qualified, more so than himself, more so than her husband, bill clinton, to be the president of the united states. he also tore into donald trump in ways that we have never seen before. >> donald trump has a passion, too, it's himself. >> there's nothing suspicious in my tax returns, believe me. he is >> he's trying to tell us he cares about the middle class. give me a break. that's a bunch of malarkey. he has no clue about what makes america great. he has no clue period. >> ronald regan called america a shining star on a hill. donald trump calls it a crime scene. we don't look to be ruled. donald trump aloof. >> at one point the fired up crowd began chanting u.s. amp, u.s.a. on the convention floor at the time that was going on tweeted

krystal ball. good morning. >> thanks for having us, abby. >> president obama you said tonight i ask you to do for hillary clinton what you did for me. i ask you to carry her the same way you carried me. krystal, did he do his job? >> i can tell you it was electrifying in the room. and he not only laid out the case for hillary clinton and made the case that she is the natural heir to his legacy and the vision of hope that he spelled out so compellingly eight years ago that americans fell in love with, he also really brought out the differences between hillary clinton's image and brak obama and the democratic party's image for the country, very optimistic one where we already believe in the greatness of this great nation but always -- always also understand that we can get better and contrasting that with donald trump's more pessimistic dark view that america is not

great, the military is a disaster and we are weak. he made that contrast really well. keep in mind the president is pretty popular, more popular than either of these candidates actually. >> you know, the main goal coming out of these conventions, gabby, is to unite the party. as we saw especially on the first day, there are a lot of disenfranchised bernie sanders supporters. there are other folks who are not on board from hillary clinton. so hearing from speakers last night, did they do their job? are there people on board that are now more excited? >> yeah. hearing the reception alone when president obama entertd theed t arena and i think it's safe to say he did play to some bernie sanders supporters and those who are defecting or swallowing their pride to embrace the democratic presidential ticket. going beyond this a thrown where the convention is taking place, when you consider the millions of americans, middle class

americans, blue collar workers in states like pennsylvania and ohio, i think that president obama's message that hillary clinton would continue an economic agenda that has been devastating to these americans, it's difficult to see them embracing them enthusiastically. >> turning to the trump trail where the republican nominee wrapped up a press conference by challenging clinton to hold one of her own. >> 230 days, no news conference for hillary clinton. you ought to check it out because there's a lot going on. >> so is donald trump stealing the spotlight from the democrats? gabby, i'll let you respond to this one first. >> yeah, i think he was pretty effective yesterday in distracting from the turbulent days that we've seen here so far at the democratic national convention, but i also think much of it was on detriment.

at a republican national briefing reporters weren't asking about what's been happening at the democratic convention, we were asking about reactions for donald trump imploring russia to find the missing e-mails. that's not what democrats want to talk about. they want to be talking about hillary clinton going into the swing states and the battleground states and carrying a message that has -- you know, that she will continue the legacy of president obama. that's not what we were talking about yesterday because of the press conference that donald trump held. i can almost hear him saying right now this is a totally dishonest media at work, but at some point he has to accept responsibility for distracting away from what republicans like to focus on. >> he's so predictable these days, huh? krystal, donald trump saying she has not had a press conference in 235 days. you've run for office yourself.

how important is it for her to get out there and have these press conferences and communicate with the american people. >> yes, donald trump loves to give a press conference but he also takes credentials away from the news coverage he doesn't enjoy. i'm not sure that he's the best person to take this criticism from, but i do think it's true. one of the great challenges for hillary clinton is she's so polished and so composed after so many years in the public spotlight that it's very hard to get that sort of natural human reaction from her and press conferences obviously are more freewheeling. her team, and she feels more comfortable in sort of a sit-down interview setting where they can be more prepared and where it's a little more controlled. so i would encourage them, actually, to do a little bit more press conference, be a little bit more available, be a little bit more relaxed but that's an area that's just simply not her strength. >> good advice.

not hear is the truth about her record. here to fill us in is adam goodman. adam, thanks to you. thanks for waking up. >> reporter: good morning. nice to see you again. >> nice to see you. we'll start with that. what are we not hearing about her record that you feel the american people need to hear right now? >> reporter: well, you know, one of the funniest parts of last night's presentation -- by the way, democrats put on a great show, right? it's been a great show but you have to see what they're actually saying to us. remember the comedy sketch with gene sperling, the former economic advisor to obama and the comedian savage. so they started to hit donald trump about the debt. well, this is a president, of course, who increased debt by over $8 trillion and it's hillary clinton who is supposed to be the change maker is going to inherit that kind of change, i think she has a lot to answer for. and there's a lot that's happening beyond the floor here

where people are arresttive about her record. >> is the buildup bigger than the candidate? also increasing not only poverty but increasing violence. >> yeah. no question that there's a show going on here. i call it camelot harkening back to the days of jfk. everything is good. america is good. america is great. we're doing just fine and yet we have record amounts of poverty. the wealth gap is increasing. the middle class is shrinking. all of these things are apparently parts of the obama legacy that hillary clinton not only will inherit but will try to champion. remember, she got the torch, the baton passed last night. i think she's willing to carry it for eight more years of obama. i don't think that's what america is looking for. >> what they do look at are what the polls show. they see when it comes to likability and trust, adam,

she's really struggling in those areas. it seems that's what her focus is, making her appear as human as possible. >> there's no question. the speech by bill clinton, bill clinton's a tremendous story teller, you've got to give him that, he's a great story teller. he was telling the story like he's talking about ward and jim cleaver or little house on the prairie. isn't that wonderful we fit into that story line. we do not. they may be a lot of things but bill and hillary clinton are not that. i think the humanization part, ultimately, guys, will depend whether or not hillary clinton who comes on stage tonight, this has been a ramp up to her, can she bring it? that's an open question. >> there was not a lot of discussion, i was talking about this earlier, about the things that she accomplished as secretary of state. we had president obama speaking last night and he spent a majority of his speech talking about the things that he had done. >> right. >> yeah.

so, you know, what does that say she was part of his administration for four years as secretary of state? >> well, i think the president wanted to make sure his legacy was alive, well, and in fact last night as much as he was trying to shower hillary clinton with his endorsement and his support. and if you asked any american, what has hillary clinton ever done as secretary of state other than the controversies about e-mail and benghazi, they're kind of stumped. she has to convince us that her years as secretary of state had merit and value and bottom line consequence for the american people. that's a heavy lift. >> we're going to leave it there. adam goodman, thank you for being with us. >> thank you. always enjoy it. terrorist talks, even with the heinous attack over seas, the life of a priest taken by isis militants.

can't help but have the image of this catholic priest in france being beheaded by someone who has allegiance to isis in the back of your mind as this convention goes on. here in philadelphia yesterday we went and spoke to a catholic priest here, tom higgins. he heads the holy innocence parish in north philly, and we asked him about this radical islamic threat, the nature of the threat. we just wanted to know what he thought about radical islam. this is what he had to say. >> call it what it is, radical isis radical islam. it's something that exists more as a philosophy than as a state of a country and how do you confront it is something i think we're still grappling with, peter. i honestly don't think our political leaders, our military leaders know how to confront it nor do our church leaders. >> father tom was very candid

and honest with us. what he said, we're not sure if our political leaders know how to deal with it speaks for many people. he understands there's a radical element coming, persecuting christians. here at the dnc we're not hearing a lot from those who want to be the next commander in chief how to deal with this. >> our own cath rick herrick said terrorists validated. anyone can go out and put out the heinous attacks and isis claims responsibility even though they might have known nothing about it. >> yeah. we can create new categories for everything if we want. at the end of the day you still have a dead priest decapitated by a radicalist while saying mass in front of his parishioners. the priest went on to talk about ideology as well is what motivates them. if we don't get at the ideology

around the neighborhood. judging from some of the protesters here, that would not be a pretty sight. >> there was a llama type of animal wandering around as well. >> in the streets of philly? >> yes, today. >> reporter: good to be back. >> thank you, doug. donald trump dominated stealing the spotlight from the dnc. >> the republican nominee wrapping up a day of non-stop media coverage by firing back against president obama on twitter. >> jackie ibanez here. >> reporter: he called president obama ignorant. the gop taking to twitter slamming the presidential dnc speech saying america is not great specifically pointing out police officers are in more danger than ever. writing, quote, shooting deaths of police officers up 78% this year. we must restore law and order and protect our great law enforcement officers. at a time when the coverage is supposed to belong to the party's convention, well, trump has taken over.

president accomplished a lot in eight years, pulling us back from the brink of a financial collapse, bringing unemployment down, wages are still too low, right? so there's still work to be done there. while he ensures millions of americans or still more people need health insurance. there's still work there. the progress in our country is never going to stop. we're always going to keep pushing for that more perfect union. we do need a change maker to do that, not just someone to make speeches but someone who's been in the trenches. hillary clinton may not be the flashiest person but she actually knows how to get this work done. tim kaine, this is a guy who i think we'd all agree, ted cruz is not the easiest person to get along with. tim kaine as a democrat is a guy who actually gets along with ted cruz. he's respected by his colleagues on the other side of the aisle. he could rerealally serve in th

role that joe biden has as being the deal maker and bringing people together. >> we have more people living in poverty right now. we have more people on food stamps. we have more people giving up looking for a job altogether. we heard jackie ibanez saying shooting the police officers are up 78%. is all of that and more something hillary clinton would be wise to attach herself to? >> reporter: well, look, i mean, isn't change maker such a wonderful sort of nonsense term. it's right up there with thought leader for me. this is a perennial problem for the democratic party. they always want to see themselves as the agents in change even when they are in charge. krystal did a great job communicating that mindset. the reason you are failing as a democrat in power, it's not because your policies are bad, leading to bad results, it's because the opposition is so entrenched. structural inequality,

republicans in congress, what have you, right, are holding you back. that's why you're failing. that's why you're not moving forward. from hillary's perspective, it's not that obama has a legacy of bad policy, it's that he hasn't been able to go far enough. she's going to push it. it's very convenient. >> when you are president you do have to work through congress and we, as you know, have divided government right now. he's not a magician, but i would say, you know, i don't think anyone is saying this president failed. he was greeted by this audience. it was electrifying in there. this is someone who cracked down on the big banks, brought us back from the brink of a financial collapse, who saved gm, who took out bin laden, who insured millions of americans. i don't think anyone here or around the country at this point he has a positive approval rating. not a lot of people are looking at this presidency as a failure. we see that more work needs to be done. >> certainly not the hillary clinton campaign because president obama cleared his

schedule to campaign every single day with hillary come october. so the question now, aaron, how worried is the clinton campaign that they're having him out there so much? >> reporter: well, they ought to be very worried about the state of the election, right? and to the extent that they're worried about having barack obama with them, it's an interesting contrast right now. krystal is right, president obama is a very popular president. 69% of americans think the country is moving in the wrong direction. kind of a strange dichotomy. they're going to have him out there with them. it's going to go how it's going to go. they shouldn't be worried about the election overall. donald trump is up in the polls. hillary clinton will bounce out of this election herself. if she goes back to where she was two, three points nationally, that is not a great place to be. not a great place to be in a change year, an anti-establishment year. >> her campaign knows the

30,000 e-mails that are missing. i think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press. >> so what exactly is going on here? we have the adjunct fellow at the manhattan institute, a fox news reporter "a reporter's journey." judy, you are the perfect person to be here. is russia really trying to help the trump campaign? >> well, we don't know that. that is one of the many questions the fbi is looking into and investigating in this extraordinary hacking of dnc information. it is known that is with high confidence, which is an intelligence estimate by our intelligence agency that this hack of the dnc was probably russian. we know that the fsb which is one of two intelligence agencies of the russian republic probably

started hacking the dnc system last summer. the second military intelligence agency, the gru, began more recently. now intelligence our side is pretty convinced that the russians did this, but we don't know why. did putin order this? did someone in the chain of command of these intelligence agencies decide they need to do this on their own? is there political motive or was this kind of part of the routine russian hacking and surveillance? >> judy, we've been talking about this over the night, that the democratic party is now using this as a distraction though to some of the issues that they've had going on including hillary clinton using that private e-mail server. if russians were able to hack into the dnc why were they not

able to hack into hillary clinton's e-mails on a private server. >> well, we don't know that they weren't. that was certainly suggested as a possibility by james comey, the cia director, who talked about her careless handling of classified information. that's part of the concern here that we all need to be concerned about as americans, none of our systems are safe. we don't know that the russians haven't gotten into the rnc system, but it does seem a little peculiar that only democratic e-mails have been released at a time designed to do the most damage to the democratic party. >> the clinton camp is a little concerned because they're warning there will be more wikileaks. they're going to release more on the u.s. elections. that's frightening stuff. that could hurt not just democrats but republicans as well. >> exactly. i think that the political use of this incidence is really

misplaced. republicans and democrats should get together and support each other in trying to find out how this happened, who did it, why it was done. look, there are plenty of reasons why vladimir putin would want donald trump to be president. there's this bromance going on, the historical salute to each other, there's the fact that the russians invaded the ukraine and putin doesn't want any push back. the russians have a well-known pattern of trying to intervene and subvert elections in neighboring states. so everything would point to a political motivation, but we have to be careful here because this is a serious charge and there is no evidence at this point to support a targeted operation for political purpose. >> well said. judy miller joining us live. thank you so much for sticking around with us. >> my pleasure. well, the time now is about ten minutes until the top of the hour. what do democrats really think
