and now you're outside. >> outnumbered and outside. glad to be here. harris: well let's get off to the news, shall we? donald trump officially claiming the nomination last night. it was officially a family affair. flanked by his siblings, announcing to the delegates that their dad needed to clinch the deal. >> it is my honor to be able to throw donald trump over the top in the delegate count tonight with 8 9 delegates and another six for john kasich. congratulations, dad. we love you! harris: love and a lot of emotion in that moment. after that, the other business at hand, one speaker after another, including donald trump, jr., and dr. ben carson making the case for why their can diet and not hillary clinton is right for america. >> hillary clinton is a risk americans can't afford to take. >> she will be appointing people

who will have an effect on us for generations and america may never recover from that. >> hillary clinton understands coal miners and blue-collar workers about as well as she understands secure email. harris: that's not all. the other big moment, governor chris christie, a former federal prosecutor, laid into clinton as if she were on trial. he got a lot of help from the delegates, watch. >> hillary clinton, as a failure for ruining libya, and creating a nest for terrorist activity by isis, answer me now, is she guilty or not guilty? >> guilty! >> awful judge of character and dictator and butcher in the middle east, is she guilty or not guilty? state trooper werner foster and his family, is she guilty or not guilty? >> guilty! >> face the facts, hillary clinton kurd more about protecting her own secrets than she cared about protecting america's secrets. [shouting] harris: with that, brit, the messaging, the narrative here, seemed to be, really, really focused in on winning in november. >> focused in particularly on doing everything they can to diminish hillary clinton who is one of the weaker opponents one can imagine for republican this is year. i think basically this election is republicans to lose. i thought that for a long time. now i think so even more in the sense that hillary clinton is, i think there is so many people who might have voted democratic in the past, who simply don't want to vote for her. what donald trump and his team need to do, apart from ripping her skin off the way you heard last night, they need to convince people that he is a safe vote. that they can trust him.

that he is, for all of the flamboyance and all of the harsh rhetoric and all the rest of it, that, you make him the president, he will be serious and responsible and somebody they will feel safe with. harris: talking about political skin in the game. when you speak of that, chris christie is one of those guys who we know is really tough. you think in moments people were wondering is that what it would have been as vp pick? is this what -- will they still get that as a surrogate from him. >> they won't get it the way you get it from a vp pick but i have got to tell you, harris, the importance of vice-presidential nominees lasts about a week. harris: really? >> the reason, unless, unless the person gets elected, then you don't know what vice president is going to be. harris: you're so important? >> you're missing your train. supposed to be on that train. harris: they honk when you go by. >> yes.

what you usually accomplish with a vice-presidential nominee is uniting your convention, and balancing the ticket, mostly for internal reasons. i mean donald trump has no particular reputation as a conservative. so he names mike pence, a true-blue, certifiable conservative as his running mate in the hope and perhaps the work of bringing conservatives who are dubious about him. sandra: i want to get lisa's take on that there has been a lot of criticism within the party this morning that chris christie, while effectively did target hillary clinton, he was appealing those who were right before him in the audience than those at home who are still facing a very tough decision. >> i think it is important to point out the idea that hillary clinton is guilty is almost near universal thing. 92% of americans think she either broke the law or did something wrong. that is not a sentiment within the republican party. i think out of speakers we've seen so far, most important

third party validatetores are his children. brit brought up with concerns republicans and americans share about his leadership, the character of donald trump. that is a narrative hillary clinton herself is trying to drive. with the third party, with these third party drivers they're driving this narrative donald trump is a leader. anecdotal stories about tiffany trump how he wrote sweet notes on her report card. these things matter. it shapes the opinion of the electorate. harris: meghan, you've been one of the kids on the stage with a candidate. let's watch. then we'll come out. >> my dad is a natural-born encourager. the last person who will ever tell you to lower your sight or give up your dreams. >> for my father, impossible is just the starting point. that is how he approaches business projects, that is how he approaches life. harris: meghan, your impression? meghan: i said yesterday on the show i thought tiffany trump was

one to watch. trending all over twitter. a lot of people talked how she seemed relatable. talked like a normal millenial. donald trump as air of almost royalty. i called it last night, that tiffany trump would be the one that would ultimately go viral. i think she did her job. i think she did a fantastic move. first thing i've liked about donald trump in a long time. donald trump, jr., is setting himself up for political run coming up. he knocked it out of the ballpark. harris: interesting. >> he said he would be open to it today. i think they are absolutely invaluable at this point. chris christie was a bit much for me. honestly i agree with you, sandra, too much playing to the room outside. he is playing to the base. he didn't reach out to any new demographics. didn't move the needle. tiffany even more so than her brother did. harris: that is interesting. i'm hearing today too, this is just about whether donald trump is able to go forward to get to the white house. you can see the groundwork laid for his children, not just in politics but being successful on

their own, kind of in the future last night. tiffany talked at very beginning, i'm nervous. if she hadn't said that i wouldn't have believed it. okay, we'll move on. we heard from house speaker paul rye and why an senate majority leader mitch mcconnell last night. party leaders addressing the crowd after months some are calling rocky relations between the establishment and donald trump. others might have stronger words. on the convention stage they made a pitch for him, but spent much of their time attacking hillary clinton and laying out the party agenda. trump's name only coming up a few times. here it is. >> democracy is a series of choices. we republicans have made our choice. what does the democratic party establishment offer? what is their idea of a clean break? they are offering a third obama term brought to you by another clinton. only with donald trump and mike pence do we have a chance at a better way.

>> so with donald trump in the white house, senate republicans work -- build on work we've done and pass more laws than we've had in year. let's elect a president and vice president who really believe america is exceptional. harris: sandra, it is interesting, you heard so much about unity coming into this convention, even up until monday and tuesday but has that changed? sandra: where is it? for those keeping track, paul ryan said donald trump's twice in that speech last night. isn't this a missed opportunity for the establishment to circle around trump and unify? >> well their mere presence here is symbol of unity one might have thought some months back in the early phase of the primary season would not have been possible to arrange. you have on the first night, you have a rudy giuliani, although been out of office for some time, remains very large figure in american life. very prominent member of the republican party. you have speaker of the house,

majority leader of the senate. they tend, their mere presence tends to obscure the fact that a great many well-known republicans aren't here but it kind of doesn't look that way when you see them up there. harris: we're talking about how it sounds too. if you're counting the name drops, if you will. >> i get that but, donald trump doesn't really need to be praised by these guys particularly. his, the outcome of this convention as far as he is concerned hinges on one thing, basically one thing only. that is his own address on thursday night. it is always the, it is always the signature moment of the convention. and it is one of a handful of opportunity that a candidate will get in the course of an election cycle to reintroduce himself to the public. you don't get very many. he had one right after he sewed up the nomination. he didn't really make much of that. he is in a better position now because of hillary's foibles and problems. now is the chance. this is, that will be the critical moment.

that will be one that everybody remembers most. harris: you know what is interesting, if it plays well for him on thursday night, they're so tight right now, even though she spent 40 million plus dollars in battleground states, that enough of a convention bounce, and those average polls around the nation could put him ahead of her. >> i would be worried if i'm hillary clinton. she spent tens of millions of dollars. we saw them in the hotel room. donald trump needs to look less at republican party, and less about paul ryan or mitch mcconnell. it is about using republican party's utility. donald trump left the primary without campaign infrastructure you need for the general election. they have a built in ground game operation set up. they have a policy and communications team he needs. data, analytics, they have essentially presidential team in waiting he needs to utilize to win the general election. harris: meghan, i want to ask about somebody we haven't seen yet. he has met with certain

delegation but not on the big stage yet. that is ohio governor john kasich. no republican has gotten to the white house without winning that state. meghan: there is a lot of kerfuffle, john kasich not showing up to the convention. it will not hurt donald trump's street cred. this is our guy, he is amazing. never been a better candidate. it is loves disingenuous. few days ago there was disruption within the delegates on the floor with a possible never trump coup what they were trying to do. and paul ryan represents all republicans, which by the way, 50% of the republicans still have a problem with donald trump. so as a person who has been a, yes -- >> important to point out -- harris: lisa wanted to jump in there. >> 538 did al analysis with data going back to 190. donald trump post primary his support of the republican party, his share of the republican

party, on republican base is on par with every other can diet dating back to 1980. we talk a lot about disunity and disruption. we saw it on the floor. no doubt it does exist. you can't say it doesn't given the spectacle gone on, if you look in polling that is not supported in the data. harris: meghan. meghan: i don't know that data. i have been at this convention. been at every convention as i've said since i was born. there are a lot of people here have a lot of mixed emotions. a lot of people at home having a lot of mixed emotions. we're waiting to see thursday how we unite the party. wasn't disruption with fell gates with my father, mitt romney or bush. paul ryan has to come out and be authentic which he was. harris: brit? >> worth noting in 2012, mitt romney got 93% of the republican vote. donald trump doesn't have anywhere near that now. now, over time, most of the doubters will come his way. but, look, 93% is a high mark. he had 93% of the republican

vote. he won independents by five percentage points and lost the election. donald trump face as daunting task. electoral college breaks in such a way hard for any republican nominee to be elected. you have to do extremely well and do well beyond your base. you need the base fully behind you. need to win independents and need to win over some others. he has a chance to win over blue-collar voters many who are democrats. i think, lisa's statistics notwithstanding he has ground to make up with republicans. it will be hard to get to the level mitt romney had. meghan: losing with demographics republicans won, college educated white voters, doing poorly with minority voters. thursday is crucial he comes out as uniter for all republicans. harris: so far every night has been crucial. filled a lot to watch. fox news is the place to be with all day and all evening. our coverage of the republican national convention. 4:00 p.m. eastern, take out the

senator marco rubio. plus trump's son eric, will be speaking. former house speaker newt gingrich who made trump's vp short list will also address the crowd. brit hume, what are you looking most forward to? this is big night for mike pence. his address will be important for couple reasons. his purpose as candidate on this ticket reassure conservative republicans slow to come to trump's side that trump is okay and that the basic principles that the republican party has been for with a couple of exceptions will be what trump is about. and he doesn't have to wow the crowd particularly but he he has to say some things to conservatives, support us, we'll be fine, this guy will be fine. eric trump's speech i think will be obviously more personal and will attempt to further the cause already advanced by his brother. sandra: people love to hear from his family.

>> and by his half-sister, this is also a nice man. because you know, the tone that donald trump struck and during the course of this primary season was much like the personality that showed on "the apprentice." tough guy, willing to kick butt and take names. seen him do it on television. but americans like to like their presidential candidates. yeah, they want a firm guy, like the tough guy. they want to know underneath that is really sweet, decent guy. that is the past mission here as well. harris: tough thing this cycle because neither one of them are very well-liked, hillary clinton or donald trump if you look percentagewise. you mentioned playing to the room earlier, as brit is talking, people critical of him are both in the room and outside of the room. how important is it, who does he play to? meghan: mike pence? harris: all of them in particular. meghan: i'm looking for ted cruz speaking, that he will endorse donald trump a lot of rumors will he endorse donald trump or

setting himself up for 2020. marco rubio said he would be present is phoning in a video. curious to see how short that is, see what happens. you we're unifying tonight. sandra: exactly, how do they end up handling that, lisa, don't forget, "lyin' ted," little marco, these were the rivals for a long time, making case for donald trump? >> i think focus will be more on ted cruz. cruz is looking 1976 what happened with reagan. he wants this to be reagan moment. he did it choosing vice-presidential candidate -- harris: brit is shaking your head. >> he may hope that. >> i don't think it is going to happen. >> i don't think it is going to happen. in fact when the convention in kansas city was brought to a standstill for more than an hour by demonstration for ronald reagan in 1976, when ford, president ford had nomination locked up, it occurred the at moment reagan's name was placed in nomination. cruz did not attempt to have happen here.

but he gets to make the speech it -- those are my people. harris: those are your people. they love you. every time you get ready to make a salient point, they honk for you. we love brit hume. >> they're watching. harris: in the little conductor booth, they're talking we love him. hanging on your every word. >> i was going to say, interesting about cruz, he had same insight about the electorate that trump had. when he arrived in the senate, to use the senate as platform from which to run for president. and he had, he knew that the electorate was disaffected with insiders. well the guy is ultimate insider. princeton, harvard law, supreme court law clerk. member of the bush administration. solicitor general of state of texas. glittering establishment credentials. he set about the task of making himself to be outsider by alienating almost everyone of his republican colleagues. it helped him politically.

harris: welcome back to cleveland, ohio, a city we love to be in for "outnumbered." protests are happening outside of the republican national convention, they have been, they continue. this is after some pretty intense moments where police swarmed cleveland's public square a few blocks away from here. you and i sandra, were going through there. sandra: yeah. harris: steve harrigan is live with more. reporter: harris, small protesters are planning to march and build a wall against donald trump the here in the public square, some first moments of tension we've seen throughout this convention. the crowd grew a little bit larger and louder throughout the day. several times police really had to surge in between groups on the left and right really, to keep them apart from each other. there were some scuffles, but overall just one punch thrown. no arrests made.

it has been remarkable so far, just five arrests overall. demonstrators really wondering allowed, where are the numbers, why are they so small? we've seen remarkable reaction by the police, especially the bicycle police. they're really using bicycles as instruments of crowd control. we've seen them do it very efficiently with a lot of coordination. it is clear that they trained and practices hard for this event. even chief himself, chief calvin williams, we've seen him get into the middle of the crowd, where the loudest protesters trying to diffuse something before it happened. that is really what they have done so far. they were prepared for around the clock arrests. that is not happening here in cleveland. harris, back to you. harris: sandra and i were walking around the square last night. they had complete control. they were doing such a good job. steve harrigan on the job. sandra: people are trying to be so supportive of the police.

one policeman told me, yesterday i've taken more pictures today than i did on my wedding day because people are showing support for them. a good sign. meantime inside of the convention another big night planned as indiana governor mike pence prepares to deliver his vice-presidential acceptance speech. this is the first time pence will have the stage on his own, he was unveiled as donald trump's running mate this past weekend. pence already has a large following among conservatives, that remains relatively unknown to national audience. tonight all eyes will be on him. brit, you said this will be a big moment for him on that stage tonight. what will he need to say to bring people around who may not know that much about him? >> even about him? sandra: yeah. about him and his ticket, along with trump up? >> i think he will need to say things that will establish to people pretty quickly this guy is a movement conservative. i don't think that will be hard to do. sandra: yes. >> he has to vouch for donald trump.

and that is more challenging, because of the skepticism that people have about him. indeed the skepticism pence himself had about trump. he was critical in the past of trump during the early phases of the campaign. sandra: meghan, you had very strong feelings when he announced mike pence as his running mate. meghan: i wanted newt. newt will be on stage tonight. newt is nothing if not, beacon of american conservatism. he is very charming. i also happen to think he is brilliant. mike pence i don't know as well. that being said he could do possibly what eric trump and tiffany trump did. he is spending time with donald trump. tell me about the man. i know the reality show host and i know the person who ran quite combatively during the primaries. i like to know where his moral compass lies. mike pence can do that tonight. sandra: he has a huge task, lisa, for the first time a lot of people will be even seeing or learning about him.

>> hopefully this time he gets a chance to talk to have the stage himself but didn't get a commands in the announcement. what is important, look at theme, make america first again. so many americans are sitting across the country, a majority of the americans feel the country is at wrong track. a majority of americans believe the future left to their children and grandchildren will be worse off than the one they have. look at florida, ohio, pennsylvania. 7 something percent of americans believe the something is broken. they want radical change. that is all things donald trump and mike pence is talking about. what is incouple didn't upon mike pence, make the case collaboratively, you don't like what is happening now, don't like the direction the country is going, but where would you take it? that is important for mike pence to do tonight and donald trump to do tomorrow. harris: i want to come back to brit. there are trains behind us. you sit near the lake which is gorgeous, there is noon hour, the moment i ask you something i know they're going to honk. because that is how you roll. i'm wondering how important it

is for people to see the relationship between these men? is it maybe necessary or interesting for people to see, mike pence say something like this is why we kind of align? we like each other. is that important? >> look, he needs -- this is not easy. he and trump are very different. harris: okay. i thought opposites -- >> i get that. been plenty of opposites on plenty of ticket for a long time. sometimes that is just what it needs to be. the yin and yang. harris: yeah. >> but i don't think -- obviously don't know each other very well. he can't say, donald trump and i have served in this way and that way for many, many years. i can tell you this and that about him. he doesn't know anything about him really, except what he learned last few days to speak off. so it is not an easy task for him to say -- you have got all these people who think like mike pence and admire mike pence and can't imagine what mike pence is doing vouching for this guy. harris: does he need to say why?
