relatively calm here because we're on the west side of the storm. it is a lopsided storm, and so most of the damage, most of the heavy rains and pounding wind you're going to see on the east side. take a look at the video from tallahassee, the storm pounding the state cam capital overnight. it is first to make landfall in the state in over a decade. in tallahassee the city government reports 70,000 customers are without electricity. take a look at this photo of the florida state university campus, fsu is among those customers without power. now we want to take you to cedar key where fox news producer heather lacy shot this video from overnight showing heavy rains and winds, that barrier eye ra island community located in the northern gulf coast of florida experienced some record storm surge causing damage there in that barrier island community. then i want to show you the scene in tampa bay, and, again,
1:02 am
this is a community that is far east of the eye of the storm and yet over the past couple of days the tampa bay area has been experiencing torrential rain. the video that you see here should be showing an entire neighborhood, but instead you can barely see across the street because of the strong rains. now take a look at this. >> what happened there? >> reporter: this was the scene in brandon, another city in the tampa bay area where the storm caused a transformer to explode. you're going to see power outages in spotty communities throughout the sunshine state, but utility crews in between feeder bands have begun repairing the damage. florida power & light which serves some of the communities tweeted it expects to restore power to most of its customers within 24 hours after the storm

tallahassee. wind gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour. it is still a hurricane, 75 miles per hour sustained winds. we get a brand-new advisory at 5:00, and sometimes it comes out latest. we will bring you the latest. for now it is still a hurricane and as you mentioned it is the first hurricane to make landfall in florida since wilma in 2005. pretty impressive here. still seeing the cloudest cloud tops, so the strongest part of the storm hitting the tallahassee area right now, the panhandle of florida. we are going to continue to see the wind gusts in excess of tropical storm force up to hurricane force as well as storm surge up to 5 feet. the biggest threat from hurricanes is the storm surge and the fresh water flooding, so this will be an issue ongoing throughout the day today and then into the overnight, and as jonathan siery mentioned we will not be done with the storm because it will last several days as it mates its way up the east coast. there's the last, three hours

winds through florida, georgia, south carolina over the next 24 to 48 hours. we have a tornado watch in effect because a lot of times with these land-falling tropical systems, we have the friction at the surface and then the twisting with height with those winds in the upper levels give us potential for tornado-born storms. we don't have any warnings just yet which is good news but we've seen a few warnings ongoing throughout the morning and certainly into the the afternoon hours. future radar, okay. so we're going to watch this storm creep up the coast, hug the coastline. if the center stays off-shore the waters are very warm here, so it could maintain it's strength for the next 48 hours, and then we're going to see it move off the coast and transition into what we call an extra tropical system, almost like a nor' easter. then it is going to continue to sort of sit and spin off the coast for days to come. so here is the track. again, dealing with the hurricane, probably within the
