12:00 pm
hello, everybody. i'm uma live in new york. it's democrats turn as hillary clinton makes it official with her first campaign appearance with her running mate, senator tim kaine and not wasting any time going after the opposing team. >> i have to say that senator tim kaine is everything donald trump and mike pence are not. >> so what impact will this team have and what can we expect from the newly named gop ticket? you will hear from trump spokeswoman pearson. and speaking of mr. trump, how much did he appeal to those
12:01 pm
endifficult seeded voters and np independents in his nomination speech at the rnc and what about those folks worrying about trump's tone painting a dark picture of america? is that a fair assessment? governor mike huckabee will weigh in. america's world headquarters live from new york starts right now. we have the spotlight turning to the democrats as hillary clinton steps out for the first time in public since announcing she wants virginia senator tim kaine as her running mate. mrs. clinton and senator kaine wasting no time going after their opponents donald trump and governor mike pence on the gop ticket. both speaking to a packed miami rally where at times senator kaine addressing the crowd in spanish. he is fluent in that language and is seen as someone who can help encourage more hispanics to vote. a lot is at stake in the key battleground state of florida where the clinton/kaine team is looking to wage a different effort in tone and style than
12:02 pm
donald trump. fox's jennifer griffin is at the site of the rally in miami. jennifer? >> uma, this is senator tim kaine's coming out party. it's first time we've seen him on stage with hillary clinton since she offered him the job last night. [ speaking spanish ] i'm feeling a lot of things today. most of all, gratitude. i -- i'm grateful to you, hillary, for the trust that you placed in me. >> he was introduced as a spanish-speaking former jesuit missionary from the midwest. he said he planned to be at his church in richmond, virginia, tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. he spoke about his son who is in the marines, his republican father-in-law, the first republican governor of virginia, who integrated the virginia public schools. kaine was a pro bono civil
12:03 pm
rights lawyer and activist. he has won all eight elections he's ever run. and he got emotional when he talked about gun violence. he was governor of virginia during the virginia tech shooting in 2007. >> april 16, 2007, that was the worst day of my life. it was the worst day of so many people's lives. and for the parents and the loved ones of those kids and professors, that pain never goes away. >> my running mate is a man who doesn't just share those values, he lives them. >> we've learned some of the details about how kaine was offered the job last night. we knew that hillary clinton called him at 7:32 p.m. after she spoke in tampa. but now we've learned that her chairman -- campaign chairman
12:04 pm
flew up to rohode island where kaine was at a fund-raiser and they even had a boat on stand by where he was going to be ferried away. he met with him and that's when he began the preparation for this job. so a very, very leakproof process that was run by the clinton campaign in terms of her vice presidential pick. back to you. >> yes, it was kept closely guarded secret until the last minute. the insights you provide ability what was going on behind the scene, fascinating. jennifer, thank you so much. appreciate it. and joining us now with more reaction insides on the inpact of the clinton/kaine ticket, former arkansas governor, mike huckabee and fox news contributor. welcome, sir. great to have you onboard today. >> thank you, uma. a lot of news going on today for sure. >> lots of news indeed. mrs. clinton didn't pick a more daring choice as some would describe it by choosing hispanic or a woman. but instead she chose someone
12:05 pm
who is a roman catholic who speaks fluid spanish. it's hoped by some of the party this could be an aspect of wooing the hispanic voters. does this make any difference since voters usually vote for the top of the ticket instead of the bottom. >> i have to think that some democrats wish that tim kaine was at the top of the ticket and not the vp pick. he still has to run with hillary clinton who is riddled with scandal. we know that she's been caught repeatedly in lies. even the fbi director eviscerated her before the nation saying, oh, but never mind we're not going to actually indict her like the rest of you poor americans out there. look, tim kaine is a good guy. i know tim. we were governors during the same period of time. but in a lot of ways, uma, i think it's problematic for the democrats because they're trying to move as far as they can to the loony left and tim kaine
12:06 pm
doesn't fit that bill. he's not as far left as -- >> she's describing him as progressive when, in fact, he's more of a moderate. isn't that true? >> more so. i mean, in today's democratic party, for sure. because they've moved so far to the left. now, let's be clear. tim kaine is definitely a liberal. and, you know, even though he says he's personally against abortion he's still always governs with a pro-abortion vote. i don't know what that's supposed to mean. i'm personally against this but i'm going to go ahead and do it anyway. let me just say this about tim kaine on a personal level. he's an honorable guy. by that i mean that when i've been around him his faith is real and i remember after katrina tim was part of a group that went down and he was governor of virginia at the time. and he went down there and painted houses with a group from habitat for humanity. it wasn't just a photo-op. he really got on the ladders and he worked all day. and that's when i realized, this
12:07 pm
is a guy who is genuine. there's an authenticity about him. that's good because there's not much authenticity about hillary. so in many ways he is the polar opposite of hillary. he does actually believe what he says. and, you know, he's not somebody who puts away his faith when it's inconvenient for him. >> you know, some are describing this choice in the democratic circles as a boring choice. mrs. clinton is saying, quote, i love boring because he wins elections. he has been that state's governor, he was the mayor of richmond, he has served on city council there, and now senator. he has been someone who has stood up to the gun lobby and today he also talked about immigration saying that it's their goal to provide a pact way to citizenship. >> well, i think that's terrific because now there's a clear contrast. if you think we haven't been open enough with our borders and that we ought to just, you know, tear down by semblance of a
12:08 pm
nation's border, then that's the perfect ticket for you. if, however, you feel that there has to come a time when a country does control its borders, not to keep immigrants out, but to make sure the immigrants we bring are people who want to build america up, not come and burn our flag, wave a flag of a foreign country in our face, or perhaps blow us up or shoot us like some immigrants have been willing to do. if that's what they want to make the choice about, boy, i say republicans have a lot of relief going on across america today because i'm betting on that american people are tired of the unrestricted open borders concept. >> but let me ask you this really quickly. do you think this ticket is going to draw in any of the bernie sanders voters who are really hoping for a more ultraliberal person to be her vp choice? >> no, in fact, i think it's going to push a lot of them away because with senator kaine you still have someone who is
12:09 pm
essentially tied to all the big business interests to the corporate interests just like hull hillary is. subsidiary of wall street. polar opposite of what bernie sanders talked about. and so i don't think it's a help at all. if anything, it's a detriment to get bernie sanders voters. >> let me move on now to the trump campaign and the way many in the mainstream media has been characterizing his acceptance speech during the convention saying he is paining a dark picture of america. also being echoed by the president who says, quote, this vision of violence and chaos everywhere doesn't jive with the experience of most people. what do you say to this? >> couple of observations. first of all, the media's assessment of the republican con slen convention being dark was before it started. it's what they always say about republicans. the second observation is this.
12:10 pm
obama looked utterly ridiculous if not absurd by going out there and talking about how everything is coming up roses, i can't believe donald trump said the world is a dangerous place. within an hour, news was breaking of the munich shooting. just adds to all the other shootings, explosions, and truck ramming through tourists in nice, france. i mean, where is the president? does he ever watch the news? does he ever pick up a paper? does he ever talk to people outside of his well-protected bubble? apparently not. >> today mrs. clinton taking aim at trump's message saying he's wrong, saying america's best days are ahead. so she's putting a very different outlook out there for the country and some of the polls that we have right now, when you take a look, put them up on the screen, show that americans are really concerned about terrorist attacks. and about security. you take a look at july of 2005,
12:11 pm
people being nervous. it was 50%, now 84% are very nervous about our future when it comes to security. >> exactly. and the fact is, donald trump is speaking to the law and order that we need to restore in this country. hillary is not worried about it. she's surrounded by well armed people. she hasn't driven a car in 40 years. hillary has not had a day in her life in almost 40 years where she's not been protected by a multiple number of people carrying heavy arms prepared to lay their lives down for her. . the average american has to go into a shopping mall or theater or stadium or even to go into their own home or drive-thru their neighborhood without having a whole security force. and hullry wants to take away the one layer of security they have, which is their own ability to protect themselves, through owning a firearm and exercising their second amendment rights. this is why i think hillary is so out of touch with reality, i hope she keeps talking like this
12:12 pm
because it's the best thing that could happen for donald trump. >> governor, as always, great to see you. thank you for joining us today with your reaction and insights to the new team on the democratic side. appreciate it. >> thank you, uma. well, as you might imagine donald trump is waste nothing time attacking the clinton/karen ticket. trump is accusing senator karen of being, quote, own eed by the banks and someone who hasn't created jobs. with more reaction from the trump campaign, katrina pierson who is the national spokesperson for the trump campaign. welcome, katrina. great to have you on the show today. >> good afternoon, uma. thank you. >> first off, i want to get your reaction to hillary clinton's voice for vp, senator tim kaine with a number of observers, both democrats and republicans calling this a safe choice at a time when some of the progressive wing of the party hoped that she would choose someone a little more daring but mrs. clih she is calling him a progressive. your reaction.
12:13 pm
>> you know, two things, uma. first we know that this was an absolute slap in the face to bernie sanders supporter who were tired of the status quo, who felt like the system was being rigged. tim kaine promoted the rigged delegate system that stomped out bernie sanders and his supporters. but more importantly, i think this is a very big play to show just how vulnerable hillary clinton is going into november because she did not pick someone who was a progressive. she did not pick someone at even her own dem base support, she picked someone she felt like could appeal to republicans. that's how you know she knows she's vulnerable, particularly in swing states, where donald trump han winning, whereas at this point in time no one thought donald trump would be this close and, in fact, he's beating her in swing states today. and that's what this choice was about. >> some people are saying and suggesting that perhaps this choice more of a safe bet for her because she does not have as much support from white men
12:14 pm
across america and perhaps this would be a way for her to boost some voters on that end of the spectrum for her campaign. what do you think about that? >> well, i think that's true. again, this just goes to show how vulnerable hillary clinton is. she was the woman candidate. she was supposed to be winning by double digits right now and she isn't. this was definitely a play to some of those white men who are said that only support republicans right now but this is really about jobs. and when you look at the both presidential picked side by side you look at tim kaine who unemployment has increased, he has supported nafta. he's a supporter of the trans pacific partnership just like hillary clinton even though she claims she's not supporting it since bernie sanders was in the race. this isn't about the little guy. tim kaine is someone back in 2012 who actually told "the new york times" a he was proud to be career politician. and we're at a time in our country where people are fed up with career politicians. they want change and they want someone to focus.
12:15 pm
now we have a ticket where you have a job creating ticket and a trump/pence and an anti-job ticket with hillary clinton and tim kaine. >> let me get your reaction to the issue of those leaked e-mails from the dnc showing that the party leaked favored the clinton campaign over bernie sanders, openly mocking and criticizing sanders during the primaries. donald trump tweeted out this message saying, leaked e-mails of dnc show plans -- it was out to destroy bernie sanders. mock his heritage, calling it rigged. does your team see this as an opportunity to win over some sanders skup po s supporters wh planning protests next week outside the dnc convention? >> uma, we see this as vindication. mr. trump has been saying this from the beginning that the delegate system was rigged and even more so on the democrat side with the superdelegates because that is a big push on how the establishment stays in
12:16 pm
control and how the global banks and the elites stay in charge. they rig the primary process and going into the general. donald trump is really just saying, look, this is what we've been saying all along. bernie sanders supporters are right. and a lot of those bernie sanders supporters are advocates for level playing field in business. theyant to stop these horrible trade deals because that is what takes jobs. >> are you going try to actively recruit somebody -- >> absolutely. because we have the same goal. and that is putting americans first. and that means bringing back jobs. that means increasing wages. by stopping illegal immigration. and that's what a lot of people want. this is what all those young people were talking about with hillary clinton. hillary clinton was at the forefront of every problem we're facing in this country over the last four decades. whether it's education, immigration, foreign policy, and trade, which has killed jobs in america. we have a choice in november. and that's pro jobs or anti-jobs. >> i have a short time left but i want the ask you as for mr. trump. lots of people were left wondering why on the day after
12:17 pm
his big victory lap accepting the nomination he meets with the news media and takes aim at former rival ted cruz. let's let the audience listen to what he said. >> somebody got boo'd the hell out of placely thousands and thousands of people. honestly he may have ruined his political career. i feel so badly. i feel so badly. and you know he will come and endorse over the next little while. he has no choice. but i don't want his endorsement. what difference does it make? i don't want his endorsement. i have such great -- i don't want his endorsement. ted, stay home. relax. enjoy yourself. >> so why was he still spending time on mr. cruz when he's already captured the nomination? why not just let that go and move on? >> this actually a response. you will know after senator cruz did what he did at the convention and not uphold his word, the next day he took to the texas delegation which was not happy with him, to talk about some of these issues and
12:18 pm
mr. trump simply addressed them the following day because it was a big topic there at the convention and these were delegates that he was talking to. a lot of vol volunteers and delegates that attended the convention and he responded to that. this wasn't an attack to attack senator cruz. it was a response. it was well noting senator cruz did not keep his word, did not support the nominee and took the opportunity at the republican convention to rally show the country that he wasn't a man of his word. >> moving forward, he's going to let that go and keep going forward? >> oh, absolutely. but as you know, uma, donald trump will respond if he is attacked and he will continue to do that as well. >> i got you. katrina, thank you for joining us. really appreciate it. >> great. thanks to be here. just days ahead of the democratic national convention wuk i c wikileaks releasing a number of e-mails sent and received by top democratic officials. we'll tell you what's in them and why they could raise some serious concerns for the democratic ticket at the party's

we have new information with german authorities now saying they do not believe the man who shot and killed nine people at a munich mall had connections to terror groups. the man opening fire yesterday in a crowded shopping center leaving nine people dead and more than two dozen others injured. the 18-year-old gunman was born and raised in munich. german authorities are saying that they're not sure about a motive at this time. that gunman was later found dead near the scene. >> translator: there are no conclusive findings yet. however, we do know that at his apartment material was seized indicating that he was interested in rampages. so far there are no clues linking this crime with international terrorism. >> police add that they now believe only one gunman was involved in the munich attack. officials are promising to tighten security in germany after the country saw two attacks within a week.
12:24 pm
back in this country now, and throughout the primaries, senator bernie sanders often complained that the democratic national committee was favoring hillary clinton and now a new document done by wikileaks appears to back that up. nearly 20,000 released e-mails are suggesting the dnc tried to tip the scales in mrs. clinton's favor. one e-mail reportedly targeting senator sanders' religious believes and mock his heritage. joining us now with more garrett who is standing by live in our washington bureau with more on the details. garrett? >> uma, this new alleged leak does not only show top democratic officials trying to tip the scales in hillary clinton's favor but openly mocking and criticizing sanders throughout the primary contest. just before the primary contest in kentucky and west virginia several e-mails show that dnc staffers were looking for ways to hurt his popularity among democrats. at one point the cfo of the
12:25 pm
democratic national committee appears to suggest attacking his religion. writing, it might make no difference but for kentucky and west virginia can we get someone to ask his belief? does he believe in a god? he had skated on saying he has a jewish heritage. i think i read he is an atheist. this could make defrl points difference with my peeps. my southern baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a jew and an atheist. those efforts continued several weeks later when the press secretary wrote a to colleague, quote, wondering if there's a good bernie narrative for a story which is that bernie never ever had his act together that his campaign was a mess. throughout the primaries the dnc strongly rejected any suggestions that it was playing favorites which for months is exactly what bernie sanders was claiming, that the system was rigged against him. now so far bernie sanders nor his campaign has commented on the e-mails along with the dnc
12:26 pm
and the clinton campaign as well. but this leak does raise a lot of questions about the impartiality of the dnc and it comes just days ahead of their national convention. >> thank you very much for that update. appreciate it. well, after a very busy week the republican national convention in cleveland, donald trump is taking a break from campaign events this weekend. so what can we expect from the gop presidential nominee as the democrats get set for their big moment in the national spotlight in philadelphia next week? plus, as some democrats complain senator tim kaine is not progressive enough, how the trump campaign is trying to attract bernie sanders supporters. >> it's hillary clinton who i think has the bigger problem in terms of making sure that those bernie sanders supporters who are going to turn out in force and be very frustrated at this convention next week, making sure that they're onboard. are they comfortable, do they think that it's worth going out and participating in a system that they believe is fundamentally corrupt.
12:28 pm
12:31 pm
donald trump laying low this weekend after a very busy week in cleveland, accepting the republican nomination as president -- for president. he is taking the weekend off from campaigning. but not from social media. peter is standing by live at trump tower right here in new york city. peter? >> and as the clinton campaign begins to introduce the world to tim kaine, the trump campaign is trying to introduce voters to corrupt kaine. that's what the republican
12:32 pm
nominee is calling the long-time virginia politician, accusing clinton's new running mate of taking bribes on a grander scale that his predecessor in richmond bob mcdonald who was convicted of doing improper favors or a businessman in exchange for gifts. his conviction was eventually overturned but trump still asks, quote, is this the same kaine that took hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts while governor of virginia and didn't get indicted while bob m did? that comes as trump communications director jason miller now sends us this e-mail. quote, it's only fitting that hillary clinton would select an ethically challenged insider like tim kaine who personally benefited from the system. while serving in government kaine has taken tens of thousands of dollars in freebies on free vacations, free clothes, and free tickets. trump today also tweeting a jab at the rumored vp short lister senator elizabeth warren. writing, quote, pocahontas
12:33 pm
wanted vrk p shot so badly but wasn't chosen because she has done nothing in the senate. also, crooked hillary hates her. denying any hard feelings. she has a response and she says, quote, i'm right where i want to be. calling you out and holding you responsible for your reckless vision for america. now, some republican senators has been expressing warm thoughts, saying nice things about senator kaine's election, addition to the clinton ticket. but the senate majority leader mitch mcconnell is with trump on this one. mcconnell put out a statement where we says that the clinton/kaine ticket goes to show a clinton victory would be a third-term of obama. uma? >> peter, fascinating. the war of words that go back and forth over social media, appreciate it. thank you. well, it's a big day for the hillary clinton campaign as she steps out with her new running
12:34 pm
mate senator tim kaine of virginia. this against the backdrop of controversy over the release of thousands of leaked e-mails from the dnc. those e-mails revealing some democratic party officials were siding with the former secretary of state during her primary battle against bernie sanders when the party should have been neutral. among that batch, some scathing notes from democratic chair debbie wasserman schultz. throughout his campaign mr. sanders has been claiming that the system was rigged. let's bring in ed rollins, chief strategist for the great american pack, manager of the reagan/bush campaign and fox news political analyst. >> nice to be with you. thank you. >> before we get to that, let me ask you for your reaction on hillary's choice as a running mate? >> he's a establishment figure. governor, senator, chairman of the party. he's certainly not anything wrong with him. mayhem her a little bit in virginia, ultimate swing state. safest of the swing states for democrats. but it's just the establishment.
12:35 pm
i think the critical thing about this race is donald trump is the antiestablishment candidate. she's the establishment. if you want change he's going to be the candidate of change. he showed great strength in his convention speech. and i think she basically, if you want more of the same, you got the team that will give you more of the same on democrat. want change take a chance on that change, it's him. in cleveland, like the great basketball player lebron james who just won the championship for cleveland. his whole premise is give me the ball, i'll win. trump is give me the ball, i'm not going to give your the details but i'll win. that's what the difference is. >> again, if antiestablishment figure, let's listen to a little bit of what he said at the convention. >> sure. >> i have visited the laid off factory workers and the communities crushed by our horrible and unfair trade deals. these are the forgotten men and women of our country.
12:36 pm
these are people who work hard but no longer have a voice. i am your voice. >> there you have it. i am your voice. stark contrast to what we're seeing from the clinton/kaine ticket. >> powerful message because these people have done all the right things, worked hard, have either lost their jobs or can't afford the lifestyle, can't educate their kids or worried about college loans. they're angry and unhappy with the system and the status quo. he basically has built his campaign around i'm going to be different, i'm going to try and fix these things. obvious lu he's not offered the perfect solutions because i don't think he knows what they are but he will try to fix it. >> today mrs. clinton is saying though that when someone says, you know, i alone can fix it, that's not a democracy. we fought a revolution because we did not make one man make all the decisions. >> well, it's a shared responsibility. obviously part of the problem is
12:37 pm
that high expectations for any president, seldom do they ever live up to it. i think though that he basically will be a change agent and he will go in there and try and shake them up. he's not going to say if you don't give me what i want i'm going to go away. he's going to try and make it happen. offer solutions. i think that's what the country wants today. >> all right. let's talk about the wick i can leaks and the document dump from the dnc. let's talk in terms of the impact this might have on the bernie sanders voters and the fact that many of them are really upset about what's developed and are saying they're going to protest next week at the convention. >> i think that's going to happen anyways. they were the outsiders for four years or eight years. hillary has been the heir apparent. everybody knew that. from the day joe biden was picked and no one knew he was going to move forward she was the heir apparent. >> how damaging is in just ahead of the convention? >> it re-enforces to those very unhappy about the process.
12:38 pm
she won the process fair and square. no question about it. overwhelmingly. at the end of the day these people first time and sometime in the process they're not happy with it. they see the establishment again, been cheated by it. >> adds more fuel to the fire and in terms of what bernie sanders was saying the system was rigged. >> absolutely. the system in a way is slated for those who are there. and i think to a certain extent both sides will argue the same thing. trump has argued the same thing and many instances. but she won it fair and square. they're not going to go away. they're not going to be happy. she's going to win it and it's going to be very hot in philadelphia, on the streets and on the floor. >> is there any chance really of trump bringing some of those folks over to his camp? >> some of them may come over naturally. i wouldn't waste a lot of time going after them. most of them are democrats. most of them are young people. some won't vote. those who are going to vote for trump will do that naturally. what i would be careful of the i was mr. trump is you don't want
12:39 pm
to go so far to the left because that's who they are and obviously if they're for bernie, a socialist and the things he was offering are not things a republican can offer. he needs to make sure his own base turns out and independents basically turn out and that gives him the majority. >> so traditionally there's always a bump after the convention in the polls. >> sure. >> in this case, you're expecting some type of a bump following this convention. are you also expecting a bump in fund-raising since you are very much involved in all of that? >> yes, first of all, a lot of people have come forth now. they now think he can win. so that makes a lot of people more willing to open up their pocket book. usually there's a three or 4% bounce on our side in the same way on the democratic side. they're bunched together this time. back to back. >> right. >> so if he gets a two or three-point bounce this time, she may get it back. the key thing is let's look at this thing two or three weeks after both conventions. that's a good test to where we are. >> to those saying the money is not coming? >> it's starting to come in.
12:40 pm
they have gone up dramatically. she will outspend it 4 or 5-1 no question about that but trump is basically a smaller campaign organization, smaller structure. bigger personality. but at the end of the day you need money. >> if anyone who knees that clearly it's you, veteran of so many unbelievable campaigns. >> thank you. i know how to spend it and i know what needs to be done. a lot of ground structure that needs to be put in play in addition to other things. >> all right. >> thank you. pleasure to be with you. >> appreciate it. the democratic national convention getting under way on monday and all eyes of course on hillary clinton and her new running mate. but has she gotten away from her political roots? moving out of the center and going further left? coming up tonight accout 8:00 p eastern, a special, clinton's left turn, a political insider special anchored by harris faulkner. well, shifting gears in a big way. we are dealing with soaring temperatures across the country.
