beautiful. >> really, really beautiful. >> that does it for us for now. we will see you in one hour. stay with us, get some coffee and come on back. we will see you in an hour. >> on the "media buzz" donald trump accuses "new york times" of publishing "fiction," as the media announced rhetoric, and the comments on hillary clinton, judges and a second amendment. the latest firestorm from what he called "the dishonest press." >> donald trump spoke off the cuff and took the campaign off the rails. again. >> did donald trump cross the line? >> at home with donald trump and a potential new controversy simmering after a remark that, at best was a joke and at worst, an implied threat of violence. >> let me say this to my republican party: you are letting donald trump destroy the party. you have done it from the beginning. >> he is operating in an environment, now, where
2:01 pm
mrs. clinton, the left of the media is going to twist every single thing he says. he has to be more precise with his language. >> imagine in she said or somebody said that about donald trump, carelessly, maybe someone would assassinate them, we would be going crazy. >> do you not say stuff like that. it is not the press or democrats it is self self inflicted wound. >> should trump accuse "new york times" of itch venting "unnamed sources," in reporting his campaign is failing or are the mainstream media filing on? the columnist said the reporting is unbalanced because he is viewed boy terribly dangerous. really? new e-mails shows favor seeking between the state department of hillary clinton and the clinton foundation but is that drowned out by the uproar by trump?

nbc and other outlets under fire for belittling coverage or sexist coverage of female athletes at the olympics. we have a scorecard. this is "media buzz" today. >> trump's campaign was already awash in negativity when the spotlight switches to the republicans bailing on his campaign. about only line, do you think he was, it would be dangerous if he was president? >> donald trump, in my judgment, would make a perilous world, even more dangerous. >> you called donald trump a clear and present danger? >> if he is anywhere close to the language he used in the campaign, i fear for our future. >> that was wiped east radar when he went to north carolina

rally and made this attack. >> hillary clinton wants to abolish essentially, abolish the second amendment. by the way if she gets to pick her judges, nothing can you do, folks. although the second amendment people, maybe there is, i don't know. i will tell you what, that will be a horrible day. >> donald trump riled up the press by calling hillary clinton a founder of isis and last night he said this. all the "new york times", okay? >> boo. >> love it. they wrote a story today anonymous sources have said, three anonymous sources, anonymous this, anonymous that...they don't use names. i don't really thing they have any names. okay? >> joining us to analyze the campaign coverage is heidi przybyla senior correspondent from "usa today" and lisa
2:04 pm
boothe, contributor to the washington examiner and kirsten powers with "usa today". heidi przybyla, "new york times" and said he is crudely effective political showman but he is not a realliable president. your take? >> obviously a story not just reported overnight, and it wasn't just for aanonymous sources over the course of how long they have been reporting but it is an evolution of the trump advisors trying to get him to do things he did not do during the primary campaign. that said it comes in the midst of what is a media pile on. donald trump took this one story and is reacting to it in a very emotional way and going after "new york times" but the truth of the matter is, to report a story like this you have to use
2:05 pm
anonymous sources the people in the campaign and worried about direction of the campaign are not going to tell you that on the record. that is the only way a story like this is reported so deeper in the body of the story, "new york times" mentioned they had talked to 20 people. >> in fairness to the "new york times" there were three trump advisors including giuliani quoted and the campaign director, but donald trump is saying this is jason blair dirt and making stuff up opposed to saying it is not true. >> "new york times" as most of the media have discredited themselves. republicans who is worked in the campaigns, there is bias through a large period of time with newspapers and other publications but we have seen they have been transparent in the bias. this is reason that 20% of americans have confidence in newspapers because of this. they saying that people that are close to the campaign or have a communication with the campaign, that could be anyone. who are these "unnamed sources,"
2:06 pm
and the "new york times" has discredited themselves, the election cycle running a story about women and donald trump and one of the interviewees stepped forward and said that her words were taken out of context and it was not true. she was misled by the reporter. you look that "new york times" ran 1,300 page article on his second amendment comments that did nothing about a terrorist father attending or endorsing hillary clinton. >> we will get that in a minute. they have shown their bias. >> a donald trump campaign insider said this is a case of people at least close to trump, not in the campaign itself, who are distancing themself from what they fear will be a loss in november. the fact that this is take place, and we do not know who the leaks are, what does it tell you about the relationship between the campaign and media? >> obviously, the people in the campaign are panicking. we know this from other reporting but the idea of "new york times" being so bias, look, they are not perfect newspaper.
2:07 pm
but i would not put his second amendment comments on the same level as a person showing up at hillary clinton rally, somebody who she basically said she did not want his support it is not the same thing. >> we will have more on that. >> i have known maggie for 15 years and covered campaigns i would bed, and she a first-rate reporter and the idea that she is making up sources here is beyond preposterous and the "new york times" i know has a very rigorous process. they do not get to make up sources or get to say somebody said something. that is not the way it works. >> it could be people on the lower tier who have never sat in a room with donald trump. >> a good reporter is not going to take an intern --. >> maybe the --. >> i don't think --. that is character assassination against a great reporter. >> the story said that four of the sources had details knowledge of meetings that seem to be closely held.
2:08 pm
donald trump said he could pull the yes degrees of the "new york times" and he told me that two months ago but it is his hometown paper and although he is disgusted with him he has a special place for it. what consumed a last media oxygen this week, obviously, the second amendment comments. you have all seen and heard but here is an interview that donald trump did where he was pressed on nature of the comments. take a listen. >> last night you said the president was the founder of isis, you meant that he created the vacuum and --. >> no, i meant he is the founder. he is the most valuable player. i give him the most valuable player award and her, too. >> but he hates them and is trying to --. >> he was the founder. >> this is the falling into the category of political license, does anyone believe he is literally saying that hillary clinton and president obama founded isis, but, cnn put up a banner that actually basically called donald trump ally arrest
2:09 pm
saying he is not meaning obama isn't the founder of isis much what do you make of this? >> this is part of a broader change we have had to make in this campaign about covering donald trump which is that a lot of the statements that he said that are not sarcasm because he said it is sarcasm are incorrect. so the news organizations have taken to fact checking and he came back and said, that was sarcastic but three said it on so many occasions we asker as the media have to report that what he is saying it is legal really when he said it is literal in several issues as he did. >> this is the tweet where drum trump said i called president obama and hillary clinton the founder of isis and they do not get sarcasm? but then, at a rally after that he said i am being sarcastic but not that sarcastic. what does the media make of this sarcasm? >> but cnn does not do the fact
2:10 pm
checking element when hillary clinton rarely does interview, although we know that hick has systematically lied to the american people for a year and a half throughout the f.b.i. investigation so that is the problem. further, there was a level of hyperbole to his statement but the crumb of what he is saying is that president obama last a vacuum for isis something that has been reiterateed by someone like panetta who said on record that president obama leaving iraq left the vacuum for isis. >> that is a fair --. >> by his own defense second. that is a fair charge, it gave him the opportunity to say, no, no, i am saying the founder of isis. >> i can see that. >> but he said it seven times so why did he not just say that, why not in other times just explain that? it is not what he did. and he said it was sarcasm? the people who want him to clean up the mess are say that is what
2:11 pm
he meant but he is not saying that. all the real donald trump account, on twitter, a disgusting and corrupt media covered me honestly and no false meaning in the words i say i would be beating hillary clinton by 20%. >> yes. i sat on this set and said i thought the media was hard on donald trump. many months ago. i cannot say there is a day and say anyone is being hard on him in this situation. >> hard or saying it is unjustified? >> unfairly hard. maybe they were going overboard but when he said what he is trying to say and saying then it is sarcasm it is a realm that is getting crazy. all the point, and it is missing, the media should be able to cover what donald trump said and i said before he overstates things, and i don't completely --. >> he creates some of his own problems. >> i have conceded that. the problem is the media should be adept enough to cover that while simultaneously covering
2:12 pm
the stuff that hillary clinton has but this is not an equal amount of fact checking or equal amount of criticism that is being apply today donald trump and hillary clinton. >> but you should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time. >> but a midyear roundup of all of the statements of the candidates and 70% of the statements were falsed compared to 20% by hillary clinton so --. >> we short on time and we will get to hillary clinton later in a segment. this "time" magazine cover, meltdown, and you can see the melting face. >> great picture. >> main stream media have concluded that trump is behind and creating problems but he will lose the campaign, and is that a trap we are falling into since it is august. >> we have accused him, of melt ing down on several occasions. those are the exact words. time has pushed the envelope and i saw a cover on hillary clinton back during the e-mail scandal
2:13 pm
that was provocative before there was an investigation. that said we have to wait for several more weeks of polling, as well as look at other factors like the fact he is still taking in a last money, before we can necessarily all jump on that melting down banding what, but, when you are struggling like you are in the poll numbers you are going to invite headlines. >> we will come back to this later, panel, and, also, continuing the conversation on twitter. when we come back are some using the polls to predict that trump is toast? trish regan is up next. is all the trump coverage overshadowing hick's latest e-mail mess? l mess? at safelite, we know how busy life can be.

>> is the poll obsessed press writing off donald trump? i put that question to trish regan on "fox business," from new york. >> trish regan, welcome. >> good to see you. >> now, the progress, they are saying hick has 87% chance of winning, and "new york times" upshot blog, more pessimist ice only 86% this election and everyone is writing off the latest polls. could the numbers and the coverage become a self-fulfilling prophecy against donald trump? >> i have been thinking about that. that is why journalists need to be extraordinarily cautious. as we are closer to november. keep in mind, anything can happen. think back to dukakis in 1998 he was ahead in the polls in august
2:18 pm
it is on us as journalists to be cautious about not effectively making this happen. >> i could not agree. what about the imbalance in the coverage? you look at any newspaper, most cable shows, trump, trump, trump, trump, and hillary clinton is fourth or fifth story. >> part of that is because donald trump is selling papers. oratings on television. the media like to cover donald trump but one thing i find frustrating in the process is that there is not enough policy coverage. it is all just, what did he say lately? there is a hesitation on part of media to dive into the notes and belts of what he is talking about versus hillary clinton and it is about the horse race and very much about what the latest faux pas. >> or the latest insult or flap. but you set me up for the next

question. this week, hillary clinton and donald trump both gave major economic speeches. if you are not working for a business network, my sense is they got half a day of coverage or maybe a bit more but is there a tendency particularly by political journalist whose shy away from the details, tax plans and estate tax and marginal rates and interest, because it is hard to explain particularly on television? >> i go a step further and say they don't understand it. they choose not to and they deliberately shy away from getting into the notes and boats of tax policy because it is frankly too complicated. that is a very, very sad thing. it is incredibly important we take on the responsibility of making sure that we understand all of the policies, especially on the economy. think about it. this is the biggest issue in this election. we need change when it comes to the economic future because our economy is in such a bad state. what are the things that hillary

2:21 pm
they are wrong. all the last question in the last half minute, what about the argument that some journalists make that donald trump would never see a candidate like and saying factually challenging thing so we need to give him more scrutiny than hillary clinton? >> they do. it is not because he is stepping in it but because they don't like him. that, in fact, is coloring some of their reporting. i recommend regardless of what you think of either candidate it is up to us to scrutinize carefully both of the folks. you cannot give anyone a pass just because you may like their policies. we see that from mainstream media quite a bit. >> or because one candidate has been around in the political scene for a lot longer. trish regan always great to see you. >> you too, howie. >> are some media athletes being
