we'll lean heavily on your journalism and expertise. >> lean on me. harris: the gloves are really off. the donald trump and hillary clinton escalated attacks on each other invoking race with some of the harshest language yet. clinton is accusing her gop rival turning his party over to a fringe movement marked by hate groups. trump is accusing clinton much smearing his supporters as racist, that she is trying to deflect attention from her own scandals. >> donald trump has built his campaign on prejudice and pair know -- paranoia. he is taking hate groups mainstream. he is helping a red call fringe take over the republican party radical fringe. >> what does she do when she can't defend her record? that's right. she lies. he said it. she lies. and smears and she paints decent americans, you, as racists.

>> trump is reinforcing harmful stereotypes, and offering a dog whistle to hose most hateful supporters. >> your racist, you're racist, you're racist. they keep saying i. you're racist. it's a tired, disgusting, argument. harris: all right. so we had a week of this type of thing back and forth. define your opponent, is the game they seem to be playing. however, the issues are what counts. who gets credit for talking about issues this week? >> probably neither one. in this case we have two candidates who have been each of them, famous on the national stage for 30 years or so. so there are already pretty well-defined and probably not by their attitudes towards race. so i happen to think in this case neither candidate is building a terribly convincing case about the other. donald trump has been married to immigrants. he is employed blacks and hispanics. i don't think anyone looks at donald trump is racist himself unless you're already

predisposed to believe that about the guy. in terms of hillary clinton, i don't think anyone looks at her see as bigot per se. donald trump when he was questioned why calling her a bigot, anderson cooper, kept saying do you think she hates black people and hates minorities, that is what a bigot is? her policies are not good for the groups, she sells them even knowing that. that is case hillary clinton is cynical, not racist. i don't think this gains much traction for either candidate. harris: meghan. meghan: when i watch hillary clinton speech obvious she is trying to move headlines from clinton foundation scandals. both candidates are in need of white college educated suburbanites. that is who they are going after. both are making play, calling each other racist. i'm with you, i don't think either candidates are racist. what is effective the new ad where images of kkk associated with donald trump. david duke saying this is my kind of candidate. where she loses me when she gets with the read alex jones

conspiracy theories, mainstream america is not aware who these people are. a little too wonky inside baseball. i think they both lose this week. harris: julie, is it dicey game saying on their own behalf you are not courting these people and can't legislate who they are voting for. >> you can't blame and hold people accountable for those who vote for them. hillary clinton made a misstep this week when she sort of insulted the american voters who are going to vote for donald trump. i mean it is one thing to insult the candidate. another thing to insult the folks who vote for them. those are americans. and i will say on the comments this week, it is just race to the bottom. this kind of grade school game of copycat. i'm not a racist, you're a racist. i'm not a bigot. you're a bigot. harris: something, julie you said all along, can we get to the point talking about what is important to the people voting in november. we're both mothers.

we're people paying taxes. we have some things we would like to see worked out before november 8th, just us on the couch. now extrapolate that out. 300 million. >> what is she is doing strategically, she is not speaking to donald trump. harris: who is she talking to? >> she is talking to republicans who she wants them to distance themselves from donald trump. talking to john mccains of the world, paul ryan, mitch mcconnells, i just laid out a case why your standard-bearer, the head of the republican party today, is a bigot and associates with a lot of racists and has engaged in some behavior people may consider to be racist too, going back when he was developer in new york 40 years ago. so, laid that case out very persuasively. she is saying to them, do you stand with him or do you not stand with him. what is interesting to me, not one of those people in the last 24 hours, that i have seen, has come out and repudiated point by point anything she said about donald trump. that is exactly the point she was trying to make. harris: julie, along those

lines, if you're looking to stack things up against somebody see who stands with them and who doesn't, what about all the problems that she had with the email scandals? what about the 15,000 more come out and pay for play allegations look like -- she says there is smoke but no fire. i don't know anything causes smoke besides something burning. >> that may be. nothing in the world worst than being called a racist. that is horrible to be called, i don't care who you are. >> one thing worse? >> a liar? >> a child molester. going into issues of associations and so forth, that is one particular area i think clintons wish to stay away from. >> i don't even know what that is about. >> i would say being called a racist is horrible thing to do. being associated with somebody who is racist is not something any of us want to be associated with. what she is trying to do make it virtually impossible for republicans on fence for donald trump, college educated white voters. harris: called them white educated suburbanites. >> right for those --

meghan: she is over reaching. there are parts of this would be effective but she goes way too far, reading some of the breitbart headlines, i'm telling you average americans in my home state of arizona they don't care who runs breitbart, who is running donald trump's campaign. harris: that is very true. >> they want to hear someone speak for them. i agree with you, white college educated voters, traditionally republicans won for decades and decades, where donald trump and quite frankly hillary clinton are most vulnerable. harris: james you spoke up and gillian, had, oh, my goodness. what were you talking about? i think you might want to respond. i want to give you guys a chance. >> well, i am always eager to respond but look there is fellow named jeffrey epstein who faced these kinds of charges and for whom there is long documented trail of relationship with the clintons, and, so i agreed essentially with your point when you want to talk about associations, both of these figures with so many, such a long history on national stage

will face that. would i say, just one last thing, if i could. hillary clinton will get some of her base mobilized by painting donald trump in these terms. donald trump will not really mobilize his base by painting hillary clinton as a bigot. harris: that is interesting. >> he would do better to mobilize his base talking what the supreme court would look like in clinton presidency. >> would-be hoof himself all year long lay out actual policy goals. we're still waiting on a plan to defeat isis. we're still waiting on comprehensive economic strategy. these are kinds of things his campaign should really be focused on right now. as you said, he will not get any new voters trying to paint hillary clinton as racist or bigot. >> i will say jeffrey epstein who is reprehensible person i think there is connection with trump and him as well, jeffrey epstein is not running donald trump's campaign. difference, steve bannon is of breitbart is running trump's campaign.

"judicial watch" says among nearly 15,000 pages of clinton's records recovered by the fbi, some included those, that quote, satisfied benghazi related search terms n a court ruling the state department must begin

releasing them by september 30th but the state department is pushing back, saying in a statement, using broad search terms we identified a number of documents potentially responsive to a benghazi-related request. at this time we have not confirmed that the documents are in fact responsive. we have not determined if they involve secretary clinton. end quote. what does that say to you. >> it tells me there is some information that was previously there she has gone and wiped off. not to be a nag, goes back to the original sin i keep saying over and over again, the decision in the first place not to use the official state department email account because she didn't have access to that, as well as the classified or the high side, as people in government call it. that is where you set yourself up for really endless errors. in my opinion everything that came after that initial decision is part of domino effect. it was always going to be there. a matter of people going in to recover it and it will be a

>> it may be peanuts compared to what julian assange is sitting on and promising to release some point before election day. i don't think we've seen a candidate in modern presidential history whose electoral fortunes are so dependent on other people, whether james couple my or julian assange. say what you will about donald trump there, is no other third person whose words or documents we're waiting to make-or-break his candidacy. >> what about the tax return for mr. trump? i would like to see that much more than any hillary clinton emails between her and her staff. >> those are his own tax returns. not the fbi -- >> they may be important. >> sure. i don't know, i'm not certain that the tax returns of donald trump are going to materially change our view of the man. >> are you happy to trust that? harris: irs is investigating him. meghan: no american soldiers were killed in his tax returns that we'll find out more information about the cause of their death. i too would like to see his tax returns. if we going down the road i would like to see hillary clinton's health records, at same time. same things every other

candidate up until this election has been forced to do. now there is double-standard for both. harris: why won't she release that. i heard your point on audits with the irs, so on, so forth. he will look at that he says he will release them as soon as process is done. which is a lot different than fbi looking at hillary clinton. her saying you know what? i do have 15,000 more, that -- >> that is nonsense excuse. he could release them tomorrow. virtually ever who has done tax policy agrees with that. harris: they're completely different case. >> they're not. julian is right. gillian is 100% right. original sin was to have private home brewed server i never defended. that, everything else emanates from the stupid decision to have done that. i would say you're also right. i would love to see his tax returns, their medical records, both of them. not just one he had gastroenterologist. harris: why won't she release her medical records? >> i think she said. why won't he release his?

all over the world do. in this incident and the incident of the nitze, in view of the crew that did not happen. meghan: confrontations between u.s. and iranian warships increased 50% this year. julie, i thought the iranian deal would solve everything, we're great with iran now. why are they harassing us? >> certainly not the first iranian provocation in the persian gulf. there are multiple. should anybody be surprised because one of the fundamental premises here was with the iran deal, sitting down with them at the table from the get-go was that there were no preconditions. i don't think there was ever expectation they were going to modify some of their more egregious behavior. that is what we're seeing now. they have not stopped being a state sponsor of terrorism. they have not stopped committing egregious human rights violations against their own people, other people in the middle east. this is just another example of

their kind of proclivity to front whatever power they think they have. they're doing it on our watch. it is not surprising to me. >> the question is not whether the iranian nuclear deal has failed to modify the iranian behavior or scale it back in some respects. the question is whether iran is worse now than before nuclear deal. our pentagon producer reports that he has defense department officials telling him iranian provocations in the persian gulf and in the strait of hormuz are right now on pace for the year 2016 to exceed that which we saw in 2015 by 50%. so the question is, whether or not they are emboldened following the nuclear deal, following all the money provided to them. this is also seen in their ballistic missile tests and other way. >> can i ask a question about that, and i legitimately don't know the answer to this? as we have people in our government, not our government or political life opposed to iran can deal so did they.

first six months of 2016, 26 dangerous confrontations with us at sea, military officials calling it unsafe and professional. they were the provocateur into each situation. will that bait us into a mistake? if you have more frequently, you have more frequency for a mistake to be made. that is what i worry about. it isn't that they will fire a shot across our bow, but we i will react in a way because we're taunted so much. i worry about that. i know our military is is the best in the world but they're human. these guys would want that. the revolutionary guard would want to bait us into that. >> but i commend, give a shoutout to the navy for handling so far. harris: absolutely. >> it doesn't necessarily escalate. i don't think that is a real risk to be honest. as julie kind of alluded to with her question is, is it a pr operation and that's the premise they're operating on? they have free rein to behave as they like. the premise of the nuclear deal

was to take the nuclear issue out of the larger framework with u.s., iranian relationship. there are no bad repercussions here. no one will renege on the nuclear deal. it is too difficult to do. harris: as my dad the connell says, if they make a mistake it will be only once. they expect to close gitmo detention center before they leave office in january. there are 61 detains east in gitmo after the defense department announced earlier this month it was transferring 15 detainees to united arab emirates. here is the vice president in sweden today. >> you have a few months left before you and president leave office. do you think that you will succeed in getting guantanamo bay closed? >> that is my hope and expectation. harris: the chairman of the house homeland security committee says the president would be defying congress and putting americans at risk.

watch. >> we passed the national defense authorization bill last congress that prohibits him from closing guantanamo bay. that bill is up for reauthorization as i speak. i'm a conferee to the report and we are going to hold firm on this. i think it would be highly reckless and irresponsible to close down guantanamo bay. harris: through the state department you would know this through ever coulding them. do we have, james, the kinds of relationships around the world to really count on our partners to watch these guys once they're in country? >> in a word, no. and really the most irresponsible aspect of this is not closing down the facility, although frankly it costs $17 million to build. no one ever said what else they plight do wit. i would like to hear that. it is not bringing these people to the united states. these guys, hardcore ones who are left are not exactly jean-claude van damme and takes out six guards and go wild of public. look at most dangerous, khalid sheikh mohammed, in the famous
