1:00 pm
fox news alert. and we begin. the chair of the dnc has announced she will step down at the end of the convention. this news is breaking now. and we're just getting more detail on what exactly she'll be doing here. big news among big unravelings here in philadelphia. just hours ahead of the opening of the signature event for democrats. their national convention to nominate their pick to run for the white house. i'm harris faulkner. you're watching us live inside the sky box at wells fargo center in downtown philly. final preparations underway. hillary clinton and her running mate, tim kaine, plan to present a united front to lead democrats to victory in november. that, for the very reasons why i
1:01 pm
was just telling you, may be a very tall order, as it appears a rift is breaking open inside the democratic party. the chair of the dnc out as the person to preside over the convention, replaced a short time ago. and clinton's main primary rival, bernie sanders, has been champing at the bit for this to happen. we have fox team coverage. elizabeth fran is live for us in washington, d.c. let's begin with mike emanuel, who's on the ground here with me in philadelphia. mike, one big challenge for the new clinton/kaine ticket is going to be dealing with attacks from donald trump. we'll start there. any sense of how they'll first handle that? >> yeah, harris, that's a great point. certainly going to be a huge challenge for secretary clinton and her new running mate, senator tim kaine, as they move forward with this campaign, because we've seen donald trump's unique ability to get under the skin of his rivals. but so far, secretary clinton and senator kaine are saying that essentially what they plan to do is to go after donald trump on issues that he has had. things that he has said about
1:02 pm
different groups in the campaign, so far. clinton says she's going to talk about trump's flaws, hurting people in business, and she says she's going to use what he has said already during the campaign against him. >> he calls you crooked hillary. what do you call him? >> i don't call him anything. and i'm not going to engage in that kind of insult-fest that he seems to thrive on. >> reporter: so we're hearing that they're essentially going to try to stay on message, try to stay the course in terms of taking attacks to him. but as we've seen, trump time and again has found the way to get under the skin of his rivals, so we'll see if they're able to actually continue on offense. harris? >> that's one thing going on today. clinton and kaine really laying relatively low today. is this the calm before the storm? there's a lot happening here, mike. >> harris, there is no question about that. clearly, the democrats are hoping that they will find a way to unify this week.
1:03 pm
and so we've seen senator kaine back home in richmond today. he went to mass at his old church, st. elizabeth's church there in richmond, virginia. many democrats are praising his performance yesterday in the first launch of the event, of the joint democratic ticket. some liberals, particularly bernie sanders supporters, are not at all happy with the selection of tim kaine. they say he's far too moderate. they wanted somebody far more liberal. but at least so far, the democrats say they're going to try to work on it this week and see if they can come out of this convention heading into the general election with a sense of unity. harris? >> it will be interesting to watch, and of course, we'll be watching it all. mike emanuel, thank you very much. but the committee chairperson, debbie wasserman schultz, announcing just a few minutes ago, that she will be stepping down after her party's convention, this after she was removed from her duty of presiding over the convention. boy, it's been an interesting sunday. after leaked dnc e-mails suggest that the party may have tipped the scales in hillary clinton's favor against bernie sanders. yeah, they were picking sides,
1:04 pm
it looks like. elizabeth fran is live for us in washington with the latest on this. elizabeth? >> yeah, harris. let's take a look at a few examples that are surfacing. this first exchange between two staffers. this one penned by dnc communications director, louis miranda. at the time, he was questioning sanders' religion, writing in part, "for kentucky and west virginia, can we get someone to ask his belief. does he believe in a god. he had skated on saying he has jewish heritage. i think i read he is an atheist. this could make several points difference with my peeps. my southern baptist peeps would draw big difference between a jew and an atheist." well, sanders got his chance to respond to this today. >> i am not an atheist, but beyond all of that, it is an outrage and sad that you would people in important positions in the dnc trying to undermine my campaign. the function of the dnc is to
1:05 pm
try to represent all of the candidates to be fair and even minded. but again, we discussed this many, many months ago, on this show. so what is revealed now is not a shock. >> one other new exchange, which took place months ago, when staffers went back and forth on whether or not they should respond to a sanders tv appearance when he discussed the hypothetical replacement of wasserman schultz as chairman, to wasserman schultz responded, "this is a silly story. he isn't going to be president." other stories wasserman schultz questioned if sanders understands how the democratic national process works. stafferses a criticized the campaign for telling reporters ahead of california that the vermont senator wasn't getting treated fairly and pointed to the debate schedule as just one example, even calling sanders' campaign manager a, quote, damn liar. harris, back to you. >> thank you very much. and just quickly before we move on, our chad hergrem is sending
1:06 pm
out e-mails furiously right now, because he knows we're trying to catch up on the news as it's happening. our producer in d.c. he says, quote, this appears to be the face-save maneuver that others may have talked about. according to the statement he's just gotten, debbie wasserman schultz will gavel in and gavel out of the convention. that's an official role, but it looks like a lot of her other official duties may fall to representative fudge of ohio. keep in mind that as all of this is breaking out, and we're going to talk about this with my next guest, this is not what they had in mind to open this particular day, if you will, the day before of the convention here. but let's move on and talk about republicans, and we'll circle back. chad's hard at work on this. by the way, i'm in these headsets, you'll start to hear several bands behind me. i'll let you know that it could get a little loud. and for republicans, presidential nominee donald trump's campaign is gearing up
1:07 pm
for what is expected to be a very busy week. no official events for the campaign today. but this reaction on the newly formed democratic ticket. watch. >> senator kaine is the ultimate status quo. he's never job in the private sector. he's been mayor, governor, senator. he has no idea how to create jobs, nor does hillary clinton. and the two of them together are the ultimate of the establishment in the year of change. >> chief political correspondent, carl cameron is live in front of the trump tower in new york city. so, carl, trump now is expanding his muslim ban proposal. tell us about that. >> reporter: well, he said it's an expansion, or it could be called an expansion. it's fairly complicated, of course. last year, he said that -- and he read a statement that said that donald trump is calling for a temporary complete ban on new muslims coming into the u.s. that was visitors, immigrants, et cetera. that has gone through a couple of evolutions where he's sort of adjusted his language a little
1:08 pm
bit. and on "meet the press" today, in an interview that was actually recorded yesterday, he was more specific than ever that it's now something different. and he acknowledges that he's taken the word "muslim" out, because there was backlash. a lot of people thought that was religious profiling and religious bigotry. now what he's saying is, is that people coming from those territories ay ies and/or natios that have been, quote, compromised by terrorism, will have to face a, quote, extreme vetting. listen to this. >> we can't the -- >> so france, germany? spain? places that have been compromised. >> here is what i want. extreme vetting. tough word. extreme vetting. >> what does that look like? >> tough. we're going to have tough standards. >> give me one. >> if a person can't prove that they're from an area, and if a person can't prove what they have to be able to prove, they're not coming into this country. >> reporter: that's a difficult one to sort of parse and sort out, since so many countries
1:09 pm
around the world have been hit by one form of terrorism or another, including many in europe, many in africa, many in central asia, many in southeast asia. this is a difficult thing for them to sort out, but the word muslim ban is now excised, no longer part of the dialogue. >> that particular phrase. i want to move ahead. we haven't talked about this in a few days, but it was big news as it was happening. that was before the nominee actually spoke. but ted cruz's convention speech. what is the latest on that? >> well, i mean, i'll answer that question, harris. i don't mean to die impress here, but given the apparent resignation of debbie wasserman schultz as not just the chairman of the convention, but potentially the chairman of the admirable national committee, the disunity on the eve of the democratic national convention has now taken it to a new level beyond anything that ted cruz or john kasich or some of the other never-trump dissidents did do. having said that, ted cruz's speech irks donald trump, and the day after his convention, he had a breakfast event with mike
1:10 pm
pence and was very, very critical of cruz, raised the question about whether his father was somehow associated with lee harvey oswald. raised the question of his wife having been a goldman sachs' special interest attorney, et cetera, et cetera. and really kind of stepped on his own message. well, trump in this interview with "meet the press," now says that he's going to exact his pound of flesh and will form a super pac to run against or stop ted cruz from running for re-election in the senate or potentially running for president. he'll also do the same thing to the governor of ohio, john kasich, who also didn't go to the convention last week, although cruz did, but then said what he said. and he even suggested that there was, perhaps, another person who might get a whack. very, very tough stuff. donald trump once again showing, if you're not with him, he's against you and not afraid to come at you. harris? >> well, you framed it beautifully, carl, because the fact of the matter is, he's already the party's nominee. as we look at the disorder
1:11 pm
that's happening within the democratic party, it hasn't even opened yet. and there was a lot of discussion on this sunday about who would actually open that convention. i mean, up until a few minutes ago, it didn't look like the dnc chair would even lift the gavel to do nthat. so it's been a really interesting set of few hours going back and forth. and it certainly seems like people are listening to bernie sanders. i want to give you a quick last word. >> sure. the context of this shouldn't be forgotten. historically, both of these candidates, the about-to-be-nominated hillary clinton and the now-nominated donald trump are the least popular that we've seen in the history of polling. that's decades deep. so when you have two candidates who are that unpopular, that are that distrusted or that disliked, the only way they can win is by pounding the other one down even further. this is a race to the bottom, in which the least -- the candidate who is the least unpopular will
1:12 pm
win. popularity really isn't playing out here in this race. it's the lesser of two choices. >> all right, carl cameron, always good to see you. thank you very much. let's get more on this now. the developments ahead of the dnc convention on this sunday. reverend jesse jackson, he's scheduled to speak at this very event in philadelphia this week. good to have you, reverend, always. >> good to be with you. >> thanks for being with us today. listen, i want you to talk with me, first, about the significance of what's happened on this sunday, and the back and forth, and how you think we got to the point where she is going to gavel in, but she's out after that. >> it's a painful distraction. i found debbie to be a good person who has reached out and bro broadened the base of the party and i regret this has happened. but it will not divide the party. i think the party will focus on hillary and trump alternatives. and i think if this is handled quickly without a lot of conversation, that the moral compass will be revised.
1:13 pm
protection where we loss 5 million lives, and affordable health care and violence and racial disparities. and i think the focus of the campaign will not be lost by this. >> yeah, you know, i want to talk to you a little bit. and actually, just let me pause here for a second, reverend. we're just finding out that donna brazil is actually going to serve as the interim chair. real quickly, how that works out. >> she's qualified. she has integrity, she's smart. she'll have to manage vice president's campaign. she's been a tv commentator, very actively involved in the party. so that she brings a lot of strength and she knows the activists involved around the country. if it's donna, it's a good choice. >> you've run for president before. how is it that your party got to distracted by one woman, that one guy, bernie sanders, who's been shouting at the wind, has
1:14 pm
been shouting about for month. >> you know, he was attacked as being mentally challenged and had to remove -- >> it was tacky. >> he had to remove his running partner -- >> 1972. stuff happens like this sometimes. but there must be a determination to hold on to the rope of what matters. when i look at chicago, when you have 351 killed and 30% unemployment in the city. i will not be sidetracked by any of this to focus on a plan to rebuild. >> you know, in all of the messaging, and i don't want to get too far afield of this, because debbie wasserman schultz has carried the banner throughout all of this. this is her convention. for her not to do anything but gavel in and gavel out is a big deal. but you want to shift now and talk about the death of citizens at the hands of police. you know, why has there not also been -- and i saw one tweet from
1:15 pm
you, but other than that, and you can correct me if i'm wrong, why has there not been a call for deaths of blacks at the hands of other blacks in chicago to be at the level of black lives matter marching in the streets and so on and so forth. and also at the same time, to tell policemen and women that we have their backs. that this is not accomplishing -- >> no one has a right to kill anybody -- >> exactly. >> and what you essentially have is gun and drugs and jobs. that system is a compromise system. and so, you know, black kills whites, blacks kill blacks and whites kill whites. >> what about humans killing humans? >> that's the point of it all. and you have when you have access to military weaponry, stronger than police -- >> well, we do have islamic radical terrorism in this country. and you know some of it is being formed here. some of that military on the streets is a call back to what happened in orlando. but i hear you. >> no, what happened in dallas
1:16 pm
and what happened in baton rouge were soldiers, who apparently had post traumatic syndrome attacks -- >> you don't think that man was racist? >> i think the guy who did the shooting had a military fallback and didn't no enemy from friend and shot police, who should not have happened. but his training was not civil rights training. >> and that's the tweet i saw you made. you said, this is not a civil rights issue. no one wins. >> what strikes me as strange about this is that texas have the most police killed in states with open carry. if you were a police person and i were challenged in some way, i could walk right beside you with my ak-47 and say, how do you do, and they'll shoot you. >> but in cleveland, ohio, where they have the same thing, we just saw peace. you can't paint a broad brush when you talk about open carry, either. >> but it is as specific as sandy hook. it is as specific as the theater
1:17 pm
in colorado. it is specific as munich. these military assault rifles and weaponry is just too dangerous to be in the hands of civilians. >> last question. your nominee has hashtaged bml. are you comfortable with that? >> what do you mean? >> black lives matter. she hashtags that. and you're talking about all the -- >> there is no context. these soldiers did not get their training or inspiration from the civil rights movement. when you look at the killing, the execution of the baton rouge and minnesota and across the country something must be done about this. i and i am hopeful that we would get beyond the need to have weaponry for which there is no defense, in the name of security. >> last word on the convention? your big speech coming up this week? >> well, it won't be so big, but -- >> you're being modest.
1:18 pm
>> well, the focus will be on the issue of -- the issues that matter. the enforceable things. 5 million have been because of these schemes. we've had a net gain of jobs. the issue of less tuition and raising wages for workers. these issues are the issues that hit the broad base of americans. >> those are a lot of senator sanders issues, too. >> there's a lot we share in common. and i think in the talks that he and clinton have had, they share the same issues and same values. >> have a great convention. thank you. >> thank you, harris. >> all right. stay tuned. our continuing coverage of all things dnc, the convention, the knox news political insiders are going to be here. we'll get their take on the wasserman schultz shake up.

all right. we are back at the wells fargo center here in philadelphia, ahead of the opening of the democratic national convention here. reports that the president of turkey is extending his power reach after a failed military coup that left nearly 300 people dead. tens of thousands of demonstrators rallying in istanbul in support of the turkiturk ish president erdogan, who's been cracking down since that night of chaos and bloodshed, recently. the turkish government is detaining more than 13,000 people with suspected ties to the failed uprising and shuttering schools, businesses, and charity organizations, which erdogan says pose a threat to his regime. ambassador john bolton, former u.s. ambassador to the united nations, senior fellow at the american enterprise institute, and a fox news contributor, and often guest on "outnumbered," good to have you, sir.
1:24 pm
good to see you. >> glad to be with you. >> you and i talked weeks ago. i know you were not shocked by how things turned out for erdogan in turkey. but this power grab, why it is catching the people who were tasked with knowing about it off guard? >> i'm not sure they were paying attention. i don't think you could pinpoint the exact moment this coup was going to happen, but it comes as a 100-year-long process of trying to create a secular state is failing under president erdogan. i think this was the last-gasp effo. what erdogan has now done, because people were not paying attention, is to take the excuse to have the failed coup to take down on the opposition and move ever-more towards both authoritarian rule under him and an islamist state, which are his objectives. >> well, when we look at how this is transpired, and the man whose actually here, the state of where we are in pennsylvania,
1:25 pm
of which erdogan as accused of having started from afar, he wants that person extradited. what happens if the united states doesn't do that? >> i don't put too much credence in erdogan's version of this. i'm not saying his people weren't involved in some way. but i think there are much larger historical forces at issue here that played out through the secular military, which is the constitution's guarantor of the secular state. we have laws for citizens and aliens against being involved in foreign affairs. but i would be very skeptical. what i would worry about is that this is one more excuse for erdogan to take turkey further away from the west. you know, the press reports are that his first post-coup meeting with a foreign leader will be vladimir putin. now, a secular turkey has been a linchpin of nato, if erdogan is
1:26 pm
trying to square the circle with putin, i'm very worried about what that implies for turkey and the west. >> interesting. and so this idea that turkey was to be the great democratic experiment in this part of the world, become more secular, less ruled by religion, what does it mean that they're closing schools? this sounds like the taliban. >> well, yeah, look, i think erdogan has never hesitated to state what his ultimate objective is. i mean, i think some believe that he laments the loss of the caliphate when the ottoman empire was broken up and a secular turkey created. and 20 years ago, when he was mayor of istanbul, erdogan said, democracy is like a streetcar. you ride it to the stop you want and then you get off. and i think he's using the failed coup as his stop. >> wow. if you had a crystal ball and, instead, we'll just replace it with all of your years of experience, ambassador, what happens next here? and what's our role in the united states? are we now like an enemy of
1:27 pm
turkey, depending on what they do to their own people? >> well, it's pretty grim, i must say. i think erdogan now has is -- is in the process of clearing field, goethe constitutionally, institutionally, political of opposition within turkey. i don't know what's going to stand in his way of creating that islamist state now. and i think we have been remarkably silent and ineffective in attempting to persuade him otherwise. i wouldn't write turkey off just yet, but it's moving in a very bad direction. >> we need their air base, we need their cooperation in fighting the islamic state savages? >> look, we always imagine a secular turkey as the bridge between europe and the middle east. >> is that gone? >> it's disappearing rapidly. i'm very worried about this. and as i said, using the excuse of not extraditing gulen, could be a lever to come after us. >> ambassador bolton, always good to have you, particularly
1:28 pm
on a sunday as a lot of o things are happening around the world to get your perspective, sir. thank you very much. >> glad to be with you. >> i believe this is paul simon playing behind me and "bridge over troubled waters." you see me with a headset on as they are doing sound checks. it is really moving. we're live inside the wells fargo center awaiting the dnc convention to start. and reaction from the president on the breaking news that dnc chairwoman debbie wasserman schultz will be stepping down at the end of this week's convention. we'll have that for you. remember, senator sanders wanted her to quit. that was one of the things he was demanding from this party. she's going to gavel in, gavel out, and she's out. the political insiders will be here. and we love it when you tune in when you watch us. hit us on our fox news page on twitter and facebook. stay close. hi, i'm dominique wilkins.

live from philadelphia, we are awaiting the opening. in a few hours, tomorrow, anyway, of the dnc convention. and we thought that the news would be breaking at that point, as the party moves forth the democrats to officially, officially announce their nominee for the run for the white house. however, breaking news this sunday, one of the most prominent faces of the democratic party will be virtually absent here in philly, when the convention kicks off tomorrow. dnc chairwoman debbie wasserman schultz will resign her post as party leader after the convention is over. we're told she will gavel in and gavel out, so that's the official thing, open and close. that's it! hillary clinton has issued a statement now, just moments ago. it says, in part, quote, i look forward to campaigning with debbie in florida and helping her in her re-election bid. the change-up is in response to a wikileaks bombshell, reveal democratic leadership tried to help the clinton campaign fend off bernie sanders in the
1:34 pm
primary. sanders called for her resignation earlier today, apparently, he's going to get his way. >> i don't think she is qualified to be a chair as the dnc. not only for these awful e-mails, which revealed the prejudice of the dnc. but also because we need a party that reaches out to working people and young people, and i don't think her leadership style is doing that. >> this story is coming together at this hour. donna brazil, who is the vice chair of the dnc, is now the interim chair as they go forward. they're trying to make the news go away. it would appear with moving it forward, which is often what our leadership will do, across the board. let's bring in the fox news political insiders, john la butteliier, path cadel, doug schoen, a fox news contributor, as well. doug, i'll start with you. this is a mess. this is a political mess going on right now. what's happening in your party?
1:35 pm
>> well, what's happening in the party is the presumed prejudice that bernie sanders alleged has been confirmed from the dnc, from the party leadership, against him. now, i don't think in the long run, it's going to have that much impact, in the same way that ted cruz's kerfuffle with donald trump is going to have much impact. but this is not the story secretary clinton wanted on the eve of the convention. and it also puts into question, will the democratic base, the sanders voters and the clinton voters, come together, or will that fissure fail to heal? >> all right. it is fair, pat, to compare this to ted cruz? i mean, those are two men, donald trump and ted cruz, who didn't like each other. debbie wasserman schultz was the chair of the dnc! >> this is a story of those e-mails, of the dnc leadership and their -- and from top to bottom, ing with involved in
1:36 pm
helping hillary clinton, first of all. some of the revelations, by the way, are pretty not nice, particularly the ones about the press. that the press is not reporting, were certain reporters like at politico had their stories checked and cleared by the dnc. but most of it is about how to screw bernie sanders and help hillary. this is exactly the kind of rigged thing that donald trump tried to appeal to voters with, and whatever. but more importantly, year not done with this. there are going to be more e-mails. and i'll tell you this, the clinton response this morning was astounding, which is to say, oh, the russians hacked into this, and they're doing this in concert with -- >> wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. pat, i have to stop you there. ty thought the whole thing, the whole thing had to do with, your secrets were never exposed, because my e-mail was not hacked. are you now saying they want to have it both ways? >> they're saying about the dnc. i'm simply saying, that's the clinton explanation of the dnc.
1:37 pm
however, you think that the server down in the basement of her home was less secure than this one? remember all their arguments? there's no proof? well, i got news for you, if they hacked this, they were hacking hers. the answer is, we're going to have more e-mails and this is just going to continue to upset the sanders delegates and voters. >> i have to point to john, though. because, john, not only is your chest puffed out, because now the democrats really have a hot mess on their hands going into this dnc, but also because this changes the narrative. this pults it right back in your candidates' camp that says, i've been telling you this all along. >> what really helped and hasn't happened and is not is going to happen, where's the outrage bernie sanders himself? >> well, he's given up. >> he spent his entire
1:38 pm
performance on "meet the press" trashing trump. he was on the hillary team. he wasn't as outraged over this wikileaks stuff as i think he should be. we've gotten away from something that pat and doug and i used to talk about the weak after the iowa caucus, which is that we've never gotten a final total of who really won the iowa caucus, because -- >> oh, wow. >> the chair of the party has hrc as her license plate. she's worked in the hillary campaign in 2008. >> and they don't show because bernie sanders won iowa. the question is, what did hillary know and when did she know it? that's the question that's going to get asked. and he has taken a dive. like in boxing, he has taken the powder. >> why has he done that? why has he done that? he had a whole movement, pat. >> harris, what's his title? senator bernie sanders. and he's angling for a committee chairmanship. he's thinking ahead to -- >> but he might get that, anyway. i mean, they need him to -- >> not a democrat.
1:39 pm
he's not a democrat. >> but they need him to tell his voters, his backers to vote for her. >> he's in the tank. >> he's in the tank, and harris, this is going to work to the advantage of secretary clinton in papering over -- >> i want to go back to something -- >> an example of this the the super delegates. they came out last night with a compromise agreed to by the leadership, the political powers in his campaign, which calls for a commission to come up with super delegates and then must recommend de-seating, if you will. unseating the dnc as totally free delegates and super delegates. i guarantee you that is the biggest fraud in history. it has -- this entire commission has to go before the dnc. the dnc is not going to unseat itself. bernie's movement will be crippled in the future as a movement, because the party
1:40 pm
