agree it is only helping the democrats. sandra: we're looking at a day, congresswoman, it will be a day about make america work again. we'll watch republicans and speakers on the stage make the case why americans aren't better off than they were eight years ago at least economically. >> very true. when we're out doing town halls one of the main things that comes up especially from women, national security is the number one issue. jobs and economy is the number two issue. wage stagnation is chief among those. they want to make certain they have the ability to do better for their families. and gop has an opportunity

tonight to change the moniker from grand old party to great opportunity party. that should be the job of everybody on the stage. harris: one thing i picked up on, you were talking about the big tent, there was a lot of that going on last night. diversity from every gender, race, perspective, cultural, you had the mom who lost her son. she said i will call them illegal aliens who took my child from me. i have the right to say that because she was an immigrant. >> scheduling, the benghazi moments were really emotional, the mother. >> of everything that mother, i got teary and i'm not overly emotional person, most powerful. feel her pain in the room. if you like hillary clinton, watch that speech and come back. >> i think scheduling was a bit of a problem, you had joni ernst, was a big speaker, wanted her out there in prime time time, everything kind of got pushed back. so she didn't speak until way late. a lot of people were off the air. a lot of people, delegates had actually left the floor.

forces opposed to donald trump tried and failed to make one last stand. [shouting] >> we want trump! we want trump! harris: anti-trump delegates want ad state by state roll call vote on the conventions rules, a last-ditch effort to unbind gop delegates and let them vote their, quote, unquote conscience. charles krauthamer what may behind some of the most intense party discord we've seen in quite some time. >> it is rocky. it reflects the division in the party, far more than any other convention we can remember. it is usually a television show. everything is scripted. it is not because there's a large somethingment that is anti-trump. of course of course it will prevail this is about ted cruz. it is about 2020. harris: house majority leader kevin mccarthy has a much different take than charles. >> no different than any other convention. you always have a little of that.

the time is now to unite. i will tell you, i talked to a number about members that weren't there yet and after the selection of mike pence, they're there. i think coming out of this week you will see a lot of uniting of the republican party. harris: soon to be official nominee, donald trump himself, brushed it off. >> there wasn't really a vote about me t was about changing rules in the year 2020. >> they wanted rules changed now but have never taken place until 2020. >> we got more votes than anybody in the history of the republican party. it has never happened like this. and, i think the press like to build it up but it really was about rules changes for 2020. harris: so, congresswoman blackburn, kind of what you said. you get this out. this is making democracy of make baking the cake going forward. do you have this kind of faith this isn't going to come back, this is how it is going to be? >> i think the focus shifts now, how are we going to stop hillary

clinton, federal bench, supreme court judges, all of that is up for grabs and people want everybody to get on the same page. they have had their say. they made their point. now get over yourselves. when we focus on personality we lose. when we focus on policies, principles, people, we win. harris: so, bret, here is how the world, some are looking at it. sky news headline yesterday, mutiny!, in the united states. no, no. this is how it goes. this is how it is supposed to go. you were there. how did it go? >> listen it, was rocky. if they had the choice that is not how they wanted to start the convention. those headlines were going to come from that moment because there were a lot of reporters right down there. they didn't win on opening up the rules but this one stand. we could have another stand today, with all due respect, congresswoman, there could be an effort to put ted cruz's name officially into nomination, whereby, not, that he is threatening donald trump, that he is not going to get nomination, but he gets all the

votes counted and comes down tomorrow night and deliver this is speech to be like reagan in 1976. harris: can i ask you a question? is ted cruz in the back, like a fighter who might have to take over? is he back there doing call list list -- call list tenics. >> he is not. donald trump is the nominee. this as he mentioned is about 2020. >> also about showcasing the republican party for not everyone is the trump party. still a party of conservative values of ronald reagan. if donald trump wins, then ostensibly becomes the donald trump party. you know what the difference between me and bernie sanders fan is, the difference i didn't vote for donald trump. i didn't want him to be nominee. i'm not a conspiracy theorist who thinks this has been stolen from me. he won fair and square through the primaries. i don't like it. i don't like what is happening. he is nominee and he earned it. i don't want the republican party turn into the democratic

party, conspiracy theorists screaming all the time voting for hillary. >> another thing to remember, tomorrow night is mike pence's night. ted cruz and mike pence are friends. they come from the conservative movement part of the party. i don't think ted cruz will want to take away from mike pence and his night tomorrow night. harris: interesting. sandra: paul manifort's words, trump's campaign manager, there is no longer a stop trump movement. 94 to 95% have come together. meghan: they're not giving alternative. if there was real alternative -- it is symbolic to set ted cruz up for 2020. i think that is a little -- >> i'm warning you today could be little delayed calling out of delegates putting the name into the nomination, we could have something that last as longer than people think. harris: a little chippy as they say in hockey? sandra: as the gop is working to unite the party last night's convention speakers getting together on one major theme, slamming hillary clinton.

former new york city mayor rudy giuliani, accusing clinton of dereliction of duty as secretary of state failing to keep americans safe. watch. >> hillary clinton's experience is the basis for her campaign. hillary clinton's experience is the exactly the reason she should not be president of the united states. >> barack obama and hillary clinton brought is isis and brought down benghazi. i shudder to think how many times our flag will fly at half-mast if hillary clinton is in the oval office. sandra: there was also an emotional speech by pat smith, mother of one of the victims killed in the benghazi terror attacks. >> i blame hillary clinton personally for the death of my son. that is personally. that's right. hillary for prison. [cheering] she deserves to be in stripes.

sandra: meantime clinton stepping up her own attacks last night accusing trump of being the most dangerous candidate ever to run for president. >> no self-discipline. no self-control. no sense of history. no understanding of the limits of the kind of power that any president should impose upon himself. he has shown none of that. what he has laid out is the most dangerous, reckless approach to being president than i think we have ever seen. harris: but he does know how to use email. sandra: what do you think, is hillary clinton the great unifier of this divided gop, congresswoman? >> let me tell you something about hillary clinton. she has basically one years of experience 30 times over. she has never really done anything other than government work, if you will. not the private sector. not creating jobs. this clinton foundation is a

ruse in and of itself and i think that people are going to look at that and say, really what has she done outside of the halls of government? and the answer is crickets. there is not a lot there. that weighs heavily, and rudy spoke to that last night. i think he was right to do that because uniting against hillary is unifier for the gop. sandra: of course, bret later on or meghan you will be covering, paul ryan stepping up on the stage tonight, chris christie. will hillary clinton be their target? >> i think it is as simple do you feel safe right now? we had five terrorist attacks in the last month. isis is rising. it is a cancer that is spreading everywhere that we have done nothing. the obama administration has ample opportunity to defeat we refuse to do it. it is that simple. do you feel safe under president obama? likelihood you don't. if you want to extend a third term of obama, feel free to elect hillary clinton.

>> i would add one more thing, would add one more thing, donald trump has to get over a hurdle saying okay, he can be president. you know, in their mind, how they feel they have to look at this at end of the week, rnc hopes i think he gets to that point. also if he can be, they hope a little bit more likeable by the end of this week and his negatives go down a bit, they're both, they have high negatives in the polls and if they're one-on-one, if he gets any sort of bounce, some of those swing states become a lot closer. meghan: a lot of people like mike pence. i think it is huge error he didn't choose someone with foreign policy experience. a general. >> he has some. he was on the house foreign affairs committee. >> meghan: i want someone with military experience with things he said about p.o.w.s and things he said about veterans. i think it would be very helpful. sandra: we'll hear from two of donald trump's kids, tiffany and donald, jr. will be taking to

♪ harris: i'm so excited, we're in cleveland for the rnc convention. in case you didn't know i want to say it tonight. family production continues for the rnc, you can watch it on fnc when tiffany trump and donald trump, jr., but their remarks come over controversy amid melania trump's keynote address, claims it mirrors part of obama's speech in 2008, the dnc event. >> your word is your bond. you do what you say and keep your promise. that you treat people with respect. >> that your word is your bond. that you do what you say you're going to do.

that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them and even if you don't agree with them. harris: campaign chairman paul manifort is defending trump's wife today. >> there was nothing that she did in that speech that she thought was anybody's words but herself. her speech last night was a very poignant presentation of the person she knew and really of her coming to america and what it meant to her to become american citizen and how important are her husband's vision and plans for making this country a better place to live are to her and to her family. harris: all right. so bret, i have heard everything from it was a mistake to the speechwriter should have known better to what are you hearing? >> well, it has to be the speechwriter who is the final guard of that speech. obviously the person who is delivering it.

i don't think anybody in politics i talked to is blaming melania trump. she delivered the speech very well and told the story. when you left the speech, a lot of people were saying, gosh, that was the speech of the night, however, this is malpractice for a speechwriter. if you kept going on that speech, there is another paragraph -- harris: other problems, where is that. >> that you hear michelle obama. i think this is going to be real problems internally at the trump campaign. sandra: but bret, people who are going to say, she spoke about values that you work hard for. and then you compare it almost, verbatim in michelle's obama's speech but aren't these themes many potential first lady was bring up on the stage trying to talk about their husband? >> i talked to dr. ben carson on the floor just moments ago. harris: want to show a little bit of that. >> can we show that? harris: okay, let's watch it. >> i know that a lot of the left-wing media made a big deal out of similarities between

melania and michelle obama and the past because the speeches were so good and they want to distract you but what we should be celebrating is the fact that a democrat and a republican have similar values and they are values that really resonate with america. that's something to celebrate. >> now that is one way to take it. i mean, there is charge of plagiarism and celebrating shared values. that is a different -- harris: it is a warm spin. >> a warm spin. harris: congresswoman? >> we have to realize anytime a republican says or done something you have to be basically above reapproach. and something didn't get cleared. but there again, how many times have i used phrase, my parents raised me. my word is my bond, and there are not a copyright to in existence on those phrases. >> but congresswoman, you wouldn't deliver a speech that the first lady, two paragraphs. >> that is exactly right. you have got to have a speechwriter who is going to

make certain all of that is double, triple checked. harris: i want to come to you, meghan, on a point, because i think i know where you're going with this. it is all over youtube right now. there is another section of that speech, particularly millenials are picking up on could be put to music. >> she says i'm never going to give you up. lyrics from the song people are putting together. point of all this, i want to say something melania trump did fan taste tick job last night. whoever wrote it did incredible disservice and on perspective first lady. i don't know who works on this, writing speech like that is intimate thing to do, capturing her toning close to what michelle obama did. we should talk about donald trump who is presidential. we have memes of rick rolling.

♪ meghan: this week is on donald trump as he prepares to deliver his big speech thursday night. the trump campaign confirming he is already consulted with two former speechwriters for ronald reagan. one of whom contributed to reagan's famed, tear down this wall speech in 1987. meanwhile convention chairman reince priebus brushing off any concerns telling abc's "this week," he thinks trump will have his own reagan moment. >> i think thursday night's a critical night for him delivering a great speech, the balloon drop. the people in this country saying, i can see donald trump being in the white house. i think he is presidential. and it is the same thing that happened in 1980 when the bottom fell out of carter. when people said, ronald reagan can be president, i can trust him and i see him in the white house.

meghan: note, congresswoman, i'm really looking forward to thursday night. what do you think the reagan moment he needs to do? >> i think what we'll hear from donald trump is, how we become one again, how we unite. that is the theme for that evening. and to put the focus on that, to have him give that speech to lay out a prepared text, as to what we're going to do, to get the country united around a common vision, a common goal, returning to that legacy of service and sacrifice and then, his family, all being there with him. the pence family all there, i think it is going to be a tremendous night. i'm looking forward to that. harris: you know, i'm wondering, bret, is this sort of thing donald trump would mention a hillary clinton in or not? >> oh, yes. there is going to be some, i think mention of hillary clinton. i think it will probably fall under the line that he usually uses which is "crooked hillary" at some point in the speech but i do think there will be, as

meghan mentioned a difficult tone to the speech than we usually see with donald trump. i don't know who is working on it specifically but i know they have been working on it and -- harris: maybe a different speechwriter who worked on melania trump's speech? >> maybe so. it has to be a mix of classic donald trump he used on the campaign trail and kind of forward-leaning vision, donald trump that it gets those people as i was talking about before, he can be president. meghan: he is known going off message and going off speech. if he can write a beautiful speech and he can take it on his own which can be entertaining, right, sandra? sandra: he ha halves gotten where he is by candid speeches, unscripted speeches. the fact he is sitting down, consulting people what to put in the speech is important but the delivery will be everything, right? donald trump, is there going to be a change in tone. >> i think it will be rally the troops and what are we going to rally around?

you wrap up week, national security, jobs, economic security, making america work again, making america one again. that is his task on thursday night. >> one of the most powerful lines last night from rudy yule reference to barack obama in 2004, in boston, whatever happened to in is no white america, no black america, whatever happened to that? there are people in the current environment, who really can relate to that. harris: that i think we can all relate to that, considering what we just covered on sunday, what happened to those police officers. >> great opportunity to impart the american dream. harris: so you're going to be on stage too. >> yes. harris: before donald trump speaks on thursday, there are some other big names who are also taking the stage including our guest, tennessee congresswoman marsh that blackburn. she also spoke at the past two conventions, was once a reported vice-presidential contender. sandra: i wish camera was on

her. >> i'm excited about it. yeah, i think it is going to be a great night, yes, i've been working on my speech. harris: is that your speech right there? >> it is all here. harris: do you write your speeches yourself? how does it work? >> being a writer i like to work with one person. i worked with two people on this someone from the campaign and ashley elizabeth graham who worked with me in my office at one point in time and is a great speechwriter. so, yes, i have the input into this. i did the framework myself. then i have them help me buildout the language. and i'm really excited. i totally support mr. trump in this effort. i believe in what he wants to do with our country and getting us back on track. and so i'm going to do my part. harris: so give us -- >> as part of the trump train i think it is being called. harris: we've been sharing all week, bret, that meghan has been to every convention including

the last, very first one, 1984 when you were in mommy's tummy. >> my mom was pregnant with me. harris: i'm curious to know what you would like to hear from the congresswoman on thursday night? meghan: i have a soft place in my heart for a strong conservative woman. i would like you to do that. [laughter]. i can't help it. i love to see, you speak out about uniting the party, making speaking out again for women's issues and uniting women. really hitting home why the republican party and conservatism is a place that welcomes women. there is really gross narrative in the media, there is war against woman. always found it so irresponsible and i would love to hear something on that. >> we champion women and we champion opportunity for women. we realize that women are multitaskers and you know, as i always tell my kids and grandkids, i'm the chief mom in charge. harris: all right. there we go! i like that title. can i borrow that? donald trump is working to sway so-called security moms who may put their concerns about their safety over any other issues.

sandra: last night's make america safe again convention theme offering donald trump a chance to sway so-called security moms, married suburban women who may put their national security concerns above some of the controversial things trump has said about women. the speakers included jamil shaw, who lost his son to an illegal immigrant who had just been released from jail. >> only trump called me on the phone one day to see how i was doing. only trump will stand against terrorists and end illegal immigration.
