12:00 pm
it's noon on the west coast, 3:00 here in philly. where hillary clinton and the democratic party are getting set to start their show, with a lot of drama among the democrats as wikileaks publishes thousands of e-mails that suggests that the dnc was playing favorites during the democratic primaries. live from philadelphia, shepard smith reporting. >> hey, good afternoon from wells fargo center in philly, where the democrats are set to kick off their national convention, and already there are some signs of trouble. debby wasserman schultz will not preside over the convention.
12:01 pm
that's after wikileaks released e-mails. in one message from bag in may, the party's chief financial officer brad marshall seems to ask staffers to, quote, get someone do ask bernie skanander about god. part of it reads, he has skated on saying he has a jewish heritage. i think i read he is an atheist, this could make several points difference with my peeps. my southern baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a jew and an atheist. bernie sanders said today he is not an atheist, here's what the vermont senator told nbc's meet the press this morning. >> this really does not come as
12:02 pm
a shock to me wore mike si haveg time ago that the time is now debby wasserman schultz should step aside, not only for these issues, we need a democratic party that's open and is going to bring young people into it. >> bernie sanders also said that democrats now have to focus on defeating donald trump and electing hillary clinton as president. >> what's the reaction from hillary clinton's camp? >> no real reaction from the clinton campaign so far, the timing is very awkward, coming into the democratic convention here in philadelphia. just yesterday in miami, at the launch rally of the new clinton-kaine ticket, you had debby wasserman schultz being the finder speaker to introduce hillary clinton. and schultz giving hillary
12:03 pm
clinton a big thank you on stage. this whole controversy about the leak, should not take away from clinton's primary victories. >> what we know about the course of our primary system is close to 30 million people, we had independents voting, we had democrats voting, it was a wide open contest. 30 million people voted and hillary clinton won the vast majority of delegates. >> the clinton team would clearly like to shift the focus back to democrats uniting, taking on donald trump, considering they're all here at the democratic convention. >> we woke up this morning in new york to a really surprise endorsement for hillary clinton. >> new york city mayor michael bloomberg says he will endorse hillary clinton and has made the decision that hillary clinton is the person for moderate voters to support in this 2016
12:04 pm
election. it could help with some moderate republicans and some in the middle like bloomberg himself who are struggling with the idea of perhaps voting for donald trump, a senior advisor says bloomberg will vouch for clinton from the perspective of a business leader and an independent. bloomberg has been open about discussing trump's positions on immigration and the economy, and so he will here before a prime time audience make the case for hillary clinton for president. more on the wikileaks follow yaut. clearly rates questions about democratic insiders impartiality during the primaries. >> the publication of alleged exchanges is trickling out. this first one is a response to an april news article published ahead of the june primary. it voiced concern that the democratic nomination process
12:05 pm
had not been fair to him. he pointed to the debate schedule as one example. debby wasserman schultz who said at the time spoken like someone who has no knowledge of the democratic party. if you fast forward to may, remember the back and forth between the dnc and the sanders camp when the nevada democratic party filed a complaint against the campaign, it was after sanders supporters grew angry about rules they perceived to be unfair. remember this video of yelling and chaos that went viral. she wrote in response to sanders campaign manager's tv appearance, she responds, damn liar, particularly scummy that he barely acknowledges the violent and threatening behavior that occurred. fast forward just day later, dnc staffers were discussing whether or not they should respond to a sanderings tv appearance.
12:06 pm
discussing the hypothetical replacement of schultz. >> there's a lot of dirty laundry in these e-mails once you go through them. >> absolutely. e-mails showing dnc staffers saying lawmakers such as senator mccaskell had no back bound, after she defended sanders in that strike in nevada. and they also show that they were critical of pat mcquarrie, and after one exchange, in the clinton cam, director of the dnc was critical of the clinton campaign e-mail, was blast seeking donations ahead of new york's primary. he writes in part, after they got nervous for our strong stand against bernie's violence, brooklyn suddenly grows a back bone, sad. >> here's what the dnc charter
12:07 pm
and by laws state about the chairman being neutral during the election. in the conduct of management of the affairs and procedures of the democratic national -- the chairperson shall exercise impartiality and even handedness between the presidential candidates in campaigns, the chairperson shall be responsible for ensuring that the national officers and the staff of the democratic national committee maintain impartiality. so there's that. zeke miller is here, he's a political reporter for "time." doesn't look like what they did. >> there's some evidence in these er-mails that they did pu their finger on the scales. going through the entire process over the last year, it's been clear that members of the democratic national committee staff, debbie wasserman schultz,
12:08 pm
that they were -- institutionsly, it was the clinton party ready to go ahead. >> you could tell this from the beginning, anybody watching, but to have this evidence, this paper work, how big a problem is this for them? you would think that some of the burn, baby burn people would do just that. >> that's the question in all of this, is donald trump reach out to these very frustrated bernie sanders supporters and the method he adopted seems to go to that the system is rigged. if you're somebody who's inclined to believe that the outcome of the democratic primary process, here is maybe not evidence, but a decent bit of smoke that maybe something was going on, you can look at the debate process, why were there initially five, and why were they only scheduled on weekends and not in prime time. that was always taken as an example of that.
12:09 pm
maybe donald trump acan dive tht narrative, but he also has a lot of republicans who are deciding which will be the more important factor. >> the republican party didn't seem to get it that donald trump was a force, the democratic party scheduled it the way they did so they could have a cheaper and more condensed primary season without pushing her farther to the left. they just didn't have any idea that this socialist from new england is going to be able to do this. then it ran over him. that seems clear. >> in terms of party operating, there's a long history of this, fighting the last battle. you look at the rules change the republican party adopted in 2012, designed to make mitt romney's election a little bit smoother. but the parties are the institutions, and donald trump is not the institutional candidate, hillary clinton very much is and we're watching that play out. and donald trump will exploit that all the way through
12:10 pm
november. the insiders at work, the quote unquote washington establishment, very literally, sort of working behind the scenes to help her, and donald trump doesn't have any of that burden because there's a long list of evidence of republican party officials and those sort of folks, democrats attacking him. nobody thinks that donald trump is part of the establishment, everyone knows hillary clinton is. >> if this is an establishment, and anti-establishment election, it's one thing, but i'm not sure that's what this is. this is a resentment among a section of society that is no longer big and in charge and they have different thoughts. it's not about establishment and anti-establishment, it's about i want the world back the way it used to be, the way i liked it. but the way it was terrible for so many other people. and they can't have it back, donald trump might say we're going to, we're going to, but they're not. so are they going to vote anti-establishment or fear and rhetoric the other way? >> and theer component would be
12:11 pm
how they view the impact of change in this election. hillary clinton essentially calling it the continuation of the obama presidency or a third term. and a measured change in donald trump wants to essentially blow the system up and dramatically alter the way governance is carried out in washington, ta dramatically alter the united states place in the world or do you want clang or more of the same. do you want a lot of change or probably not very much. so the people who want just a little bit of change go? are they able to go to the status quo or do they go and burn the place down. >> this debby wasserman schultz and these e-mails, we have just scratched this. do we feel like that's news all week? >> this is going to keep going on. i'm sure we're going to see from the bernie sanders supporters, some sort of floor protest, some
12:12 pm
sort of effort to register their discontempt with the democratic party establishment. could there be some sort of walkout or booing on the floor, yes, certainly, the way we saw a lot of the anti-donald trump protesters here. particul . >> this floor might be fascinating. >> oh, yeah, for sure. >> i feel like we're too close. thank you. some democrats say hillary clinton should have gone in a different direction with her vice presidential pick. some who want a more liberal one wanted a more liberal one. coming up from philadelphia, on the day before the democratic national convention, it's sunday afternoon, don't you have something you could be doing?
12:14 pm
12:15 pm
squuuuack, let's feed him let's feto the sharks!sharks! yay! and take all of his gold! and take all of his gold! ya! and hide it from the crew! ya...? squuuuack, they're all morons anyway! i never said that. they all smell bad too. no! you all smell wonderful! i smell bad! if you're a parrot, you repeat things. it's what you do. if you want to save fifteen percent or more on car insurance, you switch to geico. it's what you do. squuuuack, it's what you do.
12:16 pm
nobody and nothing can make everyone happy. it's a thing. some democrats say they're not happy with hillary clinton's new running mate, the virginia senator tim kaine, her former rival bernie sanders said he would have liked to see clinton pick somebody else. >> he's a very smart guy, he's a very nice guy, his political views are not my political views, he's more conservative than i am. would i have liked to see someone like an elizabeth warren selected by hillary clinton? yes, i would have. >> but sanders already said even on his worst day, she's 100-times better than donald trump. if you're way left, you want a way left running mate, if you're modera moderate -- >> that's the way it is. still the left is disappointed because they look at this and they say, tim kaine is too middle of the road for us, look at bernie sanders, he won 23
12:17 pm
primary contests, those folks thought they had enough pressure on the clinton campaign that they would get somebody more left on the ticket and they didn't. now they're sorely disappointed. let's talk about tim kaine, he's personally pro-life, he said he would support a partial birth abortion ban, but the left says he's too soft on gun control, on trade, on banking regulations. larry sabado says he's less impressed with the fire brand. >> he's less apt to get on the soapbox and start preaching ideology. that's just not tim kaine. what they do have is a reasonable person who is willing to compromise, willing to listen to others. >> all right, some of these people say they're so upset about this that they're actually researching ways that they can, you know, show their displeasure on the floor out here, turning
12:18 pm
their backs or actually walking out when kaine takes the stage as the official nominee. >> basically all they can do is yack, because it's her decision? >> they are trying to look at some formal options that they may have. two of these groups this morning who are big bernie supporters, not officially affiliated with the campaign are looking into what they may be able to do. they say they went around and polled bernie sanders, and of the bernie delegates, more than 88% said that tim kaine is just not acceptable to them and sop they're just got not going to support them. they don't have confidence that she is going to move forward with key issues that they hear about and get them serious attention. so they're researching ways that they can possibly push back and contest the kaine nomination from being here on the floor. they're trying to find a way
12:19 pm
that they can force hillary clinton to take elizabeth warren on the ticket instead. but senator clinton would have to agree with that. >> this is sunday talking before a thing happens. >> it could get interesting out there. >> if that crowd in cleveland couldn't get all their mess done, this is hopeless. >> could be fun. >> like i said, we're very close, we'll see what happens. donald trump says we should immediately suspend immigration from any country, quote, compromised by terrorism. this morning an interviewer asked him whether that should include countries like france and germany, which have been compromised by terrorism, mr. trump? he responds next. ugh. heartburn.
12:20 pm

12:23 pm
as democrats get ready to kick off their convention here in philadelphia. donald trump is giving now details about one of his more controversial proposals, at first donald trump called for a temporary ban on foreign muslims entering the u.s. then he said it would only include a ban from what he called terrorist states, then on his acceptance speech on thursday, he said we should suspend immigration from any country, quote, compromised by terrorism until we can vet people properly. trump said you can call that an expansion of his original idea. >> we can't be the superpeople.
12:24 pm
>> france, spain? >> here is what i want, extreme vetting. >> what does that mean. >> we're going to have tough standards and if a person can't prove they're from a certain area, and if a person can't prove what they have to be able to prove, they're not coming into this country. >> do we have idea what they have to be able to prove? i mean what's he talking about? >> all he's talking about is extreme vetting, shep and how that's define remains to be seen. trump's very good at setting goals and offering policies -- now at least if you go by what he said today, it won't include some sort of a muslim test. a lot of people will welcome that, but it doesn't explain how countries that have been quote,
12:25 pm
co compromised and he even included that people from territories that -- it's not just france and germany where there's been recent attacks, london has had a whole series of attacks, going back to the double decker bombing three years ago, all over southeast asia, all over africa, all over the world n central asia, you just go down the list, india, all of these countries, pakistan, all of them have had some effect, some impact by international terrorism. so it becomes highly questionable. in addition, the republican party has long worried and there's been some occasional intelligence information that says that some of the people trying to come to this country and attack americans were doing so by crossing the southern border from mexico. then you get into the whole central american immigration situation and what's happening from countries like brazil, which is going to be hosting the olympics in a matter of a couple of weeks. so it seems highly impractical. and what mr. trump did say in
12:26 pm
this interview, which was actually recorded yesterday is that he does understand that by using the word muslim and saying that he wanted to ban all muslims, visitors and immigrants alike on a temporary basis, coming into the u.s., it offended a lot of people, so he took that all out and talked about territories and nation states, which is all encompassing in this world. >> he's going after a couple of his former rivals today too, right? >> yes, he is. and has been for some time. ted cruz really irked him by failing to endorse him at last week's convention. kasich was very visible in his absence last week and also hasn't endorsed. so what trump has said is that he's going to punish them. specifically, he's going to fund a superpac, maybe two, maybe even three to go against those who he says are against the republican unity, watch. >> trump's expanded the map,
12:27 pm
we're no longer looking at one way to win, as romney was con fronted with. the one who's going to have difficulty finding a path to i have there is clinton, because michigan is in play, iowa is in play, connecticut is in play. these are states that democrats have always won. it's the opposite this year. >> that was paul manafort, talking about how the trump campaign believes that there's a lot more real estate, where this republican nominee can compete against democrats, compared to candidates in the republican party in the past. when he mentioned connecticut specifically, that's a state that's been blue on political policy since 1988. and george bush was the one who won there. but the idea that a state could flip to the republican side is a very, very bold statement. and as to the issue about
12:28 pm
punishing the other candidates, what trump has now said is that he would fund a superpac to go over john kasich and ted cruz, and others who he said were too insignificant to name, but he will later. >> too insignificant to name but he will later? >> reporter: name him and fund a superpac with hundreds of millions of dollars in order to punish him. >> okay, carl, the democratic convention getting started in the middle of a heat wave. and it's not just philly, i think this is affecting 200 million people. and it's about 200 million degrees as well. and scientists have said they have a way to predict extreme heat, up to 50 days before it happens. >> this is one of the first studies that has predicted meaningful -- >> how the pacific ocean may help forecast heat wavewaves

12:34 pm
95 in dallas tomorrow. 97 in houston tomorrow, and in philly, 99. that's a heat wave out here, folks coming to the democratic national convention are going to be hot for a lot of reasons. it could actually hit 100 tomorrow. it could feel like 110. we're not the only ones feeling it. more than 100 million americans are under excessive heat advisories. jennifer dean in the weather center, how long is this going to last? >> don't we do this every summertime? it's a heat wave and it happens. so, i mean, september is when it will finally break, i guess.
12:35 pm
but for the foreseeable future, the heat dome that we're into right now, midweek, we'll see the heat continue, we have got the dome of high pressure and that acts like a lid on the heat. so that's going to continue through monday and tuesday, and then we'll start to see it let up a little bit on wednesday, but it's still summertime. we're still going to see some hot temperatures, the heat advisories you mentioned were dangerous for millions of people with the heat indexes well over 100 degrees, you want to stay in your home as much as you can. check on the elderly, check on your pets, but the heat advisories lasting until tusz and wednesday across the plains states. there are your current temperatures, 80s and 90s, but you factor in the humidity with temperatures well over 100 degrees. we have got those forecast highs in the 90s. >> what about give us a philly specific thing, can you?
12:36 pm
>> absolutely. so it's still going to be hot, we think 99 is the high in philadelphia tomorrow. we'll see a few popup showers and thunderstorms for the folks outside, maybe some protesters, might need some bring your umbrella, it's going to be hot, make sure you have lots of liquids with you and make sure you're wearing cool clothing, there's your future radar, but the big take away is the fact that it's going to be close to 100 degrees, 100 in degrees, the rest of the workweek, it's going to be hot, but not as hot, relatively speaking, shep. >> not as hot. looks like 98 on monday, 97 on tuesday, 96 on wednesday, that 's terribeaste' 's terrible. and i blame you. >> well, they all do. >> si wish you could have just seen what happened out here, republican the republican convex out in ohio, steven colbert came out and did his own little thing, and it was really, really funny. he just apparently tried to do
12:37 pm
it here, he went up on the stage, stephen colbert did, now they're doing some makeup to him. a few minutes before this, he went up on the stage and tried to get to that microphone and the secret service was having none of it. not here, kolber, no sir, go back to the old character, we loved that character. he looks like karnac the magnificent doesn't he. this is live. oh, steven, be careful, i believe he's an inebriated. this is funny. i wonder what he's saying. this is infinitely more interesting that what i had planned. firefighters dealing with triple-digit temperatures as they battle a huge wildfire in southern california. the fires killed one person and destroyed at least 18 homes according to fire officials. it's burning near santa clarita just north of los angeles.
12:38 pm
the blaze has scorched nearly 30 square miles. scientists have found a way to predict heat waves nearly two months before they happen. right now they can't do it two days before and you're telling me they can do this two months before? so it seems. the secret has been hiding in the ocean thousands of miles away. and this brand-new discovery could help protect people's lives and livelihoods. every spring farmers here in iowa plant their crops hoping the weather will let their fields flourish. >> it's been a good life. it's hard for our family. >> it hasn't always been that way for paul dericks. he remembers some hot, dry summers in the 1980s when drought prevented his corn from coming in. >> you knew you weren't making money that year. and i was a younger man then and money was a lot harder to come by then. so it was challenging. >> it would certainly be less challenging if he could just get
12:39 pm
advanced warning of those extendinged dry spells. >> if i really thought that we were going to have a drought, i would plant more drought toll ranlt corn that would -- >> after scientists after the national center for atmospheric research reported a new way to predict periods of extreme heat. >> if you're looking at the observations, we found that there was a clear, distinct pattern in the pacific. >> the pacific ocean it turned out offered clues of what was to come, 50 days before heat waves arrived. >> during this period from 50 to 20 days is really the period that we're focusing on. >> the scientists looked back at ocean surface temperatures in the area inside this box, the reds indicated above normal temperatures, the blues indicate below normal temperatures. when they saw a pattern like this, with warmer than average
12:40 pm
water next to colder than average water, researchers found a higher chance of a heat wave in parts of the midwest, northeast and much of the south. >> we kind of view that as a fingerprint of this hot weather that you can actually see before the weather event itself occurs. >> and that could be a lifesaver. >> the potential for fatalities is huge in a heat emergency. so we take it very seriously. >> folks in the chicago area know better than anyone how devastating it can be. >> we are really roasting. >> a heat wave in 1995 killed more than 700 people. police trucks lined up to drop off bodies at the cook county morgue. today -- >> as you can see from the inside, it holds quite a number of folks. >> the county has inflatable cooling tents and generators ready to go at a moment's notice. but emergency managers say having several weeks notice before an extreme hits, they can do a lot of planning. >> it would give us an
12:41 pm
opportunity to prepare and be in a state of readiness and assist our assets and our first responding partners. >> this is the first study that has actually demonstrated meaningful predictions of hot weather more than just a few days. >> nothing is guaranteed. scientists tell us 50 days out, the ocean patterns only give them up to 25% odds for predi predicting heat waves, but by a month out, ill goes up to 50%. and with hot weather, that could make all the difference. >> it's not just hot wear, it's what you're doing on the farm, if you live long enough, they're figuring things out a little better every day. >> scientists don't no why there's a correlation between the atlantic and the heat waves, they're trying to figure out if the ocean temperatures cause the

victory. the democrats are now creating a new unity commission that could lead to changes in the next election. nomi coats is here, she's a bernie sanders supporter. >> i think they have a lot of work to do. >> they have a lot of work to do to get you to vote for her? >> i'm going to vote and i'm going to vote, if i vote, i'll vote for a democrat most likely. >> are you going to write him in? >> i'm going to vote for the democrat, no matter who the democrat is. >> so you'll vote for hillary clinton? >> i am a surrogate, i am somebody who's invested in this kmumt, going out there and working with the community. i can tell that they feel like outsiders, those delegates, those 1,900 delegates on the floor are very upset with the way they have been treated by the clinton campaign.
12:47 pm
and the superdelegate negotiation was a way of putting the debate off to a commission, which is where debates go to die. >> the unity commission. >> the unity commission. >> commissions are so helpful i have found. >> the unity commission is not designed to endorse a candidate two years ago. they are there as an insurance policy. they were put in place at a time when mcgovern cost. the country was more conservative. the elite wanted to have a say against the populous. hillary clinton with pledged delegates and pledged delegates alone, we don't need to give the elites more status. most superdelegates are white men and you have lobbyists who are superdelegates, you have lobbies in places like saudi arabia, that's not very democratic. the bernie sanders support, the delegates and hillary supporters think this is something that
12:48 pm
should just be gone. i was there on the rules committee meeting yesterday, watching them whip the votes, and they were voting lock step. they put the pressure on their delegates, the clinton campaign, to support whatever their agenda was and they with respect giving bernie sanders anything. the realty is the clintons need to go out there and speak to the community, understand what their frustrations are, and speak to them. symbolism isn't going to work and they've got to give him something because we won 46% of the democratic party. >> but it's not enough to satisfy you and you're not happy about it? >> no, i'm not. >> what about bernie sanders? >> he's very establishment, but he is a blue dot at a time when blue dot democrats are gone. we are a party that is 70% more progressive. we have been losing like crazy because we have been depending on this blue dog he is the guy

democratic party from being the 50 state strategy democratic party of the early 2000s to the democratic party that is focused on fundraising that brought in lobbyists, and that is not working because we have lost more seats than ever for this decision. >> tom harris is great, he hilts all the marks. >> he's way left of hillary clinton. >> and if you got him, it would push her left. and then the middle moves and then it's harder to win. isn't that the reasoning behind it? >> i think that's the old -- >> but that's their logic, isn't it? >> that's their old logic, the country is more populist right now, and tom harris could keep that base that the democratic party inspired, the 46% that voted for better thrnie sanders those who are towing the party line of hillary clirp. and tom harris is latino, he understands later, he's part of the administration, he's also in
12:50 pm
favor of tpp but coming at it from a different perspective. that's part of what she needs right now. >> are you all going to raise a ruckus up do something? >> i can't speak for the rest of the delegation, but i think the concern right now. >> are you going to protest in some way? >> i'm going to be a good delegate. i'll follow bernie sanders' lead. but i can't control the rest of the delegates, and none of the minority reports from the platform committee or the rules committee have been moved the forward, so they're not going to be able to debate. and i know these people want to have their voices heard. debbie wasserman schultz is not chairing, so there are going to be no boos. so whatever does happen, my belief is that the democrats want to make whatever happens on the floor bernie sanders' fault and they don't want to take responde responsibility for it. >> wow. maybe it will be an interesting week. >> i'll be here! >> thank you. look forward to speaking with you again. good luck. bernie sanders supporters are already hitting the streets
