"outnumbered" starts now. harris: we begin with a fox news alert. not the way democrats wanted to begin their big week in philadelphia. a scandal broke wide open late yesterday. we got word dnc chair, debbie wasserman schultz lost her job and will exit stage left at the end of the convention. this is "outnumbered." i'm harris faulkner. with me today, here in philly at the democratic national convention, sandra smith, host of "kennedy" on fox business, kennedy herself, democratic strategist, julie roginsky. today's #oneluckyguy. no rest for our friend, coanchor

of "america's newsroom," bill hemmer. he says he is outnumbered. can we do this? all right. >> so much for boring conventions, huh? harris: i know. >> so much for scripted programs that go exactly like they spell it out day by day. far from it. two weeks in a row. harris: i don't think scandal was on top of the list of the program. on our badges, debbie wasserman schultz, all your ideas you need to get into the venue, her name is on them. >> that's right. harris: interesting. start with a stunning development now as democrats gather here in philly, dnc chair debbie wasserman schultz announced she will step down amid fallout over leaked emails showing dnc officials looking at ways to hurt bernie sanders during the primaries including a plan to publicly question his religious beliefs. even her home state delegation had a negative reaction, watch. >> i also had the privilege of speaking to hillary clinton. she thanked me for my service.

we had a wonderful conversation. [shouting] she asked me i committed to her i would serve as surrogate throughout this campaign so we can make sure that she is able to help build on the progress that we've been able to make. harris: that was just this morning. hillary clinton was asked about it on "60 minutes." >> i didn't know anything about it and i haven't read any of those but i am adamantly opposed to anyone bringing religion into our political process. i mean the constitution says no religious test. so that is just absolutely wrong and unacceptable. harris: and this. clinton's campaign chair pinning the blame for the leaked emails on the russians. >> what's disturbing to us is that we, experts are telling us that russian state actors broke into the dnc, stole these

emails, and other experts are now saying that russians are releasing these emails for the purpose of actually helping donald trump. i don't think it is coincidental that these emails were released on the each of our convention here. harris: sources tell fox news the leak appears to be tied to a hacking operation with links to the russian government but as you might imagine donald trump is not staying quiet. for his part the gop nominee hit social media with series of tweets, saying the democrats are quote, in total meltdown. hillary was involved in the email scandal because she is the only one with judgment so bad that such a thing could have happened, end quote. bill hemmer, i tell you this gets more complicated when you point a finger at hackers because i'm going to guess the dnc servers were more protected than the one in her basement. >> fbi investigation apparently announced an hour ago. this will have some legs to it. let's see where it goes. at one point they blamed the russians. earlier today there was suggestion trump team may have

had something to do with it. who knows what it is. in the big macro sense we'll see how satisfied or not these delegates and superdelegates are when the gavel drops 4:00 today. we'll get a better sense tomorrow when the roll call vote happens. you remember what happened in cleveland last week. i think what debbie wasserman schultz faced this morning on behalf of her florida delegation is just a small taste of what's to come. what does hillary clinton do on thursday night, to keep those bernie sanders supporters -- harris: do you think it will go that far into this week? she had an opportunity last night on "60 minutes" to do damage control. she didn't take it. she punted. >> my sense, if you look at the pew study from two weeks ago. harris: sure. >> 90% of the bernie sanders supporters say they will vote for hillary clinton s that true, a. b, that remains 10% outstanding.

ted cruz this convention will go off the rails. harris: let's watch. >> i think i told you a long time ago that, that the dnc was not running a fair operation. that they were supporting secretary clinton. so what i suggested to be true six months ago turns out in fact to be true. i'm not shocked but i am disappointed. and that is the way it is. harris: kennedy? kennedy: bernie sanders needs to grow a spine and address this tonight. his supporters are so far from unified and if 90% of the them are voting for hillary clinton that is assuming 90% of the them vote. this is the last thing that her campaign needs is a bunch of bernie sanders supporters frustrated, looking elsewhere or just being so apathetic they actually stay away. that sort of absenteeism that could do even more damage to her

campaign. he has to address it. he despises debbie wasserman schultz. harris: one thing we know, donna brazil, vice-chair of dnc. she has taken over in the interim. she apologized to bernie sanders. i imagine all those people who gave him money are waiting for apology too. sandra: donald trump using this as opportunity to continue to attack her judgment despite the dnc turmoil. bernie sanders will headline the opening night of the convention with a prime-time speech clinton campaign officials hope can unite the party. many sanders backers remain divided over hillary. some could make a final stand on the convention floor to show their support for the vermont senator. and trump campaign manager paul manifort, many others could flock to the gop nominee. >> point donald trump has been saying rigged political system needs to be changed and bernie sanders is suffer being that flight. we think supporters of bernie

wasserman-schultz's ahead. he said that on abc's show with george stephanopoulos. he got that a couple hours later. the protesters were almost a no-show in cleveland, ohio. the issues here in philly among the democratic party are much more aligned with some of the anarchists we have seen. i believe the geography of the east coast has to do with it. cleveland is harder to get to frankly. i was here in 2000 when the republicans were here in philadelphia. every afternoon at 4:00 those protesters would block exit and on-ramps for highways around the convention site. they would take chain-links and tie their arms together and they put pvc piping around the chains. that took police and security officials hours to clear the roads. listen, right now they're just getting going. watch where these folks are. sandra: the chanting you were just watching, they were coming

from city hall down to broad street where we are right here, the main artery from the city to the the convention center. harris. harris: i might mention, not to put too fine a point on this because the deputy city chair, or deputy city manager said bernie sanders didn't get a permit at that field where he wanted to go at 40,000 people, because they don't do non-recreational events. the way that is being read politically, can they keep bernie contained. he has been trying to get the permit for quite some time. like bill said, he didn't get everything he want. >> he didn't get the vp selection. tim kaine was not his choice. >> he wanted elizabeth warren. >> somebody in line with him. i'm listening to paul manifort, i'm old enough to last election, back in 2008, when you had all, excuse me all the mccain people we'll put sarah palin on ticket, all these women offended hillary clinton didn't get nomination. they will suddenly go to john mccain. it never happened. if i were paul manifort i would be a lot more concerned about

unifying his party in light of what happened in cleveland. kennedy: goes to show you, identity politics not necessarily the biggest lure. what trump team is doing over and over again, ham everying the point, the system is rigged, anti-trade they have in common with bernie sanders. they're not attacking him. they are saying he is a man of principle. his supporters should be really upset. they're doing that instead of offensive, here is woman, ladies will vote for her. sandra: bottom line it was seen as a republican fantasy that those bernie sanders would vote for donald trump. are you seeing change there, bill? >> sean spicer, communications director for rnc, deputy chair for rnc was with martha and me an hour ago on "america's newsroom." he is saying hey, 10 or 15% it makes a big deal. i think he is right about that but i don't know what that march begin is frankly. no one really knows -- margin. he threw high number as 40% i think that is exaggeration.

♪ kennedy: welcome back, this is "outnumbered" live from the dnc in philadelphia, the city of brotherly and sisterly love. hillary clinton pushing back on the honest and trustworthiness issues plaguing her campaign. on "60 minutes" clinton suggested she faces more scrutiny than other politicians and appearing to pin the blame, get this, on republicans. watch. >> i often feel like there is the hillary standard and then there is the standard for everybody else. >> what's the hillary standard? >> well it is, you know a lot, as you saw at the republican convention, unfounded, inaccurate, mean-spirited attacks with no basis in truth, reality, which take on a life of their own and for whatever reasons, and i don't want to try to analyze the reason. kennedy: oh, reality.

when lynette ton was asked if she felt threatened by chants of lock her up at gop's convention last week, she said this. >> i felt very sad, scott. i don't know what their convention was about other than criticizing me. i seem to be the only unifying theme that they had. there was no positive agenda. it was very dark, divisive campaign and the people who are speaking were painting a picture of our country that i did not recognize. negative, scapegoating, fear, bigotry, smears, i just was so, i was saddened by it. kennedy: you talking about the rnc or leaked emails? let's talk about the hillary standard a little bit because as many of us were watching fbi director james comey what could be possible charges against hillary clinton and deciding not to indict the former secretary of state seemed as though there was certainly a different

hillary standard. >> i think the irony here is overflowing. it is so thick. i mean emails, and fbi and another investigation. i mean you could not draw this stuff up. one thing i was looking at during the commercial break the speakers tonight. bernie sanders will precede michelle obama, julie. i'm assuming michelle obama speaks in the prime time 10:00 slot. >> i assume so. >> does bernie sanders appear in the 10:00 slot also? or do they slide him in prior before all the broadcast networks join the party? >> are they burying bernie. >> i can't see why they would bury bernie. to us, prime time is 8:00 p.m. on. just for general people. if they put him on 8:00 p.m. on he will be in good shape. >> you don't know what he is trying to negotiate. >> i have no idea. i don't know what he is going to say. i don't know that they know what he is going to say. that makes it so fascinating. why we should watch. i don't think so for the reasons he said earlier. he can't pull a ted cruz.

he endorsed her already. ted cruz hasn't. second he said his number one mission is to defeat donald trump. he can't be a ted cruz, that would be complete opposite. kennedy: what does he have to do? his delegates are furious. >> he has to say to them, listen, i know you're not happy, i know you're dissatisfied. i wish i were your nominee. nobody wishes it more than i do. donald trump is not the answer, if you don't vote for her you're voting for donald trump. he will probably prosecute the case against donald trump to paraphrase chris christie better than anybody else can for that reason. he has to tell his people to get on board or unless you will elect donald trump. kennedy: "60 minutes" buried part of the interview online, instead of showing most important news of the day, when hillary clinton and tim kaine were asked about the dne email. harris: first the acknowledgement she didn't know anything about these emails. then the punt when asked, had you known, do you consider it to

be a negative thing? how would you categorize it? what is interesting in all of this is, are we to be in the pocket where we believe that nobody would have briefed hillary clinton on yet another email scandal? is that the zone we're supposed to live in? because i don't really know anybody who does. wherever these people are they think, you know, kind of in a fantasy way living in that zone, they need to let us know because i would like to interview one of them. there is that but other part is how much can she really definitely say now our emails with the nation's top secret were laid to waste? how can she do that? how is server in somebody's basement, her private server more protected than dnc? kennedy: she is burned by her email scandal she is no longer reading emails. sandra: would be to own up and acknowledge responsibility that people have legitimate questions about her credibility and

sandra: as the democratic national convention gets underway today, hillary clinton campaign is reportedly looking to strike a balance between celebrating women and not making men feel left out. her team already made a powerful play for women voters, focusing on hoist tore call nature of clinton becoming first woman nominee after major party and possibly the first woman president. just last month her campaign releasing this video after she clinched nomination. >> so let's learn from the wisdom of every mother and father who teaches their daughters there is no limit on how big she can dream and how much she can achieve. >> i'm a little feminist growing up to help all women with equal rights. i hope you can be the first woman president of the whole united states. sandra: but now "the new york times" pointing out, quote, some advisors believe that overemphasizing mrs. clinton's historic achievement as the first woman

"new york times/cbs news poll" show her trailing trump among men by 13 points. that is sizable margin. >> yeah. so we keep talking about these areas where trump could scoop up. we're talking about the bernie sanders groups. we're talking about independence. they all seem to be somewhere and 10 and 15%. you add that up you can understand after spending so much money in battleground states they are not just any longer a statistical tie across the board. now he jumped ahead with his convention bounce. so i mean it is obvious that she needs to shore herself up. i take you back to earlier in the primary season when she had the women event, so few women showed up that the men were offered to be guests at the event. she will need everybody. i understand what you say based on her perspective as a woman, that may be her comfort zone. sometimes you win outside of her

they are very serious in discussions about forcing a challenge on the convention floor to tim kaine's nomination. why? some say he is too conservative. others say, eww he is too boring. sandra: wake up, harris. harris: something he actually said himself just a month ago. but this weekend he insisted he has a lot to add to the democratic ticket. okay, bill, first he says, i'm kind of boring myself. >> i think kaine was a good pick. i think he was obvious choice. a lot of people thought sherrod brown in ohio. didn't go that way. kaine was ready in 2008. he was passed over. i think with the pence pick, i think it levels out. harris: oh, really? >> that is my feeling. pence on one side, kaine on the other. some of these delegations, harris, though, they went with bernie sanders during the primary and caucus season. so when i'm on the floor at 4:00 today, i'm watching montana, north dakota, south dakota, idaho, vermont,

west virginia, oregon, alaska. harris: put your head on swivel. >> minnesota, wisconsin. harris: 22 states that sanders won. >> what are they going to do? that is the drama next 48 hours. harris: can we for a minute about money? if you gave your money to person bierne. now you found out through a set of emails that the dnc was pulling for one side over the other, i mean i'm reading places where people want their money back. that is not reality, but aren't you ticked? sandra: fed into that narrative that this is corrupt and system is broken. same people that were in favor of bernie sanders. so it fed right into their beliefs and their narratives. going back to kaine, he is a winner, bill hemmer. he never has lot an election. >> 8-0, is that right? harris: is that all it takeses? >> there is reason why democratic party came up with superdelegates. kennedy: oppose tremendously but you're right. >> so someone like bernie sanders --

harris: they didn't technically stopped him. he form ad movement. kennedy: look how long he held on to the campaign. part of it he had to wait to see if she was indicted and by default the nominee of the party. that was entirely possible until a few weeks ago. back to tim kaine. i think he is a safe pick. i agree. he and pence have a lot in common. i think they're essentially the same kind of politician but makes more sense for non-establishment, non-politician to pick someone who balances him out. more protests at dnc because a lot of those protesters are so upset because the establishment, this party has not worked for them. harris: we're looking at them right now. the noon hour, then again at 4:00 p.m., seem to be tune-in points for protesters. >> let me explain the pick of tim kaine, why it made sense for clinton perspective for polls. you could have pick ad cory booker, young, charismatic, african-american. you could have pick ad latino like perez. you could have picked a liberal

like elizabeth warren. that is not who they need to bring in to vote for her. missing link is white men. that is what tim kaine. i know this. take my word. they're not worried so much about consolidating african-american vote. they have it. they're not worried about the latino vote or liberal vote. harris: interesting what you're saying. it isn't just white men, but white men in special category. we did it with a special on insiders. people in the south feel left out by the democratic party. most are white males who were saying this. kennedy: do you think any will get passionate about tim kaine? who is jumping out of their skin. harris: he didn't think so. he called himself boring. kennedy: elizabeth warren may not have been wisest pick she generates so much passion. i think you get so much more from her. sandra: more than hillary clinton? kennedy: she outshines hillary clinton on a stage with the electorate. harris: finish your thought. sandra: that is my thought.

♪ sandra: bump for trump. a brand new poll showing gop nominee enjoying a postconvention bounce. a new head-to-head matchup finds donald trump beating hillary clinton 48-45%. that is a six-point bump for the billionaire businessman in just over a week. among independents, trump's lead is even wider. beating clinton 58-37%. we want to point out however, it is still early and the best measure of how both conventions affect the race could come a bit later when voters have had a chance and time to compare and contrast the two events. meanwhile trump not laying low this week, traveling to several pivotal swing states next few days and planning to give a policy speech to veterans. but he is not, bill hemmer,

leaving out those great poll numbers. just a few hours ago tweeting out, great poll numbers are coming out all over. is it too early to tell? >> yes it is. point of fact, yes. i think the trump team should be pleased with what they're seeing right now but any good pollster worth their salt would say give it two weeks. let's see how both conventions balance each other. sandra: tell me, historically, julie, how this works? when do we really know voters had a chance to look at both conventions to decide if they're changing their minds or sticking with original -- >> i would say exactly what bill said. i would caution we have olympics coming up in august, nobody will be focused in this except people like us. everybody is focused on rio. come labor day we'll see where the polls are trending. people should look at polls on state by state basis, not so much national polls. this will come down as always does to handful of states. let's see what they're doing in ohio, florida. sandra: fair point. last week historically you would see the opponent on the
