for the daily beast and welcome to you. eli analook at the numbers in a recent numbers wall street poll, voters in colorado, hillary clinton is winning among win eight points, 42- 34. and in virginia it is closer. leading trump by one point. but how do you explain the losses in popularity that donald trump is experiencing with the white men or hillary clinton's gain? >> you know, these numbers would be be shocking except for they make a lot of sense given the previous numbers that trump isn't cementing the republican base. we saw mitt romney unify the republicans. 93 percent of the republicans voted for mitt romney and the

number of republicans voting for trump 70 and 80 percent. who is the base of the republican party? it is a lot of men. mostly men. and so, it makes perfect sense that he is lagging hillary clinton on those voters. i think it is noteworthy that mitt rom no won independent voters from the base to independents. he beat obama 50- 45. and trump is trailing hillary clinton on the independents and so when you put those two things together. it explains the numbers in virginia, colorado, pennsylvania and ohio, all of the crucial swings states to win to get to 270 electoral votes. >> the wall street journal call its a lesson in cold dangerous math. mitt romney won white men and donald trump is not doing as well, why? >> i think it is ironic that

donald trump is doing so porly with white men. the campaign is designed to offend every demographic except white men. hispanic and muslips and the list goes on. and so it is it ironic for donald trump even now among the one group that receptmentes he was trying to evoke in the campaign they are not cottoning on to it him. white male voters are looking at the campaign and seeing someone who is errat and i can doesn't have temperament to be president and following most other americans in making the decision of can't support him. >> there has to be more, eli ana. he enjoyed numbers especially with the white men earlier and

tailoring the a pole of his campaign to disaffected blue collar workers. >> the numberical answer blue collar white working class voters don't make up a huge number of men in the country and they are a declining share of the electorate at large. both the male electorate and the whole electorate. and so trump would have had to increase their turn out and participation in voting. he needs to expand his base and he's not doing either one of those thing. >> james what about the new toned down trump that we seem to hear in the speeches like the one in north carolina, where he

apologized for perhaps offending people in the past. will that boost his appeal? >> i would give it 12 hours and see if he can maintain it. we have seen so many people come out and say here's the new trump and he's going to act responsible and start acting rational like an adult. i don't see why there is an indication over the past year or more than a year that he is capable of doing that. i think the voters have a full impression of who donald trump is. and when you read the teleprompter it doesn't sound sincere. it is late for him to try to convince people he is a new man. 70 year olds don't change at that point in life had. >> we'll see, i am not there yet. but we'll see. james kirchick and eli ana.

clinton is taking money from saudi arabia and promoting women's rights. that is not promoting it what so ever. >> there were 26 million to the clinton foundation from 60 companies that lobbied the state department while she was secretary of state. the obama administration warned the foundation that it had to be hands off, karen. and it seems like they didn't necessarily get the message. >> i think what they are doing moving forward is the right thing. to make sure we stop perceived conflict of interest or actual conflict of interest before they happen. it is unprecedented territory and we need to move forward in the right way. that is the plan and what you are hearing from them today and they are trying to do the right thing and make sure we are forward.

syria. they are going after al-qaeda linked fighters. they are on the side of president assad. and civilians are caught in the middle of this. and assad forces going after the kurds. so what is happening in syria as it seems that there is an escalating tension from all of the major players. >> when the russians got into this they propped up the regime and saved it. it was what happened to them, they have not taken back p the territory because of the opposition posed by the al-qaeda and moderates. this is it a tough struggle for the russians. they are getting push back at home particularly with the elections coming up. they are going all in with an
