so they trained in the whole trade of communications so he will make the case for a conservative party, make the case for unified party, make the case for donald trump and he will make the case for business in america and the economy and what he's done in indiana though we will see him here tonight in prime time. martha: eric trump gets his chance of the microphone, the next sibling to be up there so we will get a chance to watch him tonight, we will see you on the floor and we have "happening now" moments away. jon: the republican party chooses its standardbearer last night, nominating donald trump to take on hillary clinton in what is sure to be a bruising battle for the white house read welcome to "happening now" on this wednesday morning, i jon scott. melissa: i'm melissa francis in for jenna lee. the evening beginning with the traditional rollcall of the state with mister trump easily surpassing the 1237

delegates needed for the nomination. and ending with a star-studded list of speakers including athletes and business leaders, rivals and congressional leaders as well. we also saw two of mister trumps children, tiffany and donald junior all praising the billionaire businessman andmaking the case against lori clinton . >> hillary clinton as a failure for ruining libya and creating a mess for terrorist activity, answer me now, is she guilty or not guilty? >> guilty. >> we need somebody who believes in this country, we need somebody who's proud of this country and will fight for this country. >> i'm i know fighters. ladies and gentlemen, donald trump is a fighter and i know he will fight for this country. >> hillary has changed her positions on so many times it's impossible to tell where
8:02 am
the conviction ends and the ambition begins. not since baghdad has there been a public figure with such a tortured relationship with the truth. >> the next time there's a state of the union address, i don't know whether joe biden or barack obama are going to be but you will find me right there on the rostrum with vice president mike pence and president donald trump. >> i've seen it time and again. that look in his eyes when someone says it can't be done. i saw that look a little over a year ago. when he was told he couldn't possibly succeed in politics. for my father, impossible is just the starting point. jon: succeeded. john roberts live in cleveland with the latest, john? reporter: good morning and as we begin day three of the republican national convention here by lake erie there are signs the party is for more unified that it was a week ago with an
8:03 am
establishment figure beginning to coalesce behind donald trump. certainly there are still elements of the party who even if they hold their nose would not vote for donald trump and there are some establishment figures who while they haven't changed in their opinion of donald trump you say they are going to work to get him elected in november because for them at least, the alternative of having hillary clinton is the president really is untenable but by and large, we are seeing here at this convention is the establishment and other people coalescing behind donald trump. listen to house majority leader kevin mccarthy in his speech last night. >> in these difficult times i remember the words of president ronald reagan. when he described america as that shining city on the hill. together, electing a republican congress, donald trump, mike pence, we can build a better america and make that shining city on the hill bright again. reporter: that is the result
8:04 am
of two speeches given last night by tiffany trump, his 22-year-old daughter with marla maples and donald trump junior. the senses they both gave very good speeches and that a child is a good measure of good parenting and that if donald junior and tiffany trump turned out the way they did, maybe donald trump is doing something right, maybe we don't know everything there is to know about him but a lot will be riding on his tomorrow night because he has to demonstrate, don, that he is not only going to bring this party together but bring the country together if he is elected president and the most important thing of all is he has to show people that he has an idea a cause that is bigger than himself. let's find outtomorrow night . jon: john roberts in cleveland, thank you. the feud between donald trump and ohio governor john kasich
8:05 am
is tent taking center stage right now. our next guest says it's more than sideshow to the republican convention and it could pose a big problem for the trump campaign. let'sbring in byron york , chief political correspondent for the washington examiner and a fox news contributor. this is one of those few that did not get paper over apparently before the campaign, before the convention, byron. >> absolutely not. there is no unity here between donald trump and john kasich, the governor of the host state and it's more than just a little spat because of how important ohio is. it's going to be hard for donald trump to win the white house in any event but the simplest way to do it is he would have to win all the states that mitt romney won in 2012 and on top of that window. oh, pennsylvania and florida. no ohio, no white house so when october comes donald trump is going to need a lot of help from the political structure, the republican political structure in ohio
8:06 am
and right now with his feud with john kasichgoing on it looks like he might not get it . jon: you have written about what you're hearing on the floor about the ongoing battle between these two guys. how do you boil it down? >> if you put it in crude terms i talked to a lot of ohio republicans, many of whom voted for john kasich in this last primary but a lot of them basically said look, we think john kasich is being a jerk but we think donald trump is crazy to be fighting with him so they see fault on both sides but i think others, morepolitical professionals have said it's really up to trump.he's a winner here, he won millions and millions more votes than john kasich did . he has to be sort of gracious and try to kasich somehow in the fold. jon: but trump obviously is in the position he's in because he has been publishes, he has refused to bow to political convention.
8:07 am
he's scrappy and if somebody punches at him, he will punch back so would trump followers , supporters, would they somehow acquiesce if he decides to extend an olive branch to the governor of ohio right now? >> you don't really have to extend much of an olive branch, you can say you know, we wish the governor were here speaking. we're sure he would be well received to talk about all the great things he's done here in the great state of ohio and then just move on. you don't have to bust too much or embrace john kasich but try not to be feuding with this republican who controls the power structure in the state that's absolutely critical to donald trump being elected president. jon: the big story of yesterday really might be the fact that trump kind of waltzed to the nomination.
8:08 am
we were talking a couple of months ago, we were speculating on how there could be this massive floor fight that would have ted cruz waiting on a second ballot or john kasich sometime after that. donald trump made itlook easy yesterday . >> absolutely. you've got to keep an eye on the big picture here. remember we were all talking about 1237, is anybody going to get there? will nobody get to 1237? donald trump blew past that number by about 500 delegates yesterday so he won in a very big fashion so the real headline is that after all the drama and after all the fighting and weeping and gnashing ofteeth, the republican party has nominated trump and he won handily . jon: and hillary clinton seems to be basing her campaign aroundthe idea that donald trump would be a risky president . his son addressed that last night. >> i think that was a really important theme in donald trump junior'sspeech and as john roberts said, it's been well received .
8:09 am
trump junior used the word risk about seven times in the speech and if you listen to democrat they will all say it's just too risky to elect donald trump, too risky to vote for trump. basically trump junior was saying let's talk about risk. the real risk would be to elect hillary clinton and to extend barack obama's disastrous foreign policy or to extend this recession, this recovery that's not really a recovery so trump turned around the idea of risk to point it at the democrats in a way of trying toneutralize what the democrats are saying about donald trump the candidate . jon: byron york, washington examiner. more to come tonight, thanks byron. >> thanks john. melissa: on to the democrats and their deep states guessing game with who clinton could announce as a running mate friday. jennifer griffin is live in new york city with more on this, what can you tell us? >> we're outside hillary
8:10 am
clinton's headquarters in brooklyn, she is back at home in new york. i've been speaking to top democratic sources in the last two days and they all give me the same indication that senator kincaid of virginia is at the top of her list for vice president. i've also received indications from virginia politicians that they are preparing in the event that senator kaine seat in the senate opens up sometime soon, in indication that that just how convinced many of them are that kaine will be on the ticket. hillary clinton herself has left a number of clues about her future running mate. she says he wants someone with national security experience, kaine served both on the armed forces and foreign relations committee. the other name that has
8:11 am
emerged is longtime clinton loyalist tom vilsack, the current secretary of agriculture who brings executive experience as the former governor of iowa, he has a lot of poll among midwesterners and also among farmers but it is kaine who has shot up in recent days and the chatter among top virginia democrats and clinton supporters has intensified . in a recent interview, secretary clinton laid out why kaine would make a good vice president. >> everybody in the us has the potential of kaine. he says he's too boring. >> i love that about him. he's got a great, i mean he's never lost an election. he was a world-class mayor, governor and senator and is one of the most highly respected senators i know. melissa: clinton met last week at her home in washington dc with four other top names on her list, elizabeth warren, julian castro,, perez and governor john looper of nevada an
8:12 am
indication that she was preparing them in the event that they were chosen. we are told the announcement could come as early as friday, melissa in florida, that's where hillary clinton will be companionably later this week. all eyes will be in an event on miami on saturday, that would be where they won't roll out the vice presidential pick. another plus for tim kaine, he speaks fluent spanish from his time as a missionary in honduras and florida being a key swing state if not bk swing state, latinos and the latino vote there is going to be important, back to you p7 no rest for the weary this political season, thank you so much . jon: governor chris christie, a former prosecutor going after hillary clinton , staging, trial with crowd of the gop convention acting as jury as he laid out the case against her. >> as a former federal prosecutor i welcome the
8:13 am
opportunity to hold hillary robin clinton accountable for her performance and character. >> you catch that speech? we will analyze it plus we want to hear from you. who had the best beach at the convention last night? it's the topic of the day on our live chat, go to foxnews.com/happeningnow to join the conversation. >> if you have medicare

[applause] melissa: joining us now is
8:17 am
consultant andrew, a columnist at the washington examiner and republican communications director for the dnc and former spokesman for hillary clinton's 08 campaign, now the executive director of georgetown university's institute of politics and public policy, that's a long title. kristin lets start with you. how did chris christie do? chris christie knows there's nothing that unifies republicans more than taking it out on hillary clinton. and really took it to her last night, he's clearly i think trying to audition for the role of attorney general in a trump administration and this was a speech that was intended to show off that he's a tough kind of guy who can do that. what was a little unfortunate is that christie's was writing this primetime hour of the convention where the
8:18 am
broadest possible audience at home is watchingit and it seemed to be to be more like a message targeted at the folks in the room, the republican activists, getting them fired up and unified where rather than making a case for donald trump to the audience at large at home . >> . melissa: mo, he did prosecute the case and focused on email scandal which did seem to hurt her in the polls at the time, listen to what he had to say.>> finally here at home and one of her first decisions as secretary of state she set up a private email server in her basement in violation of our national security. she said she did not email any classified information. the fbi director says that's untrue. she said all work related emails were sent back to the state department.the fbi director said that's not true. so as to hillary clinton, the charge of putting herself ahead of america, guilty or not guilty? >> guilty.
8:19 am
melissa: ,mo it's played well to the room. does it play outside that room? >> i couldn't agree with kristin moore. the conventions are supposed to be the pivot to the general election, but to where you introduce your candidate to the broader electorate. yes, you throw some red meat out throughout but it's really about making a case for your candidate. that's especially important in this election and i'd say actually for both candidates is when their unfavorable numbers are so high. people don't like donald trump outside of this fall. in fact, a lot of people inside the soul don't like donald trump rid of the primetime speakers, that have been carried so far in the first two nights, the only ones that are makinga forceful case for donald trump are the people who share his last name . paul ryan made a forceful case for the party, not for trump. christie made a forceful case against hillary but not for trump. that's a real problem. melissa: let's talk about
8:20 am
that kristin because donald junior went out last night and talked about the lessons he learned from his father, tried to show that softer side, the people get to know him better. did he succeed with that goal that you mo just mentioned? >> i think donald junior's speech was one of the best we've seen and in part it was because so much of the focus was on making the positive case for his own father. talking about his business background, the lessons he's learned from him, train his father as a competent manager, someone who knows how to get things done, achieve the impossible. that's the message that got people excited about donald trump in the first lease and imposing poll after poll is this issue of the economy and can he get things done? i think donald trump junior's speech was a high point of the convention so far. melissa: i was watching it live but watching social media at the time as well and you saw a lot of out there that were really never trump and conservatives who had been very much criticizing
8:21 am
him along the way saying i've got to hand it to donald junior, he's making the case and doing a great job, he's all the right things. you think that resonates the odd last night? >> it certainly doesn't hurt. yes, i think it is helpful and i think a lot of democrats watched him and watched his sister and watched melania, may have been the best messengers of carrying a wide donald trump message of anybody in this convention but they've got to broaden it beyond just the family. everyone knows the family is going to be for him. they can introduce us to a side of him but everyone else needs to step up and start speaking about donald trump. this seems as kristin said like a convention that is designed to unify a fractured party as opposed to broaden the level of support outside this room. melissa: a couple days left, we will see if that happens. thanks to both of you for joining us.
8:22 am
jon: isis is claiming responsibility for yet another attack in europe, the latest on the investigation and where we stand in the fight against the terrorists. plus investigators on wall street racing for another record-setting day. a live report on the markets which are booming up. >> they brought this on themselves.

that's why you can schedule an installation at a time that works for you. even late at night, or on the weekend, if that's what you need. because you have enough to worry about. i did not see that coming. don't deal with disruptions. get better internet installed on your schedule. comcast business. built for business. jon: new information about recent isis inspired tax in europe. an investigation into the train attack in germany indicates the 17-year-old suspect acted alone. officials say video posted by isis is authentic. the team is seen on the video claiming to be a social for the terror group, making threats before the attack. the suspect from afghanistan was in germany asking for asylum red injured five people with an ax and the night before police fatally shot and killed him.
8:26 am
joining us now, jonathan chandler, vice president for research at the foundation for defense of democracy, a former terrorism analysis at the treasury department. the investigation says he acted alone, you buy that? >> we've been working with the long war journal, our analysts there have been watching this story and we're not convinced that he was acting alone, it was very quickly that the islamic state posted that claim of responsibility on the site. the fact that it happened in such a short period of time to guess they were intentionally prepared for this and the claim for responsibility as well was a very fluent one. this is a guy that didn't really seem to be new at this, that he really had been thinking about these issues and talking about them for quite some time which is another indication he may have hadsome training . jon: just the fact that isis posted the video from him, you don't turn that kind of thing around in the snap of a finger. >> at the very least it would suggest there was one who was
8:27 am
close to him that had close connections to isis and they would have sent it in after the attack took place. jon: the fact he's in germany asking for asylum raises all kinds of questions about the immigration program, not only in europe in this country. >> what you're pointing to is the fact that it is difficult to that these people, that a lot of the refugees coming in right now, they are leaving syria with nothing more than the close on their back so how do you ask for a full background check? how can you get it where these people have been in the past, it's extremely difficult. there's a question of what the right thing is to do which is to alleviate the suffering of hundreds of thousands if not millions of people but on the other hand it's a challenge of trying to protect your own society from things like this which are admittedly small numbers but
8:28 am
still a threat to society . jon: this was a 17-year-old boy. if you're watching him come through the line youwouldn't normally think somebody like that could be a threat. >> that's right and it raises questions about where he studied before, where he traveled. people talk about this idea of radicalization as it it's a passive event . it's often the case that people are studying these things over time and eventually decide to take action. jon: just an hour ago the treasury department announced some financial crackdowns on agents of al qaeda inside iran. do you think that's very telling? >> it is. when i worked at the treasury department 10 years ago they have a consistent track record of pointing out al qaeda's activities inside iran. it flies in the face of this idea that sunnis and shiites can't cooperate . when you have al qaeda operatives working there it does suggest that there mutual enemy in the united states is something they can cooperate on. jon: this as this administration is trying to sell us on the ran nuclear deal.
8:29 am
>> they are clearly aware of the fact that these three high levels of uranian individuals are there and we've known this for a long time, the 9/11 commission report talked about how the al qaeda operatives from that attack traveled through iran so we've known about this for a long time and yet we continue to hear from the administration that iran is potentially moderating or that it's partnered on this nuclear deal, very comfortably. jon: jonathan chandler, foundation for the defense of democracy, thank you. melissa: three police officers in baton rouge murdered on sunday, targeted and assassinated because of their job. what this means for the future of law enforcement area plus, better-than-expected earnings reports sending stocks higher on wall street. could we see another record-breaking day? a live report just ahead. >>
8:33 am
jon: of foxbusiness alert, it is another record-breaking day on wall street, the dow and s&p 500 hitting their highest levels ever. the summer rally continues, this from microsoft and morgan stanley helping to push the markets higher. joining us now, more in seminary. >> record highs for the dow and s&p 500, the nasdaq and tech stocks high levels of the year. the dow inching closer and closer to 19,000. if there is another record finish day, it would be the seventh one in a row, that is the longest such streak in over three years so corporate earnings are driving the
8:34 am
gains on wall street, two thirds of the companies that have reported are posting better-than-expected results, case in point would be microsoft. shares up five percent. microsoft that on the cloud pulling off, trying to position itself as the alternative to amazon in computing power than you have morgan stanley, the latest of the big banks to exceed wall street expectations, cutting costs and trying to boost trading amid the global markets. we are keeping our eye on oil and gas prices today, we just got inventory data from the government. this could be good news for your gas tank because we saw was a price increase in gasoline supply last week and that should send prices down. jon: but lately when oil prices have dropped, the market has been dropping as well. >> they do move in tandem, yes. oil is up today, gastown and oil is up.
8:35 am
jon: i was a little confused right there. lauren simonetti, foxbusiness network. melissa: researchers on high alert after deadly attacks on law enforcement. in baton rouge, a gunman staging an ambush on police less than two weeks after a sniper killed five officers in dallas. many leaders saying the shootings represent disturbing trends. scott erickson is the president of americans in support of law enforcement and he's writing what we experienced right now, no longer eels isolated, it no longer feels extraordinary, sad, it's extreme violence against our men and women in blue. he is beginning to feel routine and that is particularly frightening. scott erickson joined me now. you wrote a really moving piece area what do you mean by those words i just read? >> melissa, thank you for having me. i think you know, we've come to a point now where it almost seems normal, this type of extreme violence against law enforcement is just another routine part of
8:36 am
our day or hour week and that's simply untenable. a civil society cannot function when we normalize that type of violence against the men and women who we demand and ask to provide security for us. and it's just really tragic what's going on. melissa: you wrote no matter your background, your political leaning, your broader ideology every single american must collectively stand up and say enough is enough. what does that mean to people at home here that and read that and they feel that sentiment? what does it mean to stand up and say enough is enough, what would you like to see people do? >> it's important that people realize it's not enough to simply be content with being part of the silent majority, to know in your heart you're on the right side of things, you support law enforcement. you have to vocalize that and verbalize that and that means having enough knowledge to be able to engage your friends who might be critical of law enforcement, might say
8:37 am
something that is born out of misinformation or as we see , a lot of your window and the demagoguery that's out there. standing up and defending law enforcement, doing so in the court of public opinion, it's necessary now that recently say enough is enough and we verbalize that . >> but it does seem like we've gotten to the point where you see somebody stand up and say something like blue lives matter, it's taken as hostile. in some quarters, that can be a racist statement. how do you respond to that? >> i think it's absurd. i think we can acknowledge the legitimacy and nuanced in a term such as black lives matter and weakening knowledge the legitimacy and nuanced in terms of his blue lives matter. each constituency has its own unique perspective on society and the way it sees things that are colored by people's own experiences. let's acknowledge that and respect that but let's do it mutually. >> how do you reconcile and how you verbalize the idea if you are out there and you see
8:38 am
some shootings that have gone on what you see like police shootings are not right. to acknowledge that at the same time at you are saying that law enforcement as a whole needs to be respected, that what's going on against them isn't okay and isn't a way for society to function. how can you verbalize that you believe both those things at the same time? >> one of the phenomenon that i think is particularly disturbing today is society has allowed for the blurring of the distinction between legitimate police brutality and a legitimate use of force, things like anything that's caught on tape or any type of allegation against law enforcement is immediately assumed to be unlawful or criminal or there's some sort of impropriety so what we need to do is step back and both sides, all sides, law enforcement needs to acknowledge that each individual circumstance, each individual situation to be judged based on their own respective merits.
8:39 am
we shouldn't rush to judgment so when we see a controversial shooting or situation i think it's important for leaders to stand up and say look, let's make sure we understand exactly what went on before we rush to judgment area if someone in law enforcement does something wrong they will be held accountable but we can assume the cost charges are brought against an officer or an officer is acquitted that somehow the officer was getting away with something. perhaps the facts and circumstances didn't work those charges or didn't warrant a conviction in that case and we need to be able and willing to knowledge that instead of rushing to the conclusion that there was impropriety that went on their . >> it is a big problem in society right now, obviously causing a lot of problems as you say to say the least. scott erickson, thank you for joining us with your thoughts, thank you. jon: hillary clinton wasting no time this week taking on donald trump ahead of the general election area will it help or hurt her chances in november? >> if donald trump wants to make america great again he

8:44 am
convention cleveland and we heard a lot about me and donald trump. we heard a lot of anger and division. but we did not hear a single solution. that would help working families get ahead. donald trump may claim he's on the side of working people but his actions say otherwise. jon: let's bring in simon rosenberg, president and founder of mdm and also a former bill clinton campaign advisor and with us davidwhen , host of the david weber show and a fox news contributor, welcome . this is more about the times than politics in general but used to be that when one party was having a convention, the other candidate was just sort of lay low and let them have the spotlight. those days seem to be over. >> i think the election is rewriting the rules of our campaign as we know them.
8:45 am
i think it's not news at this point and listen, the most striking thing to me about this convention right now is how many people on the republican side are not there. the bush family, marco rubio, kasich, it's kind of amazing so republicans are sending a huge message of them not being united whereas if you look at hillary next week, she's going to have all her former rivals on her team working together, our team is united, publicans are struggling to put their team together and that's going to be the biggest set of messages surrounding the conventions in the next two weeks. jon: david is that the case and if so are you fearful? >> know i'm not and what we hear from filing simon is what we heard from many on the left. they want to focus on the division. we had a debate within the republican party but we don't hear the debate on issues. the democrats march in lockstep and those that want
8:46 am
to move their party further left than it has been and rather we'd like to focus here and we have. i'm on the floor here, i'm not holding in my observations, i'm living them. i see you, i see debate and the republican party and this convention is about coming out of here unified and moving forward, expanding the base, looking at the general election. a clinton has to attack, she has to paint republicans as someone to run away from because she realizes she will have to debates or 30 or so years offailure because while she's been on the public stage , what has he actually accomplished? we have been ghazi, we have classified issues with her emails, her email server. aside from the fact that even democrats consider that she should have been recommended for indictment by the fbi. she has a lot to answer for so she must deflect from her failure.
8:47 am
jon: she is talking about donald trump attacking him on charlie rose as she did the other day. i want to play this for you now. >> he appeals to the fears and the anxieties and yes, the anger and i was stunned when he was inciting violence at his rallies over the past year so i think it's very clear that he has state his political identity and his future as a presidential candidate on dividing us. that is dangerous. >>. jon: i wonder about the wisdom of that attack, simon. she's pointing out the fact that people are, 7 and a half years after the obama administration arrived people are upset and anxious in this country. >> it's a great question and i think we will talk about this next week as i come on board. i really believe that if you look at the polling data, people are anxious, they're not angry.

there are a lot of anger republicans but the country as a whole, the economy is improving. you are safe today than we were. going to debate this and people can disagree but we had now five years of rising incomes in the united states, the annual deficit is half of what it was when obama came into office and the unemployment rate is under five percent. part of what the democrats are going to be arguing over the next week is look, we have a gradual recovery. we're not where we want to be but things are getting better and electing donald trump with his republican economic strategy that brought two recessions in the last two presidency is more likely to derail progress and were going to make the argument for continuity, republicans will make it for change. were going to win this argument over the next few months . jon: republicans will make the argument that hillary clinton represents a third term of barack obama, right #ácustomá yes she does and by the way, people watching can fact check what simon just did with one, the reality and to the numbers when he talked about the unemployment rate

or rising incomes, he is flat wrong by the numbers even given out by the department of labor and the real numbers when you use the u6 unemployment numbers. however what we see here is an attempt for the republicans or rather the democrats and simon and others to deflect from what is needed to address the issues in this country. there is a righteous anger and failure by washington dc. there's an apprehension and anxiety as people live their realities versus what's been told by the obama administration, by third term of obama with hillary clinton. the question i had is simply this: if you are better off than you were when obama came into the presidency, then why are many of you out of work? why are so many of you out of the workforce? why is growth and make it best and why are we winning this security situation with a global press, why is hillary clinton pandering to black lives matter, and she

would do what president obama has done. he gave the seal of approval to a movement that chance for dead cops and when you think about baton rouge, dallas, baldwin missouri, raffaella ramos and hillary clinton, debbie wasserman schultz and the dnc were willing to do a town hall forum led by black lives in our leaders. ask yourself is that what you want in the white house. jon: i'm getting the rat, you know in radio what that means. we will have you want to talk about these issues again. david webb, simon rosenberg, thank you both go behind the scenes of our convention coverage at the republican national on social media including chat. get the inside scoop before anyone else by downloading the app or go on fox news on it snapchat for a peak behind headlights. had to be fox news app for
