not be flying free. and wait till you see what prison has done to rod blagojevich's hair. shepard smith reporting live from the news desk. today, donald trump hit back at 50 republican heavyweights who warns he would be the most reckless president in history. this group of 50 signed a letter for this own party's nominee calling him unfit for the oval office. >> they would have loved to have been involved with the campaign. but i wasn't using that. look where the country is. national policy. look at the mess we're being in. >> they would have loved being part of the campaign, really? i'll talk with one, and ask him the question did you want to be

part of the campaign. we'll also have more reaction from camp trump. the letter came after a senator piled on becoming one of the highest senators in congress to disown donald trump. the senator of maine wrote an op-ed saying, quote, trump's unsuitability for office is based on his disregard on the preseptember of treating others with respect. an idea that should transcend politics. and analysis of federal filings show more people gave to republicans other than trump in the primary are now donating to hillary clinton. rather than coming around to donald trump. for her part, hillary clinton is continuing her stumping in florida. one of the important swing states elected by the presidential race. recent polling shows hillary clinton is surging not just in battle ground states but in
12:03 pm
states that have long been reliably republican. according to the polls, clinton has a two-point lead over trump in georgia. and she trails trump by one point in arizona. when you factor in the latest polls in swing states, statistician 538 has clinton's chance of winning the white house at more than 87%. politics, and cole cameron starts things out in north carolina this afternoon where trump is holding a rally later. hey, more republicans are going on the record against trump now, right? >> reporter: right. and he has recognized this problem and generally speaking fired back at all of them and the case of susan collins is no exception. susan collins today in an op-ed, in an interview, said she could not support donald trump and does not feel he meets the seatability test for the presidency. and she described a number of
12:04 pm
second, third and fourth chances she'd try to give the republican nominee and said she cannot. you suggested georgia and that poll, the peach state that actually goes towards democrats that say remarkable turn of events but it comes on a day where the polls sort of split the difference on three of the most important states. the quinnipiac poll came out a short while ago, in florida, pennsylvania and very close. clinton has a significant lead in pennsylvania by ten points. ohio and florida, the swing battleground are virtually tied. a point or two difference in one particular case. here in north carolina, not a recent polling but it's also a process, is this a state that trump absolutely has to win. it's a red state won by mitt romney in 2012. ohio, florida, not so much. and in this particular case, north carolina, the state that trump is campaigning hard in

today and will be back. he's going to go to florida. he's going to go to pennsylvania just in the next few days. and the idea that another southern state like florida could be on the block. and hillary clinton inching into a statistical lead remarkable. and time get to work not only with these battleground states but at least half a dozen others where organization is going to matter. she started this 90 days from that point, and the hillary clinton organization is largely broader and demonstrative than donald trump's. super tuesdays and things like that where there's multiple states all at once but not the entire country all at once, shep. >> you mentioned ground games. when we were at the convention, a lot of insiders told us there's not much of a ground game and thought it would hurt what's your observation on the ground game? >> reporter: yeah trying, trump
12:06 pm
in his speeches, always talks about how important it is to vote. earlier today, he was talking about voters i.d. and suggesting that the voter i.d. law in north carolina might require federal courts to come in and keep it in place. because there's attempts to lift some the voter i.d. requirements in this state. trump said i'm not telling you to vote 15 times today. a reference to his own audience and essentially what he is -- all but saying hillary clinton and democrats do which is encourage voter fraud. he's aware of how steep the hill is, he's aware he's behind the curve and has a great deal of work to do. digitally, very important, trump the dominant figure in social media. one wonders with all of his followers that they're getting pounded with the kind of e-mails that the hillary clinton sends out. trump is now at it.
12:07 pm
hasn't hired any people until a couple of months ago to put on the ground the kind of modern case that you can win. >> when's the rally? >> reporter: tonight is the evening rally here in fayetteville. hot day. big rally. >> all right, carl, thanks. we'll talk to one of the 50 former republican national security officials who signed that alert calling donald trump dangerous. saying that this group, none of them will vote for them. roger zackheim is the former secretary of defense under president george w. bush. nice to see you. why did you sign that? >> well, we could not in good conscience stay silent as donald trump to be next commander in chief. >> when did you decide he was unqualified? >> oh, well back. i consistently talked to al

against trump. i signed a letter but it's certainly creche sescendoed in past couple of weeks. typical trump. >> why are you turning on your own party? >> well i think donald trump turned on the republican party, that's what's happened here. longstanding, national security policies, behavior that we'd expect from any commander in chief, any president, donald trump has essentially jettisoned, thrown it away. >> in discussions regarding national security, it was widely reported that the discussion of nuclear weapons came up saying we have them, why can't we use them? >> well that's a great point of why lack of temperament makes him unqualified for the job. he does not understand and doesn't have respect for men and women in you'll. and he's somebody quite frankly at the center. >> if you're not for donald
12:09 pm
trump you must be hillary clinton? >> that is not the case either. is this a case between bad and worse. >> who are you going to vote for? >> we'll see if someone emerges. we'll evaluate that. somebody that understands the country. >> hillary clinton doesn't understand service to country? >> well, hillary clinton is unqualified to be president for other reasons. >> like what? >> well, i think her policy, fundamentally more of what you see from barack obama. >> like which ones do you have a problem with? >> well, specifically the approaches with national defense. the iran deal. asia, treatment of russia reset policy and of course, benghazi, all of that comes together to make her a weak compaermander. >> what about benghazi? >> well, she was in the state department. a contributing factor that disqualifies her as well.
12:10 pm
>> so being in state department when benghazi happens she's disqualified? >> oh, no, she showed what happened. >> was there a group that came together to draft the letter? how did the letter come about? >> well, i think there's a community of professionals who obviously stay in touch. sure, the person who organized that letter is a member -- don bellinger is a former senior official of the previous add administration. >> and are there others who wanted to sign on but wheere afraid to for some reason? >> i'm not aware of that. >> so everybody in the national foreign policy area, within the national defense area, you worked for george w. bush? >> that's right. >> and how did that go? >> i was in the tail end of the administration. it was 2008.
12:11 pm
prior to my service in that administration went well. i spent the past eight years cutting my teeth in the congress countering barack obama's national security policy. >> and you're a republican? >> i am a republican. >> what republican would have been a good president? >> i think there were about 16 others. >> everybody on the list except donald trump and who else? >> well, i think donald trump is the one that clearly stands apart from all the other candidates. >> and particularly, what stands apart from donald trump is? >> judgment, temperament, experience to be president of the united states and commander in chief. >> would you be comfortable if he's elected? >> i would be uncomfortable. we bear that out explicitly. donald trump in the next commander in chief of this country. >> for those who are big trump supporters and are mad at you right now, i think they want to know specifically what it is you think he would do that would put us all in danger?
12:12 pm
>> well, i think on a policy level, the embrace of russia, not recognizing the serious threat russia poses to the united states. >> is he in bed with russia? >> i don't know if that's a term i would use. but he clearly does not recognize from ever other professional, it is a major risk, that is russia's role in the world. challenging the united states and all free democracies in office. >> trump said if he were in office vladimir putin would not have taken crimea? >> he says a lot of things. >> is it your sense he realize the gravity of that? and if he's elected president that he'll surround himself with people -- >> i hope and pray if he's president he has good advisers. you just mentioned ukraine and russia, he had an interview earlier in the week where he wasn't sure if russia actually
12:13 pm
invaded crimea. >> that's what it seemed but he later came back and clarified. >> he's constantly clarifying things he said. you have to judge a man by the things he says and the things he says makes him unqualified. >> where were you? >> i can't speak for the other 49 folks. i was out there engaging in the campaign. supportive of marco rubio, doing my part for the republican party. >> roger zakheim, former secretary of defense for george w. bush, thank you for coming. >> thank you for the opportunity. >> we wanted a trump representative to come in and give a counter to this, you know, give us your positions on this matter. tell us why these 50 people are wrong. because that's the fair way to do this so we called them up. they had somebody on another matter but they didn't have them on this. so, we're going to let you know

denouncing it. we invited somebody to come in to speak to it but they told us nobody could do it at this hour. they actually offered a congressman to speak on a different topic, economics but that's not what we're talking about. we're guessing they wanted us to talk about economics, we didn't want to talk about that. we wanted somebody to talk about this matter. that said, donald trump did respond earlier today, here's his conversation with maria bartiromo on the fox business network. >> i haven't spoken for any of these people, i'd like to speak to the new group. the old group was not doing it. take a look at the penalties and the problems we've had. and the last people i want to use are the people that have been doing it for the last long period of time. you know, they don't feel relevant because of that, they form a group and try to get some publicity for themselves. they hope that somebody other than trump wins because that way they can get a job.
12:18 pm
>> on twitter, trump called them part of the establishment. he tweeted i am running against the washington insiders just like i did in the republican primaries. these are the people that made u.s. a mess. and "wall street journal's" john bussey has been watching donald trump and he said this, i said earlier, this is a big deal. this is a big deal. >> yeah, it is. 50 national security experts. and these weren't people jockeying for a role in the trump administration. maybe two or through of them may have been. but these are people that stretch back to the nixon administration, that served republican presidents after richard nixon. 50 of them, big names, have signed it. i can't think of a time where something like this happened in a national election. maybe somebody else can. >> trump says it's their fault. he didn't talk to them and
12:19 pm
doesn't want their support because it's their fault we're in a heap -- this mess. >> yeah, he had a pretty sparky response to this saying i'm glad they stepped forward because these are the people to blame. richard nixon and george bush, the first bush administration, i don't think that they necessarily have a role that's going on now. michael hayden former head of the cia and nsa. tom ridge former head of republican homeland security. >> tom ridge. he had the wrap your house in plastic. >> former head of the world bank. there's a lot of big names on this letter. and the language of the letter, was really rather sharp. talking about he would be the most reckless president in american history. that he's dangerous. there's overriding ego. ignorance, unwillingness to educate himself about the issues. this is a very bad performance review for a president -- you
12:20 pm
know, somebody who's running for president. >> and trump's response is that, look, i don't need to look at these people. look at the mess we're in. doesn't that make sense to you on some level that that's how he would respond? >> well, yeah. and you could argue that the sparkiness is kind of classic donald trump and that might appeal to his face. but you've got to realize these are not mandarin up on a hill some place, ethereal cloud handing it down. these are people in a political base who have served in position. and they are going to be reflecting a larger consensus, beyond this very large number of 50. that's not a good thing. that's another headwind. i think along with the susan collins and the commentators like george will who have come
12:21 pm
out against donald trump. the thinkers, "wall street journal" coming out against donald trump. >> well, "wall street journal," that liberal rag that it is. >> i get the point, we have a conservative editorial page. i think that the trump campaign is going to respond the way you saw the response today because that appeals his sort of visceral content of the campaign. but the policies of it are getting tougher for donald trump. >> call for a race for the white house, swing state, have you seen this, pennsylvania, clinton is winning by 10 points, ohio, clinton is winning by 4 points, florida, clinton is winning by 12 points. if she wins those, she's the president. >> you do have real interesting anomalies beginning to emerge. like georgia. that's the first time in decades that's possibly going blue. but 90 day could be a very long

ryan on friday night but the speaker was fought even there to hear it. in janesville, wisconsin. what's the relationship like between donald trump and ryan? >> reporter: well, it's not particularly cozy. trump ultimately endorsed paul ryan but he made it clear that his arm was being twisted. paul nehlen said he only endorsed party unity but not because he supports paul ryan. >> what donald trump was doing is bringing party unity. he does not endorse paul ryan's open borders, sending our jobs overseas with tpp. >> reporter: now, ryan for his part says he reserves the right to withdrawal his endorsement of anyone, including the republican nominee. >> so, how's it looking for
12:27 pm
ryan? >> reporter: well, it's looking pretty good for paul ryan, actually, if you look at all of the stats and the way they're piling up. among wisconsin conservatives, particularly those people who supported scott walker and kept him from being recalled, paul ryan is terribly popular. he's been on the air quite a bit because he outraised his opponent to the tune of 17 to 1 in terms of dollars. nehlen's people got a shot in the arm because of all of this attention generated by trump. got to keep in mind, trump couldn't put himself over the top here in wisconsin. he lost to ted cruz in the southern part of the state, where the 1st congressional district is located. he lost by 18 points. shep. hillary clinton urging lawmakers to take action against zika as health officials say more than a dozen people in a miami neighborhood got the virus, we just got an ap flash alert out of the state of florida and athere's good news
