person is dead following a militant attack on an american university in kabul. hello, even. right now teachers and students are held in place. the school is on lockdown. a student was killed at least 14 others were wounded. k conor powell joins us live. >> the gunfighting has stopped but we understand the entire university is still under lockdown. the students and teachers include lots of americans and foreign staff. they're in lockdown and hiding in place as they go through the entire facility trying to figure out if all of the attackers have been killed. about 7:00 or so local time in kabul, there was an attack at

the american university of afghanistan and then attackers began to pull into the facility. one photographer, a surprise winning photographer said he saw one of the attackers with a gun who began to shoot at him. he and a hundred others were able to escape. as we understand, students were able to get out of the facility, but this is a very busy time at the university of afghanistan. it's the end of the day. students are taking classes at night. men and women can socialize in a relatively safe environment, however, the taliban has tried to attack this facility in the past. because its symbolism is a spot of education and men and women interact has always been a target, it generally has very good security. the word we're getting is while most of the students are hiding in place and the afghan security

one person is dead after an attack on the american university in kabul. right now authorities are sweeping the complex. what is unclear right now is how many attackers there may be, is it one, is it more, how many may be on the campus. conor powell joins us with more. >> we know there were multiple atta attacks. we don't know if there was a suicide bomber, but we have heard eyewitness accounts of people getting inside the american university of afghanistan with people shootable with rifles and suicide vests. there are members of the nato alliance on the ground there acting as advisers to the afghan security force.

they're not taking part in what's a combat role but this is a high-profile facility. there are a lot of americans working there, a lot of european and westerners teaching there. it's a place where there are several hund on the ground. many of them are connected to middle class and upper class afghan families across the country, so this is a spot that if there were attacks like this in the past have always been high profile and this has been a concern for a lot of afghanistans that at some point they would have launched a successful attack, shannon. >> conor powell, thank you. we'll check back. a french man shouting established a british women to death and two men. it happened at a hostel.

progressive justices? strict and balanced? how much of that remains an issue? >> that's a good government. the president nominates, congress gives advice and consent. qualified nominees usually get picked but a conservative period will pick a conservative judge. all i can say is wayne garland, if she nominated him, hillary clinton nominated mr. garland, that's probably about the best we would guess from her. i would be included to support him. >> okay. so with that in mind, is there any chance -- there's been a lot of chatter that you guys may -- the senate may move forward after there's been no way pledge from the gop you would move forward on confirming him, is it possible, knowing -- >> no. >> -- that you would probably get someone from hillary clinton? >> i'm going to stick what i said. the next president should make

its pick. hitteri historicall historically, when a vacancy comes late in the process -- if she does win and she nominated a person like judge garland, i think chances are, he would get through. that's probably about the best you could expect. mr. trump has given us a list of names like bill prior, i would love to see him on the supreme court. the court matters, probably more on the political basis. the independent voter who is going to decide the election will look at the person as a whole, not just who you pick for the court. your judgment, your temperament, if you're up to the job. it's not going to be about who you pick for the court. >> and of course getting to the court -- getting nominate side one thing. getting to the court means going through the senate. with the makeup that you have now, you have several key gop senators who are in really tough battles.

what is your thought -- i know you've been out campaigning for some of your gop colleagues. >> sure. >> what happens with the senate could impact all kinds of things regardless of who is at the top of the ticket and who is the president. >> amen. here's what i would suggest. we have really qualified, incredibly talented incumbent senators all over the country. keep them to check and balance to trump or clinton, having a republica republican-controlled senate would mean a lot when it comes to court confirmations. donald trump has a great list, but he suggested nominating his own sister who i owe ppose with the every bit of my being. the truth of the matter is, hillary clinton's nominees will

be different than a conservative would make and that's important for people to consider, but it's not the only reason you vote for president. it's going to be the overall package and if mr. trump can up his game, and he is, he's doing much better. if he can control the gap, i think the chance of keeping the senate goes up. if he can stay on message, this -- this clinton global fund thing is a gift from the political gods. it just reeks of wrong. it reeks of insider benefits. it's the inside versus the outside, and trump represents the outside and he's in a pretty good spot if he can up his game to show he's got the judgment, temperament and experience to be president of the united states. >> we said there was nothing quid pro quo, and they said there's nothing illegal in the mix here and that foundation has done good for a lot of people on things like health issues, hiv,

helping out in haiti. what's the argument for closing it down? >> you don't have to pick between helping poor people and having a system you can be proud of. the reason they're promising to shut it down in the future, if she wins, is because the average american doesn't seem to believe this is the way the system should work. at the end of the day, this is not the way to help the poor. at the end of the day, this is insetuous president of the secretary of state, that looks bad at a very minimum, and why would the clintons do it and they have dodged a thousand bullets in their political career. she had a fresh start as secretary of state. she sets up a private server, trying to head the way she does her job not to be transparent, which comes with the job, and bill clinton is raising money for good causes but he is also living pretty darn well off the global fund, traveling around first class everywhere. i don't want to be little what the clinton initiative has done,
