donald trump promising to be the law and order candidate as he takes direct aim at hillary clinton in a rousing speech at the convention. ♪ too fono time for losers beca are the champions ♪ >> if you want someone to fight for you and your country, i can assure you, he's the guy. >> there is no black america, there is no white america, there is just america! what happened to it? >> all about family, all about some very dramatic and impassioned speeches as we've been through the entire week. >> and the theme last night for donald trump was really america first. it didn't have a whole lot of things about the republican

party specifically, but that we're all americans and my goal as president to keep america safe. something we've heard throughout his campaign. a conscience effort to reach out to different groups of americas. i i ity diversity front and center. and ivanka supintroducing her father. >> saying he's not a racist, he's hired all walks of life if they're good at their jobs. i thought it was nice to hear from all the kids to get a better sense of who donald trump is behind closed doors. >> specifically ivanka 25uked abo talked about the role women have had in touchdown's companies throughout the years. and she said something along the lines of the number of women that he has in high management positions. so that hopefully, this at the are hoping, will help him with the women vote. also he talked about himself, the lgbt community. >> and that hit home for a lot

of people. he spoke up about that and how we need to protect everybody, including the lgbt community. the longest speech since 1972 i think for any national convention speaker. >> 1972 being the time that they actually started timing them. >> who knows, maybe it's the longest ever. in exact >> exactly. so this is the longest so far out of all of those years. i think second up was bill clinton who went around 66 minutes. >> absolutely. but he stuck with the teleprompter which a lot of people are saying maybe that was a good thing. but think others are saying i kind of like donald trump off the cuff. he wishes that he didn't have to use one. in they were saying that might have been what slowed him down just a little bit. he did take a lot of pauses. of course a lot of applause, as well, as people in the hall seem to think that he did a very good job. so we'll see what people thought at home and our panel. was it enough to win over the

party? our political panel, cathy lynn taylor and morgan ortagus, thank you both for joining us this morning. >> good morning. >> can you believe it is all over and it is official, we now have the trump/pence ticket. cathy, i'll start with you. what did you think about the final evening? >> well, i think over the course of this week there are a lot of people in america who wish they could be adopted into the trump family. and last night he made his case that he would not only be a good father for his children, but a good father for america and i think he accomplished a lot with his speech which was long, but very well delivered. he gave a conservative speech, but more importantly, he gave a political speech. it was backed up with facts. he saved his criticism for the democratic party and for clinton for contrast. and he really laid a case also notably for americans. not just republicans, but for

americans, that he would fight for americans, on behalf of working class people and fight on behalf of those struggling and feeling left out. and i think he broadened his message last night effectively in doing that. >> morgan, what did you make of the delivery? as heather and i were talking about, did he use the teleprompter, it was one of the longest speeches in history of national conventions. other people like him off the cuff. what was your take? >> it wasn't my favorite speech that he's given. it was pretty long. there were some points in the speech that i thought were good. when he talked about israel, when he talked about the iran deal and said it was one of -- it would go done in history as one of the worst negotiated deals. cathy and i have both been in national security positions and i think that resonated for people. but once again for me the kids were the star of the show. ivanka really spoke to me. i thought she was poised, i thought she was intelligent, i

thought she was warm. she gave a message that was open and honest when she said, you knows as a millennial, i don't always vote republican or democrat, i thought how refreshing. she's been honest. she spoke about young women and their struggles to have children and still rise in their careers. her father has been very supportive of her and other women in business. so for me as a millennial woman, she spoke to me p. she was the star of the night. and i just think that they need to bring the kids back more often. they are the star of the show. >> definitely a family theme throughout. and even this evening when you take a look at donald trump's speech or listen to it again, he really presented himself as the overseer of a family, that being the united states of america and bringing different groups together. you mentioned something about the jobs and the economy. and he spoke specifically to laborers and that would tie in with some of the swing states,

specifically the rust belt states that he would need to win. . >> right. when we think about a year ago, nobody thought that donald trump would be polling well it in rust states and yet here he is. and it's because he's speaking with people, to people, i thought it was very powerful when he said when you're at a hillary event, she wants you to chant i'm with her. i want to chant i'm with you. i thought that was very powerful because that's really been the hallmark of his campaign throughout this past year. and i thought eric made a good point when he said two evenings ago my father signs the front of paychecks, referring that hillary and other politicians have only signed the back. so when you think about who will keep you safe so that you can work and who will create those jobs, so far hillary hasn't made that case. trump has been able to make that case. and i thought that the campaign laid out the convention very cleverly this week. and you have to give paul manafort a lot of credit.

there was really a buildup of creating this persona or identifying this persona, i won't say creating because i position it's really there of someone who is a fighter, a hard worker, super committed, super strong. and able to deliver results. and if you believe he's done that in business, maybe you'll believe he'll do that as president. >> the rnc is officially over and now we move on to philadelphia. hillary clinton will take the stage next week. what can we expect to happen next week, morgan? >> well, if we have elizabeth warren and bernie sanders coming forward and giving speeches at the beginning of this week, i think that you'll see the gchlt nc pivot hard left. in fact out of the mainstream of america. you know, in the democratic party at their convention, in their eyes it's almost legal or moral to make a profit. so i think they have these speakers headlining that they have came out so far, that i think we can anticipate that

>> fox 29 has more. >> they're letting people in the agenda who don't have all the facts. some of the cases are still on going. >> reporter: the fraternal order of police furious over what they call a shocking lack of representation. in a scathing e-mail, the fop accuses hillary clinton of insulting the family members of fallen officers by not including them on the list of approved speakers for the dnc. the fop writes in part, quote, it is sad that to win an election mrs. clinton must pander to the interests of people who to not know all the facts while the men and women they seek to destroy are outside protecting the political institutions of this country. mrs. clinton, you should be ashamed of yourself if that is possible. . end quote. it appears the fop has taken issue with the campaign's plans to include among others the mothers of eric garner and michael brown as well as is an take bland, all

african-americans who died during encounters with police. vice president roosevelt poplar says the moms have a right to speak as do the mothers and wives of murdered officers. the clinton campaign responding insisting in a statement to fox 29 as hillary clinton has said, we need to support heroic police officers who put theirn the line every day as well as listen to the voices of mothers who have lost their children. we look forward to highlighting the courageous efforts of law enforcement. the campaign announcing former police commissioner charles ramsey as a planned speaker, a name not on the original list. in we hope >> we hope we sent the message to them to let them know how the police families are feeling. >> so we'll see how that shapes up next week. the time is 17 after the top of the hour and it was an intense week in cleveland as we saw pete hegseth go inside one of the most violent riots at the rnc.

god bless our police officers. >> absolutely. more than a dozen arrests in cleveland of a at the protesters set the american flag on fire outside the republican national convention on wednesday. >> and our own pete hegseth was in the middle of that. and he's back now with a special message for the police officers who kept everyone safe all week. pete, people have not seen it, it's unbelievable what you did and it is what so many who were talking about yesterday even this morning. >> reporter: yeah, a huge response from it. policing has been a major theme of this campaign, major theme of donald trump's speech last night when he said an attack on a police officer is an attack on awful us. i was inside that protest that happened where police acted so professionally and the response from protesters was aggressive as it always is. here is another clip from that engagement and we'll play some response. why do you think we should burn a flag? nothing? silence? >> america was never great!

others have come up to me thanking me and i just look at them and say no, we're the ones thanking you and the reality is they feel like finally a piece has shown what they're doing and how well they're protecting the american public and practitioners here. we got reactions online, as well. matt on twitter said pete, first off, thank you for your service and segtd, icond, i'm so glad y called out all those people. judy saying thank you to all our vets. shame on those who don't respect the sacrifice of human lives made for them and brian tweets great job challenging the flag burners. they had no answers. no one is forcing this them to the stay in the u.s. our police officers to a difficult job every day, they're rarely thanked, always accosted verbally or physically. and they handled that situation beautifully. so our thanks goes back to them every single day for what they do. >> give us a sense for those

that haven't seen it, you've been right in the middle of it, of what exactly the police officers have done to keep everybody safe there. >> reporter: they have been proacti proactive. they've identifying potential vulnerabilities, identifying potential contentious situations and they get in the middle of it. they put themselves, their personal safety, at risk every time to make sure people who are here to be a part of the convention can do so, people who are here to protest because of our robust first amendment. and do so in a way where everyone remains safe and al to do that. and that means they're the ones at that crucial point. i saw it in that protest. they went right into the middle an gained control in a way that none of us would want to do. we are safe because of what they do. so we salute them other and we know the philly police department will have the same challenges next week. >> and the dnc apparently inviting a lot of speakers or several speakers from the anti-police movement and not so much any of the family members

everyone. everyone wants security. and they want national security. and i thought he reached a whole new level of self agadeprecatio and humility. there is no person if they watched that speech from start to finish didn't find something in there that was in there for them. and i was on the floor toward the california delegation and everyone was standing in their chairs holding up their signs, they were so excited about this speech. >> lauren, seemed like there was an attempt to reach out to different demographics, different groups. did you think that was successful? >> well, i think the question is where or not those groups think it was successful and i think there is unfortunately very little chance of that. it was extraordinary and unprecedented that he reached out or called out the lgbt lgbtq

community and called on republicans to be tolerant but he chose a running mate who is viewed as an enemy of the lgbt community. so people will look at his choices and wonder how serious he is. >> so his message was pretty clear, but there are a lot of people that say they were really hoping for his specific thought, they want to hear how he was going to do everything that he promised. did he give enough specifics do you think? >> i thought he did. my goodness, it was a long speech, with a lot of detail. he also has all of these white papers right there on his ite. so people say they want to hear that, but i hear him give specifics and then i never seem to hear him get the credit for giving specifics that again are all right there on his website which by the way is free to enter as opposed to hillary clinton's website which you have to donate to enter. i find that right there one of the most interesting contrasts between the two candidates. >> well that's not exactly true. and look, the problem with -- i

mean, there is of course lots that sound fantastic. immigration reform is something that americans on both sides of the aisle want to see. but even with a republican majority congress, immigration has been impossible to put he forward. so it does become an important question to ask how, how go you plan to accomplish these things. and at every turn, will this candidate has really not answered though questions. you could argue that the convention is not the right place to do that, but it's going to become increasingly difficult for him if he cannot get more specific about how in fact he plans to enact the changes. >> he was very specific. >> and lauren, if about you take a look at hillary clinton, she did have a chance to show how she would to things.about you t a look at hillary clinton, she did have a chance to show how she would to things. what would you say worked during her time as secretary of state? >> look, i think we'll hear a whole other side of this entire story obviously next week and there will be plenty of time to talk in-depth about the

democratic approach to these problems and what are they're planning do for the country. and that will be obviously extremely difficult challenge next week to follow essentially a week of attacks. and i think that the democrats to have a really big challenge on their hands next week and they will try to lay it out to lay out a vision for more inclusive america. to lay out a vision that calls out both the importance of respecting the lives of african americans who feel that they have been disproportionately persecuted as well as law enforcement. >> but they did not ask families of police officers to speak. >> stay tuned. i don't think that there is any question that democrats support law enforcement. i know people think they don't support the police. it's simply not true.president has said over and over depend as has hillary clinton over and over again that police lives are incredibly important and that they support the police. so i realize the narrative is an uneasy one, but it's not necessarily correct or fair.

bipartisan to the tickle. his wife is secretary of education but her dad was one of the first republicans in virginia in recent history or starting just years ago who -- >> she could take over his speech. >> and also a name being thrown around is senator cory booker. what do you think about that? >> yeah being i think that if you look at some of the comparisons between cape canaveral o canaveral, kaine and vilsack, people say that they're both boring. but if theyal, kaine and vilsac people say that they're both boring. but if they fit into the boring track, senator booker would bring the excitement and enthusiasm and the fight also in a way that i guess chris christie would have if he had been selected. maybe it's something in the water, boys from new jersey. but i do think all signs are pointing to that would it be tim kaine. it could be a surprise. the good thing that hillary clinton has going for her is when the end was nearing, she did not have her list of candidates dropping off and saying i don't want to be selected. that happened with donald trump. i don't think that has ever happened before. >> what about this, though? there is the rumor that possibly she will be announcing it today
