no teleprompter. i didn't see any notes. maybe a couple of sheets of paper there, but nothing much. that is miss first speech as the general election campaign officially kicks off. thanks for joining us. "the five" is next. hello, everyone. i'm kimberly giuilfoyle. you've been listening it to donald trump at a rally on the day after his opponent send her nomination. last night hillary set the stage for what will surely be a fierce fight against trump. duringler will wig moment at the convention last night, clinton cast herself as a steady leader and pushed for national unity. >> none of us can raise a family, build a business, heal a community or lift a country totally alone. america needs every one us to
2:01 pm
lend our energy, our talentses our ambitions to making our nation better and stronger. i believe that with all my heart. that is why stronger together is not just a lesson from our history, it's not just a slogan for our campaign, it's a guiding principle for the country we have always been and the future we're going to build. >> but last night wasn't just a victory lap for clinton. she also went on the attack against her opponent donald trump. >> don't believe anyone who says i alone can fix it. americans don't say i alone can fix it. we say we'll fix it together. he also talked a big game about putting america first. well, please explain what part of america first leads him to

make trump ties in china, not colorado, trump suits in mexico, not michigan, trump furniture in turkey, not ohio, trump picture frames in india, not wisconsin. donald trump says he wants to make america great again. well, he could start by actually making things in america again. a man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons. >> portraying herself as the steady leader indeed and trying to portray donald trump as reckless and someone who really isn't make america great again because his sofas are not made here. what did you make of this historic occasion last night with the first female nominee is this. >> well, she was certainly well set up because of the speeches that came before monday, tuesday, wednesday. and then an emotional night obviously for the clintons with
2:03 pm
their daughter introducing her. obviously these two speeches, chelsea's and heavily clinton's being heavily compared to the week's before and also the early ones in the week. they're not the best or are a tors in the world, but an important moment for them.are a tors in the world, but an important moment for them. if you just read the speech and not listened to it, you would have said pretty good. but you could give -- she could give the best written speech of her life and it would still feel a little flat to people. but i think that she had a very good convention and she now will hit the campaign trail with tim kaine for three days and they will be on fox news sunday doing an interview with chris wallace. so i think we'll find out what their plans are. because that was certainly a very different hillary clinton messaging last night than we saw during the primary season. she is definitely trying to figure out a way it broaden out her appeal, but not the go too far to the center that she loses
2:04 pm
the bernie bros that are mad at her. >> they did put out the ad bernie fever, but what did you think of the speech, delivery and content? >> it annoys me the cadence. i'm glad you said that. first part of the speech was great, but she holds on to that -- it's just annoying to me. maybe i'm just being picky. however the sound bite that you played, it struck me while i'm sitting here, she said why is it that donald trump's ties are made in mexico, suits are mama t in murky and sofas made whatever, and items because of our stupid tax code.mama in murky and sofas made whatever, and items because of our stupid tax code. and minimum wage. these are two big democrat policies that republicans vehemently disagree with. we have the highest corporate tax rate in the free world, in the developed world. number one. number two, the minimum wage drives manufacturing jobs overseas, period. if you have to pay someone $10 or $12 an hour like they're
2:05 pm
proposing, all those lower wage manufacturing jobs will go right it places where they don't have that minimum wage. so take that and run with it and say they're's why my ties are made in mexico, because it's cheaper. i'm a businessman. and as president, i'll fix this problem so that we can bring manufacturing back. >> jobs back here. that's what you have to do to be able to counter the argument. greg, you were mentioning that you thought that this was a good point for her to bring up, but you had an issue with the delivery of it for maximum impact. >> it's hard for donald to talk about minimum wage because he's for raising it. so it's like depends on the day. keeps changing his mind. i had a problem with the entire evening. it felt so cleved. like in the beginning when i saw the relatives of the slain officer, i thought it was very powerful. mr. and mrs. kahn were amazing, probably the most powerful moment i've seen. general allen kicked major butt. i felt that that prtparty was
2:06 pm
talking to me. there was a horl objective, there was platform that i could embrace. i'm a conservative and i was watching the rnc that i wanted to see. this was incredible to me. they were defending the military, the police, the parents of a dead soldier were up there talking about how great it is to be an american. and then katy perry. and then it just totally -- it deflated this balloon. i sat the there and i go this is so amazing. and you had katy perry who is this empty as a school in summer and followed it up with chelsea and hillary. the speeches were fine, but the robot doesn't fall far from the tree. but i want to talk about content. the content of those other speeches were so incredible, but then it was contrasted with the progressive policy that then followed that i don't like.
2:07 pm
and so i sat there going, my god, they almost -- they were talking to me, they almost had me, but then they let me go. >> yes, they talked about it. and you're right, there were compelling arguments being made about the military, about law enforcement, but don't forget while they were making the arguments, the crowd was chanting no more wars and law enforceme enforcement chanting black lives matter. >> during the moment of silences you heard somebody yell "black lives matter." you can't control everybody, but there was offensive. but those people on stage were great, but hillary cannot bring them on stage during the debate. she cannot have general allen, obama, bill clinton. she will be alone against donald. and when you look at the her speech, you realize she may not have a chance. she may not have a chance against donald without those people behind her. >> supporting cast and characters. i want to -- stayed up late watching juan williams and take
2:08 pm
a listen. clinton outlining her progressive policy agenda. >> i believe that when we have millions of hard working immigrants contributing to our economy, it would be self defeating and inhumane to try to kick them out. bernie sanders and i will work together to make college tuition free for the middle class and debt-free for all. i'm not here to repeal the second amendment. i'm not here to take away your guns. i just don't want you to be so the by someone who shouldn't have a gun in the first place. >> okay. juan, powerful moments for you outlining the progressive agenda? >> to respond to what greg is saying, the debates will be the next major event in this campaign. i don't think there is any question that after that speech, after that convention, she's going to get a bump. we saw donald trump get a bump
2:09 pm
anywhere from 3 to 6 points which is about a margin for typical historically for republicans. democrats do a little better typically on the bump and i thought they had such a smooth convention that i think they unified the base and were able to appeal to the independent voters and specifically some of those white women, not so much white men, that they have been after. so when greg talks about the debate, i think to myself hey, last night, she had the perfect answer. she said she sweats the details. details about your families, about your kid, about the cost of your prescriptions. she said i'm right there with you. >> she can't react to donald that way. >> of course she can. >> he's sugar ray leonard and she's as stiff as an ironing board. >> in a debate if i have the facts and you just show up, you aren't going to look great even if you are sugar ray. and i think that will make -- you can shout at her and call hr name, but he really doesn't know what is at stake. and when he says he knows more
2:10 pm
than the generals or he watches here at fox that's how he gets his information about the military, that will look laughable. so overall, i would say this. when she talks about a plan that calls for more spending to create more jobs, when she talks about paid family leave, when she talks about subsidizing public college education, guess what, i think she saying i have a plan and that other guy, 70 odd minutes, really odd minute, i would -- >> very little humor. >> but i think she was simple, clear, pragmatic and presidential. >> we get it, you liked it. >> one thing you said that is true, she's not an effervescent speaker. but she's practical. >> she got big applause. >> of course she did. she laid out the progressive policy. she checked the boxes which i worried about and i warned against last night because here's what she did.
2:11 pm
she did a campaign event last night. last night was the moment to say i'm the first woman nominee of a major party in american presidential elections. embrace it. own it. >> if she had done that, would you have been saying that she can't play the gender card. >> no, 100% honest, i wassism pressed by that moment. and then she went into the progressive policy stuff and i was like you lost me. >> then she said we will follow the money. >> i love the part about her mom. i love the fact that chelsea -- >> that was good. >> that was great. and i think because what dana said is so true. if she had stayed on that point, she hammered home that she was a woman, you would have said that's all she is running on. >> maybe not eric, but the criticism would have been that she's only running on being a woman. >> that is my criticism. >> i have to blame someone. >> blame me. i've been saying that all the
2:12 pm
time. but i think trump has changed both parties. he hasn't just changed the republican party. at some point the democrats decided to go if patriotism. >> they're chanting usa. >> democrats went for patriotism. who would have seen that coming? >> okay. coming up next, donald trump firing back right now at attacks from hillary clinton and others at the dnc. also ahead, a look back at some of the best moments from our road trip to the conventions. don't go away. many people clean their dentures with toothpaste or plain water. and even though their dentures look clean, in reality they're not. if a denture were to be put under a microscope, we can see all the bacteria that still exists on the denture, and that bacteria multiplies very rapidly. that's why dentists recommend cleaning with polident everyday. polident's unique micro clean formula works in just 3 minutes, killing 99.99% of odor causing bacteria.

policy wonk. >> why is it that she can keep changing her accent and the way she speaks depending on where she is around the country but she can't alter this? when she's down south, suddenly she's different. >> because that's who she is. but i just think that when she's talked about donald trump in that speech, i thought it was really something that sort of, you know, nicked the shield because she said that the example she used about the one about the cuban missile crisis where they talked about a big man with control and restraint, but their little men who react out of fear and pride, and i think that is donald trump. and then when she talked about, well, wait a second, donald trump, he doesn't pay his bills. you working people, you think you can build a business? what happens when he doesn't pay the bills. leaves you hanging. and then she finally said everybody in the republican side was waiting. didn't take donald seriously.
