the theme last night was get america back to work. one of the things that during the three hour prosecution really last night of hillary clinton they made it very clear including don jr., look, she's not going to work for america. just look at some of how she has deleted, key word there, our problems. here he is once again. >> we're going to elect a president who will work with everyone to pass legislation that will make our country great again. a president who will give us a tax code that will free the american economy and end special loopholes for the wealthy. a president who will give us an immigration law that protects american citizens and gives them jobs. a president who will repeal and replace obama care without leaving our most vulnerable citizens without health care and who will do it without destroying medicare for seniors as hillary clinton has proposed. a president who knows we can't simply delete our problems but

he helped last night, but everybody has to help in this cause who stands in the leadership of the republican party and he set the right tone, but you have to keep following it through. we have 13 weeks and it's going to occupy considerable part of each one of those 13 weeks. >> i thought he was solid but only mentioned donald trump twice. >> carl and i agree on this, conventions are the start of the process of bringing a party together. when you had a knock-down, drag out the way the gop has this year, you're going to have these -- the bursts that happen on the first day of the convention on the rules. things are going to happen. it's a slow process. it could take all the way to november to actually get to 90, 100% unified. that's what we have to see. steps are being made. there's progress being made but there's still a long way to go to unify the gop. >> let's listen a little of paul ryan last night. >> everyone is equal. everyone has a place. no one is written off.

tonight. congratulations, dad, we love you! >> reporter: now, a lot of state chairs of the delegations were very enthusiastic like that, maybe not as enthusiastic as the nominee's son, but there was a little bit of trouble. after everything was wrapped up, alaska said that they wanted a recount because they looked up and they saw that all of their delegates had been given to donald trump. they got reince priebus and paul ryan to stop going. they wanted some delegates going to rubio and cruz. they said sorry, alaska and utah, they wanted similar details. you can't give any of your delegates to cruz or rubio because their names were not entered into nominations, so they're all going to trump. that's what happened. and at the end, a very rare message via live remote from trump tower up on this screen

vetted. any way, we are in the center of one of the great medical communities in america. >> cleveland clinic. >> you have the university hospital system. a huge employer, really has done a lot to lift this city. 10 to 20% of the doctors in these two massive health institutions are muslim. and they fear that any impediment to muslim immigration could stop -- could hurt the need that they have, the desperate need they have here. so there is a group that started -- stand together against trump. it's doctors protesting any kind of muslim professional integration. here is one. >> nationwide about 10% of physicians are muslim. many of these are immigrants and cleveland particularly is known for its bio medical research and its great hospitals and clinics and we have a higher percentage. >> a lot of people are just coming here to find better lives for themselves. my parents came here in the '80s to pursue an education and

supporting himself. what about ted cruz? what can we expect tonight? >> well, ted cruz was one of the finalists in the primary process. we just felt he deserved a chance, an opportunity to speak at the convention. he had delegates that were elected which you saw reflected last night, unlike four years ago when the romney forces decided they didn't want anybody who had votes to show those votes in the final tally. anybody who earned the right to have delegates through the process should have those delegates reflected in the final tally of the convention. that happened last night. ciated it. he is coming here to speak. he has a message that resonates with donald trump's message, government is broken, that bureaucrats care only about themselves and that the american people are on a downward slide. he'll be talking about those things. those message are consistent with donald trump's. we're pleased he is speaking. we're pleased that governor walker spoke. that chris christie -- ben

carson spoke, chris christie spoke. we had a number of those 16 people who stood up here and honored their pledge and we're happy for them. >> okay. so far you've had -- you know, you gave last night a great night before mrs. trump, melania, we thought the speech was terrific and some people realized, wait, it seems like some of the passages from her speech were identical to michelle obama's speech years earlier. some have suggested the first draft that was handed in didn't have any of those passages. can you please, paul, explain what happened? >> well, i wasn't involved in the process. it was a collaborative process, what came in where, i don't know. what i do know is that melania trump feels that reflects her personal journey from slovenia to the united states to becoming a american citizen to falling into the love who she thinks has so much to offer to america. for people to say that was something that it wasn't, you

cruz screaming to the front because he was the most critical of the republican leadership in congress. i think this was more aimed in response to barack obama. >> it gets to why the party is -- so much of the convention is to pull the party together. because of the fight that happened, they're spinning a lot more of this convention attacking hillary clinton mostly to pull a party together, not yet broadening out and getting a positive, his son did a better job of that last night than anybody so far. >> he did come out of the gate and he said my dad grew up in queens. now you look at new york city, there's so many buildings with his name on it. now here we are in politics, no one thought he would do well in it. listen to what he said last night. here is a clip of part of his speech. >> i know when someone tells him something is impossible, that's what triggers him into action. when people told him it was impossible for a boy from queens to go to manhattan and take on

developers in the big city, rather than giver up, he changed the skyline of new york. i've seen it time and time again that look in his eyes when someone says it can't be done. i saw that look a little over a year ago when he was told he couldn't possibly succeed in politics. yes, he did. for my father, impossible is just the starting point. >> so, i mean, strong speech, as good as it gets. last three, four conventions got to be one of the top one or two. it came from the heart. he needs 65 million to win. so i know it's extraordinary what he's done, i think people are wondering what can he do to win it all? >> look, i thought that was a spectacular speech. i think one of the best if not the best so far of the

convention. but celebrating the success of winning the nomination is less important than taking that same trait that he was talking about, the ability to do the impossible and putting it in the frame of the general election because, look, let's not -- fine, celebrate for a moment the nomination, but the bigger challenge is winning the general election and describing donald trump's traits in that frame is more important than describing it as the reason that he got here. it's going forward that matters. >> the only thing we're hearing act is casinos failed in atlantic city. we need to hear about the buildings that worked around the world. >> or the policies that will change america. >> he spent so much of the primary pushing and dividing a way to consolidate his base, the trump base, that he's now spinning -- spinning the convention just trying to pull in the rest of the party. that's fine. they've got to do it. but they've got to by thursday night start that job of reaching out to the 65 million votes he's

going to need. that's a much broader coalition. >> do they realize that, john? >> i think they do. can they put it out to motion? >> shot out to donald trump jr. that is the best speech i've ever seen, especially from someone not in politics. here is what i think is really the crucial thing. obviously carl makes a good point about them having to get the policy out there, how he is going to make america great again not just the fact that he is. but those debates are going to be critical. joe and carl will remember very well what happened at the university of massachusetts first presidential debate in 2000 where al gore's body language was so terrible that he probably threw away the election that night. >> sure. >> donald trump has to be different in his debates with hillary clinton than he was with his 16 other competitors during his primary process. they have to hone his performance down to the point he can attack her without looking

condescending or brutish. >> chris christie was charged with prosecuting the case against hillary clinton. it was a good speech if you thought that hillary has done things over the line. if you missed part of that, here is a little bit. >> tonight as a former federal prosecutor i welcome the opportunity to hold hillary rod ham clinton accountable for her performance and her character. hillary clinton as a failure for ruining libya and creating a nest for terrorist activity by isis, answer me now, is she guilty or not guilty? >> awful judge of character of dictator and butcher in the middle east, is she guilty or not guilty? >> as a cod ler of the brutal

castro brothers and betrayal of the fallen state trooper and his family, is she guilty or not guilty? let's face the facts, hillary clinton cared more about protecting her own secrets than she cared about protecting american secrets. we didn't disqualify hillary clinton to be president of the united states. the facts of her life and career disqualify her. >> so carl, he's preaching to the choir as assembled here in -- is that effective in speaking to independents or democrats? >> look, he is not just speaking to the people here. remember, 56% of the american people thought she should have been indicted over the e-mail server, including 30% of

democrats and 59% of independents. he is not just speaking to the crowd here. i thought it was a good speech, particularly when it contrast it with christie in his keynote four years ago when he only talked about himself. it was a little too long. but it should have been on monday night. monday night was about national defense, keeping america secure about the world. i think monday night -- you need to make a turn at some point in the convention towards an optimistic tone. last night paul ryan hit it, but by thursday night the tone has to be we're all in this together. you're reaching out and reaching out to 65 million people, many of whom are independents, soft republicans and they want to know that you have an optimistic view for all americans. >> day three what can we expect, john? >> the theme is make america first again. it will be a lot of what donald trump has been saying on the campaign trail. eric trump will be the family member speaking tonight. i talked with him briefly

outside trump tower yesterday. he said he wrote his entire speech by himself. didn't you consult with anybody else, yeah, i did but i wanted to write it all myself. newt gingrich as well as mike pence and then of course some of the other candidates running, ted cruz. >> donald trump jr. was accused of plagiarism. >> the line he was talking about schools being in bad shape, serving only the clerks and the bureaucrats, people said that looks just like frank buckley's may column in the american conservative. frank buckley said, yeah, but it wasn't stealing because i wrote the speech. >> great. >> great job, guys. thank you. >> thank you. meanwhile, coming up straight ahead, what happens when i have a chance to break in behind the scenes, a special report.

a big deal last week about, well, you know the bushes aren't coming, mitt romney is not coming, john mccain is not coming. you didn't need them because you got the trump family. >> this is the most family convention i've ever seen. when you have melania on the opening night. she hits it out of the park. don jr. was unbelievable. think of the pressure now on eric as he gets ready for tonight because his brother did a great job. ivanka and donald tomorrow. it really is an amazingly family convention. >> you've seen them behind the scenes a lot especially recently, what's your perception of the role they're playing in the campaign over the last 18. >> his core advisory group is melania, ivanka, jared, ivanka's husband and eric and don. and i think that really is the core group. manafort is the core group. they run the companies. they make big decisions together. they're remarkably talented, remarkably smart. says something about his character and tiffany, of

course, is just now starting to join them because she just got out of college. says something about donald's character that they're so smart and so disciplined. i had a chance to read their speeches last week that they wrote. and i mean, then you saw last night, i mean, these are very smart people. >> it says something about -- exactly, how bright and intelligent the kids are for him to go to them for advice. normally that doesn't happen. the kids aren't giving the dad advice. but last night donald trump jr. as you just mentioned spoke. we'll play you a little clip of that. this is a clip when he goes after hillary and we'll get your reaction. >> we'll elect a president who will work with everyone to pass legislation that will make our country great again. a president who will give us a tax code that will free the american economy and end special loopholes for the wealthy. a president who will give us an immigration law that protects american citizens and gives them jobs. a president who will repeal and replace obama care without leaving our most vulnerable

citizens without health care and who will do it without destroying medicare for seniors as hillary clinton has proposed. a president who knows we can't simply delete our problems. but that we have to tackle them head on. >> take me to your leader. >> look, i think the choice is going to be so big by the end of philadelphia. somebody said to me, you know, is the republican party going to leave here unified. i said i was confident that by the end of philadelphia we would be amazingly unified because they're going to be so far to the left, she will be so out of touch with reality that i think it will literally drive every republican. >> i don't know if you picked up a copy of the new york times. they have this thing where they break it down and in their estimation, of course we know whose side they're on. they say hillary clinton has a 76% chance of winning the presidency. >> that's probably why the same guys who said last august that donald trump had no chance to

get the nomination. i keep telling people, these guys -- all of these guys in the media have been wrong. they were wrong all year long. trump came along. now the same people were wrong all year told us their new definition. >> which is? >> that obviously hillary will win. if hillary didn't win, then they wouldn't have any fun. >> newt, let's talk about tonight. one of the key moments i think tonight because you talk about unification is ted cruz. you just told me something about ted cruz's speech no one has seen it? >> i think ted basically said, look, i'm an adult and i'm going do my thing and work with you guys. >> clint eastwood was talking to a chair the last time we had this situation. >> this is a slightly different environment. >> why would you allow an unscripted ted cruz? >> it's a big advantage for donald to have ted cruz on that stang. >> but you don't know what he's going to say. >> no, but i think -- look, cruz is a very smart guy and cruz understands he is very young by presidential standards. he has a very long future ahead

of him. this is part of his re-entry. he is coming back now saying i learned a lot of stuff. i want to be part of the team. i don't think he is coming here to be a bad guy. by the way, i think that was one of john kasich's huge mistakes. he could have showed up the first day, said welcome to ohio. said nothing else and wondered off and it would have been 1,000% better than where he is right now. >> does it make him look like a sore loser? >> not just a sore loser, this is his state. >> right. >> i mean, we are here in his state bringing a lot of economic success and cleveland is being wonderful to us and as governor -- >> we know they're preaching to the choir here and getting republicans together, but what have they done so far, what do they have to do in the donald trump speech to get it beyond the republican party? >> well, first of all, i think around the country arming your own partisans so they know what they're saying is a really big part of kicking off the fall campaign. >> and? >> and i think that rudy, for

example, giuliani was brilliant the other night and the intensity and the power he brought. i think second, in tomorrow night's speech, trump has to both communicate his biography. here is who i am and why i'm running and then he has to communicate a vision. if i become your president, this is what i will try to do for america with your help. it's got to be clear enough and my sense is that it's got to be a pretty substantial speech in terms of a lot of meat he'll put on the bones. >> two nights ago trump showed up to introduce his wife. last night he was on the jumbotron. i bet tonight he is a hologram. is is that a possibility? >> i think he might show up tonight. >> you think so? >> i think he might show up tonight. >> i have no idea. >> let's see. >> i think there's a certain appropriateness, although i thought monday night when he comes walking out of the cloud and calmly saunters on to the stage. >> by the way, the shortest speech in his history.

and good samaritans flip a crashed car over to save a man's life and the incredible rescue all caught on camera. take a look here. >> oh my goodness. that man inside that car all those good people helping to flip it over. he seemed to be pretty okay. he credits his seat belt with keeping him alive after he crashed and flipped his convertible. rescuers say the car was leaking gas so they had to act fast. good work of a bunch of people down there in the south. those are your headlines. head back outside to you with a look at some more politics. >> yeah, you said in the south.

over the top performances by some of the republican parties biggest stars after donald trump wins the gop nomination. >> pollster and partner leigh carter put the speeches to the dial test. first sound bite we'll take a look at, donald trump jr., who by all accounts was the best speaker of the night. watch. >> tell you something about risk, if hillary clinton were elected, she would be the first president who couldn't pass a basic background check. it's incredible. hillary clinton is a risk americans can't afford to take. she says she was issue executive orders to take away america's guns. appoint judges who will abolish the second amendment. just look at how effective those laws have been in inner city chicago. >> so how did that do with independents? >> that particular moment republicans gave it a b plus.

independents gave it a c plus, democrats an f. the most interesting thing throughout his entire speech, he fluctuating with b plus and a plus. everybody said we want this guy on the ticket at some point. he was amazing. he did much more than just speak as a child of a candidate. he seemed himself presidential. >> when you attack hillary clinton she not as popular among democrats as barack obama, it drops through the floor. >> it does. that's something that's not that surprising. independents it wasn't moving them. that's something we have to keep an eye on. last night independents did not move the same way they did on monday. >> let's listen to chris christie speaking last night and get the grade. >> we do not need to settle for less in this election. we cannot reward incompetence and deceit. we need to demand more than what hillary clinton offers for america because we know exactly what four years of hillary clinton will bring. all the failures of the obama years but with less charm and
