it is wednesday, july 27th. day two of the dnc filled with more drama as hillary clinton is officially nominated the democratic presidential nominee. her husband, former president bill clinton, taking center stage to make her case. >> but bernie's backers not going down without a fight flooding the streets in protests, even lighting flags on fire. >> feel the bern, feel the better than obern. >> i move that hillary clinton be selected as the nominee of the democratic party for president of the united states. >> she's the best darn change

i'm heather childers. >> and i'm abby huntsman. day three of the dnc kicking off in just a few hours. the stage set for president obama and vice president biden. >> we have fox news team coverage for you this morning. jackie is following trump hot on the campaign trail. >> but let's get right to doug live in philly with the latest from the dnc where it is still dark out there. good morning to you. >> reporter: morning. the dnc was able to heal some of the lingering damage with last night's roll call vote, but not without tension. a large group of protesters made their way from downtown philadelphia to just outside the security perimeter at the convention site around 9:00 pchl last night, at one point burping the american flag. as one woman steppeded in to put the fire out, the man who had actually lit the fire shouted what gives you the right to storm out someone's protest? meanwhile inside bernie sanders

best darn change maker i ever met will in my entire life. >> reporter: also speaking last night, mothers of the movement, mothers of eric garner, michael brown and trayvon martin against heavy handed policing. this was highly controversial. the fraternal order of police spoke out against it earlier in the week. it was balanced out however by another speech by the pittsburgh police chief, but lingering animosity about that. back to you. >> yes, some saying a real missed opportunity. members of police officers family as there, as well. doug, thank you. so donald trump and mike pence are hot on the campaign trail. >> and now a look at trump's new plan to put our heros first. jackie. >> reporter: good morning. it was donald trump's turn to take center stage with the veterans of foreign wars convention in charlotte. just one day after hillary clinton spoke at the same spot, trump went after his rival on benghazi, libya and her private e-mail server scandal.
1:05 am
a few military veterans shouting "lock her up." >> the other candidate in this race, you know her name, crooked hillary clinton, she recently said of the v.a. scandal that it's not as widespread as it's been purported to be. it's like she's trying to sweep it under the rug. >> lock her up! >> trump stressing revamping the v.a. as one of his top priorities and outlined a 10 point reform plan including a private white house hotline answered by a real person 24 hours a gay, firing employees who don't put the well-being of veterans first and more mental health care. the republican presidential nominee also knocking the democrats for blatantly ignoring isis at the dnc, even going so far as blaming them for creating the terror group. trump now heading to florida,
1:06 am
pennsylvania and ohio today, a busy day. >> jackie ibanez, thank you. well, someone that everyone wanted to hear from, bill clinton, he did speak yesterday making the case for why hillary clinton deserves to win. but is the popular former president an asset or is he a liability? >> here to weigh in, our political panel. welcome to both of you. good morning. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> guy, we'll start with you. a lot of people waiting to hear from hillary clinton. he could have gone so many directions with this speech. he decided to make it more personal talking about hillary clinton just being a real human being. >> more of a love story. >> and what exactly did bill have? >> well, the broader question is he an asset or liability and i think of course in the scheme of things he's an asset. he is much more popular thana b.
1:07 am
they go anklely asked me do you think he will try to go after any policy level or maybe try to rehabilitate her image on trustworthiness and i said i don't think so. i think he realizes that people have opinions of hillary clinton that are already set in stone especially when it comes to her honesty. what he can do is help her favorability by putting a human face and telling the types of stories that he ended up doing. >> do you think he helped her in that effort? >> i do. i don't think it was a home run speech. i thought it was a solid base hit speech. i'm not sure if it will have a lasting impact too far beyond the convention, but he certainly told a story about a woman that most people don't normally think about and imagine in their mind when they start thinking about hillary clinton. and that is a good thing for her. >> capri, would you have liked
1:08 am
to have heard more policy or just a personal aspect enough for you? >> that's really not the role of bill clinton in all of this. yes, he's the former president of the united states, but in context of the democratic national convention in 2016, he is the spouse of the nominee for president of the united states, not just a former president of the united states. so his role here was a traditional spousal role to talk about the relationship and what they are like as parents and how they have groan togethwn togeth the last 40 years both personally and professionally. so that's what he needed to do. as far as the broader question that guy and you mentioned at the top of the segment as far as asset versus liability, i think that he's a little bit of both depending on the audience. so with the traditional what i would call either reagan democrat or a bill clinton democrat, the more blue collar folks that you may think of in the industrial midwest, bill clinton is still incredibly popular with many of those
1:09 am
folks. folks that i represent certainly in ohio. on the flip side, we saw earlier in the show about the protesters speaking out because they were bernie or bust. and these bernie or bust people who are millennials and they are yu young and they think bill clinton is a sellout because they were not -- many weren't alive or super young when he was president of the united states. so bill clinton is not a unifying force for them and does not speak to them. so depending on the audience, bill clinton can an asset or liability. >> a lot of bernie's followers saying that bernie himself was a sellout. so interesting where -- >> everyone is a sell out. >> everyone is a sellout. >> right. all right. thank you both for joining us. and we'll have you back. the time 10 after the hour. and democrats under fire for one major campaign issue missing from the dnc, terrorism. >> you're looking at a party that is not concerned about

1:13 am
we need to change our foreign policy to focus on defeating and destroying isis, a word you didn't hear last night at the democrat convention. >> yesterday in philadelphia, 61 speakers came to the podium and not one of them named isis by name. >> that of course was mike pence and dud talking about the threat of isis and americans living in fear of lone wolf attack. but winning the war on terror
1:14 am
not a popular topic at the dnc. terror mentioned only a few times. >> i think amongst four different speaker, only mentioned five time. so who has the best plan to win the war on terror? here with us aaron mcclain. thank you very much for joining us. >> good to be here. >> so let's look quigley at tck two plans. first of all, donald trump's plan for fighting terrorism in the u.s. compared to clinton's, control our border, suspend immigration where there is a history of terrorism, screen applicants, control amount of future immigration into this country to prevent pockets of radicalization. and clinton's plan, give officials the right tools to prevent attacks, allow the fbi to stop gun sales to suspected terrorists, enact comprehensive background checks, keep military
1:15 am
style assault weapons off our streets and support law enforcement to build strong relationships with american muslim communities. so who has the stronger plan? >> well, both plans have elements that i think have experts a little confused and both are met with broad support from americans in a different almosts. hillary clinton's focus on gun control has met with a lot of push back from folks that the so-called no-fly/no-buy rule would not for example have stopped omar mateen who was for about a year on an fbi watch list but taken off of it well before the taeg thattack that h perpetrated. trump's plan focuses on immigration, something that plays very well in the republican primaries and his base. it's met with a fair amount of resistance particularly on the question of the immigration ban which is kind of undergone this torturous journey, originally a muslim ban, then muslim countries and now i believe banned from countries with
1:16 am
established history of terrorism. just a nebulous category. and i think folks are kind of confused how that will work considering that he also wants to work with allies, but of course some of those allies are the very countries that have a problem with terrorism. >> and those are their plans really here on the home front. when it comes to fighting terrorism overseas, here is what they say, trump saying america must unite the whole civilized world, he wants an intelligence gathering system and clinton saying intense guy the coalition campaign, step up support for local arab and civil forces, but sue d pursue diplomatic strategy and work with tech companies to fight propaganda online. who has the better plan? >> both plans would probably take a tougher line on isis than president obama has which is an
1:17 am
admittedly low bar, but nevertheless i think with secretary clinton, in some respects you would see merely intensification of what obama has been doing in terms of the level of froops there, maybe a slight pickup from that, the major difference between her and obama of course is her attitude toward the assad regime in syria. president obama has decided to cooperate with the russians and takes setly layoff assad despite resistance of his own advisers. of course hillary i think would return on a more pockish line on assad. with trump, he's shifted back and forth. on the question of troops, i think for sure we will see more money. i think he woulded loosen the rules of engage the and afterno would see afternoon aggressive line from the air. if you want to talk about the difference between clinton and trump abroad, it's the attitude
1:18 am
toward assad. i think clinton would be very hawkish, she would alter no-fly zone, called for a tough line. trump of course made a habit of saying wouldn't it be nice if we were friendly with the russians. i think he would continue the obama approach of cooperating with the russians and assad while bombing isis. >> i look forward to hearing the debates between the two of them to get a better sense. >> 81% of people say that they feel less safe than they did eight years ago. >> aaron maclean, thanks for being with us about. it's 18 after the top of the hour. protesters hit the streets targeting america and its pride and that's not all. they targeted fox news, too. >> you don't even know what i do. >> [ bleep ]. >> you have to see this. yes, geraldo rivera in the

welcome back. it was a big day in philly at the democratic national convention, but what was the reaction on social media? >> let's ask clayton morris. clayton, i think bill clinton is still the number one trending thing on twitter right now. >> that's right, and of course all eyes on the former president. how would he come out and talk
1:23 am
about his wife? obviously they have had a tumultuous relationship to be sure and it played out in public about, but he started out the speech with this line. watch. >> in the spring of 1971, i met a girl. >> that was all the internet needed to then of course as many memes as they could possibly go. so here are some of the tamer tweets that we can show you on television. erik says does he remember that it was hillary that he met. and dave tweeting this, surprised he can keep them all straight #don't believe a word he says. ouch. and then kitty tweeting this, and then i met another and another and you know how the story goes. >> that is funny. >> yeah, if you want to look at the less tame one, you can certainly do that this morning. and then also do you remember a few days ago donald trump comes out to the smoke machines in
1:24 am
silhouette, almost looked like a wwe style entrance? sean stoun cold austin will smash a beer can on someone's head. elizabeth banks had some fun with it, but people weren't sure what the heck was going on when she comes out to smoke screen and sort of to mock donald trump's entrance. people one exercising what in the heck is happening here? of course it was a joke. people took to -- started out kind of funny, but people were unclear. bill matthews tweeting i don't know how much elizabeth banks i expected, but probably like 1/50th as much elizabeth banks. and emily tweeted i like elizabeth banks a lot, but this is kind of a lot of elizabeth banks. i like elizabeth banks too. and steven tweeting apparently elizabeth banks is the new dnc chair. yeah, that's how donna brazile should have come out. would have been a good entrance.
1:25 am
and of course you remember we all have to play at home and try to pick who that is. and you remember back in 2004, it's the scream that undid the dean campaign and it played out like a meme for weeks. watch. >> we're going to oregon and michigan and then we're going to washington, d.c. to take back the white house. aagh! >> that filled the room. it was so loud. and then it played out on television and people were like what is going on, people morning of mocking his speech. howard dean may have had the funniest moment so far of the entire convention. here is him revising his scream role last night. watch. >> this race is going to be won on the ground. and it's going to be won in colorado, and in iowa, and north

1:38 am
now. i'm glad that they're happy and they think america is absolutely great. i think it's great, too, but it can be a whole lot better. >> speaking of the republicans and a donald trump, let's turn now to the campaign trail where the republican nominee spent two days campaigning in north carolina. >> and the real clear politics average poll now showing a very tight race with hillary only two points ahead. so how can he win the key battleground states? north carolina, ohio, florida, pennsylvania, all of them right now are very close. >> donald trump wouldn't know a ground game if it bit him in the butt. but i just have to comment on his statement about making america great again. the hypocrisy coming from conservatives when you have any progressive say anything negative about america, when there was the whole idea that barack obama didn't think we were exceptional. and now flip the script.
1:39 am
everything is bad. america is just in tatters. and there is no recognition even from our colleagues here at fox news who just ripped him to shreds for saying america is not good and he didn't even say it, but now it's the entire message. come on, that's not how he's going to win the battleground states. it will take a positive vision for the future. >> polls would suggest otherwise. phillip, you get the final word. >> 30 years of the clintons tearing other people down and now let's listen to a speech and know that they will build everybody up. >> thank you both for waking us up very spirited conversation this morning. >> love having you guys. have a good day. well, the time is about 20 until the top of the hour. and an emotional plea. mothers of black men killed in gun violence taking center stage at the dnc.

that to me is a national loss. >> the number of police deaths from gunshots from shooting deaths has risen 72% from just the same time period compared to last year. what about maybe inviting some of those family members, some of those mothers to join these mothers on stage? >> yeah, absolutely. i mean, at the end of the day, police are human, as well. they have mothers, daughters, brothers, sisters. so why is the country not hearing their fight, as well? it should go both ways. >> do you think this needs to be a political issue? because it seems likes's turned in to one. we have a statement from the from stern al order of police, they say a slap in the face to our men and women and their families who were victim sized by the same type of violence. obviously this is hitting home for a lot of people that have been impacted by this. >> absolutely it's a slap in the face. you look at dallas, you look at the officers who gave their
