clinton should be president. >> so i went to both conventions and i'm going to break down them for you right now. beginning with the democratic convention in philadelphia. so the big theme in philly was reactive. i'm not donald trump. it wasn't a positive message as to what the democrats were for but what the democrats were not. they trotted out a lot of victims, minority who is had been hurt by the system. transgendered people. gay people. victims of police brutality. i don't know if that's going to stick but that's what they did. the main idea is love over hate. we're lovers. donald trump's a hater. go with love. i don't think the country's feeling that right now. we're in some tough times and i think we need to a little more grittiness. they're trying to say we're a unity party. we're not the party of division. but after the last eight years when the president's been dividing people by race and class and gender, i don't know

if that really rings true. now for the news cycle. that week to tip it off debbie wasserman schultz resigned. the chairwoman of the dnc. because of these leaked e-mails that were very, very embarrassing. as a matter of fact, i was told by a top source that debbie wasserman schultz took so long to leave because she was negotiating a private jet home from the convention. they didn't want to give it to her and she was insisting she get it. also, a ton of bernie drama. we know what happened. bernie supporters came to philly already angry and after the leaks of rigging the system against him, they were ready for battle. and bernie didn't really give them much to battle for. he kind of folded bah then donald trump makes a joke and everybody piles on. he says something about wanting russia to help with the e-mails and get these 30,000 that were deleted. everybody knew he was joking but the media piled on and then he dominated the second half of the week. the real story, though, the

media buried the protesters. nothing was covered out there except for fox news. now, the speakers, like i said before, a lot of victims, sad stories and crying. not a lot of excitement out there. the celebrities, they weren't really there like they were for obama. i was more b-list, well, republicans were more c-list but for democratic perspective, there weren't a lot of star power out there. they had politicians and they had big ones. but i don't know if the country's really into politicians anymore. they have gotten us into a little bit of a mess. obama's speech was great. i have to give him that. he fired up the crowd. but of course, it was all about obama. i think he said "i" 1,000 times. biden was sharp, feisty, very partisan. the crowd loved it. elizabeth warren, again, very, very feisty. the crowd ate it up. red meat there. and bloomberg really, really went hard after donald trump. i was very surprised and very partisan and not touting the

good record for 7 1/2 years because it's not a good record. and there was no mentions of isis or illegal immigration almost at all until the very end. and then finally, the keynote, i guess the most important thing was that hillary clinton, the first woman out there, receiving the nomination for president. and from a historical perspective, that was amazing and i think very moving for a lot of people. her speech was okay. it had some witty lines and i think she failed to define herself. she was saying what she wasn't instead of what she was. so, bringing in some of our guests here to tell me where i'm going wrong and right, we have republican strategist noel negapore and democratic analyst and contributor julie raginski. we were there in philadelphia. >> i have to stop you. meryl streep is not a-list?

>> i think she is yesterday. the a-listers was for bernie. was it exciting? >> the speech is middling. didn't light me on fire. the two, the three moments of the convention i thought was incredible. joe biden's speech. >> strong speech. >> two is michael bloomberg. nothing bothered donald trump more than being told he is a con artist by a real billionaire. >> he is not a real billionaire? >> that was michael bloomberg. i thought the father of the slain soldier, the muslim slain soldier, took out the constitution and said you've sacrificed nothing to donald trump was an incredibly powerful moment. >> that was powerful. i'll give you that. on the ground, it was a sad day there. >> you know what? what i took away as a republican strategist is the fact that granted that hillary clinton made history. you know? you cannot take that away from her. michelle obama, great speech.

joe biden, great speech. obama, great speech and reinforced their brands and it really didn't do anything to promote hillary clinton. like they wanted it to. >> hillary does not deliver the excitement. people were doing forced applause. i saw it happening. people stand in front of the stage and whoop people up. >> yeah. >> manufactured applause. >> they're whips. welcome back. i'm jess see watters. i reviewed the dnc. now time for the rnc if i can remember a week ago. the theme of the rnc is real change. everybody knows that a donald trump presidency would actually bring real change. and i mean, big time. the speech was mostly focused on law and order. he hammered that very, very hard. it was also compassionate. he reached out to gay americans. he even reached out to black and hispanics. mostly through an economic populist message. this is a real movement and you could see that in the speech and

i think it was very effective. the news cycle unfortunately was dominated by the melania scandal at the top. a big unforced error and very, very sad situation and then things started to rebound and the ted cruz situation where a little floor fight and didn't really endorse helped donald trump. and ended up unifying the party i think. but the main theme was the trump family. i believe the trump family speeches really built into a crescendo and set donald trump up very well for thursday. and he should be very, very proud of his beautiful family. trump's keynote was big, reaching out. and again, the theme was america first. this country's really let everybody else take control. we have been leading from behind. the border is a civ. we don't win on trade. that was the theme. it's about making this country safe but also making this country rich. and he's going to do that by strengthening border security, strengthening our international security and then massive tax

cuts, bringing money back into the country, reinvesting through the government and letting people keep and spend more of their own hard-earned money. now, bringing in my guests, the co-host of "after the bell" melissa francis and political commentator evangaline gomez. do you think that's effective? people say that launched donald trump and you can see that in the polls into a different stratosphere. >> it depends on what you care about. i care about security and the economy. main issues that affect my life and my family every day. i care about the fact that law and order seems to be out the window and concerns me. i see it in my own neighborhood. you see it all over the country and i'm afraid for the safety of my family and children. >> i think issues that people care about with priorities is priority and safety.

terrorism. trade. those were issues that were really hit home at the rnc where at the dnc. they talked about transgender rights and feel-good things and the police brutality. i don't think terms in kitchen table issues those things were overlooked at the dnc. >> i think they spoke about the issues. minimum wage, increasing to $15 an hour. there was also talk about safety here in the united states. there was a moment of silence for fallen police officers. >> and people turned their backs in the moment of violence. >> i didn't turn my back and i didn't see anybody turn their backs. >> you are a patriot and why you're on the show. >> we heard about the plight of family members who had sons who had husbands, who had died. and these people were protecting us and making us safe. so i think that there was a lot going on at the dnc. i think we also spoke about -- we heard about isis and the plan

♪ back now with the co-host of "after the bell" melissa francis. strategist noelle, fox news reporter carly shimkis, jessica tarlov. so let's look at some of the polling after both conventions. right now, we have trump ahead of hillary clinton in the latest "la times" tracking poll by 7 points, pretty big.

trump ahead of clinton in the cnn poll, 48% to 45%. and in the reuters poll, just basically up 1, dead-even race. so we all know that the polls are going to now narrow after the dnc and it's going to look like a tight race. as a matter of fact, in the battleground states it's very, very tight. >> margin of error. >> in the battleground states. how big of a bump do you think hillary gets after the dnc? such a bump to start leading? >> i think she'll go back to leading by 3 to 4 points so the real clear politics average he is up by 3 or 4 on her. i think it was a successful convention but so was the rnc. what was really fascinating, you talked about this earl year, the media panning the speech so dark. i felt it was pretty dark, too. the cnn instant poll, 56% of those who watched it had a positive feeling about it and said they were more likely to vote for him so i think that bump is something that's solid

calling, i think he stands a good chance of winning the election. >> you see him being more presidential? >> he has to be more presidential. >> people saying that for many, many ponts. >> he does a smart job of dividing which form to be which person. in the day he does all the name calling, the normal trump stuff. dominates the news cycle. he really crushed hillary clinton's news cycle and the number of different points in the dnc and got them very much off message. i think he does that during the day and then getting out there and gives a speech he goes back to the presidential self. i think he has the marketing down right now staying disciplined and the debates like you said are the deciding factor going forward. seeing them on the stage together, she plays it safe and doesn't say anything and he maybe hurts himself. >> she'll say a lot and going to be -- >> she hasn't ever said anything. >> she talked last night for 57 minutes. i heard a lot. >> smiled a lot and tried to convince people -- >> that's better than frowning and in terms of donald trump

that's what i meant by those race baiting democrats. they're using whatever tool to their disposal to simply win votes and try to elect their candidate hillary to the white house. it's a shim. >> does your congregation agree with you? do they see that the democratic party uses race to divide and conquer politically, or do they just kind of go along and go to the polls like everybody else? >> i don't engage where i met from my pulpit but my members know that i'm supporting donald trump and as a private citizen, you know, i think many of them understand exactly, they see that democrats have been using blacks for over 50, 60 years, you know. using their emotions and their fears and building off of the civil rights movement, constantly pounding to the ears of minorities that you're less, you're not equal and we're the party that's going to continue to fight for you.

when in reality blacks have been voting democrats for over 50 years and in a lot of ways we're worse off than we were during the civil rights movement to a degree. we're more racially divided than we have ever been and the dnc and why i said why would anybody vote for a person like hillary clinton who has been in politics for over 30 years and yet we're in the shape we're in? >> right. >> we need something new. >> right. if you look at the facts, a lot of the black statistics under this president, first black president, great historical situation there, but everything's gone down from wages to home ownership, food stamps are up. i don't know if people see that. but you said one thing. besides that what trump wants to do, he wants to allow pastors to be able to preach politically from the pulpit. besides that, what are the main issues that you want to see donald trump address as

president? >> well, you know, the two major issues that are plaguing our country and it really transcend race, number one, is jobs. because poverty knows no color. poverty don't care what color you are or whether you're black, white, hispanic. we need economic revival to take place in our country, especially in some of our minority communities in this country. number two, we need strong security. i mean, taking place in europe, they're knocking at the door of america. hillary clinton said that's donald trump playing to the fears of america and we shouldn't be afraid. we're not afraid. because we're america. we're not afraid. we're the baddest country in the world. we're the strongest country in the world. who do we fear? we don't fear nobody. but at the same time, we're not ignorant or naive to believe because we're the big dog in the room that the little dogs want to try to take us out and only
