11:00 am
the cash rewards credit card from bank of america. more cash back for the things you buy most. thanks for being with us today. "the real story" starts right now. fox news alert, donald trump is about to hold his first event since being named the republican national nominee. here's a live shot of donald trump's plane sort of on top of the roof of the convention area. we have watched the plane come in circling. he's made quite a couple of quite dramatic appearances in the past couple of days. the first one entering in silhouette to smoke and "we are the champions" by queen. his plane is coming over lake
11:01 am
erie and into the cleveland area with mike pence. the reason for this outing this afternoon is to bring mike pence back for his speech this evening, which is going to be a big night obviously for the vice president. he's been in the hall throughout the course of -- he was there last evening for about an hour. you can see coming into view the trump name emblazoned. that's one of the reasons they've been able to keep the overhead plane down. he's now going behind where the cleveland browns play. coming across lake erie once again. as he's going to land -- there it goes. we didn't think it could get into this airport behind me here, but they seem to have room. as the trump campaign comes landing into cleveland this afternoon and then helicopter over to a friends and family event that we can see just across the way from us here, which is by ground stadium that is closed to the press, but
11:02 am
they're going to be welcoming friends and family, and i would say there's at least a couple hundred people over there gathered at this point. another big night for the trump campaign is about to get under way and it's come to a stop basically behind us. al preview of what we can expect today on day three. we're finally hearing a little bit more detail, john, as we think about the things that have happened the past couple of days. one of the events was this melania speech interview. that sort of clarifies some of that story. what can you clarify about that. >> reporter: good afternoon, martha. i think they turned the music up as donald trump lands the plane. do you remember what happened when melania came out and gave that speech and they said it
11:03 am
looked similar to the speech michelle obama gave at the democratic national convention and the trump campaign basically walked back a little bit saying there might be some similarities and they started kind of denying it. in fact, as early as this morning paul manafort, the chairman, denied anything that was amis. then we get a little press release that someone has actually taken responsibility for what has happened. it's meredith maciver. she's with the trump organization, not the campaign. she was tasked with writing the speech. she had discussed with melania some ideas, some of the people she appreciated. melania referred to her that she really appreciated michelle obama and some of the things that michelle obama had said and they had some phone conversations about it. now picking up a direct quote, over the phone, she, melania,
11:04 am
read me some packages from mrs. obama's speeches examples later wrote them down and included them in the draft that ultimately came from the final speech. i did not check the speeches and it's my mistake. i feel terrible as well as to mrs. obama. no harm was meant. after that became apparent to the trump organization, miss mcissm mciver offered her resignation which donald trump refused to accept. they're hoping to put this to rest. there's no question there are a couple of big nights of this campaign. they didn't want this thing hanging over them, so with this explanation that finally came after 2 1/2 days, they think they might have it under control. martha? >> it seems like an explanation that make sense. there were conspiracy theories
11:05 am
floated that james carville thought somebody had deliberately sabotaged her but it appears that it call as a result of conversations she had with melania over the phone, but speaking of speeches, tonight there are going to be a couple of speeches, big ones. what can we expect tonight, john? >> we've got the acceptance speech. it will probably be a difficult acceptance speech. it will be a broadcam pain for the country, what donald trump would do if he becomes president. there will be attack lines in there because, after all, that's what the vermontal running slot is all about. eric trump will also have a speech tonight. he said that this is one he wrote himself hoping to avoid absolutely any controversy as we see the indiana governor coming out to greet donald trump. he wrote it himself.
11:06 am
he said it's going to be from the heart and much more personal than the speech that his brother don junior gave last night which many female was a speech he hit out of the park. and then there is senator ted cruz of texas's speech. this is really interesting, martha, because he was real vicious at the end, a rival of donald trump, said some really nasty things about him, but we hear over the weeks that follow the two of them have patched things up. the trump campaign as of late this morning had nod seen a draft of ted cruz's speech. obviously they're going to want to get a look at it before he delivers it. i'm trying to find out the latest status. they levitt up to him to come up with. they're anxious to get a look at it if they haven't already by now. martha? >> we're seeing the trump family. there's eric trump who has a big speech. don junior on this left-hand
11:07 am
sight of the screen. vanessa. he's fresh off a well received speech last night. ivanka standing in the forefront. here's mike pence, the vice-presidential candidate. they're waiting for trump who came back from new york. as we were talking about, this is a rare opportunity. the speakers speak on his behalf. tonight it will be a big one as we had said. we'll hear from laura ingraham and mike pence. we're learning more about the intrigue that surrounded the
11:08 am
vice-presidential pick. also marco rubio will be speaking but he'll be doing it remote. he said he had to attend his campaign in florida for the senate and would not be able to make it here to cleveland. a lot of people would like to have had him be here on stage. ted cruz also. as he comes out forwardly in faber of donald trump. if he doesn't, that would be news. ted cruz was the last one running with donald trump. he was the final contender and they had a lot of harsh words over the course of this campaign so far. so we're going to talk about what he might say. take a look at some of this. >> i'll tell you what i think of donald trump. this man is a pathological liar.
11:09 am
he doesn't know the difference between truth and lies. he lies, practically every word that comes out of his mouth and in a pattern that i think is straight out of a psychology textbook. his response is to accuse everyone else of lying. >> that was probably the ugliest. that was may 4 in indiana. that's when ted cruz said he would win indiana. that was the watermark. once he fell, that's when donald trump clinched this nomination in earnest if not this the numbers. good to have you with us. welcome. we're going to watch as this helicopter show goes on behind us. how did you get yourself around to the idea of donald trump. were you on board?
11:10 am
>> i was the first congressman who had endorsed him and had never endorsed anyone else. i never met donald but it was very simple. i said how can someone for the last 30 years be president. the state of living has decreased, heresy in the country. it's time for a person, a business man who's created tens of thousands of jobs, speaks what he's thinking, doesn't particularly care about politically correct. it's a real movement. populous movement. i'd glad to see it. i'm a little bit of a maverick, a new guy since 2011. i'm a term limit guy so it's good to see the american people take back the responsibility of letting washington know that washington works for the people
11:11 am
of this country. it's not the other way around. >> pennsylvania, you're on the ground there obviously. how does it feel to you in terms of donald trump and his ability to possibly win pennsylvania? >> it's an excellent opportunity. rm i chair in pennsylvania. and my colleague. no matter where we are, in my district, across the state, people are talking about trump. it's not only republicans. it's democrats, independents. i've had people say i've never even voted, i'm voting for this man because americans are sick and tired of being sick and tired. you know how i gauge this? by my 84-year-old mother who will be 84 next month. she doesn't get involved in politics, the only time is when somebody insults her son. >> was going to say or when he's running. >> aside from that, he's touched
11:12 am
her heartstrings. she said he's one she feels comfortable with and feels he's going to make this country great again and families and her grandchildren. >> what do you want ted cruz to say tonight? >> who knows. ted can be a little unpredictable. though i didn't agree wit, e i'm a reagan kind of guy. the 11th commandment is thou shalt not talk about republicans. i hope that's behind him. the party has really come together and i think this gives ted cruz an opportunity to show really what kind of standup guy he is and get on board. >> we'll see. nice to have you with us. >> thank you. >> good to have your word. here's what's coming up. the national republican convention rolls on with a former astronaut who will take the stage. this as a speaker from last night expresses the importance
11:13 am
of the battleground states. what about ohio. and ohio goes, so goes america. this is a state, a delegation that punches way above its weight. what we decide to do in the house is not sit there and fight against bad ideas because we realize you can't succeed if you're the opposition party. we had to go out and produce some good ideas.
11:14 am
11:15 am
11:16 am
11:17 am
do you want drama? there's trump's helicopter right overhead. we were watching as he came back from new york. mike pence. his family is over there. he took a nice loop around the cleveland area. boy, you can just imagine what's going through donald trump's mind as he looks back to his original trip in cleveland last summer when he was on stage with 16 other candidates, vanquished them one by one, swore he would win the nomination, and now this has got to be a moment of sweet victory as he looks down over cleveland where he'll take the stage tomorrow night. he's addressed the party. he said this is one of the biggest moments of his life. i imagine it is. it's a dream he's had since 1998. you can hear him thinking about running for president or
11:18 am
political office, wants to make america great again. there's the trump chopper which we've seen carry him from lowe indication to l location to location. he's looping around the cleveland brown stadium, no doubt enjoying the view. it's an absolutely gorgeous day here on lake erie in the mid of the country in a state that's crucial to win. he's not had any help from the governor of ohio. john kasich has taken a back row seat. it's shocking to many that he did not greet this convention, has not been over to the "q" as we call it. john kasich did not lend any support. there's discussion that there were intense talks for him to be a v.p. candidate. he's in the middle of that process, you can say, as we speak. what a beautiful shot we have of
11:19 am
the trump chop per brushes over the trees and just about lands at the nassau glen visitor center. you see it right on lake erie. >> we'll let this play out for a moment here. i'm here with miss collins who flew the shuttle for nasa. what do you think of it? >> it's a beautiful day. all the people out here with their cameras getting into the excitement of the day. >> we've got people lined up and down this whole area watching this. donald trump has his name emblazoned across pretty much
11:20 am
everything that he does and we've seen him flying ougall acs the country. it kind of reminds you of lbj who loved the campaign helicopter where he would swoop into the area. at one point donald trump gave kids rides. there's the spokesperson. she travels with him. she gets off the plane. she's in her 20s and has a huge responsibility. they have a good understanding and he likes the job she does. we've talked about that a lot. trump, his daughter, is going to have a big night when she introduced her father as the nominee. there's tiffany trump on the right. she can breathe a sigh of relief. there's vanessa, don junior's wife. they're parents of five children under the age of 9.
11:21 am
mike pence, man of the hour as well. there's the v.p. pick. there's the team. trump/pence. there's a lot that's been said about the sort of dynastic look or camelot look. this crew. remember, we watched them in scotland as they walked over the heat where they were christening a new trump course. this is a very savvy political team that has been extraordin y extraordinarily successful beyond anybody's expectations and here are the images you'll see. this is the image they want to present. one of strength. donald trump says he wants to make america great again. here he's flown into the state of ohio. he wants to re-create the manufacturing strength that ohio once knew. he said he wants to bring that back to this area.
11:22 am
he hopes to bring in the rust belt states in the midwest. let's listen to donald trump as he -- i don't know if we're going to be able to hear him actually. are we going to be able to hear him? right? come here, mike. we're going to win ohio. we're going win it all. we're going to make america great. that's what we want to do. last time i got accused of speaking a little long. this time i'm going to speak a lot short. i want to introduce a man who's become a friend of mine. somebody whees going to make an unbelievable vice president of the united states. governor mike pence. >> thank you, donald. let's hear it for the next president of the united states, donald trump. it is such an honor to join your family, to welcome you to cleveland. we're excited to hear you address the nation tomorrow night. it's been exciting to hear from your family. more to come tonight.
11:23 am
and i'm convinced what begins in cleveland will end in the white house. thank you and god bless you and welcome to cleveland. >> thank you very much, mike. i just also want to congratulat going to have his shot tonight and my whole family. and karp, your whole family is an incredible family. we love having you with us on this endeavor. hope fully we're going to do an amazing job and an amazing job for the country. kids congratulations. thank you very much. thank you. we'll go and start working. >> so there's the handshake. donald trump who started his comments by saying i'm going to be brief because last time i got criticized for talking too much. remember a lot was about donald
11:24 am
trump. he realized that and wants to pull that back. he let mike pence have a moment to speak and he's thrilled with the job that don junior and his daughter tiffany did last night. he's feeling great. he said the campaign starts now. it's going to be interesting how they pull out. thl is a friends and family event, not open to the public. so there are 200 or 300. it's hard to get a look at the whole crew. you see the secret service hard at work protecting donald trump as he moves through all of these events. what a spectacular ride this has been for donald trump. this is his moment in cleveland. tomorrow night he has a big job ahead of him. it's been an area where he's really let loose.
11:25 am
he said a lot of things that were very controversial at these rallies. this is a huge room he's going to speak to on thursday night. there will be the sort of expectation to get into rally mode. he has to do a presidential speech so people who may be watching who have not seep him in action, although, many people are familiar with donald trump. they're trying to wrap their head around potentially seeing him ads president of the united states. he's got a great opportunity to do that. be're not sure we're going see that. this may be the one appearance that he makes. he made an appearance the other night when he introduced melania. he said he didn't want to wait. he wanted to make appearances throughout the course of this to build the excitement. obviously it's a fantastic opportunity for the campaign. what a day. what a day in cleveland.
11:26 am
you're also going to speak tonight, eileen. so the pressure is on you as you get up and speak about what's near and dear to your program. your thoughts about this. >> i'm actually very excited to see they arrived here at the nasa glen science center, the visitor center. a beautiful day, a beautiful day at the lake. my message is to talk about nasa and the program. this is a perfect backdrop. >> tell us about your own experience. you obviously were breaking through barriers and ceilings in your own work as an astronaut and being on the shuttle. give us a preview of what wi oar going to hear about from you and your career. >> the big topic tonight or the reason i'm here is today is the anniversary of the first moon landing. neil armstrong and buzz aldrin
11:27 am
landed on the moon. we were the first country to land on the moon, but since then, we've had the shuttle program and the space station but today united states cannot launch our own astronauts from our own soil. we pay a company to take our astronauts to the station. we need to get the united states back to launching people from our own country. that's the topic i'm talking about in let's make america first. >> i know in covering shuttle launches, there's this idea that the program is so expensive there's not enough to go around for it. you know, when you break it down by person in this country when you think about the things we get taxed on and pay for, it's really relatively small. >> when you look at it.
11:28 am
nasa's budget is about one half of 1%. but if you look at what nasa is for, we're about investment in the future. like a business that can't stay stagnant, they have to do research and development. by explores space, we governor, innovate. it helps technology. it's a great investment. the reason i'm here is to rate that message because we don't see the launches of the shuttle anymore. it's been five years since we retired the shuttle. >> it's a great point. it's 47 years ago that moment when we saw that first moon
11:29 am
landing. it's just so iconic and so emblazoned in all of our memories. you know, donald trump talks about putting america first. that's what he says he wants to do. that's going to be the subject of it. he said, who can be against america first? i mean why is that a controversial idea. but some would argue the current administration says we don't have to necessarily be the leader in everything. eileen, i want to thank you so much. >> i hope it's unifying. thank you so much for being here today. >> you're going to do great. thanks for being here. the helicopter is overhead. we're going to go to break. donald trump hiring a familiar face. but will it move the needle? we're going to talk about that as we come back. >> these al qaeda terrorists abducted hundreds of young
11:30 am
women. these school girls are still missing. what was obama's response to that?
11:31 am
11:32 am
now you can't spell nutriam i right?t nut, i mean whose to say it's pronounced nu-triton, anyway? my mixes contain delicious nuts, specially blended for your optimal nut-rition. that's right, i just changed a word in the english dictionary, forever. planters. nutrition starts with nut. so we invented a word thatuten, means that.tificial flavors. shmorange. and it rhymes with the color of our bottle. hey, baby, make it your first word! sfx: baby speak not even close. reach for the orange, it's 100% shmorange! if legalzoom has your back.s, over the last 10 years we've helped one million business owners get started.

visit legalzoom today for the legal help you need to start and run your business. legalzoom. legal help is here. man, it's like pure power at your finger tips. like the power to earn allstate reward points, every time i drive. ...want my number? and cash back for driving safe. and the power to automatically find your car... i see you car! and i got the power to know who's coming and when if i break down. ...you must be gerry. hey... in means getting more from your car insurance with the all-powerful drivewise app. it's good to be in, good hands. we're pretty busy out here today, but so farthings are basically calm in cleveland in terms of violence or big arrests or protests during the first couple of days of the
11:34 am
convention. they express their opinions, which is their absolute right to do and so far they have all done that peacefully. steve is live. i took a run there the other night. it's really nice. what's doesn't situation? >> reporter: no arrests yet. the crowd is starting to pick up a little bit. we'll give you a look at what we're seeing. basically we're seeing some speakers being protected by the indiana police. large groups from the left and right. occasionally an attempt at provocation, and when that attempt comes, the police have been very quick to move in and prevent that from happening. police have been up. that has not material.
11:35 am
just five arrests so far and clam so far. most of them not in riot gear holding riot bottles. >> you say those are indiana state police that are there. there's such a great coordination of police department and agencies that we see up and down the streets. >> that has made it more challenging. we'll show you these bicycle police too. keep in mind we're working with about 500 cleveland police and about 2,500 from adam state. keep in mind this is an open carry state. so a lot of times we see people carrying rifles, but with no violence to speak of as of yet. these police officers have been really well coordinated. you can tell they practiced for weeks here. they've been used as a tool to
11:36 am
try to control the crowd. the convention mean as lot to cleveland and you get this sense they want it to go peacefully. so far they're pull pooling it off with lot of effort, marsha. >> steve, thank you very much. as we said, eric trump, the younger trump son will get his turn on the stage tonight. he'll be the fourth family member to make the case for donald trump, the father. eric trump said he personally wrote the entire speech straight from the heart with zero help. here's that. >> i wrote itself myself. >> speech writers didn't help you? >> no, never. i'll deliver it from the heart and the product will be what it will be. >> matt trop served as white house political director under george w. bush. welcome to both of you.
11:37 am
>> great to be here. >> another big opportunity tonight to sell their case to the american people. eric trump is going to do his part tonight. we've interviewed him several times. i don't doubt he'll speak from the heart. he speaks about his father eloquently all the time. >> there's no doubt donald trump's speech was the best speech. they'll speak to the donald trump they know, the donald trump that may not always be con vained to the american public. so if i was donald trump trying example than taking s there's donald junior. >> i don't think you can underestimate that. it would be a completely different story without this generation of trumps involved. >> i don't think it's a fluke. he's got five kids.
11:38 am
the more we hear from them, the more we like. he has this big brand, this big markets empire. when don junior says he's my best friend and mentor, i was with my 13-year-old daughter and she thought that was the sweetest thick to hear. that really helps. >> it does. and i've spoken to both of the sons at different times. talk about the fact that they all vacation together, that i all work together in offices that are side by side at trump tower, and, you know, he's talked about how his dad calls him on saturday morning and wants to talk business with him. so they're a hard-working crew. >> that's right. >> it raises the natural question, because we've all seen the kennedy family, the bush family, and you wonder if there are aspirations for the younger
11:39 am
members of the family. here's a quote on whether or not he would consider running. he said maybe when my kids get out of school. it's the patriotic thing to do. that's exactly what his father said. >> ivanka for young women especially she's an icon. she has a clothing line they look up to. i guess the first question is if there's a dynasty, what dynasty is it in? it's not clear eric and ivanka were conservative. they couldn't vote for their father. >> because it was too late. >> if their father loses, will they be tied to something that people consider toxic? plus, they live in new york city. it's not easy for republicans to be elected statewide and that's another hurdle. could they be a dynasty? perhaps. there are some questions that are still a bit mature.
11:40 am
>> if he loses, you wonder if there's not voter's remorse and a young trump comes around and they say, maybe we should take another look. >> this is great. i think it's great that they want to serve and i think public servants -- i've done it. it's an admirable thing for the next generation wants to do. look. our country is in a precarious position and i think the fact that we've had more people vote in the republican primary, that donald trump has brought out all these new voters, it's a new positive. this is a good thing. if somebody like donald trump june yore or eric trump or ivanka trump can't explain to the partisan why that can be supportive, i'm all for it. i'll cheer them on. >> great to see you. we've talked about this a lot
11:41 am
and it's something h needs to work on when you look at the numbers. we're going to talk to an old friend of his who is working in that effort. she'll talk right after the barack. how they're switching things up. we'll talk about that, too, when we come back. she spent summer binge-watching.
11:42 am
soon, she'll be binge-studying.
11:43 am
now she writes mostly in emoji. soon, she'll type the best essays in the entire 8th grade. today, the only spanish words he knows are burrito and enchilada. soon, he'll take notes en espanol. get back to great with the right gear. from the place with the experts. office depot officemax. gear up for school. gear up for great.
11:44 am
so according to the polls, donald trump has his work cut out for him when it comes to making inroads with the african-american voter. ahead of the general election, take a look. this is the nbc/marist poll that has them at 0%. joining me now is the director
11:45 am
of. welcome back to the program. >> good to be back. >> tell me how the outreach program is going. those numbers couldn't get any worse. how are you working on it? >> we have our work cut out for us. donald trump is going to have to inspire a community that traditionally hasn't been behind the rnc. we wi we are letting them know donald trump's plan is inclusive and we're not just going to take the american vote like the democrats are doing. >> what's the plan? is there a plan to see him in inner cities? talking about the republican alternatives to some of the issues that are really playinging that community in so many areas of the country?
11:46 am
>> you know, we have a traditional grassroots strategy. you're brushing with broad strokes. we're going to go one to one and make a personal appeal and let hem talk about how they can improve the unemployment numbers in the african-american kmun and improven the relationship between the law enforcement and the african-american community. we have to make that appeal a very personal one because i don't know that that message has already connected with the african-american community. >> i guess what i'm getting at is what the format's going to take and what can we see the candidates do. obviously the black lives matter issue and blue lives matter issue that we heard from sheriff
11:47 am
clarke the other night is potent and has turned off a lot of african-american voters. >> absolutely. we're going to reach out. i'm an ordained baptist minister and i believe that the pulpit is still a very strong place to get donald trump's message across. we're teaming up with barbershops and beaut the shops where african-americans gather together to make decisions. so we have the kind of strategies. i've been on the job for three days, so martha, i am ready to go because i believe this is an important voter block for donald trump. >> i know things were tense the other day with the speech issue. i have maintained that's not an issue that most voters are going to care about a lot. it's more an inside baseball issue. how do they feel right now?
11:48 am
>> i have to tell you, i'm from youngstown and it's great to g b in ohio, but i'm interested. number one, they want to know how do we fill our gas tanks or prescriptions. these are the issues um packeting my community. unfortunately in my community i see high levels of unemployment. when donald trump talks about resonating jobs, that resonates. when he talks about keeping those jobs here, that represents youngsto youngstown, ohio. >> no doubt. thank you. omarosa, thank you so much. >> thank you. >> a big moment tonight for the indiana governor. mike pence will be taking the stage tonight hoping to sell the ticket to a broader. how's he going to do tonight?
11:49 am
when we come back. >> governor pence becomes all those criteria. we feel he helps us to accelerate the unification of the party in a real meaningful way. you don't let anything keep you sidelined. that's why you drink ensure. with 9 grams of protein and 26 vitamins and minerals. for the strength and energy to get back to doing... ...what you love. ensure. always be you.

donald trump, and indiana governor mike pence are switching up the traditional pecking order when it comes to the roles of presidential, ask vice presidential candidates at least in this situation.
11:53 am
he says when i get knocked down, i come back twice as hard. we've all heard him say things like that, so is mike pence going to be sort of the kinder, gentler side of this situation? chief washington correspondent, very kind and gentle, most of the time, unless he wants information out of you is joining me in cleveland once more. hi, james. >> martha, good afternoon. these roles are enconstitutional, as you suggest, but the given personalties of the candidates. richard nixon's runs mate, former marilyn governor, his attacks activated radical black activists and became the first prominent black figure to raise the criminal bias against the news media. nixon played a swim rar roimila the ice tower time. jon edwards running with john kerry in 2004 demanded president
11:54 am
george w. bush come back to planet earth and get out of fantasy land unquote. governor pence took a walk through the quickens loan arena this morning the way prize fighters case the ring on the nights of a big bout, pence showed in remarks to the american conservative union in cleveland yesterday that he, too, will take it to the opposition, albeit in his more restrained way. >> the agenda of barack obama and hillary clinton has weakened america's place in the world and stifled our nation's economy, so we must decide, here and now that hillary clinton will never become president. >> i think the charge against hillary clinton will be prosecuted every day by trump u. but i think what mike pence does is follow behind and fill in with some of the details. >> i really have to say, martha, if this is an unconventional ticket, it's just one more
11:55 am
unconventional feature of an unconventional cycle. back to you. >> and you, james rosen, are no negotiati negitism. >> you cannot believe you pulled that out, you snob, you. >> all right. welcome back with this convention planners said to be planning something new this time around, but there's something a little bit strange in the air they never expected here in cleveland. oh, boy, i hope i don't catch this. we'll tell you what it is when we come back.
