12:00 pm
a few hours from now i will head on to the floor of the convention center. vice president joe biden, president obama and tim kaine. all up. thanks for being here. see you tonight. it's noon on the west coast, 3:00 in philadelphia where tonight, the president of the united states will address the democratic national convention and make the case for hillary clinton to take his job. this morning, we heard him slam donald trump's intelligence, and lack thereof, and hours later, trump fired back on a whole slew of people. >> i'm not like obama where he tells you what he's going to do. i believe hillary clinton is even more bought and paid for than barack obama. huma abedin is married to anthony weiner, who is a sleeze ball and pervert.
12:01 pm
>> trump is scheduled to take a town hall this hour. we will take you there live to see what's going to happen. plus, prosecutors in baltimore dropping all charges against all the police officers connected in any way with the death of freddie gray. i'll speak live with the city's mayor, stephanie rawlings blake and i'll get her reaction to donald trump's statements. and dozens of officers killed on the job this year, 11 this month alone. killers ambushing police as they try to keep us safe. ahead, details of the jump, and how you can help keep the cops safe. let's get to it. live from philadelphia, "shepard smith reporting." wells fargo center in fil , philly, where we'll hear from hillary clinton's most high backer of all, president obama. he and joe biden are headlines tonight's speeches. the big-name speakers highlight divisions among rival
12:02 pm
republicans whose only living presidents and previous nominees skipped the convention all together. earlier today, both the president and the vice president took dead aim at the republican nominee, donald trump. >> basic knowledge about the world, or what a nuclear triad is, or where various countries are, or the difference between sunni and shi,ia, in the muslim world, these are things he doesn't know and hasn't spent a lot of time to find out about. >> the truth is donald trump knows nothing about foreign -- nor should he based upon his background. the thing that bothering me is i don't see any attempt for him to go out and get people who really know. >> the vice president willy geist on the "today" show, donald trump wasted no time going after president obama's legacy and trying to tie it to hillary clinton. >> i think president obama has
12:03 pm
been the most ignorant president in our history. he has been a disaster as a president. he will go down as one of the worst presidents in the history of our country. it is a mess. and i believe that hillary clinton will be even worse. >> trump also pushed back at reports russia was behind the leak from e-mails from the democratic party headquarters. as fox news reported sources tell us the evidence points to the russian government. investigators have not given a motive, not yet any way. but hillary clinton's campaign accuses russia's president, vladimir putin, trying to influence the election to help donald trump win. both putin and donald trump deny that. today reporters asked trump, he refused call on putin, to keep his hands out of american politics. >> i'm not going to do putin what to do. why should i tell putin not to do? it's not whether it's china, or russia about the hacking.
12:04 pm
it's the things in the e-mails. >> it's actually about both of those things, it's about. donald trump's running mate, make pence took mike pence said, if it is russia and they are interfering in our elections, i can assure you both parties and the united states government will ensure there are serious consequences. but like trump, his running mate said the focus should be on what's in the e-mails rather than who was behind the attack. more from donald trump's news conference ahead. day 3, the gop criticized the national security here, but that's exactly what's on tap tonight. >> reporter: absolutely, shepard e a , and i'm told that's going to change tonight. you have a strong lineup of former national security advisors, including those who have spent a lot of time in the situation room, including president obama, vice president biden, as well as we're going to hear tonight from former defense secretary, leon paneda.
12:05 pm
i'm told on the one hand they don't want to treat donald trump as a serious person but they are have to treat him as a serious candidate. that is the message to their par party and they're going to take him apart piece by piece on national security issues. expect the president to speak about him without dnecessarily names him, but like we saw hillary clinton do in san diego where she used trump's own words against him on national security, that's what we expect the president to do tonight from the stage behind me. we just had a practice with 43 broadway stars who were singing, "love sweet love," that's what the world needs now, and deena from wicked will be singing this tonight. i'm told this is going to be very much a focus on national security and gun liancviolence, shepard? >> analysts say the democrats are making a play for the center? >> reporter: they are making a play for the center, and it's
12:06 pm
clear that day that convention ends, hillary clinton and tim kaine will be taking a 1,000 mile bus ride across pennsylvania and ohio, and they are clearly trying to reach out to what they see as moderate republicans who they believe they could sway in this election. we've just learned that hillary clinton will sit down for the first time with fox news on sunday with chris wallace, fox news sunday. he isset getting the first interview with hillary clinton, since she's the first woman to be president. but we also know tonight you're going to hear from michael bloom ber berg, a former republican. you're going to start hearing from more and more republicans talking about hillary clinton's national security credentials. we also know tonight there will be admiral john hudson who used to be the navy's top lawyer. he was a former lawyer.
12:07 pm
he is now supporting hillary clinton, and he made his name back in 2004 by signing an open letter to president bush about prisoner abuse. so you're going to see more and more republicans coming out for hillary clinton, that's part of the campaign's attempt to peel away those moderate republicans from the donald trump rnc efforts. back to you, shep. >> jennifer, thanks. betsie woodroof is here with me a daily contributor. i've never seen republicans give democratic speeches. >> it's a little curious. >> it's fascinating that's the situation they're in. >> without a doubt. i think an interesting counter point is the fact bernie sanders supporters are so energietically and excitedly trouble making at this convention. we have republicans on stage, but bernie backers storming the outside of the arena and doing a sit-in, in the media tent. there's kind of weird and very acute tension in the democratic party. do they reach out to republicans
12:08 pm
at the expense of some of the very generic base voters, and in light of the lineup that looks like what they're doing. >> there's quite a bit of push and pull. it was clear through the platform debate and every action that bernie supporters were trying to pull to the left, now you could get the impression at least she's being pulled right and they're not going to like that. so it's like who -- is everybody going to end up angry here? >> it's definitely plausible, yeah. another interesting point is tim kaine has recently indicated he's going to come at an opposition to the transspecif p trade deal. operation to tpp was one of their central issues here. the arena is full of "no tpp" signs. and michael bloomberg has a star in the convention. on the one hand they'll try to make everybody happy, but lots of folks will be frustrated. >> did you feel unity was coming
12:09 pm
to the place? did you hear the boos? >> unity seem to becoming in bits and starts. the moment when bernie sanders read in the nominee for hillary clinton, supporters crying, particularly in the florida delegation, i speak to delegates who said we're going to support hillary because we trust bernie and because we believe him. at the same time, as soon as bernie was done talking, hundreds of supporters marched out of the arena, and a protracted sit in. >> they sat there for a long time. >> fun for them. but unity is certainly not eminent. >> there is this claim and it's continuing that the dnc is trying to silent their voices and they don't seem happy about that. you actually see evidence of it. >> and whether they're doing something nepharious, the fact that perception exists is more evident the fact these sanders supporters are really frustrated how much has gone forward. >> how much internally is this
12:10 pm
debbie wasserman schultz debacle? >> it's a mess. they're lucky she got pushed away from the headlines. the dnc is kind of a big deal. they have to find some be to right the ship there at what might be one of the most presidential months in the presidential contest this far. that's a problem. >> that asserts trying to figure out who it will be is happening while they're putting on this convention. we talked about a shadow convention going on in cleveland. there's that going on here, too. >> it's not an envyable position to be in. >> good to see you. >> likewise. a good poll show what americans have to say about abortion and how that lines up with where the democrats stand the issue. day 3 from the democratic national convention in philadelphia. last night the dnc rolled on as the delegates officially made clinton their nominee.

substantial restrictions. 62% of pro-choice said that's their position, as well, and 62% of those surveyed overall say they oppose the use of taxpayer dollars for abortions. that last number is significant because hillary clinton is vowing not only to expand access to abortion, but she wants to fight the hyde amendment, the issue that blocks the flow of federal tax dollars to fund a boards, a move that's drawing praise from the planned parenthood president who spoke at the convention last night. >> she will always stabbed nd u the right of every woman to access a full range of reproductive healthcare, including abortion, no matter her economic status. >> reporter: initially, pro-choice groups were less than ent enthesed about tim kaine. he's made it clear he's pro life and indicate said his sport fup for a ban on abortions and would require young women to get

presumptive nominee is trying to stir up support for the sanders backers. he name is jill stein, calling herself an alternative to hillary clinton. she stands on big issues including universal healthcare, and free education. kennedy, 8:00 on fox business network right at the dial. yesterday you met her in the parking lot? >> met her in the concourse at wells fargo. >> and all the sudden? >> it was mayhem. we talked around, a few people came up to take selfies, and it was at the exact moment senator sanders was inside conceding that his presidential campaign was over and he called for hillary clinton, who had the formal nomination. and she was outside being swarmed by his supporters. people literally in tears, and she was reaching out to them, she was physically hugging many of them which is trying to console them and bring them on board. she said that she is the new hope, she has the consistent and unified message. she may be an underdog but she's
12:21 pm
fighting like crazy to get these supporters to pay attention to her and get on the green train. >> so what you got? show me? >> all right, shep, here's jill stein and i mingling. >> reporter: green party candidate dr. jill stein is inviting pro-sandering supporters to switch their alliances to the green, offering hope to those who feel cheated by the system, and she claims hillary stole the nomination. >> reporter: you have experienced this kind of enthusiasm so far? >> it's been nonstop. i cannot walk down the street. what you're seeing is just a tiny piece of what happens when i'm walking down the street. [ chanting ] >> she's very excited. >> i think people's hearts are broken. their feelings are extremely hurt. >> reporter: yeah. >> not how we move forward and create america in a world that we trust. they're letting go of a candidacy they so believed in and here you are.
12:22 pm
is there enough support for to you offer to bernie sanders supporters? >> absolutely. we know what's going to happen in the democratic party. it is controlled by insiders. we know that hillary clinton has had the fix-in from the start, through duebbie wasserman schultz, who has now been rewarded for her back stabbing. they did donald trump the biggest favor possible by sabotaging bernie sanders campaign. [ chanting ] >> thank you for everything you are doing, continuing this revolution. >> it's a very emotional time. >> yes. >> many of us feel very alien e alienated by the parties. >> you and bernie sanders are running a party candidate. we want to get you on the debate stage. >> we're doing everybody in our power. we are both coming up in the polls, you know, with few exceptions. my campaign has not received air time.
12:23 pm
>> reporter: dr. stein was engulfed by an imprompt press conference, and others intrigued by her movement. >> [ chanting ] >> they rely on your fear. >> what's she screaming about? why is she screaming? that's weird. >> she's desperately trying to get attention in a short amount of time. she thinks that she can take on the bernie mantel. >> not acting like that. it was a very passionate day, she had a lot of people screening at her, and screaming "jill go home," so she's trying to breakthrough the clutter. if it she seeing a camera, she's going to yell into it and try and shake people into submission to get on board her campaign. >> what did you think of her? >> she's very interesting, and -- >> does she seem smart? >> she's a physician from massachusetts, harvard educated. >> i've read about her. >> yeah, and is she -- she has
12:24 pm
been a green partier for two presidential cycles now. she gottic canned o kicked out and arrested last time and she and gary johnson have become allies, on the libretarian ticket. >> if they get 15% in the polls that's the only way you get in? >> yes, it's pretty loopy, arbitra arbitrary. she's got anywhere between 3 and 7% right now. governor johnson is polling higher than she is, but i think if -- she's hoping if it she gets more attention, bernie sanders supporters will get on board and it will create a c confilgration she can get on the debate stage and challenge hillary clinton, but specifically donald trump. she seeing them as one in the same. >> hillary clinton and donald trump? >> yep. >> she said they're both controlled by corporate interest, and they're warmongers and she is the only one who is not taking money from super pacs
12:25 pm
or corporations. >> all right. something to watch. >> yeah, she's -- an interesting lady and these are crazy times, and i think it took a lot of nerve for her to come to that arena at that exact time and meet a bunch of people who were, as you can see, very emotional. >> yeah. >> and upset by -- >> that was interesting. >> thank you, kennedy. >> later. >> you know. two lawmakers set up a food competition on the sidelines of the dnc pitting new york against philly. new york congresswoman carolyn maloney and the pennsylvania congressman brendan doyle brought in judges from each state. they decided between favorites like cheesecake from juniors in new york city, and cheesestakes from pat's kick of steaks. philly was the winner. >> i'm tasattempting to be gracs with my friend carolyn standing next to me, but it's always nice
12:26 pm
as a philadelphia n itn it's ni wind. >> other competition was new york pretzels against new york sandwiches. you can't put cheesecake against cheesesteak. that's -- that's dumb. like they're two different things. cheesesteak, that's dumb. >> they're not in the same category. >> that's dumb. one is a dessert, and one is a sandwich, unless i misunderstanding one's story. >> that's like comparing a bikini and a corvette, very different. >> i'm more disappointed in philadelphia because i like new york and hate everything philadelphia. it's just a supporports thing. the flyers, and -- >> someone has a case of the wednesdays. >> don't like them. nets and yankees and stuff. you know. if philly and new york started
12:27 pm
liking each other, and pigs started flying, it wouldn't be good. >> i don't need your cheesecake. >> i had the cheesesteak. and today, donald trump asked russia to get to the bottom of hillary clinton missing e-mails. today, donald trump asked russia -- russia -- to get to the bottom of hillary clinton's missing e-mails, asked them to do that. the clinton camp accused him of encouraging espionage. now trump is trying to clarify what he meant. also in baltimore, the prosecutor who has been going after the police in the death of freddie gray today announced all the charges will now be dropped. there will be no more trials. but she also said she still believes it was a homicide. if she believes it is a homicide then why is she bailing in donald trump has weighed in, in a big way. the mayor of baltimore, stephanie rawlings blake is our guest next for the top of the news, bottom of the hour.
12:28 pm
this just got interesting.

donald trump and his running mate, mike pence holding a town tall in this hour, scranton, pennsylvania. this was supposed to begin at 3:00, a half hour ago, but it didn't. these things start late. they like to have people in there and get them fired up before trump comes to speak. when it starts we'll take you there. earlier he took some shots at hillary clinton in the dnc. the republican nominee challenged russia -- russia -- to find the former secretary of state's missing e-mails. >> russia, if you're listening, i hope you're able to find the 30,000 e-mails that are missing. i think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press. let's see if that happens. >> clinton's camp told politico, they are threatening russia commit espionage. and donald trump tweeted if russia or any other country has hillary clinton's 30,000 deleted
12:34 pm
e-mails perhaps they should share them with the fbi unquote. carl cameron's in toledo where trump is set to hold another rally tonight in toledo. this was a lot even for donald trump. >> right, and it's a pretty fair bet to the extent that anything is likely in the trump campaign to hold over. he will talk about it in his scranton town hall coming up in just a few minutes. he usually runs late. and heel talk abo'll talk about in toledo. this has been quite an astonishing day. you played what he did and said and tried to sort of dial it down, by saying provide it to the fbi. the campaign is utterly denying that he implied what people have inferred, notwithstanding what he actually said. and it's entirely likely that trump's supporters as they have been for the last year of his campaign, will likely shrug it all off and blake the medme the

making mountains out of mole hills, and his correct dialogue is often misconstrued or misunderstood, and his contentions are good and this is a bunch of nothing. in the past, president ial candidates would have faced a feeding frenzy, and to understand the depth of the problems, it's worth noting as soon as hillary clinton accepts the nomination for the democratic nomination, both of these candidates will start getting classified security briefings, so they will have at their fingertips, and sometimes on the tip of their tongues things that public isn't supposed to know about. our enemieenemies, shep. >> he talked about policy a little bit during the news conference. >> yes, it mostly focused on attacks on president obama, and hillary clinton, and bill clinton, too. but, he did. he was asked about the minimum
12:36 pm
wake and sa wage and said he is in favor of raising it to $10 and sort of fluctuated on that a little bit, but suggested $10 is the right number and said that's done and states ultimately should have the opportunity to raise it higher, which he predicted they would and there had. there are states with $15 minimum wages by legislative statutes. that puts him at odds with conservative republicans arguing wage hikes for years you're going to close down businesses that can't afford that type of staff and salary overhead. it's an interesting insertion of policy in the middle of what was a very, very combative feisty news conference, clearly intended to take some of the headlines away from the democratic national convention in philadelphia, and insert more of the controversial ones about the bernie sanders being picked off and disarray and chaos during the first day of the
12:37 pm
democratic national convention of the shep? >> carl, thank you. prosecutors in baltimore dropped all charges in one way or another, saying the chances of a conviction were slim because the police investigation was bias from the beginning. gray's mother says police killed her son, and lied about the investigation. the state's attorney, marilyn mosby also said that she still blames police for his death. freddie gray died of course in april of last year after his neck broke in the back of a police van. officers put gray inside the van but didn't buckle him in. the decision to drop the charges comes after a judge acquitted three officers -- three of the six officers and a fourth officer had a mistrial. gray's death sparked, as you might remember, protest in baltimore, over police brutality. with us now is stephanie rawlings-bla rawlings-blake, secretary of the dnc and led the roll call vote to nominate hillary clinton.
12:38 pm
that must have been a thing for a lifelong democrat. >> it was amazing to be part of that history in that way. i've been coming to conventions since '92. it was a goose bump moment. >> it had to have been. and you have one more big job this week? >> yeah, we are gaveling at another meeting before the week is out. >> okay. >> to the business of baltimore, as you might imagine. >> yes. >> the consensus seemed to be it's message seemed to be that there was little or no evidence to support the big-picture claims officers acted unreasonable, and will fully, disregarded their training in general orders when they decided not to buckle freddie gray in the back of a policeman and that led to his death. that's basically what they're saying. what are your thoughts? >> i acknowledge the state's attorney has decided not to move forward with the charges. the cases are behind us. administrative investigation will move forward for all -- >> so internal investigation continues? >> absolutely will continue. there's process just like the cases were a process, and you
12:39 pm
know, i just caution -- i caution the public all the time about the fact that justice as a process, it's not a verdict, and if you actually take a look at the responsor the ruling of judge williams, there were a lot of things that were concerning, so i don't want to -- >> what kind of things were concern something. >> the acquisitions that the prosecution withheld excuplatory evidence that repeatedly -- and it -- there were some other things that the judge didn't -- the judge clearly felt that the evidence that was presented didn't meet the charges that were filed. >> listen to what the prosecutor said today. >> we do not believe that freddie gray killed himself. we stand by the medical examiner's determination that freddie gray's death of a

homicide. >> reaction? >> she's very -- you know, she's independently elected official in the state with a very big responsibility and that is to have even-handed justice, and to make sure that the people of our city respect the judicial process. i think when you say things to give people pause they're not getting a just outcome and it's clearly -- >> was justice served here? >> anyone, whether you're a ploo police officer or anyone off the street, has the right as an american to be not found -- >> was justice served though? >> justice is a process, and the process was fair, and it was even and you know, she mentioned that she doesn't have the choice to say whether it goes before the -- the case goes before the judge or the jury. if i get picked up for having
12:41 pm
illegal drugs, the prosecutor does not have the choice. >> but mayor, in this case, a man died in the back of a police van. the acquisition was, and the prosecutor still insists this was a homicide, that officer didn't buckle -- >> when you say that, there's evidence that you have to provide in order for that to be the case. the judge has said on multiple occasions that is not the case. there's difference between responsible and guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. and that's why you go to court. >> was the prosecution not handled well? >> i'm not making that judgment call. the judge made the determination based on the information that was provided to him. he made a decision that was fair. he's one of the most highly ordered judges on the circuit court in maryland. i have the utmost respect for him. if you actually read his report, you will see why he made his decision. >> were the prosecutors helpful or not? >> they're absolutely not helpful when you -- >> do you wish they would stop? >> -- when you insinuate the process is rigged and that is, i
12:42 pm
think, an unfair statement about the judge, and about the investigation, especially when she purported to do her own independent investigation in her initial press conference. >> let's lirsten to what donald trump said today. >> i do have a reaction to the prosecutor in baltimore who indicted those police officers. i do. i think she ought to prosecute herse herself, okay? i think it was disgraceful and the news conference where she had where they were guilty before anybody even knew the facts. >> is he right? >> you'll never find me agreeing with donald trump. you know, he says some is off the wall stuff. he's encouraged espionage today, so i don't -- i'm not responding to anything that he is putting out there. >> he's a republican candidate -- >> i can hear perfectly well. i'm not responding to him. >> is that appropriate what he
12:43 pm
did? >> again -- my -- i can hear you and i can hear him and i'm not responding. >> you don't seem happy. >> i think that you're trying to read my mind and -- >> i just want to know your thoughts on the matter, because it is a political football at this moment. >> i know that you want to know, but i've said multiple times that i'm not responding to donald trump. >> we have word from sources in baltimore there will be police protection. are you concerned and who is your message for the people of baltimore in the wake of this decision? >> they'll be police? i didn't hear. >> you there will be know increased police presence is available. >> we're always going to be prepared for every it's out and -- the judge's ruling in this every case was prepared and as you saw, we had peace in the city, although there were lots of press there trying to see what they were going to find in baltimore, that it would erupt again and that did not happen and it will not happen. we're very prepared moving forward. >> all the best to you, and thank you very much. >> thank you. >> for stopping by, i appreciate it. >> thanks.
